That reminds me of something I would love to hear Tom Vasal say in one of his Dice Tower videos. If you haven't seen any of them, he has a massive collection of board games, which he displays behind him in most of his videos.

C3G has grown HUGE. So having multiple mods becomes more and more necessary as we grow. We could basically justify having our own site at this point even.

Margloth

No, C3G is so successful because of our Public and their dedication to playtesting.

Margloth
October 27th, 2011, 03:29 PM
Yes, yes, that's important too... but the practical fact of the matter is it would be much harder to keep the project so streamlined, efficient, and in the public eye without all the maintanence work the mods do.

Not that the project wouldn't work, it just wouldn't work as well.

Both statements are correct. Us Mods keep things in order, and order is what has kept C3G on track and focused since it started, but ALL of the people in the group fuel the group with the dedicated work.

Walking. I find that about 10000 steps a day is enough to tilt the balance. Nothing too strenuous, but worth the time investment, and a good time to think about stuff (from important stuff to C3G drafts).

What johnny139 says. Walking is pretty much the only exercise I do get. Back around 2004 I hiked pretty regularly. There are tons of great trails about 2-1/2 to 3 hours from me, but I headed out every Saturday. Very hot summers and high gas prices put the halt on that. However, there is a 1.7 mile block at work that I walk regularly, and there are parks and greenways in Nashville that I walk on weekends.

There were some other things I did that helped my health a lot, though not necessarily out of a healthy mindset. My choices have been more out of a change in what I want. Getting older does that. :)

First, I simply stopped drinking sodas. I drink unsweetened loose leaf tea and water now. I will drink sweet tea in restaurants, and I will drink a soda very rarely (as in, once a month at most).

Second, I simply realized that most foods are heavily salted anyways, so I stopped reaching for the salt shaker. I don't cut back to low sodium foods, mind you. I simply accept whatever salt is already on the food. Only exception is eggs.

Finally, I cut way back on eating at fast food restaurants. I haven't cut it completely, but I'll opt more towards the sit-down establishments and non-chain ethnic restaurants (especially Asian).

Only medication I take is blood pressure medicine. My doctor's visits have produced good results, but I do tell the doctor I don't go too far into the healthy lifestyle. Yes, I'm sick of fast food, but I refuse to stay away from White Castles when I get the craving, and I'm not going to simply eat salads unless something drastic with my health requires it (even then, I may decide to cheat, because life is short anyways). However, I do make myself conscious of the choices I make. One of the foods that always gives me good blood pressure reading is eating seafood, even when it's fried. Works for me, because I *love* seafood!

I believe moderation is the key. Unless your health requires it, start by looking at the choices you make now, and find areas to adjust. For exercise, start parking at the far end of the parking lot to force yourself to walk further. If you eat out daily, start with one day a week where you pack your own lunch (I'm assuming you're not in school here). If there are eating places near the place you work, walk to them instead of driving. Look for parks in your area, and see if they have any walking trails. If you have a family, see if you can get them interested in joining you.

While I enjoy doing physical exercise type activities, I really believe that the calorie intake is much more important than the burn. In other words, if I eat 3,000 calories, and then go burn 300 calories exercising for half an hour, did it really do me any good? No, because the intake far outweighed the amount I burned.

David's suggestion about sodas is right on for me. Number one rule: don't drink your calories. I drink water almost exclusively.

One thing I did learn is that it isn't the calories, or the carbs, it's the fat. Fat makes you fat. You don't need to cut your calories or your carbs, cut your fat.

I only do it about once a week anymore (lazy me) but I like to ride the exercise bike in front of the TV. Good way to watch the things my wife doesn't want to watch with me anyway like The Walking Dead or Breaking Bad or Monday Night Football.

Depends on the types of fat. Saturated fat and trans fats, sure. But most Americans don't get enough good fats in our diets - the types found in nuts, fish, legumes, avocado, etc.
When I decided a while back that I needed to start eating better and get my cholesterol down (I've since lost 20 lbs) I knew that I wouldn't get anything done if I focused on what I couldn't eat, so instead I focused on eating more of the stuff that's good for me to eat - green tea, spinach, other green vegetables, whole grains, and slowly replaced much of my diet with these things (resulting in about the same amount of eating, but less consumption of things like white breads, meats, cheese, etc.). I still have a major weakness for sugar, though. :reapershrug:

Bats, you are describing me exactly! I have been gradually eating less meats, breads and cheeses as well. I've been eating more spinach and other greens, fruit, grains and legumes. We also started having Green Smoothies (http://www.greensmoothiegirl.com/)on a daily basis. They are actually quite good, and it's an easy way to bump my fruit and spinach intake way up.

