Space Station Omega has always been a mystery and no one is quite sure what its purpose was for. All anyone in the general public knew about the project was that the Space Station was a joint venture between 6 different powerful nations working for a "common good". We had seen enough fighting and the thought of everyone working together was enough to satisfy the curious minds.
On the 21st of July, during a routine communication with Ground Control there was a brief flash of light on the monitor and then nothing. All contact, visual and audio, with the space station was lost.
Recovering the space station was out of the question, but what was on the space station was of vital importance to not only the program itself, but to each of the countries involved as well as every other person on Earth......

August 1st
Six men sit around a table in a dimly lit conference room. Their gruff hard faces look out of place. Each carefully sizing up the other without a word being uttered.
The door opens and in walks General Ratchett.....
"Gentlemen....we have a proposition for you. Now I don't know what you know or don't know about Space Station Omega and quite frankly I don't care. What I do know is that you are the best at what you do. We need you to go to Space Station Omega and bring us back something. The fact of the matter is you may not all make it back...but if you do make it back with what we need you to get then your reward will be 25 million dollars in cash. Who's in?"
Without a question asked they all raised their hands.
"That's what I thought"
He passes a sealed envelope to each of the 6 men.
"This is your mission........ you leave in 1 hour"
(Have I piqued your interest?)

Space Station Omega is the first board game from RacNRoll Gaming, a new company formed by myself, nyys and Ollie.
In Space Station Omega you play the role of one of the Mercenaries.
Your objective is to recover the items on Space Station Omega based on the scenario and make it to one of the escape pods. Only one man can claim the bounty...so what will you do to make sure it is you?
More info coming...

will the game have a 3d board ?
spape station games are rare this day and if yo said Drakon hat means a random map with rooms. will that game have cards(like itens, events and so) or a action game like heroquest, star quest (space crusade).
btw teaser starts with a pic ;) and not like you advance style the name :D

Wow to be completely honest I had never even heard of this game...I chose Space Station Omega because Space Station Alpha sounded too obvious.
I have to go check that game out now.

I wont give away too much (right now) but will say this...unlike Drakon the playing field size/shape is static. However the board/map changes with every game as the players have the control over the spaces and paths.

As intriguing as this game sounds, I have one major reservation: Your lack of follow through on promises you make, leads me to not trust you Onacara. It's commonly known that you do not do what you say you are going to. If I was to order a game from you, what assurance would I have that you would deliver? On the old trust-o-meter you are ranking very low around here. I would like to see that change. I would like you to earn the trust back Onacara.

Victory Point Games is going to be putting out a space station game in the near future titled Forlorn Hope.
http://victorypointgames.com/details.php?prodId=106
Forlorn Hope is space marines versus aliens. From the description of it it's close to Space Hulk, but no plastic minis. The buzz on Consimworld is that their games are good. I have two of them, Crisis 2020 and Zulus on the Ramparts, and I found them enjoyable. Zulus on the Ramparts is a solitaire game and is very tense.
Perhaps the board from Forlorn Hope could be used by someone who purchases Space Station Omega as well for different options. There was also a game called Sucking Vacuum published by Alien Menace that might be usable for maps. Coolstuff has that one listed as out of stock.

Web site is in progress but won be ready for a few more weeks as we are still working out some details on the game while trying to prep fro TotalCon and tend to our regular jobs and lives. We are going to play the game with some people not involved in the project at Total Con in 3 weeks to get a feel for where the game is at as far as playabilty/enjoyment for others and then will me going full speed 150 mph to get info out there.
We will definitely be doing something on The Geek too, but again I see alot of people talking about games they are making on thee that never see the light of day. Once we have a better clear cut view of when this would be released we can start hyping it full tilt.

(sorry to double post)
On the subject of concept... The game has similar mechanics to Drakon in that the players will be laying the room tiles on the space station grid. However we will be working with hexes instead of squares which leads us to 10s of thousands more combinations. Also we have worked it out so the typical "key/gold" room combination thing associated with Drakon is eliminated. There are also several other game mechanics which bring more strategy into the game as well as a better "screw your neighbor" element than Drakon does.
The other cool thing is we will have at least 3 game play variants with the game and also have enough ideas to put out an expansion set rather quickly if the game takes off.

I have been talking to a friend of mine who is a Sci-Fi writer. He has written several books and is currently writing the scripts for the Farscape comic series and he will most likely be writing the background story for the game.
The prototype is nearly finished...it doesn't have the flashiest artwork but it serves its purpose and the proxies for the mercs and the aliens are pretty sweet and should help everyone involved with the playtesting get a real feel for the game.

