View Full Version : the second worst thing that can happen to heroscape cards?

Recently when adding some new figures to our ever increasing stack of heroscape cards and figures, we ran into a very very big problem.
the dreaded,
the terrifying,
the deadly,
CAT Wee!
Almost our entire stack of heroscape cards was decimated by a Cat having his first accident in the house in 5 years.
So here's a two parter:
What is the worst thing that has befallen you and your Heroscape collection, and how did you bounce back?
Does anyone have any suggestions about how to bounce back from losing so many cards, is it possible to order just the heroscape cards?
(I did find the Heroscape Card Database in PDF files on the site to be printed on 11x17 sheets. Any suggestions on what thickness of cardstock to print them on? Unfortunately for me they have helpful tooltips and Erratas (some of which are incorrect according to the latest FAQ) which make them look unlike the original)
Thanks fellas.

We have a dog with a similar problem. I just invested in Memorex Keepers (colored plastic CD/DVD sleeves that perfectly fit a Heroscape card) to avoid urine, drink spills, etc. The downside to the Keepers is that you can't read the writing on the card all that well because the tint is a little too dark. Also, they don't provide total protection since they are open at the back to fit the cards in.
And no, I haven't had a card disaster yet (knock on wood).

It has felt like a disaster when someone is careless or lets their children play with the cards and they get a knick or a bend or a scratch or whatever. I've never had anything disastrous happen. I've been pretty pleased with the tiles, they've had stuff spilled on them before and are super easy to clean up. I also have an extra set of almost every unique that I set aside to let little kids play with. It doesn't matter if those get bent or whatever, and then the kid has some pieces of their own to play with.

What are you all looking at me for?
In all seriousness, I recently was gently tossing my friend's Charos back to him and he got annoyed.
Don't throw my stuff. You can go ahead and throw YOUR figures, but not mine!
The opportunity was too great to resist.
No! Don't throw them at me!
Of course, this scattered the figures everywhere as they bounced off my friend, but I was eventually able to find them all. And also make a lame joke about scattering Deathreavers.

;) I use clear card sleeves that only have an open slit at the back of the bottom. They are available at hobby stores. I keep one of every card in one, plus multiple Uncommon/Common Heroes.

If your whole set is ruined, might I suggest Trading Card Sized cards (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showpost.php?p=219842&postcount=1)
They look good & might be easier to manage.

Put the cards in the freezer. The pee will freeze, but when they dry it should evaporate. It is very weird science, but with some careful work the cards may be useable and not really show the damange (unless cat pee is so gross that you threw out your cards).

For future protection, you could always try lamination. There are local stores in my area that charge only 25 cents per foot for lamination. You can get 4 (or 5, if you're really good) cards across at one time and it's usually pretty cheap.
I don't think I've ever spent more than 2 or 3 bucks to laminate large batches of cards at a time. And by large, I mean 30 or 40 or so. Lamination is a really cheap alternative for keeping the cards protected and the added benefit is that you can still read the print, as opposed to the darkened tint from the (some, anyway) protective sleeves.

You guys have never failed to impress.
Those trading card sized cards are wonderful, additionally we Heroscape players used to dabble in MTG when we were younger, so we have Pro Deck Protector sleeves already.
Thank you guys for the responses, It feels good to not have to play our favorite miniature game with crackling; foul smelling cards that are merely shells of their former glory.

Card protectors are a must-have...We have just enough for a couple of large armies at a time. ;)

Don't ever let your nephew set down a leaky water gun on your gaming table! I didn't realize what had transpired until I went to pull Marcus from the stack of Einar heroes, and the entire pile was soft and damp. With quick action, I was able to soak up the moisture by placing individual cards between paper towels and stacking encyclopedias (remember those things?;)) on top of them. The print on the cards was fine, but a few came out slightly warped.

My cat didn't actually pee on the cards. She just knocked over a glass of water onto them. Our soaked Tarn Viking card fell into two pieces: the basic game side and the master game side. Good thing we only need one of those.

Send me a list of what you had and I might be able to help you replace some of them. I've got an insane amount of Heroscape, and quite a bit of doubles.
We could trade, and I'll just store them away for a couple years and maybe the pee smell will be gone.

The worst I've had is the experience of a buddy of mind spilling lemonade all over my cards during a game. Now all my heroscape cards are kept in ziplock bags.

I used to stay up late getting drunk and playing Heroscape with a friend of mine. I felt like a prison guard trying to keep my scape alive. He was notorious for cheating, spilling drinks and stepping on my cats. He had to keep his drink off the table.
So far it's working still.

QFT, folks. Laminating is the way to go.

My OCD would never let anything happen to my cards, I store them in sleeves I got here: http://www.sleevetown.com/plastic-cd-sleeves.shtml
and keep them all nicely organized in a CD box. Also NO food or drinks on the game table, just in case, and NO removing cards from their sleeves. Some do have little nicks and tears but that is how they came out of the packaging, so sometimes it's a little unavoidable.

Laminating can cost a few bucks. I know someone who has a lot of laminated cards. They don't fit as nicely into his binder as he would like. If anyone is interested in saving money and just trading your unlaminated for his laminated, send me a PM and I'll check with him.
