What is your favorite genre of music anyway?

I don't have a favorite genre of music. I can like any kind of genre as long as it has some substance to it. I don't like songs that only have two parts in the whole song. I like songs that have a little more complexity to them.

Although if I had to choose, my favorite genres would be Pop, R&B, and Rock.

I'm all over the spectrum. The only type of music I honestly will not listen to is Heavy Metal.

It's weird. I haven't (so far) seen anyone say a thing about Classical music. C'mon people! Where's your sense of... uh... classicalism? :confused:

If I had to pick one favorite, I'd have to say Jazz - more specifically Swing.

But my musical tastes are very eclectic: also Rock & Roll, Rock, Punk, New Wave, 'Classical' (actually Early Music, Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, & Modern, but not Classical), Folk, Rockabilly, Bluegrass, some Country, Reggae, Calypso, alternative and experimental music (like Laurie Anderson, the Residents, Tomita, Varese).

I don't particularly like Techno and Trance music nor most Rap.

Well, I usually prefer Baroque or romantic music to classical, so...
Baroque send chills up my spine, and romantic lets be be so expressive. Classical just isn't as good to me most of the time. But Mozart's symphonies... Holy crap those are good! I'm working on a Mozart piano sonata now (In between my big Grieg concerto. I'm still liking the Grieg piece more, but the Mozart is fun :p )

Which New Age artists are you interested in? My main love is electronic music, which had been filed under the New Age moniker for a long time. My favorite electronic artists are Klaus Schulze, Steve Roach, Tangerine Dream, Robert Scott Thompson, and many others. I used to be very active in the old rec.music.newage newsgroup, and even submitted reviews for the short-lived Wind and Wire magazine.

I also like some techno, though I've had a hit-and-miss affair with it. Some albums I enjoy and others I don't care for.

I have a really weird relationship with classical. I fell in love with it first through John Williams' score to Star Wars, then bought a 10 LP (giving away my age here... before CDs) collection of Beethoven published by Readers Digest. I'll listen to classical, then stop and not listen for several years. Then I will pick it up for a while, then drop it. Early this year, I had a HUGE craving for it, so I checked into the Nashville Symphony. I have not attended many live concerts in any genre, so this was a treat. I was blown away (it was a performance of Mahler's 5th), attended their summer concerts, and have season's tickets for 2010-2011.

I enjoy the various periods of classical, and even enjoy the more experimental composers such as Penderecki, Glass (most, not all), Steve Reich, etc. So I don't mind the weird sounding plucking of violins or banging of pots and pans. :lol:

I bought and watched a great lecture series published by The Teaching Company called "How to Listen to and Understand Great Music" by Robert Greenberg, along with Greenberg's other lectures. He's a very entertaining and informative lecturer, and it was interesting to learn the history surrounding the composers and their works. However, I consider myself to have a beginner's level background, as I don't always identify various themes or have a critical listening skills that musicians have.

I also enjoy 70s and 80s pop/rock.

This is considered "shredding," though I haven't listened to metal in a while. Unless Metallica or Iron Maiden is considered metal (which I don't think they are), then the last metal song I listened to was 10,000 by Disturbed.

If you're interested, some of my favorite albums are Dancing with the Lion, On the Wings of the Butterfly, and White Winds. When I mentuined wierd string plucking, I was referring to some music I heard somewhere which was categorized as 'New Age'.

Raphael: Music to Disappear in I & II (might be on Amazon), Angels of the Deep (this is wonderful and includes the sounds of whale song in it). Not the classical composer.

Yes, I have Dancing With the Lion. I'll have to listen to that again soon, as it has been a long time since I've listened to his music. His music has a wonderful bounce that always cheers me up.

Kitaro is a Japanese musician. Favorites include Oasis, Ki, and Silver Cloud. I'm mostly fond of these earlier works.

If you check out Constance Demby, try "Novus Magnifiicat" first. I think it's her masterpiece. She's sometimes referred to as the Queen of New Age. :)

You should be able to find all the artists mentioned on YouTube. Since New Age is such a diverse genre, YouTube is a great way to try before you buy.

Another group popped into my head last night... Mythos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmlpOOtbAWU). I'm listening to one of their tracks on YouTube as I'm typing.

I'm also very fond of the Windham Hill label as well.

If you're interested in branching out to the Space Music subgenre, I could make a ton of recommendations. :) I'll lead off with Jonn Serrie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nwudva0_ULo) and Patrick O'Hearn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZjAqDlEQ4c).

If you're interested in branching out to the Ambient subgenre (not the Techno Ambient, which I consider Trance), I could post about a gazillion recommendations. :)

I reiterate:

I would describe elements of the rhythm as changing time signatures, 16th notes, overdriven, palm muting, power chords, and odd beat count.

