Nothing personal or anything (I hope you know), but we have tried soooo many different ways to work C3G and most of those trials were out of necessity to try and fix a problem we had. As it is right now, I just don't think we have any legitimate problems. As it is, C3G is stronger and more fluid than ever before.

We're talking about toys online.

I think if everyone stepped back now and then and reminded themselves of that, no one would take much of anything on here personally.

At least that's my motto anyway. :D

I got what he was saying. He was talking only about the 2 Public Designs & the Maps. He was suggesting that you could do the playtest for them without excluding yourself from taking a Hero LD design.

Margloth is promoting the opportunity to do a playtest on a Map or Public Design at the same time as signing up for a Hero LD design. Honestly this might help the Public Designs & Maps keep moving, so I wouldn't be opposed to trying it.

Cheers

:word: Sounds like she had a full life and was ready to go. They don't make people of that generation anymore. People of the depression/WWII era were some remarkable people and I take every opportunity to talk with them because they are full of wisdom and some great stories.

We went to my wife's Aunt's funeral yesterday in Chicago and she was 88. Ironically, she had just started physical therapy and was feeling better from it but had a heart attack on Saturday. The toughest part yesterday wasn't sitting for an hour and fifteen minutes in the non-air-conditioned church while the heat index was 110 degrees, it was that my wife's cousin is a Catholic priest and he did the mass/service for his own mother. It was tough seeing him getting so choked up while doing the services at the church, funeral home and cemetery.

The older I get, the more funerals and wakes I attend. It's never easy of course, but it always serves to remind me that life is short and you have to appreciate everyone in your life as much as possible and always let them know how much they mean to you.

I had taken the plunge into trying cardstock terrain before I discovered C3G. Here's a picture showing my efforts:

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p288/davidlhsl/DiceTower/MarvelCity2.jpg

I was plugging along nicely. One day, while putting together one of the cars, I just quit. I guess I was finally overwhelmed by the amount of work this project was requiring.

When I saw and built the Crime Alley map, I found exactly what I was looking for: a respectable urban setting. I was so happy with the way the battle went, I simply crushed and threw the cardstock stuff away. That isn't as drastic as it may sound. The buildings were beginning to warp, and the glue was losing its cohesion in places.

I will say that the cardstock terrain looked impressive when I had it, and it was a lot of fun to play. I still take a peek at World Works Games' website from time to time, but I honestly can't muster the money or the effort now. With the C3G maps, I haven't honestly missed it.

I to was a fan of the WWG stuff, but it took so long & then because it made the maps larger scale I had to move outside & the wind would be blowing them all over the place, even with rocks on the top of them . I think I have the same buildings you have still made. I gave the petrol station to my son to play with & it lasted about a week (& that was made of foam core).

This is why I wanted to design those maps like Crime Alley & Corner High Rise. I don't recall seeing a battle report done on Crime Alley by you yet. Or did you do that as part of it's design process :confused:/

Cheers

I sure did play a battle on it. I even took a picture or two, and you asked what I was using to put an unbased Robin on the ladder. It was a wooden disc.

Also, Spiderman was knocked off the top of one of the buildings and survived Extreme Falling damage with a roll of 20 on the d20!

Edit: First Battle (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showpost.php?p=1195592&postcount=61) / Second Battle (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showpost.php?p=1195730&postcount=68)

They definitely lack the "Burt's Beer" touch of my later battle reports, but this was shortly after I played the Matt Helm/C3G Smackdown story.

Based on the date of the first post in the Token/Proxy thread (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=31535), next Friday will be my one year anniversary in Superhero Scape! I can't nail the exact date precisely, but I started that thread during the time I was testing the C3G waters.

Saw Captain America... first half was great. Not a lot of action in the origin story, but the characterizations were fantastic and you actually had a lot of feeling for the characters, especially Steve Rogers (Chris Evans actually does very well in this role, showing a maturity I haven't seen from him before) and Dr. Erskine (Stanley Tucci is just great). Period feel is spot on as well, and there's even a small, almost cameo from Jim Hammond!

