Wednesday, January 20, 2010 - http://www.imagecomics.com/images/spacer.gifVariety reported today that Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard's ongoing tale of survival horror in a post-apocalyptic world, THE WALKING DEAD, has been greenlit as a pilot by AMC.
"THE WALKING DEAD's road to the small screen has been a long one, but so far it's looking like the best of all worlds," creator and writer Robert Kirkman said. "Given AMC's track record with shows like 'Madmen' and 'Breaking Bad,' combined with Frank Darabont writing and directing, I couldn't possibly be more excited for this to come together. Having the pilot greenlit is a huge leap forward to this becoming a reality."
THE WALKING DEAD has been published by Image Comics since 2003, with the series' 69th issue due in stores next week. Current plans are for the AMC series to closely adapt the storylines presented in the monthly comics.
I know this isn't new news, but until Wednesday it wasn't official. And speaking of the Dead comic (which we weren't) if a letter is printed in an upcoming letters page signed Nick Fury, that's me. It'll make sense, trust me. Trust Nick Fury.

I think the pilot still has to win them over, which won't be finished until spring, but this is very good news for one of my favorite on going comics.

Found a little more info:
According to Bloody Disgusting, the pilot episode of "The Walking Dead," AMC's adaptation of Robert Kirkman's long-running Image Comics series, is set to begin filming on May 15, 2010. Shooting will commence in Atlanta, Georgia, the setting for the first several issues of the comic book series.
Last month, AMC officially ordered a pilot episode, though that's only one step towards bringing "The Walking Dead" to television. If the final pilot episode isn't up to the network's standards, AMC is not required to pick it up for further episodes.
But if an early script review is any indicator, fans of "The Walking Dead" have little to fear regarding the adaptation's quality.
"'The Walking Dead' could even do for horror what the new 'Battlestar Galactica' did for science fiction," was the reviewer's final assessment.
I wonder if any Atlanta ‘scapers could get a job as a zombie extra? Man, how cool would it be to be able to say "Yeah, I was tank top Zombie #5 in the Walking Dead pilot."

Sarah Wayne Callies Added to The Walking Dead Cast Posted by Chris Lansdell on 05.01.2010
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Sarah Wayne Callies (Prison Break) has joined the cast of The Walking Dead, which is based on Robert Kirkman's comic series published by Image Comics. Callies will be playing the female lead role of Lori Grimes, wife of the show's hero Rick.

Thanks for the updates.
Got some more.
AMC has added to the cast of Frank Darabont's apocalyptic zombie drama "The Walking Dead."
The production has tapped Laurie Holden for the role of Andrea, a key member of the survivor group who has a proficiency with a sniper rifle and falls for a man twice her age.
Holden was in writer-producer-director Darabont's "The Mist" and had a recurring role in the final season of FX's "The Shield." She is repped by APA and Framework.
Also, Adam Fierro has joined the production as a consulting producer. The ICM-repped Fierro has worked on such serialized dramas as "Dexter," "Shield" and "24."
In addition, newcomer Steven Yeun has been added to the cast as Glenn. He and Holden join Andrew Lincoln, Jeffrey DeMunn and Jon Bernthal on the show.

More info straight from Kirkman his own self:
"Anything you have seen in 'Breaking Bad' we can do every minute of our show," Kirkman said, indicating that "Walking Dead" would feature gore on the level of severed heads and exploding brains. "There's a lot of things you can get away with, because they are zombies, so you will be seeing all kinds of cool stuff that you would expect to see in 'The Walking Dead: The TV Show.'"
Kirkman also clarified that the show won't be shot in black-and-white, despite the lack of color seen in the comic book series.
"I kind of like that the show is going to be somewhat different than the comic, so that it will be a different experience for people who like the comic and read the comic. I'm fine with it being in color and I think it's going to be great," he said. "Now it's not going to be a rainbowy bright color kind of show because I know they are doing a lot of visual stuff to kind of dull things down and not put a lot of bright colors on screen and make it visually interesting and fit the tone of the story, but it's not going to be black and white."
Kirkman's assertion that the show will differ from the comic book applies to the story, as well. While certain arcs and developments will mirror the comics, Kirkman said that the TV show will introduce completely new characters and story-lines in order to keep things fresh for fans of both versions of the story. One character he imagines will make its way to the AMC series is the Governor.
"We will probably eventually see The Governor because that is a big part of the comic book," said Kirkman. "So, there's cool stuff like that that will definitely be making into the show if we continue on, but it's not going to follow the comic book story for story."
Additionally, Kirkman confirmed speculation that Jeffrey DeMunn is playing Dale on the show.
October is going to rock!

