Couple of (newbie) questions:
First, regarding the entrance fee. I presume that a Heroscape-related table prize would be an expansion pack or something? Maybe an Ebay find?
Second, would this event be something that my 7.5 yr-old son could attend? He attended the "casual" game day and seemed to do okay. (We played four games each in about 4 hrs.)
Thanks for any guidance! :)

First, yes - any expansion pack or heroscape item you wish to put on the table. By having everyone bring a prize...everyone takes one home. With additional support from select vendors there will be more on the table than we have contestants.
Second, yes - our youth bracket is designed for our younger and less experienced players. Typically the youth bracket will be players from about eight to twelve. Your son will be fine in that group. :)

Thoughts and input please....
With doing 600 points, is anyone of a mind that we should expand the starting zone count to 27 or 30? I have no preference either way at this moment but really didn't think about the difference until just now.

Hi everyone,
may be a silly question or I did not read the info right, but when exactly is the event, what date?
We will be there again also, either only my son Ethan who is now 12 and me, mom (not participating) or dad Joseph who also wants to participate. Ever since the casual event they have been playing a lot on the master rules and have gotten pretty familiar with all the rules, glyphs aso. They have practiced on various maps and put together various armies to see which one's are good. They have tried different 500 point armies but now I see it will be 600 point armies.
Well, looking forward to seeing you there!
Thanks,
Daniela, mom of warrior E aka Ethan

I'm fine with whatever man I've already got my army figured out and its only 14 hexes but I'm sure people who like fielding a ton of cheap figures would really appreciate this.

I changed my mind, were going with 13 hexes!
Just kidding. :) I think we can stick with 24 as I think about it more and more...the more figures would just make the games longer for some maps/matchups.

24 hexes sounds good to me as well, it'll keep some of those games from going to time which is never a good thing anyways.

Common Attack, Unique Attack, Attack, Defense +1, Defense +2, Move, Initiative, Lodin, Pit Trap and Wind....unless we need for more - that is the plan so far. Maybe we will hold off on the treasure glyphs until the January event....and I have a twist in mind for that we can discuss on the 16th.

A pool draft by necessity. Bringing your entire collection would be crazy and drafting would take too long.

Common Attack, Unique Attack, Attack, Defense +1, Defense +2, Move, Initiative, Lodin, Pit Trap and Wind
Defense +2? Do you guys use that regularly in your tourneys? It seems like that'll drag things out or grossly turn the tide of the battle. I don't care if it's included, but I've always just avoided using it.

Been workin on some with bro as well we had captain/5-4th mass/eldgrim for 600/22 its a tough puppy to wear down. I would guess you had something like that the last time. It also seems like the sweet the spot for the 4th mass is 4 squads leaving you with 320 points and 8 starting zones  wonder what ya could do with that.
Those defense+2 glyphs are pretty brutal, one of my friends that came last time was playing a guy that got on two of them on the same map with krav. 7 defense stealth dodge was the end of him by itself.

October 7th, 2010, 02:42 AM
I have when needed for covering all the maps with adequate glyphs, if we don't need it - it will be the first pulled but I have so few of them it doesn't often make it on a board. Would be no problem to pull it if folks don't want to see it.

Unfortunately my daughter's book club has been rescheduled for the 16th so she will more than likely not make it to the youth division. She is sad. I am still trying to get mom to pick her up early, but don't count on her being there.
Another interested idea I heard the boys up north are doing is allowing any c rated or below hero to draw from a random treasure glyph pool prior to the game (good way to get treasure glyphs and lesser used heros involved). This might help prevent 4 cap. & 4th teams from showing, but anyways could be good food for thought for the future.
If you need more glyphs that don't involve +2 defense I would be happy to provide.
Looking forward to next weekend.

