Can you traffic with the restless dead without being counted among their number?

Rumors abound that Cyprien Esenwein amasses fiendish hordes to supplant his potency in Valhalla. The Lord of Annellintia seeks artifacts that will wield incontestable dominance over the undead races of Feylund and afar. Only through trial and mettle can the Miasma of Morindan be lanced from Valhalla. An alliance struck, each general sends forth its most defiant heroes and regiments; their aim to vanquish the monster’s bitter touch before he summons an unstoppable undead battalion. The quest comes with a sinister prospect; that those who overcome Essenwien and his minions can even gain terrifying powers. But with such unearthly might also comes temptation, even oblivion.

An Expedition to Castle Esenwein provides players with the chance to simulate the gothic adventure campaigns found in Dungeons and Dragons’ Ravenloft; monsters devour bodies and souls; “haunted heroes” fight unspeakable entities while at once facing their inner demons. Most of all, the landscape itself takes the form of its Dark Lord’s twisted mind.

This campaign consists of three scenarios for three players. Two players will draft or field pre-made armies; the third player will play the role of Cyprien Esenwein and his undead legion. At the end of the third scenario, victory will be determined by how many enemy units each player destroys; additional points will also be rewarded for capturing Treasure Glyphs, taking control of unique heroes and wielding terrifying powers.

As stated, the world of Dungeons and Dragons’ Ravenloft features Dark Lords who imbue their domains with frightening features. To mirror this characteristic of the campaign setting, Expedition to Castle Esenwein includes new terrain features by using previously released expansion tiles and pieces. Players will not only have to overcome Cyprien Esenwein and his unspeakable minions; Eldritch Slate (Lava Field Tile), Sanguine Tarn (Lava Tile) and Clutching Reed (Underbrush) to impede Player One and Player Two’s victory. Details concerning each modified terrain feature are described in each scenario.

Special Thanks to especially Ch1cano for allowing me to bowdlerize his "Hall" and "Prison" maps for two of the scenarios; my rationale being that using re-constituted, well-known battlefields would allay concerns regarding the playability of the maps. I'd also like to show gratitude to Hoomba for his Ember Canyon (wherever he may now be) - it just seems remiss to speak ill of the dead considering the campaign theme.
