Just wondering if anyone else on this forum listens to Metal; this can be any sub-genre, because its so spread out. I think this would be an awesome way of keeping in touch with fellow Metalheads, and talking about anything relative to the scene.

Thanks for looking, guys!

Here's what I listen to:

Black Metal, Thrash Metal, Grindcore and Doom Metal.

Here are a few examples of bands I listen to:

Dark Funeral, Behexen, Amorphis, Rotting Christ, Anthrax, Exciter, Katatonia, Candlemass, Hollenthon, Darkthrone, Deeds of Flesh and Kreator.

I love metal! My xbox 360 has last.fm and I typed in christmas metal for the tag radio station and came up with some very cool bands and tunes.

Slipknot, Static X, Mudvayne, Danzig, Green Jelly, Type O Negative, Pantera to name a few.

It's funny - in elementary school, all I liked was Classical music. In 7th grade, I was introduced to Guitar Hero III. That was my "gateway" sample of Rock music in general. Once I played Tom Morello's solo on Bulls on Parade, I was hooked. I started loving Metal even more after playing Black Sunshine by White Zombie and The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden.

I'm now the semi-owner of an electric guitar with an amp, and own a Wah pedal, Whammy pedal, and several accesories. I love Metal music. And most other genres of music as well.

I used to be into metal. It's just not the same now (both metal and my tastes). I used to be into Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Queensr˙che, and a few others. There are a few newer bands that I dig, but for the most part I listen to other stuff. I'm really getting into blues and instrumental rock guitarists. I like listening to Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, among others.

Metal is definitely one of my all time favorite genres. I'm not entirely sure which bands would be classified as pure metal, but my favorites (many already listed) are:
Slipknot
Mudvayne
Three Days Grace
Papa Roach
Disturbed
Godsmack
Saliva
Trapt
Seether
Pillar
Demon Hunter
and of course Skillet.
I'm also getting more into classic metal bands like Queensryche, Dio, and Def Leppard.
Bands like TDG and Skillet I've seen labeled as both metal and hard rock.
But yeah, metal is incredible. If you ask me, there's no comparison to rap or pop. I like some of that music, but those two sounds require very little talent to make, and so rappers and pop stars are literally a dime-a-dozen (I realize many artists who do are talented, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they used that talent to make the music). If all you have to do to get a hit song and get rich and famous is sing, "soldier boy up in the OHHHHHHH" over and over again, then I don't think there is much left to say.

It's easy to compare crappy rap and pop acts with quality metal bands, but there are plenty of bad metal bands out there too.

True, but I think I'd still take a bad metal band over a bad rap or pop artist any day(especially a rapper who has an enormous ego to boot). Granted band members can be huge morons, but hopefully they keep that out of their music.

I was wondering how long it would take for this thread to actually go anywhere . . .

Lately I've been really into Children of Bodom, 3 Inches of Blood, Fintroll, Arch Enemy, and Bolt Thrower. Though I think that list may change once I've had time to check out some of Atmospro's picks . . . .

For sure. And Corey Taylor has such an amazing voice with such a wide range of styles. He can roar so awesomely, that you can't help but pump your fists in the air, yet he can also convey totally different emotions on songs like Snuff.

I would recommend that anyone interested in this genre of music seek out and watch 3 documentary films on the subject.

First two are by Canadian Metalhead and anthropologist Sam Dunn.

Metal: A Head Banger's Journey (http://www.metalhistory.com/) - "Sam turns his academic eye a little closer to home and embarks on an epic journey into the heart and soul of heavy metal music."

Global Metal (http://www.globalmetalfilm.com/global-metal-01.html) - "directors Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn set out to discover how the West’s most maligned musical genre – heavy metal – has impacted the world’s cultures beyond Europe and North America."

Heavy Metal in Baghdad (http://www.heavymetalinbaghdad.com/) - "'is a documentary about the first & ONLY heavy metal band in Iraq (at least,so far). That band is/was Acrassicauda (Latin for 'The Black Scorpion'),a band that wants nothing more than to rock out. If they existed in America,Europe,Asia,or even parts of Africa,no problem. The fact that the band got their start prior to the American invasion of Iraq only managed to make things worse. The band had to deal with ultra strict Islamic oppression (song lyrics had to be pro Sadam & pro Islam, shows had to end as early as seven o'clock,no women allowed at performances & a host of other related b.s.)." More than just a movie about one band struggle to make the music they love it's an opening documentary about culture clash and war.