Oh yeah, and I completely agree about the right kinds of fats and the sugar addiction...mmm...Halloween.

My main thing is martial arts! Super enjoyable, but it's hard to get started without finding a school to learn from.
Eating better is great! I rarely ever drink a soda, and feel a ton better than I used to. Getting water at restaurants is healthy, and saves a ton of money because sodas are so overpriced. :p But I didn't used to be overweight, I was just unhealthy and skinny, so take my suggestions how you will!

See, I love fruit (definitely an apple a day kind of guy), but I have a HUGE weakness for grains and I can't call myself a big vegetable fan. I mean, I'll have some corn of green beans with dinner, but given the choice I'd rather just take a slice of buttered bread or four and chow down.

Of course, soda's another Achilles' Heel. I used to drink a can a day - I've got it down to two or three a week, but it's always present.

Oh, another big help for me was Wii Fit. Not to exercise, but to chart your weight over time. When you've gained two or three pounds over the last day, you tend to decide against a slice of cake... just by being aware of how much I weigh on a daily basis, I've thinned out a lot over the past three years. I mean, it's slow and steady, but I'm down under 170 now from nearly 200 when I started three years ago.

IAmBatman
October 30th, 2011, 11:30 PM
My advice would be to make sure all the bread/grains you eat are whole grain. You'll still get to eat grains, but they'll fill you up faster and be better for you.

Try working out on an elliptical, it's a lot easier on the knees and you can get your arms and chest worked out too. I used to run a lot when I was younger but after many years of that and working construction, my knees are kind of shot. So I like to get out and ride my mountain bike in the good weather and work out on the elliptical in bad weather. Both are knee friendly, although I kind of over did it on the bike this summer and did some crazy long rides and got runner's knee (of all things) to sideline me for a bit. Lots of good suggestions here. I'm a big guy, always have been (6'4", currently 270 lbs.). I whipped myself down to 225 a couple of years ago, ran a couple of half marathons, etc., but lately it's just been piling back on. It's so hard to run once you get heavier.
I am in the same boat. I am 6'4" and 270 lbs. I use to compete in fighting/kick boxing/MMA/Grappling/etc before I got married, and my fighting weight was 220. A couple of years ago, I got down to 220 again, but I didn't maintain a healthy diet. I am pretty active though, I just have horrible eating habits, like Pizza past midnight.

I always think I'd love to try MMA... just from a workout perspective, not really interested in competitive fighting (it hurts!). Seems like a fun way to stay in shape.

Don't blame pizza! I'm 5'7" and somewhere around 155 and I eat pizza all the time! :)

Often beverages are a major source of calories. There was a period back in high school where I had a mini-fridge set up in my bedroom, which I kept stocked with Mountain Dew and chocolate milk. I went from 140 lbs to 180 lbs in 3 months.

Now I pretty much just drink water. Some (real) juice sometimes.

I also don't eat sugar, which I recommend everyone tries for like a week, even if just so you can really see how much sugar you're eating - it's in everything! (Though to really do this you first need to learn all the ways its labeled)

...I just hate to hear pizza take the blame. I love pizza! ;)

Pizza is loaded with carbs, calories, fat, and sugar.... It is definitely the problem. Now some pizza here or there is fine, especially when balanced with a regular/proper diet, but when you eat as much as I do and as often, it is definitely a problem.

It's amazing. They managed to fit in a fairly large amount of characters and yet give all of them an amount of time they deserve. The Catwoman segments do tend to drag a bit, but the rest is simply fantastic. Especially the boss battles. :) If you played Arkham Asylum, then simply think of Arkham City as the same, but far bigger and better than the already great game that came before it.

That must be what it was then. I think Dark Knight has better thematics and action, but it needed that little extra umph that Cap received with the heart that it has. I think Dark Knight leaves the audience too detached to be considered the top anymore.