In the past we have stuck with "only Hasbro/WotC" originals policy to avoid problems. *IF* it is the same figure -- size and shape and color -- on the same base...I would have no problem with it but for targeting and LOS we need to be sure it is the same as the real deal.
Longy, I will take her off the list for now but would need to know if she is coming by Thursday at the latest. AND, if that inclusion puts us over the 36 player mark -- it volunteers you to bring the extra map. :D lol

Longy, I don't think so at this point - we just lost two contestants to an unforeseen medical emergency and that gives us breathing room on the number of maps. And we will have it all set up Friday night, it works sooo much easier. :) I appreciate the offer though.

I was wondering if someone attending the tournament would do me a huge favor, all of my local FLGS are out of the Ghost light fen D1 booster and I need 1 by the 16th.If its not to much trouble would it be possible for anyone to pick one up to sell to me at the event. I am willing to pitch in a few extra bucks for your trouble and am 100% sure I am going to be there.
Thanks, send me a pm...

Regrettably my son and I won't be able to attend.
I've got several out-of-town (and out-of-state) family members converging on my house for the weekend. As much as I might want to "escape" I just couldn't do it and keep a clear conscience. :(
And unfortunately none of them are gamers or even remotely interested in that sort of thing.
Anyway, we are both disappointed that we won't be able to make it. My son was quite excited to go and play for prizes! :)
So next time. Have fun guys!

P.S. Congratulations on the adoption Bahde! Enjoy the journey.

Hi everyone - I'm a new Heroscape player in Portland and I will be attending at least a portion of the event this weekend with my sons, who are also players. As we've been focused on the Basic rules (we're working up to the Master rules), we probably won't be joining in the tournament, but will be very interested in watching. We will probably bring along our sets, too, to play a few casual games (assuming there are free tables).

Its a good place to come and watch and learn how to make your game a little better and meet other people that like to play/know the game in your'e area, sometimes play a little to much .
Anyhow always good to have new players coming into the game.

I am unsure if we will have any extra maps set up during the event, I am right at the limit for the terrain available in my collection -- but you are more than welcome to come and check things out. If we don't exceed 36 people...I can put a little map on the side for you to play on but there will be plenty of action to watch as things progress.
We look forward to seeing you there and hopefully next time around...you will be playing too.

I am getting excited about this, it will be a real good turn out and one of our largest events.
RZ, I understand watching the games and playing sideboards--but also, don't worry about the game environment because we have always kept it low key and fun.
Karat, Hidicul had a rough go of it with some dice rolls last time...but his tactics were good--if you fare well against him normally...you should do just fine. :)
RR, I will make the update. If you bring anymore folks...we will have to name you as a sponsor or something too. lol (Keep em coming!)