No offense but most of those bands aren't even metal. Megadeth, Lamb of God and Children of Bodom are about the only ones I'de say were metal. I love System of a Down but they have a few metal parts but overall are rock n roll.

I hear where you're coming from here, but Demon Hunter isn't that lame.

Granted you don't hear a Christian metal band with the traditional angry lyrics that are associated with metal, but they still have some good serious songs. The difference is that while mainstream metal bands have a general message of hopelessness, anger, and frustration, bands like Demon Hunter try to show that there is an answer to all those issues.

There definitely are very lame Christian bands though that try to be too hardcore. Christian Side Hug group, anyone? ;)

Demon Hunter's problem is that they have a very generic sound that's becoming more and more dated. Granted they have at least one good song (personally I like Infected) but the vast majority of their music is nothing special at all.

I'm not sure if they sound dated because of new bands popping up and copying the style, or if Demon Hunter themselves are one of the copy-cat bands.

Either way, I still think they're a pretty good group. :|

Living Sacrifice (by far my favorite metal group)
Sleeping Giant
Mortification (Old School Metal!)
Tourniquet
A Hill to Die Upon
Haste the Day
Klank (He's more industrial metal)
Circle of Dust (They are also more industrial)
Demon Hunter
Alice Cooper (I know he's not metal, he's more garage rock as of late, but he's my favorite above and beyond everything!!)

I started out with the classic thrash metal:
Metallica / Megadeth / Slayer '80s

then moved to the grunge,
Pearl Jam / Alice N Chains/ Nirvana / Soundgarden / STP '90s

then into Nu metal the 2000s
Korn / Marylin Manson / Deftones / Sevendust / Static X / Mudvayne / Tool / Incubus / System of a Down / Chevelle

slightly dabbled in EMO like
Taproot / Thrice / From Autumn to Ashes / Glassjaw / The Used / Thursday / Blindside / Poison the Well

now into New Nu Wave metal and sludge metal 2010s like
Mastodon / Baroness / High On Fire / Dethklok / As I Lay Dying / Chimirea / Gojira / Isis / Lamb of God / The Sword / Everytime I Die

and sprinkle in some Queens of the Stone Age, The Black Keys / The White Stripes / The Dead Weather ...

Metal is a huge genre of music, maybe the largest and most diverse. While I listen to a lot of difference music (blue, classical, rock) there is nothing like metal. On one end of the spectrum we have AOR, Hard Rock and Glam to Black, Death and Extreme on the other and everything in between. Metal can be Avante-garde arty (Mr. Bungle , Meshuggah), Gothic Operatic (Nightwish, Elis), Symphonic (Therion, Amorphis, Symphony X), Progressive (Dream Theatre, Pain of Salvation) to down right brutal Death metal (Morbid Angel, Deicide) Not all metal is a guy screaming in a leather jacket in fact some is the most complicatedly arranged music you will find anywhere, many orchestras have trouble playing it. Metal is the combination of blues rhythms with jazz tempos with classical arrangements. The best metal singers (think Halford, Dio, Dickinson) operate like opera singers coming in over the top of the music and projecting out. Generally metal is written in the devil's key as it was coin in the middle ages, the tritone that seductive sexual key.

Even among stalwart metal fans there are few that like all types of metal. I personally listen to a lot of Symphonic, Progressive, Neo-classical and Gothic metal with some Power and Speed thrown in for good measure. There are some types of metal I detest, Nu-metal and Rap metal being 2 of them.

Most importantly metal stands for something, Metal is about making a statement. Subject matter can be thing as long as it stands for something. And yes many bands lyrical content is banal and without thought but when you get into the better groups no other genre of music can discuss any the topic so vividly, frankly and directly as metal. Nothing is less satisfying to me than that bubble gum garbage that plays daily on the radio.