I actually didn't like Cap very much. It felt to me that instead of focusing on making a good superhero or war movie, they split down the middle and made a mediocre superhero/war movie. Yeah, I wish they'd make a Superman movie with as much heart as Cap's movie had. Cap's movie is a great example of how a feel good boyscout character actually can make for a great movie if done correctly.
Superman's problem is that he's never really been the underdog you want to root for (except, maybe, romantically with Lois).

I loved the first Iron Man movie other than the final battle. Honestly, the only really great superhero battle scenes I've seen in Iron Man movies thus far were when Tony escaped his kidnappers in Iron Man I, and when he battled Whiplash on the racetrack in Iron Man II. I felt like the final battles in both movies were more flash than substance (though not even that much flash in Iron Man I's final battle). I'd take the battles in Batman Begins, Spider-Man II (not I - the Green Goblin battle had the same problem Iron Man I did, IMO), Captain America, Thor, and The Dark Knight over those in the Iron Men movies.

Superman's problem is that he's never really been the underdog you want to root for (except, maybe, romantically with Lois).

This is coming from the perspective of someone who isn't immersed in comics and has only seen the first two films with Christopher Reeves (which I enjoyed)...

I have to say that I partially have this view of Superman, as I admit that I do hope to see him taken down due to the fact that he seems invincible. But once he does get exposed to Kryptonite and is weakened, my heart really goes out to the guy. I had the same reaction when Griffin posted the comic image when Metallo went to playtest. Seeing Superman down on the ground with a sneering Metallo looking down on him really made my heart ache for Superman.

I guess my reaction is based on the fact that Superman is basically the essence of decency, and I hate to see decency assaulted by cruelty. And I turn on the news and see how cold and cruel the world can be. In the end, I'll take the side of Superman. There are plenty of real-life "Supermen" (and women) in the world, so there is hope for humanity after all. :D

Griffin

Superman represents all of our "best". He is best at power, morality, action, thought, intention, survival, etc. He is best at all. For me, Superman is most interesting when he is being manipulated by the one being who has just one thing better than him; Lex Luthor's ability or inability to see any good in the world. Superman cannot look on this master mind of evil and see only bad, and Lex cannot look on this god-like boyscout and see anything but bad. It has been said that heroes are only as good as their enemies, and the relationship between Lex and Kal is the most dynamic in terms of Villain VS Hero, and that relationship, when it is captured correctly, is when I appreciate Superman the most. "our best/strong/good VS our worst/weak/evil"

I suppose my problem with Superman is he is too extreme. He is either all one way or the other, he doesn't really possess any middle ground. He just doesn't seem very relatable, which is what I like in my Super Heroes. Sure, the way he acts and behaves is relatable, but that's where it ends. It's entirely unrealistic to have nigh unto no weaknesses. The whole point of being a hero, IMO, is to overcome your weaknesses making them strengths.

Superman does have other weaknesses though... mostly in personality. He simply won't do the wrong thing... ever. Often this leads to suffering on his part. I actually find Superman to be one of the more interesting characters, when written correctly. (Something that doesn't happen enough.)

And I turn on the news and see how cold and cruel the world can be. In the end, I'll take the side of Superman. There are plenty of real-life "Supermen" (and women) in the world, so there is hope for humanity after all. :D
Hmmm.... I think the god-like omnipotence of Superman is comparable to Christ though, and Christ (whether you are a believer or not) is a cultural icon of how we view our heroes, or rather how we wish others viewed us: selfless and unparalleled. Pretty much all "American Superheroes" are selfless, and Superman is the extreme of that, sure, but all superheroes are an extremity of a quality or qualities that we admire.

Yeah, but Superman isn't a human - he's alien scum. :-P (insert evil Lex Luthor laugh here). Cap nails that whole "best of humanity" theme. Superman's a strange visitor helping out and trying to fit in, not quite a human and not quite a God (which is why you get all the Christ imagery, though Christ was and is fully both).

That's a very interesting point. I don't know though, Christ doesn't exactly strike me so much as Superman, as a Hybrid between Superman and Captain America. He had America's discretion, and both of their resolves, with Superman's might, but that does put Superman in a new light for me. I was always kind of eh about him before, and now, I'm going to look at him differently the next time I see him in action.

