View Full Version : OK WOTC, can you answer me this.

Since WOTC reads these boards, can someone from WOTC answer these simple, reasonable questions:

When can we expect a new wave of Classic HS, and not a continuation of the D-series of D&D recycled figures?

When can we expect a new large figure or terrain expansion?

When can we expect a new Master Set?

Thank you,
Cigarman

WOTC may read the boards but they are not going to answer these questions for you especially when you are being so obnoxious about it.

Oh and since you are such an expert on how mistreated and neglected we are by WOTC because we are getting re-used sculpts for our game...you should go and check ot the 2 brand new board games WOTC is putting out that are using the previous minis sculpts but only unpainted.

When you own the company (WOTC) or any company then you can decide how they spend their money...if yo dont like it..then stop playing...get over it and yourself.

I'm not exactly sure where Cigarman was being obnoxious in his above post, Onacara... he just asked the questions, didn't demand the classic HS, new terrain, and/or new master set now, and said thanks at the end...

Perhaps the questions aren't simple (I imagine they aren't), but if asked politely I don't see how they aren't reasonable...

Perhaps Cigarman has posted obnoxiously elsewhere, but that's a pretty extreme response to the OP.

Just for the record, I'm enjoying the D&D range myself. I'm new, so I'm catching up. If I was putting together a wish list, number one would be to cycle through the old expansions and re-release them more rapidly, so that there is not so much difficulty in getting some of the older figures - but I realise there are probably solid business reasons that stop that happening.

No matter how many times you ask, no one's going to give you a straight answer. Heroscape can go down whatever path WOTC leads it, and I'm fine with that. From your actions in more threads than just this, I think it would do you some good to just accept it.

Since WOTC reads these boards, can someone from WOTC answer these simple, reasonable questions:

Very polite  essentially calling them stupid if they don't answer said questions.

This is followed by him essentially demanding answers as if they owe him one.

In other words, this is not how you politely ask for answers.

Surly, if not obnoxious.

Be that as it may, WotC has been *very* productive in its time with 'Scape, so I ain't complaining. I just wish my store credit at CSI would last forever, but at the rate WotC is churning out (quality) figs, it'll be done very soon.

Cigarman, (a) we aren't really due for a new Master Set for awhile, and (b) you won't get a straight answer to any of your questions, so collect what you can/want/need, and enjoy, is my suggestion.

Cheers!

With much respect, that's not how he started the 'letter'.

He didn't demand an answer: put the 'can' the OP used in there and he's asking if they can answer, not demanding the questions be answered.

Tone is easy to misread, is all: but like I said, perhaps he demanded answers elsewhere.

Anyway, moot point, I'm loving the D&Dscape, (wish it was a bit cheaper in the very few Australian retail stores it's in though - $20 AUS a set) can't wait for Kurrock the Elementalist.

We just got a response from our Marketing contact at WOTC:

"Our current plan is to reprint when inventory dictates, so nothing is “on hold”.

We can certainly place wave 4 at the head of the list for reprinting however.

Having said that, we are a year away from seeing more old waves as Wave 1

and Wave 8 are still on hand and 2 more D&D sets are coming this year."

What about large expansions?

No large expansions in the current plans as far as we know.

This was culled from the Declaration in Support of a Wave 4 Reprint! thread this past June. I think that it is the latest info we have been given on the status of classic scape reprints.

Alright ... this is ridiculus. The original post is
A - Impolite
B - Out of place of where such a post should go
C - Old questions

You are acting as if you have the special powers to make them talk. This post should have been placed here in the Official Wizards Feed back thread (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=21610)Where our GREATLY appreciated Wizards members are doing there best, along with the locals that help design now, to answer these very questions and more. But it becomes hard and pointless, when some one (I mean many) individuals, who dont do there research, try to create another new thread, asking the same questions, some one did a month ago.
I would also like to point out that with out your research being done, you essentially waste our space. this isn't an unlimited free reign server. We need to take care of it. This can be achieved by posting well thought out and pre arranged posts, that HAVE NOT BEEN POSTED BEFORE HAND. Or answered in another thread. We have limited memory, so please do try to save it.
With that, this thread is in the wrong, the arguments are pointless, and lets just move on please.