Surprisingly, though, Hugo Weaving's Red Skull and the Nazi bashing were not very compelling, and the fact remains that Steve Rogers is a more compelling character than Captain America. After a great origin, it kind of slips into a B-movie (which is probably what it should be, and was meant to be, so that's not a very harsh criticism).

Overall, probably a B or B-. Check it out, but wait for DVD or the dollar theater.

I just got home from taking the kids to see the Cap movie. We enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed the origins etc, as I just love the WWII era. I agree that Steve Rodgers is more compelling than Cap, but Cap is kind of machine like in his style. He's a tactical fighting machine, so there's less of his "old Steve" showing when he's in Cap mode.

Nothing wrong with it being a B, heck it's a superhero movie, so I'll take a B :D

It did set up something interesting for either a future sequel or for the Avengers movie.

Don't look at the spoiler below if you don't want something spoiled. ;)

They made sure to show Buckey's sniper ability at one point. So to me, that and the one part in the movie, it leaves it open to have him come back as Winter Soldier. :D

Review for the Cap game is in... 5.5 from IGN. :(Were you honestly expecting it to be higher? It is a movie-game. :p I guess I gave up complete hope many years ago.

I just saw Captain America and it was hands down the best Superhero movie of the year so far.

I loved how Hydra Agents lived up to their role as cannon fodder. Overall was pretty funny movie too.

Oh, and if anyone could message me with the scene at the end of the credits I would be very thankful.

Me three, I didn't see him.

Saw the movie Friday night and thought it was pretty awesome. They did a nice job staying with the comics on most fronts, but still making it different. I was a little disappointing in one scene (don't want to ruin it), but overall good movie. And surprisingly funny.

I haven't been to the theater is some time myself. My favorite theater was the one in Opry Mills (Nashville), because it had an IMAX Theater. Sadly, Tennessee (and other surrounding areas) was hit with a flood that completely shut down the mall. Yeah, there are other theaters, but most of them are run down. Nothing is more depressing than seeing a movie in a run-down theater, with the notable exception of eating at McDonalds (shudder).

Just curious, what was the scene you were dissapointed in? IMO, this was THE comic book movie of the Summer, hands down. For sheer geekdom there were some small Easter Eggs, such as Human Torch, The Howling Commandos (who were never named as such, but it was them), Arnim Zola's face first appearing in a TV screen (if you don't know, I'm not explaining it), and then the flying car from Howard Stark. Not to mention the tie-in to Thor and the set-up for a Cap 2.

I'm talking about liking hex compatible building terrain and not liking non-hex compatible building terrain. The warehouse is hex compatible and I like it. I'm not sure from an initial glance if Grish's buildings are or not, so that's what I was trying to figure out here. :-) I play with hexes and hexes alone - I'm not keen on figuring out movement on squares or even having hexes imprinted on the top of squares and randomly cutting off on the edges, if that makes sense.

I just downloaded the pdf's and checked out the booklet (thanks for the link, A3n). The buildings are square, but they seem to be sized in a dimension that would easily fit onto the hex Heroscape terrain.

As for the playable surfaces, the roof is, indeed, composed of hexes. So this terrain is hex-based as far as figure placement and movement are concerned. Think in terms of the warehouse overhang with the 2 hexes on that.

One issue that is presented, and Grishnak addresses it, is that you will have some half-hexes. Grishnak defines two types: open and closed. Basically, closed hexes are the half hexes are at the base of the building, and are considered unplayable Open hexes are the half hexes on the roof. These are playable, but at a penalty to attack/defense.

Edit: And you apparently figured it out before I completed my dissertation. Not sure if I'll bite the bullet myself. My issue is effort required (which doesn't look too imposing other than joining the sides) and the space the terrain will take to store. I may very well revisit the objects for the World Works Games stuff I purchased (barrels, for example) for destructible objects. Some of those were easy to construct.

IAmBatman
July 30th, 2011, 11:30 AM
Hmm ... effort and space are always issues for me as well, which may push such a move to the "back burner" but skyscrapers are always going to be enough on my radar that those are obstacles that will be overcome in time regardless. :-)

I thought that C3G might be interested in a 3-year-old girl's outlook on some of their figures (myself in italics, my baby cousin [who is absolutely fascinated with all the HeroScape items she can fine] otherwise)...

