So, on the site, there are many people that talk about advertising, how to expand the game, etc. I was wondering, how did most of you guys/girls get into heroscape? Did you see it on the shelves? Did you see a commercial? Or did someone tell you about it?
I am keeping a tally.
As for me, one point to seeing it on the shelves walking randomly through Target.
Edit(s)- So, to improve this thread, ive taken lefton4ya's idea's (props to him) and my idea and combined them. He suggested that we compile all the 1 line reasons why a person might have gotten into playing heroscape. I will keep a tally and add reasons as they come out.
The idea's are as follows
D&D player and saw D&D Heroscape set coming out- 2
Into comic figures, saw Heroscape Marvel- 39
Avid gamer and saw heroscape somewhere not in stores (GenCon for example)- 2
Saw Heroscape at a store, Big box- 27
Saw Heroscape at a hobby shop-7
Saw Heroscape on line- 5
Saw Heroscape commercial on TV or internet and thought really cool.- 19
Played or just saw at a friend's house and thought really cool.- 31
Got as a surprise gift/ giving a gift- 14
Business endeavor (i.e started selling it, or something along those lines)-0
Pssh I have no idea-1
Reviews somewhere- 4
I took my tally from this link, lefton4ya's links and R˙chean's link. :)
As of post 52.

My answer from Aug 2006 in the So, what got YOU involved?! (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=1876) thread.
In November 2004, my nephew saw the commercial on TV and asked for it for his birthday.
Once my son saw the game in person, he asked for it for Christmas that same year. I got him a master set.
I watched my brother play with his son, I watched my kid play with them. Every time they tried to get me to game I distanced, saying "I don't want to get into that, it will consume me" and "that looks to cool to play just a little bit"
My son only played with his cousin and my brother for the first 8 months of us knowing about it. He never cracked open his own master set. It sat in his room for 7 months. I told him to bring it with him for summer visit and we would play.(his mom and I are divorced)
July 2005 I played my first game of Heroscape. It was just as I feared; It consumed me. My son left the master set with me saying he would never get to play it with his mom. By the time he returned for a weekend visit, I had expansions, road, large heroes and another master set. By November 2005 I was completely caught up on all releases with 3 of all commons and multiple terrain expansions and one of each unique.
I couldn't get enough, I latched on with the guys here in Dallas hosting a Heroscape event at my apartment complex in December 2005; I am still hooked to this day; I play 4-5 times a week; every week and I have played countless hundreds of games and yet have never tired of playing.
I have met guys that have become very good friends to me; I have reconnected with some of my greatest friends through this game. It has become more than a game to me. It is a vehicle by which to connect with so many people; people that are very dear to me, people that have become dear to me, and I am meeting new people all the time.

The first NHSD 2007 I think I went to was a team event this was before I owned any thing scape. I borrow an army from the guru and fattest ninja and suckered mombo in to being my team mate (sure you can play the giant and the green dragon and I'll play a mess of zombies) we came in dead last (oh so you have to put order markers on th Ae after they drop to take a turn with them) but we had a blast. ninja was kind enough to give us his prize, a swarm set. And thats when the scape bug bit me I bought out all of the zombies the store had
about a year later I hooked Darkmage7a (yeah man I got all these units you won't have to buy any to play) and the rest is history.

I used to see it here and there and thought it was a cool looking game, but way too expensive for me (at the time.. what the heck? Monopoly doesn't even cost that much!) This was way before I even knew about the slew of awesome international games out there so my value for board games was always around 10 bucks.
Whenever I go to the malls or whatnot and there is a GamesWorkshop store nearby, I would like to go in and check out the miniatures. It seemed like such a cool game and theme. I love medieval/fantasy themes.
But all of the little things like measuring with a ruler and expensiveness of the miniatures turned me off.
Then I saw Tom Vasel's review and understood exactly what HeroScape was and I was completely interested. I felt like HS was a Games Workshop type of game except it kept all the fun parts and removed all the technical annoying stuff I didn't like and it was much cheaper.. and pre-painted!
I just had to find out more and here I am.

My good buddy, Tom+, who is on this site as well, got me hooked. I have multiples of each master set, land expansion, and Wave pack. I usually sell extra stuff on ebay so I can buy new Heroscape Waves and pay for GenCon. It is an endless, evil cycle, but I love it!

My uncle gave me the first master set for Christmas (I think it was in 05). I played it and liked it. I've played it fairly often since then, buying more expansions every once and a while.

I'm going to follow Rychean's lead and re-post my "how I got into the game" account from elsewhere (although mine doesn't have nearly as eloquent an ending as his):
I actually saw the Heroscape TV commercials a bunch of times before picking up the game. They had a line like "use your holiday gift card to buy this, kids!" - which made me wish I was a kid with a holiday gift card. My first reaction upon seeing those commercials was that the terrain and figures were beautiful, but man, it must cost a fortune to get all that cool stuff they show you.
I also had some reservations about the game play - I can't remember who said it, but I think it was on one of the 'Scapetalk podcasts - but I thought, are the rules going to be any good? Great looking stuff, but the game mechanics could be terrible.
I later found out someone I knew had the game and thought "cool, I'll finally get to play it!" I did, and I was hooked. RotV came with so much stuff for $40 CDN - my fears about having to spend a fortune to get a decent amount of terrain and figures were disproved (though I have since spent a fortune growing that collection ;)). . . as well, the game play was far richer than I expected from a Hasbro release.

