View Full Version : The best music for weight lifting.

I've been doing weight lifting for a while, and I listen to my iPod while I lift weights. I'm pretty sure the only thing that has kept my sanity is the music. Especially because on my way back down on my last repetition for a lift I hold it halfway for ten seconds, it really fatigues the muscle. Anyway, listening to music kind of stimulated my adrenaline, giving me energy surges and whatnot.
So if anyone wants a list of things that helped:
Slipknot (old school, like Self Titled and Iowa)
Bauhaus (I listen to Volumes 1 and 2 of their greatest hits.)
Siouxsie and the Banshees
The Cure
The Cruxshadows
Nine Inch Nails
Evanescence
Marilyn Manson (I like his music, not the way he looks or anything, he's a weird guy but his music is SO good.)
Anyway, hope it helps any of you who are trying to get that dream body or whatever you want. Anyway. Any other music you listen to that might help would be much appreciated.

Sorta going off of your current music regimen, I'd suggest some tunes from Nick Cave's catalog (From Her to Eternity, Black Betty, Papa Won't Leave You Henry, Stagger Lee, etc.), including The Birthday Party (Mutiny in Heaven, Dead Joe, King Ink, etc.) If you've no idea what I'm talking about, happy to send you a Nick Cave: "songs to lift weights to" sampler :)

I liked the soundtrack to the movie "The One" with Jet Li. It has some good stuff IMO. Personally I go with whatever I have close to the CD player in my room that strikes my fancy. (I've got a bench, and about 300 lb of free weights in my room).

Wow, I haven't seriously lifted free weights since I was in high school. But when I did, I remember really liking Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express on vinyl. I'd put that slab of black plastic on the turntable and workout to it over and over again.

Oh, I listen to a large variety of music, my iPod is brand new so those are the only things I had on me to import onto it at the time.

Funny, because I'm IN high school. :P

Me too, good sir :) If not for variety, very few reasons to listen to the bulk of the music I do  But even more reason you should check out Nick Cave - thematically and stylistically all over the place, yet cohesive because of his sensibilities. Some complexity to the anger and desparation that you listen to while lifting  :joke: , seriously, I like the majority of his stuff for many an occasion, but did take the time to set a playlist for when I used to work out on a regular basis. (btw, your thread is contributing to my motivation to get moving again - I'm starting to lose my boyish agility...)

Danzig is good stuff
Back in the day I use to really like these guys.
"Not about to see your light
And if you wanna find hell with me
I can show you what it's like
Till you're bleeding"
-Mother
If you are like me and have a young child, you tend to workout to the "Wiggles" a lot.
If I can help it I watch the news or sports center to try and kill two birds with one stone.

Hahaha, the music I listen to IS angry and desperate. It gives fuel to the fire.

I have to step in again and say DON'T listen to something funny. Nothing like trying to cathc your breath after a heavy set of deadlifts and start laughing because of something from the Strongbad Sings CD that you just caught for the first time.

Ditto. Its escpecially bad when you're benching and you and your lifting partner are both laughing too hard to get the bar off your chest.

A couple years back I dated a girl that always worked out to 80s new wave and like early MTV-era stuff. She swore by it. Cardio, weight training, you name it, there was Cars or Blondie or so on involved. She was in really great shape, so maybe she was on to something.

I never really get what "new wave" is.
As for what to listen to:
Nirvana-Aneurysm

Metallica (the early stuff), Matrix soundtrack (only a few tracks, but the thought of the movie throughout the tracks makes up for the rest), Mortal Kombat soundtrack, Guns N Roses (Appetite for Destruction & Use Your Illusion II), Godsmack, and anything else that has a decent balance of heavy rock with some slower stuff for your breaks.

That is a song from a Rocky Film (2, I wanna say EDIT: but 3 would be correct - thank you, GaryLSQ :) ) - but not the song from the film Rocky. Gonna fly now! (at least, that's what I always heard when it was playing while we were running laps during grade school gym class, so I guess it must be a good song to work out to. Of course, it wasn't good enough to train Rocky Balboa to defeat Apollo Creed  )

Definitely try some Monster Magnet, good tunes would be:
Powertrip
Monolithic
Negasonic teenage Warhead
Who am I kidding? Any Monster Magnet is good weightlifting music. They're what I play religiously when hitting the bowflex!

Of course, Nirvana... I need to get that on my iPod.
All of these suggestions are great, I've been listening to samples of each one on Amazon, I'll be doing some shopping soon... :D

That reminds me. When I was going to college there was a flyer up for a couple garage bands. One was Richard Nixon and the Presidents, the other was Clubber Lang and the Heavyweights. It had a black and white pic of a couple of guys with Mr T and Richard Nixon masks on. It made me laugh. If I wasn't working nights I probably would have gone just on the sense of humor of the flyer.
