Okay for all those who miss the active topics on the main forums page (like was seen on HQ and .net) I've got a treat for you. Scroll to the bottom of the main page and you've got yourself a scrolling latest activity box.

For those of you who don't miss this feature it's at the bottom of the page here and can be easily ignored. The View Topics Since Last Visit is still there for ya.

no prob!
And I just noticed the awesome-as-heck 15 Latest Posts scroll at the bottom of the Forum Index page.

Was wondering if you may want to put it on the Top of the Forum Index page, and maybe even somewhere on the Front Page....?
And can the user get control of that scroll window, or is it only a wait-and-see-what-scrolls-by window?

I've said before I don't write my own code. These are codes written by others made available to the public. So no I can't move it to the top and no I can't put it on the main page and yes you have to wait and watch the scroll. :) But hey it's better than nothing for those who missed this feature.

Just curious why isn't this thread in the HS News Forum? Kinda confusing when that topic does say "Sightings, HS.com updates, News, etc."

Still like the scrolling active topics.

This is HSers.com not Heroscape.com :) Anything dealing with the community this site or HQ/other scape community sites belongs in scapers online.

Ah okay I read HS.com as Heroscapers.com since the Heroscape.com site never gets updated. Coolio. I'll go back to being ignored...thanks. :D

I love it...but I agree with K/H_Addict
that it would be a nice feature to have a scrollbar on it...

But I really appreciate the new feature and I think you (pl) are doing a great job responding to the needs of the community.

I think that DarkSpade
is suggesting that the most recent 15 posts
be displayed on the homepage (like the old site.)

The main page is fine(well kinda). I'm talking about the link to the forums. Since it really is the heart and soul of the site, I think it should be far more noticeable.

Over all though, I'd love to see the whole thing look a lot more like the HQ. Currently, this seems more like a blog with a very active forum. HQ was more of a full resource. Of course, I imagine it's only a matter of time for truth and the gang to get the kinks worked out, and flesh out the site.

Yes, I noticed (right before GW took it down) that one poster on HQ was complaining that this site looks like a blog.
(Which the front page does!)

I agree something big on the front page would be nice to steer people into the Forums,
and the recent posts box on HQ did a good job of that.

On the other hand, the front page articles are pretty cool.
But they don't seem very integrated with the forums.
(I have to use my e-mail address to post a comment?)

Anyway, this is only offered as constructive criticism,
the new site is really so great, we just want to see it more great, I guess!

Actually I'm quite happy with the site's basic structure as it is now. I've gotten the links on the front page enlarged. And most every front page post directs readers to the forums. I really don't think it's hard to miss the forums. The front page being the way it is, is so that visitors of the site don't get intimidated and overloaded all at once. Forums can be a scary thing for those who are used to having the internet spoon fed to them. Forums equals searching for what you want. And many people just don't know how to do that. Thus the pretty face on the front and the offer to dive deeper.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e179/Syvarris8/FORUMS.jpgI think it's obvious that the scrolling forums should go there, with a big hyperlink to the forums.

The vast majority of reason why people would come here is to get to the forums.
I don't think it's a good idea to have the Community link that small, only in the upper-right.

But it may come at a later time, since any modification to the front page would likely require some effort in coding and changing the template, which is not easy.

It would help out everyone visiting the site for the first time, though....

Better, but the text color needs to be changed so it stands out from the blog text.

There's a little problem with that: Color coordination. Our options are limited.
The big banner on the front page is one big link over to here now. All the news stories mention the forums. The link is in prime real estate. If anyone misses the forums it's just cause they don't give a rat about HS and stumbled across the page on accident and didn't look around AT ALL.

You mainly are right, truth, but just to give the benefit of the doubt, for kids....
maybe we could put the small text to the right of the warrior-guy that says Visit the Forums of something.

It would be obvious, visually, yet with the text blending in it would be tasteful, and non-dominating.

It would be a one-time variation of that official logo.

And BTW - could that logo PLEASE put a ' in front of scape?

So that it's "your source for all things 'scape"
the all-lower-case is extreme enough - at least put a apostrophe on an abbreviation...

To quote myself from over on the HLD.com thread:

Seriously - this is the way it's been for ever on the HS fansite - why does it need to change?
I'm not feeling y'all's desperate need for a change on how things are done here?

From reading the comments on this thread it doesn't sound like anybody's desperate for change, and certainly not here. But just because something is the status quo doesn't mean it's the best... or only way to do things.

One size does not fit all. If I had never seen the HS Codex, I would never have looked in on HQ. From the outside it looked like a whole lot of noise. I read the codex and found distilled information in a deliverable format, which I love. Because the Codex I saw that something really was happenning at HQ.

-Doug

You see this is exactlly why I want to take things going on inside the forums and present them as clean crisp stories on the front page! And not just have the whole thing just be one GIANT link over to the forums. Visitors have to find content easily and then move there way from spoon feeding into the big bad forums.

truth - part of me agrees with you in concept.

The problem is - go imagine you are a newbie looking for HS online - look at the main page thru those eyes.

It looks like a HS blog, man.

It really does!
It looks so much like a HS blog that one guy put up, it is scary.

Because this is the design, I think the small capitulation of a REALLY obvious redirect to the forums (where 99% of the content and benefit of the site is) is a small price to pay for new people instantly finding what they're looking for, and not being disappointed and confused.

Maybe if each person who posted on the front page mentioned the forum with a link?

"More information can be found if you read the Heroscapers.com forums"

That way, even if they don't see the community link, they have an alternate access road. (multiple even)