Ok so who wants to see a sneak peek?
Here are some shots of some of the components being used in the prototype/playtest game. )Note they are not completed...the little white circles will have symbols on them indicating "Special Abilities" for each tile. The artwork is basic too for now. I have a couple of graphic designers in mind we would like to possibly work with on the final layout of the components though.

I get what its trying to do but I think the image it makes is a bit more of a distraction than it is worth. I showed my 18 year old boy your logo and his first question was, what's that in the middle there Dad, and began to laugh. That was my first thought as well......

The pawn has been redone a few times and YES I know what you are talking about :quarter:
I was originally thinking of putting a crown/cross top on the pawn but didnt want it to look like we were a company that made Chess boards. Of the "standard" game pawns the one is it modeled after has the nicest look...splitting it up to form the 2 R's though has left that "image".

Ok so we got to play test the game a bit with people other than me and my kids. It went very well. The things I thought might be a problem were and I am almost finished with the updates on them which I think will then make it flow better but will add a couple of twists we weren't originally planning on it. The play test also gave us enough ideas for probably 2 expansion sets. :excited:
In the next few weeks we will be reaching out to some of you folks to see if you would be willing to help playtest the game as the more input we get the better the final experience will be for everyone.
Now before anyone sends me a PM asking to be a playtester, we want to first go through the list of people on our list first to see if they are willing to help us out. If we do not get enough of those folks on board we will open it up to everyone interested and then decide who we will be sending copies out to.
Thanks again everyone for all of your support, suggestions and enthusiasm. We really appreciate it and hope you like our game.

I got to test this out at TotalCon last weekend and I have to say that I was impressed. Definitely need to work out a few details that can cause the game to break (people can get stuck), but I think the idea of adding more doors will help. We were also a bit unclear about the rules for entering/leaving the center room. It may speed up the game a lot too if you consider a move then place rule each turn. Definitely worth testing out, but it may be a drastic change.

Not sure we are going to change it..but we might....
If you do my suggestion would be to bring the 2 'R's together to break up the lines with the top of the pawn, and put the 'N' over them. Since this might not be very clear, I created an image that shows what I mean, I hope you don't mind (I wasn't trying to be disrespectful of anyone's work, just trying to be clear with my idea). See end of post for image.
Also, another thought I had was that in some places there is a break between the white lines and in others there is not. I would suggest picking one of these two ways (I'm partial to the black breaks, btw) and being consistent throughout the logo.
Another 'also'... :)
I'm not loving the font used for the 'N' and 'Gaming'. I would go with either a less stylized font (TNR for serif-style, or Verdana for sans) or match the sort of deco look of the 'R's. With apologies to whoever picked the current font, it screams 'Mom & Pop company' to me. Unless that's the image you're trying to project I'd give this some consideration.
A third 'also'... (does this guy ever shut up?)
The spacing of the dots on the dice isn't consistent (as relative to the edge of the dice), I would fix this. And since the rest of the logo has a sort roundy, organic look you might want to round the corners of the dice a little bit as well.
Fourth also... (apparently not!)
Do you really need the dice and cards and pawn? I've been working on a project for Proctor & Gamble recently (specifically for the Tide brand) and it's sort of opened my eyes to a number of branding issues regarding logo design. Look at some classic logos and perhaps you'll see what I mean. The Tide logo with it's multi-colored concentric circles isn't sitting on top of lineart of a washing machine. Classic logos transcend the trappings of their 'genre'.
And finally a question: What holds the hexes together as the map is assembled? I don't see interlocking edges. Do they just sit next to each other or are they held together somehow?
Lastly, good luck with the project!

That was the first thing I thought of when the "phallus" occurred. I think removing the top part combined with that will work better.
Also, another thought I had was that in some places there is a break between the white lines and in others there is not. I would suggest picking one of these two ways (I'm partial to the black breaks, btw) and being consistent throughout the logo. I like the breaks too. The reason they are in some places and not others is because they only occur around the R's. But I think if we put the breaks on the other lines too it may add to the look.
Another 'also'... :)

With apologies to whoever picked the current font, it screams 'Mom & Pop company' to me. Unless that's the image you're trying to project I'd give this some consideration. I actually like the font because the R's themselves are not a font...although I can see your point. We can always play around with other font options
A third 'also'... (does this guy ever shut up?)
The spacing of the dots on the dice isn't consistent (as relative to the edge of the dice), I would fix this. And since the rest of the logo has a sort roundy, organic look you might want to round the corners of the dice a little bit as well. Never noticed the dot spacing. Also while I understand the rounded corners consistency I am not sure how it would look with the 3D image of the dice since the edge facing the "camera" would then change.
Fourth also... (apparently not!)
Do you really need the dice and cards and pawn? I've been working on a project for Proctor & Gamble recently (specifically for the Tide brand) and it's sort of opened my eyes to a number of branding issues regarding logo design. Classic logos transcend the trappings of their 'genre'. YES! The use of the 3 common game components was part of the logo concept as we plan on making both board and card games.
And finally a question: What holds the hexes together as the map is assembled? I don't see interlocking edges. Do they just sit next to each other or are they held together somehow? It is all going to come down to cost. Getting a first game to sell is difficult enough. Adding a bigger price tag to it to cover production costs is another. We do have a few options that we are exploring.
Lastly, good luck with the project!
THANKS!!!!

