Retlaw's Gencon 2010 Pictures - Updated 08-08-10

As in years past, I'll update this post daily (sometimes twice a day) during Gencon with pictures, comments, etc. If the pictures are small, click on them for a larger version.

Monday August 2nd: - boxes in the basement

Since this first post is being made on Monday, the only picture is of all the boxes of terrain, etc. in the basement. Doesn't seem like they've been down there for almost a whole year. I have fought off the tempatation to open them all and build a gigantic map (would have been a real pain to re-box it all).

Between now and Wednesday afternoon I have move it all upstairs and load it into the van. As long as I don't wait until Wednseday morning to start it shouldn't be too bad. Actually after I took the picture, I brought the first four boxes up with me (four in front on the right side of the picture -- if that matters to anyone).

Monday August 2nd - update:

A little over half of those boxes are already upstairs now. My step-son (recent Purdue grad -- and he has a good job :)) was here for a while tonight and helped me bring some of them up. My 13yr old daughter even made a couple of trips (she took care of all the wave boxes on the top). All that is left for me tomorrow night is the last three rows of larger master set boxes on the left. Of course there is still loading them into the van on Wednesday morning (early before it gets too hot).

I also have a very understanding wife -- I didn't have to take them to the garage. They are stacked in the our entryway. This will actually be easier to load into the van as it is a shorter path from the basement out the front door than going around and through the garage. Plus the garage is already full of junk.

Tuesday August 3rd

Not really much to say today. I'll be bringing the rest of the boxes up later this evening and then load the van in the morning before it gets hotter (it's going to be in the 90s all week and not cooling off much at night). The local PBS will be re-airing a special on "Video Games Live" tonight, so I'll make sure to watch that. One Gencon related item showed up on the Indianapolis Star's website today -- a link to pictures from last years Gencon (http://indianapolis.metromix.com/events/essay_photo_gallery/revisit-gen-con-2009/1393491/content). If you were there see if you can find yourself in one of the crowd shots. I need to get a bright red mohawk before.

I also need to start determining what army I want to use in General Wars on Thursday. I was thinking of using: Sparticus, Kato Katsuro, and Hatamoto Taro, but it is 10 points over the limit :( (actually I doubt any opponents would complain about the 10 points).

One more item -- if you are up late tonight (or early Wednesday morning), make sure to look to the north. There is supposed to be a good chance for the northern lights due to some recent sun activity.

Wednesday August 4th - Setup

Well, I got the van loaded this morning. Wanted to get it done before it got hot, but today started out hot (in the 80s at 9:00a). I made sure the van was parked in the shade so we don't end up with a bunch of HS plastic puddles instead of terrain. Here are a few pictures of the van before and after loading.

For some reason they only turn on minimal lighting (that's why the pictures are so dark - I was using a inexpensive camera with a weak flash) and don't have the AC on. Thursday August 5th: -- Includes Wave 12 pictures

The games have begun! :) Of course I didn't do to well in General Wars and dropped out of Capture the Flag (more on why later). First some pictures from the General Wars games:

Now for the afternoon games -- Capture the Flag and Smack Down. I was going to play Capture the Flag and had my army with me and everything, but one small problem came up. I assumed that since WotC had given us some Wave 12/D2 for prizes that they would also be selling them. Well I was wrong. The only Heroscape at the WotC booth is a small display of BftU which is on a lower shelf at the counter where they are selling D&D, Magic, etc. -- well there was one unopened box of BftU on the top shelf behind the counter. In fact, if you wanted to see Wave 12/D2, the only place was at the Heroscape games where Mark had one on display. So, why did this mess up my army - well as most of you know I store the Heroscape terrain and as "payment" WotC sends me Heroscape product as it comes out. When I got home Wednesday, wave 12/D2 was on my front porch. So, again assuming that WotC would be selling it, I included two figures in my army for Capture the Flag. But when I found out that no one else could get wave 12/D2 I didn't think it would sporting to include it in my army, so I dropped out of the game.

Friday August 6th - RofB, Day 1 of Championship

Ok, first an apology -- the first pictures are from the RofB scenario book, but it was hard to get good pictures due to the glare of the lights in the room and the cheap camera I was using. I didn't get a good picture of the first room instructions/story. I'll try to get one tomorrow (I'll take a better camera with a polarized filter and see if I can get rid of the glare). Also, I didn't take and pictures of the build pages since I know they wouldn't come out (and besides I think the build has pretty much been figured out already).

1) I think the "bribe" is actually the game report slip that Mark was handing out at the start of each round. That is, the form you turn back in saying who won, lost, etc. But the brige story works for me. ;)

3) The flash makes the White Wyrmling look a little washed out. He does look better in person than in the pictures.

Sorry, I didn't stay until the end of the Smack Down and Capture the Flag events. Once I dropped out of the event, I made another run through the dealer hall and then headed home. It was the last day of my son's marching band camp and they always do a "run through" at the end of the last practice and I wanted to be there for that. I know others were taking pictures, so hopefully one of them will post pictures. And today I won't be there at 8:00p to take trophy pictures either -- my son has to be back to the school tonight by 7:00p (he's working - i.e., getting paid -- with a local community theater group -- he works the sound booth for them).


To all the thank yous -- you're welcome. I remember how much I enjoyed seeing pictures from toy fair, etc. when Hasbro had Heroscape displays there and this is just my way of returning the favor.

Valkyrie are the generals. Archkyrie aren't. Go and read the descriptions of maps in the RotV master set map book; there are several mentions to different Archkyrie. I'm not sure what the difference is, but Archkyrie aren't generals.

New Archkyrie - Evil again.

What will be the dividing line between Utgar and NEAK (New Evil Archkyrie). Utgar already has Evil units across all genres except for Historical. It doesn't make sense if NEAK would have the same exact figures that Utgar was gonna get anyway. It sounds unnecessary. Unless they introduced a new evil theme, like Evil Historical.

Actually we will only get a new archkyrie if the player wins. So, there's a good chance we won't get anything. It's all down to how that deciding player plays. ;)

The easel held up the plaque with the video picture frame in it, so it was from stay_golden_PONYBOY (who did the championship plaque -- which was way cool).

I just got home, so it will be a little while before I post any pictures from today. I only took a few, but yes Onacara, I finally did get some pictures of the trophies you made -- they looked nice.