Like any large company, they likely won't even tell most of their employees until the last moment.

This kind of planning is done at a high level Board of Directors/CEO/CFO.

I agree that a return to the classic would be nice but if these figures did not have D1/D2/D3 on them would you look at them any differently then classic?

Yes, there is a near endless supply of large and huge figures in the D&D mini collection. There is not, however, a large supply of 9-12 height figures who would fit onto heroscape hexes.

That is a terrible analogy for this situation. Granted some of the sculpts in the new DnD line are a little weak (the most notable of these is the DeepWyrm Drow, and even in this case I don't think they are THAT bad) but to call "classic" scape a hamburger and DnD scape dog Poop is just foolishness. There were some amazing sculpts in D1 (GIE is just too cool, The PK's are also bad-ass) and there are plenty of "classic" scape figures that have been pretty weak in terms of the sculpt (Nikita's come instantly to mind). I'd say that all in all the DnD releases have been about on part with the "classic" releases in terms of looks, and probably exceed the previous standard in terms of abilities and mechanics.

It's one thing to dislike the DnD banner or the "changes" that WOTC has made (or is making) but don't confuse your emotional attachment to "classic" with your emotional distance to DnD. Wanting a return to "core" Scape is an profoundly poor and immature reason to hate on DnD Scape.

Chardris1287

I wouldn't mind going to original scape. I like to think of DnD as a cool side trip through the world of Scape. They can't do the DnD theme forever can they? People would get tired. however, I really like the DnD theme for heroscape, but only because I'm a big fan of DnD itself.

For my taste it's more like salisbury steak and hamburger. The differences are primarily in the presentation. Most people that like one like the other even if they have a preference for one over the other. And either makes for a satisfying repast on a Saturday evening. Anything beyond that is more of a perception issue than anything else.

To be fair, you have been pretty vocal about your dislike of the current business model WOTC is using with regards to heroscape.

I didn't find what you said in the OP particualrly rude but you MUST know that you'll never get an answer to questions like this on a public forum. All the stuff you asked here has been (and still is being) discussed at nausea in several threads all over the boards and the only solid answers we get are small hints from design staffers like Guru and GB who basicly say "Core Scape is not 100% dead". That's as close to an answer as your going to get I'm afraid.

Now I understand that tone is a very hard thing to pick up on in a fourm of this nature, and maybe you were honestly just asking. But your OP does come off as a little abrasive, particularly the title of this thread. It's like your challenging them to answer your questions, which makes the rest of the post seem well almost angry.

I can understand why someone would call you on it, even if that someone was a little abrasive his self...

Cigarman, let me help you see why your original post was perceived as being belligerant:

Since WOTC reads these boards, can someone from WOTC answer these simple, reasonable questions:

When can we expect a new wave of Classic HS, and not a continuation of the D-series of D&D recycled figures?

When can we expect a new large figure or terrain expansion?

When can we expect a new Master Set?

Thank you,
Cigarman

I bolded the important bits. If you wanted to ask politely and reasonably it would have looked like this:

Since WOTC reads these boards, I would appreciate it if someone from WOTC answers these questions:

When can we expect a new wave of Classic HS?

When can we expect a new large figure or terrain expansion?

When can we expect a new Master Set?

Thank you,
Cigarman

The difference is twofold:

1) It makes it clear that you are asking as opposed to making the assumption that WotC owes you a response.

2) It removes negative comments about the existing product which allows it to be an inquiry instead of an accusation.

I thought it was your intent in the original post to be belligerant and to generate a bit of furor in the ongoing D&D debate, but based on your latest post I wonder if perhaps you simply didn't post what you thought you were posting.

So if you found out that the all of the Classic Soulborg figures were actually designed for a different game that got scrapped how would that make you feel?

It wouldn't change my opinion of them. I don't automatically have a problem with reusing figures from other games; I just think the majority of the DnD minis line is poorly done. If we had gotten reused figures from Battleball (for example), I would be fine with it. Battleball figures and Heroscape figures are a very close match.