I think my problem with a lot of the heroes is that I tend to emerse myself inside of them as I have an overactive imagination. I feel what they feel, or as I imagine it anyways, and I've just had a lot harder time doing that with a lot of DC heroes.

I think DC's done a lot better job over the years of keeping Batman's tragic past a big part of his story (and then reupping things with a second tragedy in the death of Jason Todd). He really seems like a character driven by a painful past. Superman's past is arguably more painful (his entire planet and just about all of his species wiped out) but that pain doesn't seem to translate into his character as much - he's an eternal optimist it seems and almost too happy and good for a guy who's entire homeworld is gone. Sure, there are the moments of sadness about it here and there, but it doesn't seem to drive his character the way it does with Batman, which I think ultimately makes him a little less relatable at times (sure, he has a token moment of sadness here or there, but he seems to "get over it" a little too easily in the moment sometimes, which is hard to relate to.)
At least he's not all emo, though. :-P

He is human, but not in a relatable way the way Cap is. Cap started out weak and then used his human spirit to make something great out of himself (totally the "story of America" there). Superman was orphaned and alone (very Ellis Island so far) but taken in by super nice parents (a little less how the immigrant story works in America) and then floated by a bit on his natural abilities that weren't really earned and that no human can really relate to (though we can envy them).
In fact, I think one of Superman's most interesting aspects is his trying to be human without really feeling human since he kind of is and kind of isn't. Interesting in an adoptee narrative/unsettled identity sense.

From the American Christian perspective, Superman simply represents how we view our savior and how we would like to be ourselves. And his Kansas family upbringing kinda shows that at least one point in time, us Americans viewed Christ as one who shared our values. Superman is kind of a "let's create GOD in our image" situation. So where Batman represents our Humanity to its fullest (light and dark), Superman is a being designed to show how we view our potential.

Very interesting discussion, and I like Karat's point about Superman's universe being more idealistic versus a more pragmatic view represented in Batman, for example. That also makes me realize that I do have a bit of a split personality in my response to both worlds.

With Superman, I initially root against Superman due to his invincibility. Then he gets weakened and I say, "I take it all back! I'm sorry! Get up, Superman!" and feel guilty for rooting against him.

But I also loved The Dark Knight and was completely glued to the screen whenever Heath Ledger's Joker was on screen. In this case, I'm drawn towards the evil. When Batman enters and cleans up -- and not always in the most pure and innocent manner, mind you -- I guess there's a thrill.

Interesting contrast, and something for any future psychiatrist who has the unfortunate luck of having me for a patient to figure out. :p

For sure, but our "potential" isn't really relatable, so much as a reminder of why we ourselves aren't good enough ... :-P Then build in some super powers that we just can't emulate to make it feel really unfair, and it's hard not to sympathize with Lex Luthor at times.
I just love a good "underdog" story, which is why I dug the Captain America movie a lot. Superman is saddled with the "overdog" role, which just don't capture my imagination most of the time.

One thing I like about Superman is that he's very static. Batman, for example... well, I love THIS (http://writingiseasier.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/batman-alignment-chart.jpg) picture. You can argue Batman from every angle. Is he a hero, a villain, or somewhere in-between? Does he fight for justice or for vengeance? Is he sane? Is he even good? I think it makes for more interesting STORIES, and more interesting LENSES, but I'm not really sure if it makes for a good character.

Superman can also be interpreted, but there are far more absolutes with him. Superman IS good. Superman IS just. Superman IS honorable. Superman IS heroic. If he stops being any of these things, he stops being Superman.

I think we all like to see ourselves reflected in Superman, regardless of our thoughts of opinions. I mean, when an ardent Christian like Griff here and an atheistic socialist like me can both look to the same character and see an icon of everything that's right in the world, you know there's a certain quality to him that's beyond definition.

Well lets see. You start off with a bunch of polls with 6 units in them (I forget how many polls there are) and everyone submits who they think will be the top two winners of each of those polls, then based on who they have winning, they put who they think will win the next polls and so forth until they have a top two for every poll (once you lose a unit in the first round, your bracket is messed up). Then I would open a poll with the 6 units and keep track of the top two winners of each. Then I would pair the top two of each poll with the top two of the the next poll and have the quarter finals, then pair of the winners of two of those polls all the way until there is one poll with the 4 top units that have made it all the way through.

