October 1st, 2006, 08:28 PM
The staff of the Heroscape Codex is proud to announce the release of the issue 4 of the fan-created magazine. The Codex is devoted to fans of Heroscape, either casual or devoted, and includes a wide range of game advice, new scenarios, custom units, and much more. The Codex is created entirely by fans of the game, and made available free through the Codex website.

You can download issue #4 of the Heroscape Codex from the Codex site, available at:

www.hscodex.com

I have a sad announcement to make at this time. Imax has decide that with his current work load he can no long continue as the Editor in Chief of the HsCodex. He was a catalyst in making the codex happen and I am heartbroken to see him go. It was a joy and honour to work with the man genius.

I will be taking over as Editor in Chief. I will be requiring some help. We need two people to come on board as Senior Editors. Anyone interest please contact me here with a PM for more details on these positions.

Also as this issue wraps up the first year of publication for the codex, we would like to know what you the readership like and dislike about the codex. What would you like to see more of and what doesn’t turn you on?

This is your magazine give us you’re thought, and opinions.

Yeah, I'm really sorry I won't be able to continue working on this magazine. It's been a great year, and I've been really lucky to be part of it. I especially need to thank Atmospro and Truth for their help with the Codex - no way it would have happened without them.

With Atmospro taking over the helm, the Codex is in astonishingly good hands. We're very lucky to have him.

Enjoy the magazine!

Hope this step down doesn't mean you won't have time to contribute occasionally, Imax. :) Certainly nothing held against you for it; surviving in the real world is sadly a frequently time-consuming endeavour, and we're lucky to have you in the community any way we get you. (And it can't be too bad, as I notice you have like 600 more posts than me, lol... do you guys do that?)
Downloading the latest Codex now. :)

No, Kark, I should still be able to jump in now and then. But now that I'm self-employed, I find myself working until 1 or 2 AM almost every night just to keep up. There was no way I was going to be able to keep up with my paying work if I kept sinking a lot of time into the Codex. Worse, if I kept the gig, there was a good chance that the Codex would end up pulling last place in the priority contest, and it would be late all the time and poorly edited.

Atmospro will be able to do a much better job. To be perfectly honest, I've been almost a figurehead for the last issue. I arranged some editing, wrote one piece, and shuffled files around. Atmospro did nearly everything else. He deserves to have his name on the office door.

I still stop in and check things out just have not been posting. Also I still plan on making some terrain to get some funds up for the site for Truth.

but anyway, I just wanted to say you guys have all really just out-done yourselves again! The mag is top notch and I don't think it could possibly get any better. You guys are absolutely great!!

What ive read so far is great... Its really developed in but a year.

Do we have the Codex issues in the downloads section here? I ask because my work's filter is blocking the Codex site and I can't download it. :(

Out of curiosity, why are the editors' names listed as "?"?

EDIT: After a quick skim-through... um... never mind. This issue has far more typos/misspellings, etc. than any previous. Not trying to be critical here, but the standard that was established with the earlier issues was not met. I proofread a couple of the articles, and I'm reasonably sure those are okay, but I saw many other errors, even on major headlines. I'm totally willing to help out more on this, if we're short on proofreaders.

Finrod I would like to address a number of the concerns you have raised here.

First the editors’ names area with the “?” is a mistake on my part when correcting a couple thing a recompiled with the wrong file (Oops!). Those names now appear in the proper place corrected, along with a few other things if you wish download a new copy.

This issue’s editors were:
Bunjee
Tim Frankovich
Clay Hales

This was a difficult issue to say the least. Basically we are down to Imax and I doing everything. We are both stretched thin with our time. Imax as I stated in a previous post has stepped down as E-I-C. Truth helps out when he can, as this site and RL are taking over more of his time. Articles were late and so on. Everything was done in a rush, not an excuse just a fact.

So the bottom line here folks I need help!! I have some people interested in the Senior Editor jobs. By weeks end they should be place. We’ll need editors/proofreaders. I want to have some more regular write beyond those that we have now. By having a few more hands chipping in and writer/contributors meeting deadlines things should run smoother.
Imax and I have up until now took it upon ourselves and tired to do to much. It’s time for other to come forward and pitch in a little.

I want to address the issue of spelling and why I don’t do the editing of articles. Tell me which spelling is correct for these words.
defense or defence
center or centre
armor or armour
You see while you believe the first spelling to be correct, I do not. I’m Canadian and was brought up on UK English and grammar. Euryon had this argument with someone back on HQ. I agree with the position he took at that time, which was that he wasn’t going to change the card to spelling he knew was wrong. So we both believe we are right. I'm not trying to start an argument, just sharing some insight into why I shouldn’t edit type articles for a magazine that is mostly read by US citizens.