Oh by the way nothing will hurt your ear or speaker more than beat box thumpy thump of most dance, electronic and rap music play with the low end bass.

I understand that metal founders like Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osborne were and are very much into the Devil music scene, but I don't think that makes it impossible for other bands to have more positive content. I do agree to a point that Christian metal seems contradictory, but really I think those bands are just trying to use an awesome sound to appeal to and reach Christians who like metal. I really don't see anything wrong with that.
However, that being said if I wan't to hear God's messages, metal is about the last place I'd look. It makes much more sense to me for a band like As I Lay Dying (one of my all time favorite bands in the world) whose members are Christian, but they don't advertise themselves as a Christian band and are, in fact, listed on many metal websites including metalbladerecords.com.
Obviously, as Christians, they don't sing about themes like suicide and murder, but in fact (at least on their newest album) focus on not only personal issues, but also issues with modern society. They also do so in a way that manages to stick to the traditional metal theme of anger and aggression, while at the same time having a positive message.

This isn't true at all. Tony Iommi the founder and leader of Black Sabbath is a devout Catholic always has been. The band was originally named Earth and preform as rock-blues-jazz until Tony started writing music in tritone and detuning guitars. The songs were fantasy horror and social commentary based. Birmingham, UK was a great place to live in the 60's. The occult stuff came from the fans and media as result of Tony always wearing a large cross necklace where every he went (still does), so like all good showmen the band picked up on this and ran with it placing huge (15') crosses on stage. To spice the show up some stage guy got the idea of lighting it on fire and the legend grew.

Hmmm, I never knew that. Thanks for the correction. I suppose a lot of bands just do stuff like that for the publicity and shock factor, not because they actually get into the stuff. I know Slipknot is a good example of that.
However, I don't think that changes the fact that there are some pretty satanical bands out there.

I understand that metal founders like Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osborne were and are very much into the Devil music scene, but I don't think that makes it impossible for other bands to have more positive content.

Your right on both accounts, two of biggest ones are Alice Cooper (Vincent Fumier) and Ted Nugent. Both portrait complete wild men while on stage but are very reserved gentlemen in different ways. Uncle Teddy's a family guy with 4 children is straight as an arrow (no drugs, no alcohol). His political leanings are another story. Vincent is a reserved family man who listen to mostly classical music and think the hole satanic metal thing is a big joke. In a video interview he talks about meeting some of the Norwegian satanic bands while on tour there and how the whole demonic persona is a facade. When meeting him they all became fan boy geeks, asking for autograph, pictures him and stuff. so yes images is really important to some of these bands. As for how many are really satanic probably not more than a hand full. Even King Diamond is not what he seems.

When I was a kid my favorite band was Black Sabbath (I got into them around 1980,) but I never cared for any of the contemporary metal bands over the years until I heard my first Dream Theater album (Images & Words.) If anyone here hasn't heard of them I would strongly suggest giving them a listen or two. In my opinion they pretty much founded the genre known as Progressive Metal. ;)

I just stumbled onto this thread. I'm a big-time metalhead. I'm also the vocalist in a local sludge-doom metal band. If you want to check it out, go to www.myspace.com/whocarriesthelantern (http://www.myspace.com/whocarriesthelantern)

I've been into metal since I was 5 (27 now) when my cousin introduced me to Metallica. I've been playing in metal bands since I was 16. In fact, my sig has a link to one of my former bands in which I wrote a song about Heroscape. I listen to practically every sub-genre, sub-category of metal. The only one that I don't really care for is nu-metal.

Some of my absolute favorite metal bands are Amorphis, Nevermore, Type O Negative, Katatonia, and Opeth. If anyone ever wants to talk shop, count me in...

I can't stand Dream Theater. All their songs are way to long.

Dream Theater is an awesome band. I wouldn't say that any of their songs are too long, they're just as long as they need to be. And generally that's longer than a three-and-a-half minute pop song. Personally I respect them all the more because they're not afraid to do an entire album to seven to twenty minute long songs.

I just don't have the patience to listen to them. I don't think it helps when I listen to 2 minute Slayer songs

If you want a long song, try, "At War With Satan" by Venom.
