May a character use a special attack every time?

If so, are there advantages to ever using a normal attack?

Are there times when normal attacks are mandatory?

Thanks
Phil

PhilSituational. Take Dead Eye Dan as an example. If he moves, he cannot use his specials, but he still has a range 10 normal attack and so he can use this if he wants.

deathwalker 9k...special attack all figure adjacent to targeted units are affected...so if he is adjacent to the unit he is attacking he is in danger...might want to think about not using the special in this situation...unless the is tactical value in the risk.

Remember that special attacks are NEVER modified by anything (glyph, aura, height).

So, here is one (of so many) example where it would be better NOT to use a special attack. Suppose your Mimring is adjacent to an opponent figure and Mimring has height advantage. No other opponents figures are around. You have the choice to attack it with the Fire Line Special attack at 4 dice OR attack with the normal attack at 5 dice (4+1 for height).

It really will always depend on the current situation. The Mimring example above is a perfect example of one situation where obviously it only makes sense to use a normal attack :!:

Other times you may really want to think about which attack will be most beneficial. For instance, there are characters with special powers that allow them to be protected from :
normal adjacent attacks
normal ranged attacks
any ranged attacks
any attack
etc,...

The power lies in understanding your opponents figs. and knowing how to best attack them! Know what will and won't work! You may have to 'wing it' for the 1st attack but pay attention to how your opponent defends against your attack,.... :D

:D Does this confuse anybody when on the offense. I mean to say do you ever "stutter" the attack and forget what's the best way to hit your enemy?

Often times I end up, . . . :ponder: , . . . :fencing: , . . . :duh: , . . . :frustrated: , . . . while my opponent, . . . :neener: .

Mimring is a great example. Why use Fireline if you can just use an attack of 5?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you can only use a figures special attack once each round.

Incorrect. Unless specifically written on the Card, you CAN use the Special attack of a character on every activation.

Nilfiem is also a good example of this. attack with 6 (7 if height) vs 4 for the special....

 Best advice, (IMO) : LEARN YOUR OPPONENTS

Learn where and how to hit them, otherwise you'll keep wasting attacks :!:

:duh: For some reason I could have sworn I remembered someone telling me this but I never read the rulebook afterword to see if it was right, man that just made a lot of the units a lot better for me.

One reason to use Fireline in this case would be if the defender has Counterstrike.