Venoc Warlord 120
Mohicans x3 330
EOV 430
Venoc Vipers x3 550

Goblin Cutters x5
Braxas
Krug
Marcu (sit a goblin, unless on a lava map)
First game vs Brandon (Hive, Stingers x5, Grimnak, Marcu) on Ambush Alley
Marcu beat up the hive first round, Goblin killed hive, Krug killed Grimnak, Goblins killed stingers. Braxas used once to melt stingers near start zone.
Win
Second game vs Allen (Silver Surfer, Microcorp x2, PKs x1, Isamu) on Fire Isles
Braxas melted SS on third try (16, 16, 20) after SS landed a cosmic force blast that knocked off a marker. Then braxas melted everyone else. Over very quickly. Sorry Allen, but Silver Surfer got his revenge next game.
Win
Third game vs ROADRAGE (Silver Surfer, 4th x4) on Spring Thaw
I screwed up big time. For whatever reason, I led with my heavy hitters (assuming he’d lead with SS, I guess) and lost them fairly quick. Braxas got 7 4th, but only one try on the surfer (16!) before she fell. The goblins took care of the 4th no problem, but couldn’t even put a single wound on the silver jerk. Man. I hate that guy. Not Josh, he’s pretty cool. Silver Surfer. Blech. Oh yeah, it didn't help that ROADRAGE didn't make any mistakes. Pssh. ;)
Anyway, I feel like if I had led with the goblins I could have cleared out the 4th first without too much trouble (other than losing most of my goblins...but that's what they're for!) and then I would have hopefully had a couple more chances at acid breath with Braxas. But I did not do that. :(
Loss
Fourth game vs MegadeV (Braxas, Heirloom, Ana Karithon, Raelin, Rhogar Dragonspine, Isamu) on Just Passing Through
His Braxas jumped right in and started melting Goblins, but they mobbed her and took care of her pretty quickly. 1 Defense doesn’t hold up too well. Then I brought in my Braxas to get rid of Heirloom and his explosion attack. Braxas melted Ana, but was hacked up by Rhogar pretty quickly. Then Krug took the stage, and chopped everyone else down, one by one.
Win
Fifth game vs Greg Jr. (Raelin, Warforged Soldiers x2, Iron Golem, Zetacron) on Invasion
Greg rushed out Zetacron to try to take out Braxas early, but the goblins got to zeta before he could get in range. Then the goblins took out the Iron Golem, and Braxas moved in to melt the squaddies. A few short turns later, Braxas was duking it out in Greg’s start zone with Raelin, who brought the dragon queen down to 1 life before getting chomped up (no poison breath for Raelin!)
Win
Total 4-1, 3rd place. My only loss was to ROADRAGE, who ended up going 5-0 and getting first. (Funny thing: Nadom told me to play that (ROADRAGE’s) army. I just couldn’t do it after playing Cap and 4th the last time I went up to Camas. I liked my goblin army though. :) )
Anyway, the goblins were absolutely brutal against squads with only three members, and very effective against even the 4th mass. I’m glad I didn’t have to face Q9, but I like to think I could have handled him with Krug and/or a couple bites from Braxas. Also, I got the attack glyph in a couple games and it makes the goblins CRAZY. 3 attack vs most units defense when you’re mobbing them is very effective.
Thanks for running the tourney, Bahde!

I decided to bring the Omnicrons because I've been fascinated with the Repulsors since they've come out. My full army:
Repulsors x4
Snipers x2
Zetacron
Raelin
Krav Maga Agents
Paul asked why I brought the Krav instead of another squad of Snipers. I didn't have a real good reason except that I love the Krav and thought I could use them to bring in people closers to my Omnicrons. I'm glad I had the Krav. Without them, I couldn't have won most of my matches.