It takes strategy to win and you really need to have a pulse on the community and what they like to win. It's not all about how fun a unit it, random units can gain a following and go all the way. (The Fortress Door almost won it one year.)

It would eleminate the chance for objects, but I think it might get a tad more interest that way, or perhaps, you could do it both ways.

Maybe not 1-on-1, but what about this (playing off Karat's suggestion):

Have 7 people promise to play 1 battle and produce a battle report.

You need 8 equal-point armies. Let's say 800. Each of the 7 players get to create an army, and the eighth might come from a vote from the rest of the public. Or, you have eight heroes. Each hero could produce an army.

Mix the armies into a single-elimination tournament bracket, which would be seven games (thus, the seven participants). Determine which player will play which matchup randomly.

Participants would then play their specific game in the tournament and post their battle report. A participant's commitment to this project wouldn't be any more than with playtesting. Note that participants wouldn't necessarily get to play a battle with their army draft.

In other words, it would be like the Burt's Beer tournaments I play myself, except you'd have more people pitching in.

On my computer I have a few different characters ranging from level 5-20, but I realized that my computer doesn't have the minimum specs for the game which is why it was having extremely bad play problems in certain areas.

I totally wish I could join in, it sounds like loads of fun, but unfortunately, I neither have a PS3 or internet at home :(

If I don't find someone to play with on PC, then I'll probably uninstall it, since I just keep dying and have no idea what I'm doing. :p

I play on PC I just don't get on & actually play too much & obviously am not that far advanced. :|

One thing that might help that I realised after picking fights with the wrong people, is that up in the top left next to your stats comes your targets stats & it states their level. Don't go picking fights with those that are more then 2 levels above you.

So I have to just beat up on low level people forever? Clicking the right mouse button against those Scarecrow goons got old really fast. :p

In other news, pretty cool Dark Knight Rises stuff! :D

MMOs are amazing! I love things like that, and free roam, especially free roam. Sicne I'm getting a Ps3 for Christmas, I have lots of games I'd like (and obviously won't receive them all).

My brother bought me Guild Wars once, and he said it was the best MMO out there. I played it twice I think, before I was bored to tears. :p

But DCUO has SUPERHEROES! So it HAD to be better. :p

I have Guild Wars & I think all of the expansions. I really enjoyed it. In GW I was part of a very active local guild which made it most enjoyable but then WOW had some special sign-up deals & drew most of my guild away. So then I tried WOW & found myself saying why can't I do... like I can in GW, so I never went back to it. But since my fellow guild members weren't active I found less reason to get on & I haven't finished most expansions & there is at least 1 which I didn't even start.

In short unless you have an addictive personality I would say that it's the people you play with that make the MMO games fun.

I agree that friends are a big part of it. Even if you don't know them IRL, making friends in-game makes it more enjoyable. I have spurts when I play Runescape for a couple of months, and with almost 200 friends it gets enjoyable.

Elder Scrolls is an MMO I really enjoy even though I don't have any of them.

Two poor teenagers in 1913 New York City meet by chance and, more or less on a whim, decide to run off to California. Hiding out in boxcars, stealing bread, living off the streets; that sort of thing. They get split up, meet up again, get on the wrong side of mobsters, almost die of meningitis, so on, so forth. Very much an old-time adventure story.

Just to make this thread all about me, today I received a very exciting package in the mail, containing (among other things) a Supergirl figure, expertly repainted with a white shirt and solid red cape, à la Superman: The Animated Series, which I remember mentioning offhand not too long ago. How, you might ask? Well, from our very own (and very generous) Lord Pyre! Nothing I asked him for, nothing I hinted at, just a very awesome gift from a very awesome Scaper - and friend. :D

So everyone shower him with rep! Drown him!

(Rebased and everything! It's awesome! I'll have to get a picture or something...)

Hey guys, I've been nominated to enter C3V for 2 months and design a couple of units. If you guys could go vote (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=38757) for me to be able to try my hand at some Classic customs for a bit, I'd be very appreciative. I did help start up the group, so I think it'll be an interesting experience to work in a different department and share my :2cents: on what's going on in their sanctum.