(On the Hulk)
- Who this?
- That's the Hulk!
- He a bad guy?
- No, he's a good guy!
- No, he a bad guy, he gots sharp teeths.

(On Molly Hayes)
- Is a little girl...
- A little girl with duckies.
- I like girls... and duckies...

(On Wonder Woman)
- Oh, it's a BIG girl!

(On Thor)
- What's his name?
- Thor.
- Why?
- Because he controls thunder.
- Why?
- Because he has a magic hammer.
- Oh.

(On Poison Ivy)
- Who this?
- That's Ivy. She likes plants.
- I like plants. Oh no, the thing [vine], eating her finger!
- It's okay, she can talk to plants.
- Why?
- Because... she's magic.

(On Green Goblin)
- What this guy?
- He's the Green Goblin.
- I don't like goblin... *places face down* I don't look at him.

(On Batman)
- *picks up Batman figure*
- Do you know who that is?
- *blank stare*
- That's Batman.

(On Batman Beyond)
- Who's this.
- That's... also Batman.
- Other Batman.

(On Black Canary)
- *gasp of sadness and sympathy for a figure that seems to be crying*
- ...
- *extensive figure-on-figure abuse; Thor beats Black Canary in the face repeatedly with his hammer*
- ...
- *Black Canary tosses Thor to the ground and smashes him until he's knocked out of his flight stand*

I am NOT a fan of Steven Spielberg, I know that is blasphemy to some of you who worship the guy, but I generally do not like the "lessons" or "morality" of his stories. Anyways, I forced myself to watch Cowboys and Aliens last night and it was a pretty good movie.

It is basically a message of "men" putting their differences aside and uniting to overcome a great adversity. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the men had to use some "outside" help to get it done, but that help was basically minimal.

Overall, :star::star::star::halfstar: out of 5.

Happy birthday, Spidey! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58XYUXybBV4)

spoiler (please don't open until after you've clicked the link and seen the video):

The cupcakes certainly look yummy.

However... ok, let's try to break this down. You love Spiderman, right? He's your favorite Superhero, right? So you get tons of cool Spiderman decorations and party favors. Fantastic! So how do you end such a web-slinging and Spidey-tingly celebration? With a pinata where you take a stick and beat the crap out of the poor guy. :wtf:

So I'm kind of pondering making a Newbie thread for C3G, ala the Question Dump, where the fresh meat can come and ask any question they'd like.

I know when I first started, I was shy about getting involved (as opposed to my usual boorish self), because there seemed to be a lot of legalese behind C3G and I was askeered of'a breakin' the rules.

Just kind of a hey, thanks for checkin' us out, you got questions, we got answers kind of thread... a bit more community outreach! Hopefully us Sidekicks and Allies could take a bit of a mentor approach there, and kind of take newbies under our wing.

Mavel, Marvel, Marvel... Why would you do this to my beloved Spider-Man series?

Not only did they have to kill Peter Parker, THE only Spider-Man I will ever read and respect (well, I like Ben Reilly too... But that's a whole different matter), but you had to make some stupid play for publicity and replace him with a half black, half Hispanic guy! I have nothing against minorities, but jeez Louise, this looks like a BLATANT publicity stunt. I hope this explodes in their face and they concentrate on the true, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN!

Margloth

I'm pretty sure Peter Parker has 'died' several other times as well. Honestly, I don't understand why these storylines even really make waves anymore.

Also, I think having another character fill the shoes can sometimes make for some interesting stories. I think Mac Gargan Venom is just as interesting as Eddie Brock Venom. I realize Venom isn't quite on the same plane as Spider-Man, but still...

Swamper
August 4th, 2011, 11:18 AM
But see, Venom is (basically) the same no matter who he's bonded to. There's only ONE Spider-Man. And this new guy will spend all of his time trying to fill Parker's shoes, and he will fail. No one can fill Parker's shoes. I think this is a horrible decision by Marvel.