Match 1: against my dad who had 2x10th, Raelin, Thanos, and Isamu
Map: Just Passing Through
The first half didn't look good for me as Thanos came out followed by Raelin blasting away. He also got both glyphs early which were killing me. I tried to get out of Thanos' range and concentrated on getting the other glyph as my Krav got to the top of the mountain and focused on taking out the 10th. When one side of the map was cleared, I concentrated on the other side with Thanos. I threw in some Repulsors until he decided to disengage from them and come after my Snipers. I got 2 wounds from the disengagement, but then concentrated on getting Raelin and actually finished off Thanos last after I got both the glyphs.
Match 2: against MacLeod (did I spell that right?) who had 5x4th Massachusetts, Captain America, and Eldgrim
Map: I don't remember the name but it had a tall island in the middle of the map with a glyph on it.
He rushed Eldgrim to get the glyph but I just flew Raelin to it and took out Eldgrim (who went to CapAp). Then it was all Krav as they rushed to height within Raelin's aura and took out the 4th. A few 4th made it to engagement and finally finished off the Krav but the game was mostly over by then. The Snipers came up and finished off the rest. I was scared of the 4th the most but the Krav really pulled through for me/
Match 3: against Jeremiah who had 3x Minions, Q9, and Atlaga
Map: Fire Isles
I brought out the Krav and Raelin again as I wanted to save the Repulsors for Q9. They had some good rolls and Jeremiah's Minions didn't as they took out almost all the Minions before being taken out. Then the Repulsors came out, and with a little help from Zetacron, took out Q9. Atlaga took out some but the dice decided this one.
Match 4: Madilynn who had 7x Stingers and Q9
Map: Shady Oasis (but the glyphs were forgotten this time)
I actually suggested this same army for my nephew who was playing for the first time in the youth division. Madilynn was playing for the first time in the open division and she always played stingers. I knew this would be another hard match. I brought out the Krav and Raelin again and she lost around 3 squads of stingers before she tried bringing out Q9 to deal with them. But then it was too late. The Krav had height and Raelin and Jungle so were rolling 7 defense dice. The repulsors were too far away so the Krav took out Q9 themselves. But the Stingers had gotten close enough to engage the Krav and take them out. I brought out Repulsors as quick as I could to slow down the Stingers as they rushed forward. There were only 3 squads left but they kept coming. Time was then called and I won. Watch out for Madilynn in future tournaments!
Match 5: against Josh (Roadrage) who ha 4x 4th Massachusetts, and Silver Surfer.
Map: one I had never seen before with two Marvel walls in the middle that had the breakaway sections and platforms removed.
This was the really scary army and I felt good at the beginning when my Krav came out and put a bunch of wounds on the Surfer. But then he finished off the Krav and I didn't have a good counter to all those 4th. By the end, I had finished off the Surfer and one squad of 4th as he wiped the floor with my army. Good game!
I went 4-1, got 2nd place, and this was my best tournament showing ever. Pretty good with an army I took just to see how those cute little Repulsors would do!
Thanks for patiently and awesomely running all this Bahde!