We wont be out for a little while...but I do recommend you buy Summoner Wars...it is a hell of alot of fun.
All 3 of us at RacNRoll are big fans of the game....seriously. I bought the game initially to support Truth and didn't think I would like it only because card games like this were never my cup of tea. Then I realized that they weren't for me because they were not made like Summoner Wars. The only "bad" thing I can say about it as one of the owners of a fledgling game company is.....I wish we had thought of it first.

I'm not trying to be nosy here so feel free to ignore any questions or comments you don't want to address.
If you don't mind talking about it, I'm curious how a fledgling game company gets its games and name out to the masses. It seems like this would be quite challenging, especially when the passion is for the game, as opposed to the business (this very well might not be correct in this case but I know you guys love games). Do you have a good feel for your marketing model? If marketing isn't one of your principals' core competencies, do you have an industry knowledgeable 3rd party who will do that for you? I personally don't know how game distribution works but it seems like there would be plenty of people at conventions, in the industry, and who frequent this site who would be willing to give advice, should you be looking for it.
Glad to hear the playtesting is going well.
Best of luck!
Onacara
March 3rd, 2010, 10:49 PM
Well like any fledgling company...you have to pound a lot of pavement...talk to as many people as possible...make as many connections as you can. You have to really believe in what it is you are creating and be passionate about it. You have to think outside the box but also stay within reality. Its a delicate balancing act...especially since we all have real jobs and family responsibilities.
When the game goes into actual production we expect our first printing to be relatively small by boardgame standards...but by getting it into the hands of the people who actually move this industry (boardgame fans) we have no doubt that word of mouth will be our biggest ally.
We are not looking to concur the world or topple Settlers of Catan from the top of the board game food chain...but if we can make ourselves a niche and continue to make quality games that we enjoy playing and are proud of then i think that will be just fine with us.

If you are one of our young playtesters, please include contact info for your parents in the email just so we can clear everything through them.

Ok now that SSO is heading to outside play test...I can get back to working on our next project.
In a dark and smokey back room, somewhere in the City of Westport, a rag tag group of criminals have gathered. Sure they had their rap sheets that made them far removed from choir boys, but none of them would ever be considered “Public Enemy No. 1”. Individually they were no more of a risk to the city than any other two-bit criminal…but together they were downright dangerous. For the next 30 days, Westport would experience their biggest crime spree ever, thanks to the men assembled there in that dimly lit “hole in the wall”. They would pool their talents to take as much as they could from the city, letting nothing get in their way. After that...they would never be heard from again.
What could possibly go wrong?

Well like any fledgling company...you have to pound a lot of pavement...talk to as many people as possible...make as many connections as you can. You have to really believe in what it is you are creating and be passionate about it. You have to think outside the box but also stay within reality. Its a delicate balancing act...especially since we all have real jobs and family responsibilities.
When the game goes into actual production we expect our first printing to be relatively small by boardgame standards...but by getting it into the hands of the people who actually move this industry (boardgame fans) we have no doubt that word of mouth will be our biggest ally.
We are not looking to concur {read: conquer} the world or topple Settlers of Catan from the top of the board game food chain...but if we can make ourselves a niche and continue to make quality games that we enjoy playing and are proud of then i {read: I} think that will be just fine with us.
Um, have you gotten an editor for the rulebook yet?
Your criminal co-op game sounds pretty interesting and something we don't see a lot of.

Ok on a serious note...
Playtesting is progressing and no breaks have been found. We will be contracting with the artists doing the final art next week and should be ready to go out to the printers at sometime in June...which will give us a release date at sometime in October.
I will have a complete prototype with me at GenCon for anyone interested in trying the game out.
We have a total of 8 games in various stages of development at this point and while we are working on all of them we will be focusing more of our attention on 2 in particular (1 designed by me and another designed by nyys).
We have 1 other game that is complete that we will have sample printings of in the next month to 6 weeks. This is a very light, fun, family type card based game. We will be using the sample printings to gage interest in the game before going to mass production.