Thanx

I have been reading the zombie story in the codex since it came out. I love reading it every time a new issue is released. Well, I saw that a new codex came out, and I started reading very soon there after. However, I got to the second page and saw a Carr drawing that was covering up a good portion of the words to where I was having a very hard time reading them. I have given up on reading it since I wanted to ask if anyone had the story without the picture. I gave up not in frustration (well a little), but so I could read it entirely and not with the few words my mind adds to it.

I am very excited about another installment of this story, and look forward to being able to read the newest addition.
Thank you all.

Is the Codex available for download through this site or only the HSCodex site?

I believe the decision was made to keep Codex downloads off this site so that if one site or the other had legal trouble, there would be minimal connection between the two and the untroubled one could continue to operate. IIRC.

Thank you Aldin, that's my column. Next issue look for my article entitled Strategic Dominance where we will be looking at how to strategize, battle plans and specific manoeuvres.

Strategy & Tactics is/was (not sure if it is still being published) a real wargaming magazine. I read it alot many years ago, very good read.

atmospro,

Like I said, great read. I grew up playing the 'in magazine' games from Strategy and Tactics (thus the eye rolling). I've figured out that half the population here is a bunch of old grognards so I felt comfortable tossing it into the mix.

The way you divided S&T in Heroscape was very interesting to me since I consider HS to be primarily a tactical game. A campaign in which you had a limited number of points to spread across several scenarios might be what I've previously considered 'strategic'. And yet the way it was split in the article made excellent sense. I'm looking forward to the next one!

I loved the S & T article as well.

While this site is a wealth of strategy and tactics information, it is very difficult to mine. I can't wait for the next article!

Also, about centre vs center, I see no reason to start speaking american. The Queen's English adds a bit of colour to the copy :)

Hmm. The Carr image thing sounds like something keeping the image from being properly faded. With its current level of fading, it's very easy to read the text over it. Just off the top of my head, have you tried updating Adobe Reader, Keeper? Maybe there's some special fading feature that older versions don't support or something.
That said, if we can't figure out the source of the problem, I can certainly send you the original page.

Guys I didn't mean to make this a British vs. American thing. The point was, when I edit I change spelling and grammar to what I know, UK English. That is contrary to the rest of the magazine where most if not all the rest of the editing is done by Americans for a mainly American audience. While the readership of this magazine is global, about 75% to 80% are Americans. For a uniform read, if you will, I think that the editing should by streamlined to that dialect of the language.

Side Note: The magazine has been downloaded in about 50 countries.

Myself, I would recommend updating to 6. 7 has some oddness, they sometimes get a little carried away with the Reader updates and features.

Oh, and Carr displays properly in "Preview" in Mac OSX. And in Reader 7.0.8 in OSX. I hope an update fixes things for you, Keeper.

I totally agree. I'm not saying this because of the cover (though Runehardt's coloring is just rip **** bad ass). The interior just seems to have a perfect balance of graphics, images, photos. And a nice diversity of material.
I gotta give a big THANK YOU to Annerios. He picked up the custom glyph article where I dropped the ball. I plumb ran out of time and besides, I just do not feel confident writing articles.
And I love the Unit Crossfire feature. I hope there's more of those coming! We can't forget those official unit spotlights - much less the beloved Master Set we all began with. I can't wait to see a Crossfire article about the Tarns!
Newbie's Rork Drift is the ultime streamlined battlefield too. Easy to set up and just plain and simple flat battle field. I'm still meaning to set this one up and watch the carnage asada unfold!

Other favorite highlights:
Justjohn's very professional and thorough exclusives make-over. Talk about useful!
The Zaravi results intriques me, but my all that text makes my ADD mind go blink. I'll try to read it.
Kark's fiction - I'll get to it even if it requires I get blood outta stone.
Units by General! I LOVE this feature!
OH HECK

I just downloaded these PDF magazines the other day. You guys are doing some wonderful, wonderful work!

Being an old dude, I've been around many fan-based geek fan-addict materials in my life, from the old Dungeons & Dragons APA 'zines (in all their photocopied glory!) to Wargaming magazines to the Legion Outpost and Marvelmania magazine - and your mags stand well against them all.

Even my early issues of The Dragon and White Dwarf magazine are less opulent than your online 'zines! Bravo and huzzah!

Keep up the good work! Now I just need to find the time to read the back issues cover-to-cover!

I'll start by saying I haven't read through all these issues yet. But I'll say the article on repainting your own Sir Hawthorne and Nerak exclusive units was the best, most useful thing to me I've ever seen written outside of officials channels. By LEAPS and BOUNDS. 10 out of 10!!

I think I learned almost as much as I need to know about how to make a custom of my own out of that article. And ready about someone else's custom probably is a great interest to many readers. Just not me. Trying to turn battle reports into fiction...blah...don't read it.

Fiction? I can usually tell in the first graph, sometimes the first sentence if the writer has talent. So fan-fiction I usually don't read.

The feature stories such as on Sgt. Drake in the last issue was also interesting and the types of stories I'm more likely to read.