If every D&D figure was a new sculpt would you like it more?

Yup, most certainly. Half my Heroscape purchases go into the parts bin, so new sculpts that match classic scape would be much more useful to me. I still wouldn't like the switch over theme wise, but I wouldn't dislike it as much as I do now.

Ok, I admit my analogy wasn't the best. I was thinking purely on a visual level, as in hamburger and poop are both brown (usually) and somewhat similar in texture but still look noticeably different, if we add taste to the mix the analogy does break down.

How about, Heroscape is the Last Supper and DnD Minis is No. 5, 1948. Both are paintings, but clearly different styles.

And I will agree that not all DnD scape figures are bad, the Ice Elemental is ok and the Iron Golem is very well done. But, personally, I really don't care for any of the other figures released.

This kind of planning is done at a high level Board of Directors/CEO/CFO.

I seriously doubt the Borad of Directors or C level officers in WoTC are making these decisions. Product line managers make this kind of decision and plot out a business model for their line to the C level guys. They could be making a game about Humpty Dumpty for all tose guys care as long as it is meeting the business goals.

To the subject of the original post:

As for WoTC answering these kinds of questions...They NEVER will. You can hope and pray and ask all you like but you will never get the answers.

Being a subsidary of Hasbro which is a publically traded company, they are bound by the rules of the SEC. If they announce plans for future products, they have to follow through on them, otherwise they can't post profits for the company. I work for a company who has the same kind of problem. Our customers constantly want information on what we are doing, we can't say anything until we KNOW it is going to happen. That means it basically has to be in production before we can announce any kinds of plans. Yes our customers get mad at us and accuse us of holding out on them etc... The posts here are very similiar to posts I see on other boards about the company I work for. We (my company and WoTC) are not evil, not holding back info because it makes us feel good. It is just part of the rules of the game when you are a publically traded company.

If you announce things people/stock holders might make decisions based on these announcemants. If you don't folow through it is reallly bad for the company with the SEC. So basically they are not going to announce anything that is not written in stone (i.e. in production) or their hands become tied to whatever they announced.

I work in a different industry so the rules might be slightly different, but I suspect the rules around this stuff to be pretty much the same across all industries.

And here I thought I was being polite and reasonable with my questions, until trolls like Onacara accuse me of being obnoxious and rude. I can be obnoxious and rude if you really want me to. I thought I would try a different approach this time and be nice and polite. I see what that gets me. I won't repeat that mistake.

Cigarman

~Aldin, using neutral language

Aldin,

Thank you for your constructive comments. I will take your advice under consideration. While I meant to be neutral, perhaps I should have chosen a more neutral tone as you have suggested. Sometimes it is difficult to convey the intended tone or mood on these boards.

Concerning the questions, and the general opinion that no answers will be forthcoming, I do wonder why I can read about the D&D 4.0 release schedule a year in advance, but the HS release schedule is considered some sort of "confidential information" unavailable to the public?

How about this.

Classic is like Classic. DnDscape is like DnDscape. I don't know about you, but I think that pretty much hits the nail on the head. ;)

Anyway, I'm going to try to break it down a bit. Bear with me. ;)

Sculpts: I'll admit that I agree with the general consensus that Classic has better sculpts than DnD. When I think of bad Classic sculpts, these come to mind: WoA, Arrow Gruts, Su-Bak-Na, Heavies.
When I envision all of the bad DnDscape sculpts, well, most of the DnDscape figures instantly pop into my head. Deepwyrm Drow, Torin, Sharwin, Goblin Cutters, Othy, Tandros, etc. Wow.

Classic: 1
DnDscape: 0

Gameplay Quality: Meh. Pretty much the same. I was sitting a little more on the edge of my seat awaiting new Classic waves, but, while I haven't been as excited about MS3 and D1, D2's got me counting down the days. I think expansions from both have been equally beneficial to the well-being of the game. Tie. Both teams get a point.