From Which Heroscape set did you buy first? and Players who got hooked through Marvelscape
My Heroscory [sic]:
Was at a retreat around 2004 and someone said a few people were playing a nerdy game. Checked it out, though it was cool and nerdy at same time, but did not play since I never played RPG or strategy game other than Risk or Stratego because I didn't want to be associated as a "Gamer". Anyway, did not even remember the name of the game till later and decided not for me.
Late 2005, roomate got job at ToysRUs and bought Master Set 1 on company discount. I played it and liked it, and actually got real into building maps for it, but still did not want to buy own set for fear of being "Gamer"
He mentioned Marvel Version was coming out, so I thought "That can't be too nerdy to play with Superhroes" (I know it defies logic) and bought Marvel Set. I wanted more land, so also bought Lava set at same time. Soon bought an oversized Batman and Superman action figure on clearance and made hand made cards of Bat & Supand was a custom Hero junkie from then on.
Later I bought Marro set for land and figures as more of friends played with official characters. I also buy HeroClix figures and design my own Marvel customs, however its harder to find anyone I know willing to play comic heroes as many friends all buy the expansions and feel comic heroes are too powerful. Now am hooked on playing non-comic 'scape, buy expansions, and visit this site a lot.
So I guess I started playing official set, "got hooked" through Marvelsacepe, and am now hooked on normal Heroscape. Put me in the YES list.

Saw it at a toystore when it first came out, I was like in 4th grade or so. I bought it and played with my friend for a while, but we got bored.
Then when my Xbox broke last spring break, my other friend and I pulled it out of my closet on a whim. Been playing ever since.

But seriously my brother got it for Christmas one year, we started playing it, and I fell in love with the game. Been buying up expansions ever since.

I was trying to find a game that would have a forum where people would start new threads on the same topics over and over again and then make polls about the same thing over and over again and then people would point out that the topic had been discussed and lead people to that thread but they would still keep talking in the new thread and people would re-answer the question again in each and every new occurrence of the same thread.....and that's what lead me to Heroscape.

A buddy of mine had recently finished up his tour as an electronics tech in the navy, and he had moved home from that crazy stretch of future seabed known as California, bringing his family with him (of course!).
One afternoon, shortly before the regular game night crew was due to show up, he arrived with RotV under his arm. The box art was eye-catching, so I asked him, "Hey - watcha got there?" He explained that he'd been out shopping for games to play with the wife and kids, and had taken advantage of a Toys'r'Us buy-one-get-one offer on board games. So, we cracked it open, built a map, and an obsession was begun!
We had missed Mallidon's Prophecy, but we were just in time to grab up Utgar's Rage and Orm's Return. The great game-design was just too enjoyable to not continue collecting, and, 5+ years later, the collection is still growing. We've even kept up with grabbing two of every unique just so more than one person can wield the might of Krug!
So, how did I get into 'scape? Good friends and a commitment to keep gaming together!

If he had found the old thread, as a noob, he probably would have necro'd it and got riddled for that, so catch 22.
Anyway, I was watching Inyuyasha with my son(his first and fav anime, use to fall asleep watching it with me at 10 months old :) ), and saw the commercial and decided I had to have it. Bought it as soon as Wallyworld got the stock. Moved a couple of months later and got an old friend to play it mid 2005. Been hooked since. Multiples of all and only missing Skahen and Woo.

So no Catch 22 at all.

See apparently you have me confused with someone else...I am as amazed at all of the newbs that have 2 or 3 posts and a red box. 1 out of 100 really deserved it and maybe not even that many. If you do something "wrong" and someone corrects you and you keep doing it then you will probably get neg repped. If you are defiant against someone who corrects you or points you in the right direction then you deserve it.

Maybe it's Clark Johnson. I got mistaken for Clark Johnson once when I was in Baltimore at the Waterfront Hotel Bar. That was back when they filmed Homicide there. I don't look anything like him, though.

In fairness to the Chilling Touch, he said in his first post that he wants to start a tally.
Me unearthing the first manifestation of this topic was not so he could be dinged for starting a redundant thread, but rather so could reference the older thread to add those responses to his tally.
(I did not ding him; I simply linked the first thread and reposted my response.)