More RnR News...
We have another game that is coming together very nicely...nyys came up with the original concept and layout and then I jumped in with a fresh set of eyes and in no time all the pieces are falling into place. I think naming it is the only "issue" we are having with the design. Maybe we need to have a naming contest? :ponder:
I will have to say that this has been a really fun experience. If you have ever wanted to make a board game (even if you never produce it or sell it) you should do it.
We are by no means experts but are very willing to help any closet designers out there with their own game development. Who knows...your game may be so good that we will partner with you to produce it.
(Definitely need to hit the lottery soon)

Update Sadly Ollie has departed the business due to other time obligations. We still love ya Ollie and you will always be a part of RnR in spirit. The door is open if you ever change your mind.
With Ollie's departure, nyys and I have been discussing if we will press on as a duo or bring in a new partner. Three people is nice for when the 2 of us are dedlocked on an idea/decision...not sure what we are going to do but we are leaving our options open.
Playtesting on SSO is going a little slower than hoped...everyone just semed to get hit with the "real life" at some point over the past couple of months.
On a better note though things are pushing forward on our latest game (still except for the name) and we are looking to have a working prototype together in time for OnacaraCon. :praying:
We are looking into having a ProtoSpiel up in this neck of the woods (New York/New England). If you don't know what ProtoSpiel is...it's a convention for game designers, play testers and would be play testers...where everyone gets to display their creations and have controlled playtesting over a weekend. If we get this going I will let you know.

You work your fingers to the bone day in and day out. At the end of it all you just to try and scrape enough extra cash together to take a well earned vacation. The brochure looked great... you couldn't wait to get on that big beautiful cruise ship so you could relax and be waited on hand and foot. Too bad the ship sank and you are now doing everything you possibly can to live long enough to be rescued in that little lifeboat with the other "lucky" survivors.
This is the game we are currently working on...and it really needs a good title.
If we get a good suggestion and use it we would give you a copy of the game for the idea. (We have several "working titles" for the game but have not settled on any of them)
(This is a cooperative game where you need to work together with your boat mates to make sure you live long enough for the rescue boat to find you.)

Chances are you'll never have an issue with the trademark, especially if sales are low. At such levels, it's simply not worth the big boys' time. However, it's worth mentioning that there still is risk. One of the worst case scenarios would be that you catch lightning in a bottle and sales take off only to be issued a cease and desist order, effectively cutting the legs out from under the game.

The people who made that movie might not own the term "6 Days 7 Nights" but there is enough gray area that they wouldn't necessarily need to to cause you a lot of legal grief. There is enough gray area that I would suggest at least running it past someone with some legal experience. Some things to consider:
1. This (http://cocatalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?v1=25&ti=1,25&Search_Arg=six%20days%20seven%20nights&Search_Code=TALL&CNT=25&PID=TvsUVMTipum5VZOBHnJdP0p-iVVTw&SEQ=20100707090912&SID=1) copyright is for the "Six Days, Seven Nights" press kit. It copyrights text. Now in the world of common sense there should be no issue, let's face it we're talking a 2010 small company boardgame versus a 1998 feature film. The thing is we're in the world of lawyer$ and all it takes is a simple cease and desist order from them for you to now have the burden of either ignoring the order or hiring a lawyer of your own. Now lawyer$ are sometimes necessary, but the best strategy with lawyer$ is to avoid having to hire them if possible.
2. This (http://cocatalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?v1=26&ti=1,26&SEQ=20100707092523&Search_Arg=six%20days%20seven%20nights&Search_Code=TALL&CNT=25&PID=xlpvWiPgrlTxumhvfYFXRJoCEzpi-&SID=1) copyright list visual materials. So you'll want to make sure none of the art is too similar to whatever visual materials is listed. I'm sure that one of the copyrights also lists the script, in which you'd want to be sure none of the events of the game mirror what happens in the movie too closely.
3. "Don't Mess with the Mouse" Disney is famous for going after copyright infringement. Disney also made "Six Days, Seven Nights". This alone may be the strongest case for at least consulting a lawyer.
4. There are 33 copyrights that I could find associated with "Six Days, Seven Nights". I did a brief search and couldn't find any trademarks, but that certainly doesn't mean there aren't any. However, if they went to all the work to secure these, there is definitely risk, albeit very small, involved.
In conclusion, I'm no legal expert by any means, I only mention this because I want you guys to succeed and success for small business sometimes means avoiding unnecessary legal costs. The chances of any legal issues are small but given the fact that Disney is on the other end, it might be worth asking someone in the know now while it's still easy to change things.

On another note...in order to keep RnR and our games moving forward I am taking a leap of faith and giving up my day job.
