I would actually bet that there hasn't been a topic about that here, although there was at HQ. I'm a bit tired to search, so I'll just answer.
There are two primary versions of the master set, but version one had a slight change before there was a true version two.
Version 1
First edition rule books and scenario book
Sparkly translucent water
Blue defense dice and red attack dice
The box had a clear plastic window that allowed you to see the actual Thorgrim figure.
Version 1.1
Identical to Version 1 except the water became non-sparkly and opaque
Version 2.0
Second edition Rule book that combined Basic and Master, and the scenarios. There were also "corrections" and clarifications such as climbing rules, and clarificaiton on clear sight spaces. There are more, I don't know them all and only mention these two.
Same water as V1.1
Combined attack/defense dice in white with blue shields and red skulls
Box no longer has the clear plastic window, just a printed picture of Throgrim that says "actual size"

There is an imprinted number on all heroscape boxes. (Embossed into the cardboard). The bigger the number, the later it was packaged. There's some magic number around 43XXX where they changed. Someone might know what the exact number is...

It helps some. It means if the number is lower than that it is definately sparkley.