I did a quick search and did not see a relevant thread poll , but because I can't really search for any word in "why did you get Herosacpe" maybe there is a thread/poll that came out recently that I did not know about. The Tom Vasel recommendation and D&D set have only been out a few months so I can see value creating a new thread/poll.
Before someone creates a NEW pols, let's try to figure out all the reasons that someone would get into heroscape. This should not duplicate my poll on Which Heroscape set did you buy first? but rather focus on what cought your attention to the game enough to buy it or encourage parents or friends to? Also who you are buying for (yourself, spouse, child, friend) or who bought it for you should not be separate list items but rather what got you interested in it in the first place.
Some starting suggestions, please add more suggestions and help clean up my wording:
D&D player and saw D&D Heroscape set coming out
Into comic figures, Heroclix and/and other Superhero CMG and saw Heroscape Marvel
Tom Vasel got me into Heroscape
Avid gamer (besides D&D/Heroclix) and saw Heroscape at FLGS, convention, or gaming site (other than The Dice Tower)
Casual gamer and saw Heroscape at big box store when looking for games for self or family and thought really cool.
Casual gamer and saw Heroscape at big box store on sale and thought really cheap and could be good.
Saw Heroscape commercial on TV or intranet and thought really cool.
Played or just saw at a friend's house and thought really cool.
Got as a surprise gift.
Edit: Oh and one more that probably will get a lot of votes: "I don't remember!"

Here's my story from the same thread. Fun to read again simply because I first wrote it about 3 months after picking up my first masterset:
In the Fall of '04 I had just graduated college and was looking for my first real job. Spent a lot of time bumming around at home with friends watching CartoonNetwork and playing games. Saw the ads for Heroscape, but didn't give it much thought. Honestly the game looked geared towards children and I figured it wouldn't have any appeal for me.
Fast forward to June '06. I'd spent the last 18 months working in Madison, WI, but I was quitting my job for a new job closer to my new fiance. I gave myself a month or so of nothing in order to relax and enjoy Madtown before I had to move away. One of my best friends in the area had quit around Christmas time, but was still bumming around town unemployed. Since we both had nothing to do for a month, he decided we needed to get some sort of tactical boardgame, RPG, etc to play.
I've been a big gamer all my life, but mostly videogames. My earlier attempts at tabletop gaming have been rather disasterous. I'd tried Battletech and Warhammer at various times, but I hated painting the figures and never really understood how to go about expanding the game. In particular, attempts to get into the game before the internet explosion were pretty futile at best. D&D style games had met with similar failure. If anyone is familiar with the "Rat-Flail of Ultimate PWNage", that's what usually happens when I play D&D.
So it was with much hesitation that I agreed to find a new tabletop game to try playing for the next month. Luckily, our search wasn't very successful. Since we started just an hour before Pegesus closed, we didn't have a lot of time to check specialty stores. We searched a bit, but passed over a lot of things because we knew anyting that required a lot of setup or learning wouldn't get much playtime that evening, and low attention spans could put off our game night indefinitely.
Nearly giving up, I threw out the only real name I knew anything about: Heroscape. It looked made for kids, so I figured it would be, if nothing else, cheap, quick to set up, and easy to learn. Running to Target, we grabbed the Masterset and the Heroes of Barrenspar, as I felt any game without a Knight and Troll would be lacking something.
Getting it home, we set up our first map out of the rulebook and played a game. Krug took out Raelin due to the Summoning Glyph, but my Samurai managed to lock down his Deathstalkers nicely. I wasted the AE early, thinking the Drop > Grenades would do a number on his initally tightly packed group (note, 2 attack against Deathstalkers probably won't kill them...). Denrick and Krug fought an epic battle, with Denrick as the victor, but I was sunk by then. I finally conceeded defeat when I realized my Knight simply couldn't cut through the Marro Warriors faster than they could clone.
Our first game finished, we immediately rushed out the door to scoop up whatever units we could find at Target/Walmart. By the end of the month, I had most everything except Wave 3 and Wave 4.5. Hopefully by the end of this month (AKA tomorrow) I'll have my collection to a point I'm happy with for now. 3x of each common, 1x of each unique. :D
That last line is PRICELESS.

I am saying use this thread to compile all the possible one-line reasons why someone got into Heroscape. Then create a new thread with an associated poll that lists the agreed upon reasons so you can tally easier that way. People can then leave their more detailed stories here, at the new thread, or one of the various other older threads.

That sounds like a neat idea, and is certainly a positive spin on what could have otherwise be viewed as a necro'd/rehashed thread. I personally would like to see an organized compilation of what folks into this wonderful game, and, Chilling Touch, more power to ya if that's the direction you choose to go!:)

Thanks for taking my ideas and using them the way you wanted. Collaborating is a good thing. One thing I would still suggest is somehow distinguish "Saw Heroscape at a store" to two different possibilities - a Big Box store such as Walmart or ToysRUS or Game/Hobby stores (FLGS).
I would expect to see the difference between these two as most "gamers" would see HS first at Game store or online review, while others probably saw it on the racks at TRU/Wally-world or in a TV commercial. Basically I want to know how many people were "gamers" before they got into Heroscape, but asking it an a backhand way and not asking a loaded question that includes "gamer in it."

Quoted for truth. Of course that was the plan. Nothing ever goes to according to plan though. I think the first army I ever played was a bunch of zombies and robots running around the jungle. It just seemed too awesome to combine so many themes into one game so easily. There's no way I could pass that up. To top it off this game has the best set of stack-able hexagons I've ever known. I was a sucker for this game before the dice were in my hand.

Specifically my Nephew saw it in a big-box store (not Walmart/Toys-R-Us, one of the smaller ones), bought it, loved it, and then either he or my brother realized I would love it to.