My army: Braxas, Rhogar Dragonspine, Ana Karithon, Heirloom, Raelin (RotV), Isamu (600 pts)
Round 1
vs Marcus (Iron Golem, Cyprien Esenwein, Raelin (RotV), Iskra Esenwein, Sonya Esenwein, Fire Elemental, Marcu Esenwein, Rechetes of Bogdan, and I think one squad of the Axegrinders of the Burning Forge)
on Spring Thaw (Pit Trap and Initiative glyphs)
Marcus started out advancing with Iskra and Cyprien, while I tried to find a good spot to park Raelin. I moved up Braxas, trying to melt the two vampires, but Iskra was able to move close to Raelin and got his Rechets out on the first try. They immediately dropped Ana with a triple-skull shot and put some wounds on Raelin. Cyprien also advanced and tried to take out Raelin, but Braxas caught up to him and made him pay with his un-life. Braxas and Rhogar finished off the Rechets and Iskra, but by the time they were done, Raelin dropped. Marcus' Iron Golem then strode into the mix, finishing off Braxas before dropping to Rhogar's attacks.
I think it was Marcus' Fire Elemental that strolled through the snow and finished off Rhogar. The heartbrokern Sonya, trying to nab the unrevealed glyph in the unused corner of the map, found herself stuck in a pit trap. As the battle wore on, it came down to my wounded Heirloom and Isamu against his Sonya and Marcu. Marcu flipped on him twice, but I was unable to make use of the opportunity. Heirloom finished off Sonya before dying which gave Marcu a much-needed life. Isamu managed to vanish a couple of times, but eventually fell, giving Marcus (and Marcu), the win.
Loss (0-1, 580 pts destroyed)
As we waited for Round 2 to start, I was talking to Greg Jr.. He had won his first match and I told him "Well, you'll lose your next match, and I'll win mine. Then we'll meet in round 3 and I'll beat you." He didn't believe me (ahh, youth).
Round 2
vs Greg Sr. (Greater Ice Elemental, Kurrok the Elementalist, 5 x Fire Elementals, 3 x Air Elementals, 2 x Water Elementals, Sahuagin Raider)
on an unnamed Marvel map (+1 Attack glyph)
Greg moved up his Fire Elementals first, and did some damage, but Braxas was able to get past the screen and started wreaking havoc in Greg's starting zone. After melting two or three small elementals, I tried a normal attack to take down Kurrok, which whiffed badly. On the next turn, I opted for the acid breath and it paid off big-time with a dead Kurrok (and another small elemental). Greg meanwhile had turned up the +1 Attack glyph and combined attacks took down Braxas. The rest of the battle was frustrating for Greg. Although he took out Raelin, Rhogar and Ana kept healing the damage my heroes suffered. By the time the battle was over, my four surviving heroes were all wound-free.
Win (1-1, 1180 pts destroyed)
As Paul was determining the pairings for round 3 he mentioned that I would indeed play Greg Jr. Three of the four parts of my prediction had come true…
Round 3
vs Greg Jr. (Rhogar Dragonspine, Iron Golem, Raelin (RotV), Zetacron, Isamu, 3 x Warforged Soldiers)
on Just Passing Through (Pit Trap and Initiative glyphs)
With my first turn, I moved Raelin to the glyph within reach and got stuck in a pit trap. I didn't mind too much as I didn't plan on moving her much after that. Then I launched the Braxas missile. She was able to take out 2/3 of his Warforged and Zetacron before dropping to an Iron Golem attack. The next round or two were a blur as Greg Jr lost his Iron Golem, his Raelin, and all but one of his Warforged (which was parked on the Initiative glyph) and I lost Raelin, Ana, and Heirloom. This left us each with a Rhogar and Isamu, plus he still had his warforged parked on the glyph.
Thanks to some healing from Ana before she died, my Rhogar was at full health while Greg's was half-wounded. That turned out to be the difference. Our two Rhogar's met and squared off toe-to-toe for four straight turns with no wounds. Then his Rhogar landed a 3-wound shot on mine, evening things up. However, on the next turn, I rolled all four skulls and he got only one shield. After that, his Isamu failed to vanish (which is par for the course with Gregory and Isamu) and dropped. The last Warforged Soldier proved to be a tricky. Gregory positioned him well in a spot where he could continually tactially switch to ensure height advantage no matter where I put Rhogar. The little guy lasted three or four turns before Rhogar finally finished him off.
Win (2-1, 1780 pts destroyed) (and a prophecy fulfilled :))
Round 4
vs Yagyunina (Braxas, Krug, Marcu Esenwein, 5 x Goblin Cutters)
on Just Passing Through (Initiative and an unrevelaed glyph)
Braxas managed to melt several of the Goblin Cutters, but as Yag said in his battle reports, they hacked up Braxas pretty easily. It didn't help that Braxas whiffed on more acid breath attempts than average. Yag's Braxas got near the rest of my heroes and I think he melted Ana before Rhogar hacked the dragon down. Then Krug came in and just made mincemeat of everybody. This was yet another tournament loss to Yaguyninja, making him a perfect 5-0 against me if I'm not mistaken.
Loss (2-2, 2048 pts destroyed)
Round 5
vs Justin?/Ullarfan (Krug, Raelin (RotV), Deadeye Dan, Tagawa Samurai, Krav Maga, 2 x Marro Stingers)
on Husk of the Holdfast (unsure of the glyphs)
This battle started off great for me. I launched Braxas ahead and started raining down acid on the squads in his start zone. All of the Krav Maga, one Tagawa Samurai, and four of the Marro Stingers were dead almost immediately. Then, a switch was flipped somewhere and it all came crashing down. As if I didn't have enough trouble with Krug in the previous round, the troll was even more deadly this time. With Raelin positioned on the glyph in the middle, Krug was always within her aura. And with my less-than stellar attack rolls, I was only able to make Krug angry with a wound here and there. And we all know an angry Krug is no fun to deal with. Compounding the problem, I missed most of my healing rolls with Rhogar and Ana as Krug single-handedly killed my entire army (I think he got one turn with the Stingers in the early round, but the rest was literally all Krug). The Krav, the Samurai, and Deadeye Dan were never activated.
Loss (2-3, 2398 pts destroyed)
Thanks for another fun tournament Bahde.