Margloth
August 4th, 2011, 11:22 AM
I'll admit I haven't been reading much Spidey stuff lately, but in my opinion, Peter Parker feels a little out of place in the current Marvel Universe anyway. The current MU is a dark and somewhat depressing place... Spidey's personality seems to clash with the rest of the world's inhabitants.

I'd be okay with trying something new for a while... and like I said, it's just Ultimate Spidey.

IAmBatman
August 4th, 2011, 01:01 PM
The crappy part is the blatant tokenism of the character choice. He's not an organic character who has race as part of his identity, he's Black with a capital "B" and Hispanic with capital "H." His race is bigger than his actual personality because he's not a character - he's a symbol of their attempts at diversity. Inorganic, token attempts like this, though, just make lack of diversity issues worse. Oh, and God forbid they create a compelling character of color rather than taking an established name and transforming him into a character as color in a cheap publicity stunt. Storm seems like she worked out pretty well ...
This type of stuff from the big two of comics is why the only comics I'm picking up right now are Image ...

MARVEL and DC have basically run out of good ideas, and they have entrenched management that essentially needs to retire or just die. I would love to see young American writers take over the industry again.

Main stream comics DC, Marvel only want your money. Stories, characters are secondary. That's why every summer someone big dies then in the winter they brought back. Maybe my time frame is off but you get my point. Superman, Spiderman was "born" before most of us were alive and will be here after we die. They just to big a cash cow to ever change or let die.

The funny thing to me about changing the race of Spider-Man is how little impact it will have on minorities. They don't care about the color of the person beneath the mask. It is only going to alienate whites.

I work as a children entertainer painting faces and making balloons. Almost all of the minority or ethnic children LOVE Spider-Man, especially the Muslims and Indians. I have always speculated that this is the case because Spider-Man can be any color or ethnicity under that mask - it is up to the imagination. However, Batman and Superman are blatantly white, and ethnic groups from other parts of the world are not typically as diverse minded as we are, and wouldn't want to "worship" a white or a black as a hero.

However, Batman and Superman are blatantly white, and ethnic groups from other parts of the world are not typically as diverse minded as we are, and wouldn't want to "worship" a white or a black as a hero.

Interestingly enough, I read an interview with one of the writers behind the new changes (I think so, at least) and he said the exact same thing - as a kid, he and all of his friends (he is black I believe) loved being Spider-Man, because under the mask he could be anyone.

Honestly, though? A new Spider-Man? It's interesting. Yeah, they're uprooting a time-honored character and replacing him with a minority for no real reason. But what about John Stewart as Green Lantern? Same thing. Stewart is BADASS. Ryan Choi as the Atom is MUCH cooler than Ray Palmer if you ask me. And it's not the first time they swapped Spideys, either... Ben Reilly anyone?

Let's see where they go with the kid before throwing around "ruined Spider-Man FOREVER!" and "blatant race-mongering!" and all that. Maybe they'll be able to tell some solid stories about a kid trying to live up the legacy of the man before him. Or maybe it'll be sheer crap. But I think we should actually READ the stories before we decide it's all a publicity stunt.

I dunno, killing Peter and replacing him with a black kid in an offshoot universe ain't much compared to, say... having him hatch from a giant cocoon while his real body is eaten by spiders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man:_The_Other) or make a deal with Satan to save Aunt May and erase his marriage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man:_One_More_Day). I think Ultimate Spidey got off easy!

August 4th, 2011, 03:07 PM
Yeah, the New Day storyline was strange, to say the least. Spidey was getting bogged down with his identity being revealed and all that though, so I can see why the writers did that.

I'm curious how Peter got off easier in te ultimate universe, being dead and all.

Margloth

This just in: More Hollywood racial tinkering as it pertains to DC's Perry WHITE in the upcoming film Man of Steel.

The actor chosen to play the role of the Daily Planet's Chief Editor is none other than African American Laurence Fishburn; best known for his role in the Matrix trilogy.

Laurence Fishburn is without a doubt an amazing actor with loads of talent and experience. He is a well known actor and has become a common household name. My question is, will his talents as an amazing actor 1 - be enough for Superman fans to overlook the color of his skin, and 2 - will he be able to play the character of Perry White in a way that is true to the character? Perry White is a well-to-do man with a passion for good reporting. He is known for his occassional outbursts (less than J. Jonah Jameson) and his famous line "Don't call me chief!". Will Laurence Fishburn come out of his comfort zone of his typical "calm and collective" role, or will he rewrite Perry White to fit his own personality and acting style?

