View Full Version : Telling figures apart?

I was browsing through some DnD mini galleries checking out what kind of stuff we might be seeing in the future, and the Drow kept catching my eye. I really like the Drow as a new HeroScape race, and would love to see them flushed out to the point of being a significan theme. However, I also noticed that one drow pretty much looks like another. Does anyone think there may be limitations on what the designers can do with the Drow because so many of them are so similar?
Or this could apply to any race. I know some friends of mine don't play very often and sometimes have trouble distinguishing the Dwarven Heroes from the squad figures and same thing with Vikings.

People complain about Brave Arrow or Crixis looking too much like the Squads they work with. Actually this is part of some figures advanage.
Consider the Steamroller moving across the board, you might target a squady thinking it was crixis and by the time the dice are rolled not notice. Sure it might be "Jerky" to hold someone to the attack, but it is equivelent to forgetting about viper hiding in the Jungle.
This is a 3D mini game and as such sould benifit from things like similarity to confuse your opponats.

HUH???? Is it really a problem? The Orcs all look alike but you can tell an Arrow Grut from a Heavy.

I've lost sight of Migol at times amongst his Dwarf brethren.

Well put Wriggz.
The only time that sort of thing happen was with my 9 year old brother. He shot a Capuan Guard, killed him, smiled and said "I killed Crixus".
Me: "That's not Crixus" :?
My bro:  It's not?
Crixus was too far so there was no point for him to take his move back.
I am sure more experienced players have no trouble in distinguishing figures. I guess a brain fart could happen

Anyway, I am sure the designer's will throw in any drow they want into Heroscape. I just hope we get some bonding with the drow.

When I was a younger player, I always mixed up the marro warriors and Ne-Gok-Sa.

I still mix them up. I think I need glasses.

NGS and the Marro Warriors?? :wtf: Other than basic Marro-ishnes of them, they are not similar at all.

Right, but I think Orcs are easier than some of the others. There are the ones with no armor and stone-looking swords, ones with bows, and armored ones with polearms.
The dwarves, gladiators, and vikings all are similarly equipped and resemble one another to a great extent. I'm not saying I have problems with it, but others do.
I was looking at some other drow sculpts from the DnD minis, and there are several more that are just Drow with swords and shields like the ones we have. I was trying to decide if those sculpts could become HeroScape pieces in the future or not.

The worst one in my opinion is Atlaga and the Protectors of Ullar.
I can never tell the sculpts apart unless I pick them up and scrutinize them.

Atlaga has a shirt; the PoU are shirtless with chest harnesses.

;) I've now put white stickers on the tops of their bases of a few characters with their initials to tell them from their squads, such as Brave Arrow aka "BA."

The only time I played against a 'tron army, it took me a while to get used to telling them apart. The differences are obvious if you focus on a given figure, but when you pass your gaze over the battlefield they are pretty much the same.

The Protectors cut down heroes, they wear high heels, suspenders, and a bra!

I put stickers on the Warriors of Ashra in order to tell them apart from the Sentinels of Jandar.
Come on, is this really a problem? Seems like if you're a member of the fansite and you get to play the game once in a while, you ought to have more than enough exposure to images and descriptions of these figures to not forget which one is which.
Yeah, Crixus looks a lot like the Capuan, but he looks slightly more like Crixus. That's how I tell them apart.

I think they're the hardest. Not much of a problem anywhere else, except Arrow Gurts with Blade Gruts.

Uhh...Check what weapon they're using. Or, be like me and have your opponent draft both but only use blade gruts. Then, you can tell that the ones still in the start zone are the arrow gruts.

They dress in women's clothing and hang around in bars!!!
Oh they're the Protectors and they're O.K.!
They sleep all night and they work all day!

;) That's it--the high heels explain why Atlaga is so unsteady on his feet!

Lol one of my friends brought a krav maga squad over once but one of the guys was Agent Carr. He was in a hurry collecting his army so it was an honest mistake. There have been times when M.D.G. was lost amongst his legionaires.... although his cloak does stick out when looking at the back. For me characters usually stick out but I can see how people might get mixed up. On the same note though wouldn't it make sense that characters that were of the same race looked similar?
