Ruins of Heroes Past Bio - A gentle breeze starts a tingling shiver down your neck. The clang of swords on shields echo from a distant time. Only the the rubble of decaying pillars and roofs confirm your suspicions that it's just your imagination. But by the hairs standing on ends up and down your arms, you swear the presence of the long forgotten heroes are training around you as you stand in this once majestic courtyard.-Rulings and Clarifications-

Looks good, except for the uncapped pillars. I know, it's not that big of deal for many, but they really do get to me. Now, if they actually looked like they do in VS, it might not be as big of a deal, but those knobs on top of uncapped walls...<shudder>.
Keep up the good work!

I actually think the uncapped tops help this map look derelict. I actually built this first, then put into VS.

I love the name. Is this supposed to be on an island, though? If so, I'd love to see more sand and some jungle trees ... if not, it's perfect as is. :-D

I was actually envisioning this as the middle of some place like Themyscira. Where this building is the central building of the queen, with the assembly courtyard (sand tiles) in front. All other buildings would be built off & around this one, but can't be seen as the map isn't large enough to bring them into view :D.
(I was thinking that I could include some jungle brush, but since I don't have the set I don't have any experience with aesthetic layout for them so I avoid it)

Fair enough. :-) A nice part of a five or six map Amazon campaign?

You'll need a "Field of Champions" where Wonder Woman can battle others to be the champion of her people. :-D

Looks cool. I wonder if you could squeeze the Master Set ruins in between those columns towards the front. One on either side guarding the flanks of the the main building... that would be cool I think.

I'm not sure I know exactly were you mean. The 4 pillars either side are supposed to represent those ancient style pathways that are lined with the pillars. Down on the 7 hex rock pieces is where I envision the start zones to be. The glyph of Gerda in the ruins to entice some action up there.
BTW: I just got a game in with my son on this map & it was fun. He had the C3G WW, C3G Superman, my Blue Beetle (http://aslade.gallery.netspace.net.au/albums/album10/BlueBeetle.jpg), my Green Lantern (http://aslade.gallery.netspace.net.au/albums/album10/GreenLantern.jpg), & my Dove (http://aslade.gallery.netspace.net.au/albums/album10/Dove.jpg). I had C3G Doomsday, MH's Black Adam (http://aslade.gallery.netspace.net.au/albums/For_Others/MH_BlackAdam.jpg), MH's Johnn J'onz (http://aslade.gallery.netspace.net.au/albums/For_Others/MH_JohnJonnz.jpg), NecroBlades's Beast Boy (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/skeletalwolf28/Heroscape/Supers/BeastBoyNM24.jpg). Doomsday got to the glyph by round 2. With GL's carry ability (Come One, Come All...) Tristan had his whole team in the ruined building by this time, mine were all on the outskirts. BB kept pounding D'day with the height advantage, but D'day didn't couldn't land a punch (the one time he got past the Strobe Pistol he only had 1 skull which BB easily defended). BB finished D'day in round 3 (that's just wrong). WW & GL were beating up BA but BBoy came & chomped GL. Dove then went after BBoy, BBoy laughed in her face but couldn't land a punch (Tristan was on fire with the D20 rolls for defense). WW successfully took out BA in round 4. I of course was using 2 OM's per round to revive D'day, he came back in round 6. WW started to beat up JJ in round 4, JJ ran away escaping the leaving engagement attack (since he couldn't use phantom movement due to WW's Lasso). BB was holding the glyph the whole game. D'day revived next to JJ but was immediately met by Superman. Superman then ignored D'day & smashed JJ into oblivion. Superman then pounded D'day back to the never world. Man of Steel kept Superman from taking a single wound. It might of been bad luck of the dice but D'day really felt like he had a glass jaw, as the extra defense dice really didn't help when Superman was consistently rolling 4-5 skulls (Tristan has a lot of luck I think). BBoy chomped Dove & then was reverted back to himself when WW landed next to him. BBoy somehow lasted 2 rounds (I didn't think he would last 1 so I didn't spend OM's on D'day). But the end was inevitable. Tristan won out & still had an uninjured Superman & BB, & WW only had 3 wounds.
It was a good match though & the D'day OM in death really makes for a hard strategic decision.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I would like to point out that D-day is a Krypton(ian) :p, so Man of Steel doesn't work on him.