Is anyone else bothered by the fact that Lex Luthor isn't casted yet for the Man of Steel movie? I am starting to wonder if they are even planning on casting him at all.... Has anyone heard any rumors or confirmations on whether or not he will be in the movie? I read about a year ago that Nolin and Goyer's idea that was pitched to WB had Lex as a side character/villain, but that was really just a rumor.

johnny139
August 7th, 2011, 12:58 AM
It seems pretty likely to me that Luthor won't be in Man of Steel - or, at least, not in any major role. I figure, if anything, he'll have a minor cameo or appear in a hook at the end - not unlike the Joker in Batman Begins.

Griffin
August 7th, 2011, 01:12 AM
I think you are right, or at least I hope you are about him having a small role or at least a "sequel hook". I just want to see him reimagined and done correctly. You know, it would be cool if he had a sort of sub plot as he rose to the presidency.

Margloth
August 7th, 2011, 07:43 AM
I actually think Fishburne will make an awesome Perry White. While he's most famously known for the Matrix and Law & Order or something like that, the vast majority of his work actually has a bit of a 'crazy' vibe to it.

I'd like to see a more sympathetic spin on Luthor. Maybe show him as not a villain in this movie (at least not directly)... maybe teamed with Superman, out of necessity.

Griffin
August 7th, 2011, 09:08 AM
Luthor, at his core HAS to "outdo" Superman and win the approval and love of the world and steal that from Superman. But because the world rejects him and his methods as villainous, while worshiping the alien Kryptonian, he turns all of his jealousness, hatred, obsession, and attention to destroying the Man of Steel and/or destroying his image in the public - THAT is how Lex HAS to be portrayed to really get him as he should be done. The 90's comics really nailed this (especially when he was cloned) and Smallville perfected it IMO.

johnny139
August 7th, 2011, 10:15 AM
I've always found the varied interpretations of Luthor's motives interesting. Is he just naturally untrustworthy - does he really think of Superman as the villain, an alien invader? The "Lex Luthor: Man of Steel" comics does this great; he has some awesome lines, thinks of himself as "the last true humanist." He thinks the ends justify the means.

Or is he petty and jealous? Does he just want to BE Superman? Does he want the power, the attention, the love and adoration? Is it simply revenge for meddling in his business (and making his hair fall out)? Anger that someone dares to challenge him? A base cynicism that the "raw good" of Superman must fail; to prove that his method of lying, cheating, and stealing is the only true path to success?

There's so many ways to go with it, his psychology is so variable, that it's tough to nail him down.

(I'd definitely love to see a Superman trilogy with a President Luthor side-story weaved in... and cap things off with a global invasion by Darkseid or Brainiac while he's in office, and have a scene where he realizes the country and the world's only hope is Superman!)

Griffin
August 7th, 2011, 10:20 AM
I think a Brainiac/Luthor hybrid would be very cool for a second film, and cap the trilogy (the Hollywood trend) off with Darkseid as the finale. Oh yeah, and a Green Lantern/Superman team up film against Mongul and War World would be AWESOME.

Swamper
August 7th, 2011, 01:23 PM

Griffin

As a voice, yes. But I will always think of Lex when I see that face, so he can never play another live-action comic book role, IMO. I agree about his Lex, he was brilliant! Even in the finale, after a two-three year hiatus, he never skipped a beat! For the first time I felt I understood and could relate to Lex, in Smallville. Which, IMO, was what was really brilliant about the show.

Griffin

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if this were a 'first appearance', as it were. Costume might not be complete just yet.

Catwoman is gonna have to have some backstory development... I wouldn't be surprised (especially since she's on the Batbike) if she doesn't end up getting a lot of her stuff from Bruce. So maybe she just hasn't got a mask yet.

But I have to say, the whole Anne Hathaway/Catwoman angle is the thing I'm most worried about in this movie.