Well? What did everyone think?
I thought it was extremely well done.
Top 3 Favorite moments:
1) Rick walking down the hospital corridor and seeing the Don't Open Dead Inside door, those were some creepy fingers
2) Rick turning the corner and seeing the horde in Atlanta and then hauling butt on the horse away from the horde
3) bicycle girl crawling through the park, fantastic effect
Looking forward to episode two.

I thought it was pretty awesome, although I only saw about half of the episode (up to where you are introduced to Rick's wife and son in the survival camp). The zombie effects were insanely awesome, especially the girl who only had her upper half.
Wish I could've seen all of it, but I wasn't about to sit through college classes with only a few hours of sleep.

Oh good. I was scared that I would never be able to see the sweetness of a cop on a horse bolting from a mass of zombies.
BTW did we wind up finding out what happened to that one guy and his son. The last I saw, he was picking off zombies with headshots from his house window, but couldn't bring himself to shoot his wife.

This show was everything I had hoped it would be. My wife even enjoyed it.
I pretty much knew I was going to like this series even before it came out. The one thing that had me worried was if they were going to be able to properly portray all of the zombie carnage on television. After the opening scene in the gas station I knew everything would be okay.

There were a lot of great parts of this to like. Sadly of course its the differences that bother me that I remember. Just in a half glass full mood I guess. They are humanizing the zombies too much making them do things they wouldn't in the comic and that sort of bothers me. I know it helps flesh out the living characters more but in the comic the zombies are very mindless and that difference is an issue to me.

I like how a lot of the little changes really upped the creepiness of it (the aforementioned hospital door; the loading dock; Rick's co-worker coming back) and added to the characters (Rick apologizing to the zombie; the pictures being gone). And of course the zombie effects were amazing.
This is the first show that I've ever set the DVR to record the series.

That's what I thought, too. And as long as we're guessing:
I'm guessing Merle is going to show up working for the Governor next season. He'll be his right hand man. Ha. Irony. When Rick and Co. arrive and get captured he'll exact his revenge on Rick with the whole "You took my hand, I'm taking yours, Bubba!" spiel.

I've been wondering where the heck Merle has gone. I kept expecting him to show up at the camp with guns-a-blazin'. I like your guess (although I don't know who the Gov. is...is that from the comic?)

Yep. He's a major bad guy from the comic and is responsible (in the comic) for taking Rick's hand. You should read the comics if you get a chance. As much as I like the show, I love the comics more. I do think it's cool the show differs from the comic, though. It keeps me guessing. In the comic there is no Merle, Daryl or T-Dog. So I have no idea what's in store for those guys. There also hasn't been a CDC and Vatos storyline in the comics.

I don't like these mid season breaks more and more shows are doing. At least it is only 2 months and not 9 months or however long Breaking Bad is taking off. Stupid sweeps week money grabs.
I really want Daryl to make it but I'm ready for his brother to die. I'm guessing that Rick will stage another attack before they are executed though and bring them both back to the prison which will cause all kind of problems for his group.
The Governor has got to be running out of soldiers, how many of his stooges have been killed off now? I was under the impression that most of the people in his town were weak sheep with only a limited number of actual skilled fighters.
I really hate the Andrea character now in season 3. What a massive turn for the worse for that character after a good showing in season 2.
Glenn on the other hand has always been a favorite of mine but now he is really stepping up to the next level.

Added bonus:
This song fills me with Holiday cheer!
ZOMBIE WONDERLAND
Sung to the tune of “Winter Wonderland”
Undead moan, are you listening?
In the lane, blood is glistening.
A horrible sight,
We’re screaming tonight,
Runnin’ through a Zombie wonderland.
Already turned, is our neighbor!
Zombies here, I belabor.
They moan their own song,
As we scream along,
Sprintin’ through a Zombie wonderland.
In the meadow, we can beg for mercy.
They’ve already eaten Parson Brown.
They’ll come for us next,
And we’ll say, “No man!”
We’re getting’ the hell
Out of this town.
Later on, we’ll perspire,
As we scream, by the fire.
I’ll say we’re afraid
Of the Zombies they’ve made,
Runnin’ through a Zombie wonderland.