Classic: 2
DnDscape: 1

Other stuff: The bases are getting smaller. So what? Yeah, they won't match, but is that going to really affect your enjoyment of the game? No. No points to anyone. DnD has an almost unlimited supply of figures, especially huge ones, which everyone wants to see more of. Points to them for that.

Classic: 2
DnDscape: 2

In my mind, Classic and DnDscape are equal, and I don't think that will change. I think most people are riled up about WOTC reusing figures, and when you look at it from WOTC's perspective, if it is cheaper to do that, that means they make more, and might attract more buyers so they buy more, so WOTC makes more. When you look at it from the point-of-view of the game itself, it introduces an easy way to get a greater variety of figs, faster and easier.
It's win-win.

Disagree with me if you want to, but I'm holding my ground. This is good for Heroscape, but if you want to be pessimistic and negative about the ordeal, that's your problem, not mine. Far bid from me to keep you from doing so.

The thread title sounds like you are challenging WOTC. Perhaps you could be more polite. Besides there have been just about a million discussions on this topic.

I am sure you didn't mean to sound demanding. I also understand its sometimes hard to post what your feeling online.

As for this being discussed "a million times", has anyone gotten an answer from WOTC? WOTC publishes release info for D&D 4.0 almost a year in advance, but why is HS release info some sort of secret?

Thanks,

the answers to both those questions have been answered already my friend:

I didn't find what you said in the OP particualrly rude but you MUST know that you'll never get an answer to questions like this on a public forum. All the stuff you asked here has been (and still is being) discussed at nausea in several threads all over the boards and the only solid answers we get are small hints from design staffers like Guru and GB who basicly say "Core Scape is not 100% dead". That's as close to an answer as your going to get I'm afraid.

The second reason was touched on by loborocket:

It's a"big secret" (as you put it) because they can't let people know until it's 100% for sure that it's going to actually go down. You can get release updates for DnD so far in advance becuse they are producing them that far in advance. There's no talks about a release for DnD 5e yet but I can assure you they are working on it's development, they just don't have anything solid in terms of a production plan / schedule and so haven't released anything about it yet.

Well if you want to try and get answers, that's fine with me. I wont be holding my breath though. Also since there are numerous threads already about this, go ask your questions in those. We don't have unlimited memroy on the server so stop using it up by making threads when they already exist.

I'm sorry, but I'm a sucker for some great irony! Irony FTW!!!

I love me some irony!

Basically, you guys are throwing this guy under the bus because he is wasting space, but you guys are using (see wasting) the same space throwing him under said bus.

I just don't get it.

Well he already made the thread and it doesn't make since to go to a different thread to talk about this one. The difference is that he could of asked the questions in one of the other threads devoted to this topic, where as it would be a tad difficult and out of context to tell him what we think he did wrong in a different thread.

Jeez. I feel like road kill already. I think I'll think twice before I ever post here again, carefully consider it, and then not bother.
Hostile environments and attitudes I don't need.

Thanks for those who threw me some support, but the rest of you need to take a chill pill.

If anyone has any solid info on the future of HS releases, can they please collect it, post it, and sticky it where it can be easily found so I can settle my curiosity and not get crucified for asking.

If you're congratulating everyone for preventing another "negative-nancy", "asks-the-same-questions-as-every-other-whiney-ahole" from ruining other peoples' time on this site, then I agree.

If you were being sarcastic, I don't agree.
(I think this was your only post in this thread, so I can't gauge the intent of your response)

Cigarman was rude, whatever he claims he intended, and did start a completely unnecessary thread to rehash the same tired subjective complaints every other WotC-basher has. And you know what? He hasn't contributed anything of use to the community at large (he has lots of C3G posts, where I'm not sure if they were meaningful or not, so can't judge in that regard); but he feels like he can demand answers of WotC to questions that they probably don't even give definite responses about to the designers. Give me a break.

OK SCAPERS, can you answer me this.

Okay, I am teasing. Just trying to break the massive sheets of ice chilling over the site of our beloved game. I can only assume it is beloved based on the emotional attachment we all have to the game. I check this site daily if not more. I can tell based on the rapid response of so many, I am not the only one.