Crap you are right. Forgot that. He might of actually put about 3 wounds on Supes in that case, but the outcome would not have changed.

Once again, the uncapped pillars fail to bother me. I would like to see the sandy area extended a little further "down" the map, staying the same width but at least coming one more hex from the temple. I would also enjoy seeing some jungle foliage near the pillars on either side of the sandy battle area. It would help break things up, IMO.
Great job with the temple.

I do agree with all of that, however, I don't want to pressure A3n into creating a map that he cannot build and enjoy. He has stated that he doesn't have any Jungle terrain, so I am OK with it not being on this map. I am sure that overtime we will all take many cracks at jungle temple themes.
I still agree with you though. Perhaps one of us should make a Jungle forest map with some Pillars and ruins running off into the jungle. :ponder:

Well that clearly demonstrates what you meant, but I don't think I like it. What was you vision of having them there?
My vision:

Was the inside of the building difficult to play on, or did it not get much use? Because it looks like it may be a pain to try and play inside of it.

No because of the pole being easily moved out of the way as required, because it isn't attached or anchored to anything.

So you had to remove part of the map at times to play on it? :| That gets a fail from me.

I suppose the easiest way to fix that is to remove that column altogether then.

Ok I have removed the pillar, changed the glyph & added some ruins.
Anybody want to build this & have a go. (I built it originally & enjoyed it immensely but that was before the above alterations.)
BTW as a side note it is official ruling to remove the tops of the TJ trees during game play to move your pieces around.

Ok I set this up & played on it tonight. I have made 2 very small minor changes. I removed the door & added a tile to the hole was that the door covered. Removing the door just let more light in & gave it more of the Athenian/Amazonian architectural feel back that the door robbed it of.
Before I played on it tonight (after setting it up) I was thinking about it's functionality & getting full use of the map. The first thing when I look at the map is that it does look damn good :D. But I had to ask myself if I didn't intentionally go up into the building would it ever really get used. So with that in mind I decided that when I played tonight I wouldn't think about getting up to the building. But after a few rounds that's where the fight ended up. I was mildly surprised & greatly glad. Now the way it happened was very cool & it has everything to do with the design of the map (admittedly unintentional :| - I would really love to say that's exactly how I planned it). Anyway ranged figures might skirt around the edges of the courtyard & then obviously find themselves going for the height of the border blocks. Melee units try to hold off near the blocks at first but end up either going after the ranged units on the blocks or meeting other melee units on these blocks. Then the units are basically dancing up the steps. It's almost like those old Zorro style movies where the swordfighters are twisting around each other to try to gain the upper hand whilst moving up the stairs. Because the height advantage is the desirable position you are always trying to attain it & because on this map it is easy to get height advantage in each turn, even if you are locked in engagement with another figure, it's just a simple matter of circling around the figure whilst remaining engage. & all these movements of course lead to the central height of the map, the building itself. Perfect. It's almost poetry to behold. I really love this map. I suggest you try NOW!
Anyway I propose this map as finalised & ready for release.

I think there's an error in the pdf for this map. The build instructions say to build five-tall ladders on the sides of the building/ruins, while the picture clearly shows six-tall ladders.
That being said, I really like the look of this map in person. There are a whole bunch of little things that are hard to notice in the rendering that really add to the quality of the map. The way the hex interlocks line up on the columns in front of the structure make them look like they may have been walls at some point, there's very little layer-caking, and all the "normal terrain" looks like it belongs exactly where it is (ie rock, grass, and sand are not interchangeable on this map).

Sudden brainstorm ... I'm pretty sure this one is wrapped up, but you guys could always put molten lava on the pillar tops to represent "torches". Might make someone like Human Torch too powerful, though, I suppose ...

That's a really cool idea. I also think Fire Elementals would be really great as well. I only have 3, so I went ahead and placed 2: one on each of the capped columns at the approach (not the ones at the very front, but the ones 4 spaces back).