Palm muting is achieved when one places the hand on the strings just at the bridge to achieve a more percussive sound. Power chords are perfect fifths in two or 3 notes. Overdrive is achieved when the gain of an amplifier and guitar is high enough to clip the signal's resonance peak.

It depends on the genre of metal but most features a few beats of palm muted low notes followed by a short ascending or descending power chord riff or a dissonant possibly non chromatic scale pattern in a measure. These measure usually repeat several times while the singer screams an accompaniment and the drummer usually applies fast drumming, such as the double kick, which is 16th note bass drum strikes.
This formula can be applied to the verse, chorus, and bridge, intro, and outro.

Another element of metal comes from hardcore punk. The breakdown. Slow, palm muted, 4/4 half notes with syncopated 8th notes. In other words "1-2-3-4&1-2-3-4&1-2-3-4. It creates a buildup at 4th notes and release at the 8th notes.

I listen to everything with a few exceptions. Absolutely no country music and no Christian rock/pop/whatever. It's just so bad. Also not a fan of metal for the most part except for old school Sabbath (early 70s) and Metallica's early stuff.

Been on a big 80s kick for the past couple of years. Some good stuff.

Talk about polar opposites. I just got into country, and so far I'm listening to Josh Turner, Rodney Atkins, and Zac Brown Band. Also, Skillet and Pillar (Christian rock) are some of my favorite bands. Other than that, I really like 3 Days Grace and a few songs by Rise Against, with a dash of Nickelback thrown in.

Contemporary Christian and Christian Rock are what I listen to most. I still have some of my old Styx, Rush, Triumph, and Kansas that I'll listen to on occasion. I will listen to just about anything except Opera. Powerful orchestra music - like John Williams created for Star Wars - will always get my attention, too.

I'm not a big fan of contemporary country music, but there are related genres I like very much. And by "related genres" I mean bluegrass.

For me, it's classical all the way, but I like jazz a lot, too.

Classical music is for those who have patience (i.e. to sit through a 20 min concerto). In the end, it's all worth it. All music (and I mean all) is based off of classical components. Without classical, there would be no no modern music...

Well, I listen to a lot of metal, but there are a lot of different opinions on what is considered to be metal.

You have the Iron Maiden and Metallica metal, the stuff that started it all out. I love this stuff, but it is no longer what most people consider metal, it's more like hard rock.

Then you have your Five Finger Death Punch, RED, and Avenged Sevenfold type of metal. This is probably my favorite type of metal. Less screaming, more catchy guitar riffs.

And of course, there's the incredibly hardcore, screaming...well, metal metal! I generally do not like this kind of music, with two exceptions. I love Slipknot. A lot. James Root is one of my favorite guitarists ever, and his playing style sounds amazing when matched up with the sheer vocal powers of Corey Taylor. The second exception is with Children of Bodom. You can hardly understand a word between the Finnish accent and brutal screaming, but when you take into effect that Alexi Laiho sings that type of thing as he plays the amazing guitar the band is famous for, you realize how much talent metal actually takes to play.

Besides metal, I listen to a lot of alternative music and classic rock, along with some progressive rock. The Myriad is probably my favorite band overall, they just sound so eerie and strange and beautiful, and Avenged Sevenfold is a close second. Rush is another favorite, and you can't go wrong with Muse.

Personally I love Rock music and I use listening to soft rock songs on my iPod daily while I’m travelling to office.

Anyway, I forget whether or not I replied here already, but I go for artists like: Nirvana, Simon & Garfunkel (the former independently also), White Stripes, some Radiohead, AC/DC, Three Days Grace on and off, the occasional bout of psychedelic rock, Wilco, Beethoven, Mozart, Howard Shore, etc., etc.

Varied, to say the least. :p

I dislike all of them, the only rappers I like/tolerate are Eminem and Snoop Dogg.

I really like Radiohead, Queen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Modest Mouse, Muse, The Gorillaz, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foster The People, Smash Mouth, The Police, The Who, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, FM Static and Charles Mingus. (Wow, that was more than I originally intended to put. :lol:)

To each his own. Anybody have a personal favorite album? Or even a top 3? Might as well list mine-
1) Graceland, Paul Simon and other artists
2) The White Album, The Beatles
3) Nevermind, Nirvana

Odessey and Oracle by The Zombies is my favorite album. The artist that did the album cover misspelled, "Odyssey" so they just went with it, lol.

Abbey Road by The Beatles. Very clearly the best Beatles album. My father has their entire discography on vinyl, yet all he plays is their annoying early stuff. >_>

Hmmmmmmm, what could be my third. A Day At The Races, or A Night At The Opera? So hard to choose for a Queen fan. Races. But the song 39 is the breasts. Queen II is so great too! :frustrated:

Wow, ParaGoomba! Odessey and Oracle! Perhaps the greatest unknown classic there is. I could listen to "This Will Be Our Year" on repeat for a week and never tire of it. You have inspired me to play it now.