I understand that we all love this game, our game even. By us buying it, talking about it, loving it, we make it ours. And much like all of our other "ours" we become very defensive when it comes under attack. It could be someone dissin' our favorite team, our favorite candidate or the makers of our favorite game.

It took me a long time to understand the word tolerance. I don't have to agree, or even like your opinion, but I have to respect it and tolerate it. The same right I have to dislike your opinion is the same right you have to have your opinion.

People have been going on for five pages about CM's original post. Some people argue that his post is wasting space on the server, others argue it has been rehashed before, some complain about his tone and I think I picked up some people arguing he doesn't even have a right to ask these questions.

I will admit, his original post came across a lil "snarky". Maybe that wasn't his intentions, maybe it was... but that is the difficult thing about communication, everyone else brings their own interpretations in. What alot of people have failed to notice, or if they did, they kept it to themselves, is the responses he recieved were EQUALLY "snarky". Some people were upset by his comments, tone, negligence, whatever and retaliated with their own remarks. What no one has noticed, is that it is possible that CM was upset by the lack of knowledge, support, feedback etc from WotC. All of the sudden, the very thing he is being scolded for is being displayed back, ten fold. Remember what I said, the same right you have to think [insert opinions about CM] is the same right he has to be frustrated with WotC.

CM "challenged" WotC, and alot of people all of the sudden went into defensive mode. All I ask is for everyone to step back and not immediately react with hostility, not just to CM, but the "newbs" who come on here and ask if Flying cause disengagement or even the WinonaVampire who went on a page long rant. I want to come to this site to talk about Heroscape, or other interests that the people I have come to know here want to discuss, and I really think, deep down, that is what everyone else here wants too.

There is so much hate and anger in this world, I can get all the snide comments I want heading down to the gas station a block away. Let's have a community where everyone feels accepted or at the very least... tolerated and can log on and just enjoy our game.

Your right WinonaVamp, CM I opoligize for being snarky. My advice is not to worry about thinking about what you are going to post, but think about a thread you are going to start. I have to take my own advice since there are a few threads I started whn I first joined that I regret making. That being said, you will still encounter people on the site that seem to always be snarky, just ignore them or take them with a grain of salt and forget about them.

Tribute, winonavampire. Thanks for the post. I also want this to be a friendly and welcoming site. (Though I do NOT feel like Tenderheart.)
But let's give out some tribute here as well. The site has been getting a lot more polite recently, especially since we got the question dump, people have been minding their manners. Especially Onacara (don't blast me for saying that, big O).

But sometimes people do act like jerks around here, and sometimes a little Onacara can be a good thing. I just tuned in to read this thread, and you know what? I gave Onacara +rep for his reply.

Cigarman really did go way across the line, demanding answers from WOTC and seeming to suggest they have done nothing for the game lately.

Of course I didn't read through the entire thread, and I am sure that quite a few of the people got overly nasty. It happens, but I don't think it is normal these days.

I don't think that it is so much that he doesn't have the right to ask the question. It is much more so that none of us really have the right to the answer to the question. We just won't know unless we become majority share holders in Hasbro. Then we have the right, the duty even, to ask those questions.

Spot on truth.

As a new person to Heroscape and this site, I can tell you that winonavampire is spot on... this emotional intelligence coming from what I assume is a cold hearted and perpetually hungry creature of the night is a little off putting, but it takes all types I suppose. Maybe she's the twinkly kind?

And that's the point. I won't bore you with my RL experience but I will say, I know that if you want a community to grow you must tolerate diversity.

With a fringe-ish game like this (especially fringe in Australia) you want more people involved. More people buy more stuff, making it more viable to produce more stuff. Therefore, the more welcoming this site (as the only real online presence) is, the more people are encouraged to be involved. Community leaders are especially important in this regard.

Not saying CM wasn't over the top, but his core queries don't warrant the flamage some have given him.
Plenty of constructive answers have been provided to, don't want to gloss over that point.

And overall people have been really welcoming to me as a newbie, so that's encouraging.
