Hello everyone,

I'm pretty new to Heroscape and have been playing primarily with my brother. We dont really know anyone else in the area who plays, so we dont have many people to ask questions to. Anyway, my biggest question (I'm sure it's been addressed somewhere on this board, but they are just so many topics!) is where should I start with the Heroscape game? Heroscape figures seem pretty tough to come by in the stores, and I often find myself holding some expansion sets in my hands and trying to figure out which one to buy. Are there any expansions that are particularly hard to find that I should buy as soon as I see them because I will probably never see them again? I'd appreciate any help from you guys I can get.

Welcome to the addictio....I mean game! :D :D

Opinions may vary, but in my area the rarest expansions are wave 3 and castles. ALWAYS pick up a castle if you see one! Other semi-rare waves include 1, 2, and sometimes 4 (depending on how long it takes your store to start stocking the next wave). My wally world has been out of castles for a month, and only just last week got the small figure packs in--they were wave 5 so i doubt wave 4 will be anywhere around here in the near future.

Hope that helps, but you can get the best advice if you let people know your location. For the US, list your state, then city: MN - Mountain Lake would be how mine looks (except nobody knows where the dang place is, so I just say southwest MN).

Not rare but road to the forgotten forrest adds the most play value to the game in many people's opinion

eventually, the expansions you see now will be gone, and updated with new stuff, so you are better off buying what you can when you can than just waiting. I made the mistake of just getting what i thought looked cool at first and ended up with Taelord and Kelda from Wave 1 because i traded the others. Then wave 2 came and i bought 2x Drones and minions, and traded the drones, which i regret now. When i get a job, i am going to take the route most everyone else here has taken:

1x of every unique
3x of every Common
3x of each terrain set.

Everything except wave 3 and castles seems to be available at the distributor level, so you can get it through online ordering at a place like http://housemousegames.com/ (highly recommended). Wave 3 seems to be out of stock - I would suspect this is at the Hasbro level and they need to produce another run before we'll see it again. As a result, you can't find it online and it's hard to find in stores as when they restock it won't be wave 3. I would also suspect that the initial production run of castles fell far short of demand, and the reason it's hard to find is that there aren't enough to go around. Both of these sets will no doubt be more readily available in the future though.

Thanks for all of your advice! When I bought my first Master Set I actually got the one from Walmart with the Elite Onyx Vipers for $20, the Road to the Forgotten Forest for $11, and a castle for $25. Once I started looking for stuff on ebay and was reading the Heroscapers boards and found out how many master sets you guys actually play with, I tried to go back and get more, but was having difficulty in finding them. I just didn't want to let another opportunity like that slip away. Is Volcarren Wasteland difficult to find? There is a Toys R Us by me in Port Charlotte that has 3 of them and I never bought one because I figured if there were that many it must be pretty common. Should I grab one or try to get some other stuff first?

If you can order online, only wave 3 and castles are hard to come by. The wasteland can be ordered np.

Wave 3 is a nightmare to find. I managed to find one set of Sentinels and Monks, and one set of Agents and Scots in a small game store nearby. Every other Wave 3 set I own has come from HouseMouseGames. The heroes or Wave 3 in particular are extremely hard to come by. I've never seen them in a single store.

As far as how you should go about growing your collection:

Start with unique sets first. Generally, common squads are a little disappointing and not very interesting without multiples. Some are essentially useless with a single squad. Unique figures generally have the most interesting specials and fully realized gameplay with just a single purchase.

Try to collect one of everything next. I find the variety of units far more interesting than large amounts of the same thing. Also, this will let you find what units you enjoy the most and help you see which ones you want more of.

3 of every common is a good number for most people (maybe even a little excessive). It gives you enough to field almost any combination you'd want in the 300-500 point range. Eventually you might want more of certain units.

Right now my goal is to be able to field 200 points of any common squad. This means I have 4 sets of 50 point romans, 5 sets of 40 point Venoc Vipers, but still only 3 sets of 70 point Knights of Weston. Even at this point I'm starting to really push the limits of what people will draft.
