On the front page, it has a small text on the right that suggests this site could be added to a RSS news-feed-capable page (like Google Customized Homepages) -

I click the link, but it doesn;t seem to work.

Are there plans on adding this feature?

Also, I don't see a general Site Plans/Fixes thread, so I made this specific thread.

(I noticed at the bottom of the frontpage, you may want to change "Offical" to "Official" )

Yes reaps I plan on fixing this to make feeds available. Just haven't gotten to it yet. And thanks for the misspell heads up!

Awesome!
I've added it to my Google Homepage, and it features the news articles fantastically!

People should really try it out - I don;t feel like making a pic of it, like I did on .net, but it's REALLY convenient - I think many HSers would like it if they tried.... ;)

reaper,

At the risk of sounding exceptionally ignorant, I've never really gotten the whole RSS thing. Drawing on your experience as a trainer, is there any chance that you could post a tutorial on what this does and how it could benefit other scapers?

I'm no slouch with computers, but if I don't understand it, I'll be there are others out there who just don't want to look ignorant going, "WTF did the Roman say?"

OK Doc here is a quick down and dirty expliantion. I use FireFox as my browser. Sage is an extension that allows you to subscribe to RSS feeds.

http://upload4.postimage.org/235972/Sage.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/235972/photo_hosting.html)

OK look at the first pic, all of my RSS feeds are on the left.

After I hit refresh

http://upload4.postimage.org/235975/sage2.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/235975/photo_hosting.html)

It highlights the sites that have NEW posts. It one click glance I can see what sites have new info versus have to go look at all of them individually.

This is what Yahoo News looks like

Hope this helps.http://upload4.postimage.org/235996/sage_feed.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/235996/photo_hosting.html)

Thanks Hahn, I use Firefox and had read that it was RSS friendly, but I was not aware of Sage. I'll be downloading this soon.

Here's my Google Homepage Customized with the HSers RSS feed on the upper-left, informing me as soon as i bring up my IE that something has been posted on the news page.

If you're interested, it is very easy -just go to www.Google.com/ig and sign up (or Sign In) with GMail account, and start adding your feeds.
To get HSers newsfeed, use the text link to the right of the google icon that says "Add by URL" and use the address of http://heroscapers.com/wp-feed.php/

I don't know why a google account is needed, but things are different for different browsers and versions of each. If you want RSS, first get the newest version of your browser, they all have RSS built into the browser toolbar now. Here is more info on each:

Firefox
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/livebookmarks.html

Internet Explorer
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/tour/rss/

Safari
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/safari/

For those of you who don't know what RSS is, it stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is like a news web page or blog file, but with all the fancy web site formatting and graphics removed so all u get is the image and news blurbs and any audio or video file that is attached to it each. It also lets you sort them nicely by date, title, etc.

RSS also powers podcasts and videocasts, which can be linked in the iTunes music store. This means if someone wanted to record MP3s of Heroscape topics we could get a page in the iTunes music store for out podcasts (and videos,) then anyone in the world can subscribe to the Heroscapers podcast and get the audio and video episodes automatically updated in their iTunes and iPod. podcasts are best for formats like talk radio shows or newsblurbs, i.e. one podcast episode just says "Wave 5 is shipping now. It is available to buy at ____. For more info, check out heroscapers.com." But there is a lot of potential if someone is feeling creative enough and is willing to keep up with it.

Who knew funrun was such a geek. :P

RSS is awesome. I use Firefox with the WizzReader extension for my RSS feeds. Sage works just as well, as Hahn suggested.

Firefox is awesome.

Oh - and a GMail account is needed to use the Google Customized Homepage, which rocks on toast, is all.

But heck - a GMail account is so popular and useful, that businesses use it now to send larger files than their email serves and their email size restrictions allow. So it;s a good idea to get anyway.....

Eh, I was trying not to be so obvious about it, but I couldn't help clear things up a bit. 8)

In case you missed it, above here I was thanking truth for letting me fix the RSS feeds for him, hehehe.

I have to say, if we could have an RSS of the top XX topics, that would rock. It was something that hero had added to .net near the end and I just loved it. It allowed me to be a more circumspect about scanning the threads while at work as I had it added to my news page.

Maybe Hero can hook this up again here?

It sure is nice to find out there is something you don't know about the coding :-) I've been really feeling the geek girl intimidation lately.

I'll see what I can find, in my (hahahahahaaa) spare time.

I've actually never worked with the code this site is run on, I figure it out as I go and what I don't know I can find with a Google search. I just don't have time to look this one up for a while, and if Hero already knows how to do it, then hopefully I won't have to look it up!

Well, just an update and a question:

Currently, there are 2 RSS feeds for HSers:
The News stories (which only update when new stories are put on the front page) and the Recent Threads link, which shows the last X posts on the forums (I have mine currently set to 9).

I'm wondering - how often does the Posts feed update?

Cause it doesn;t seem to be updating very well - seldom is that list the same as when I come to the site and check the all-powerful "Posts since last visit" link.

:shrug:Beats me. I didn't install the RSS feed for most recent threads. Maybe try updating the page or emptying your cache

My RSS feed is still showing the new posts from like 3 weeks ago.
Does anyone else have the posts RSS feed and could you check to see what's being displayed?
Thanks....
