View Full Version : Virtualscape Online beta available

Zzzzz
November 14th, 2009, 06:24 PM
After some hard nights, virtualscape online is available for everbody (Virtualscape 1.070).
First thing to say is that this is a beta so there are some knowing problems and some missing features but I hope this is enought to get fun time.
For them wich don't know, I didn't get Hasbro authorisation so I change code to use a dedicated server at home and then if Hasbro say that I must stop, I can stop all virtualscape online.

The know missing feature or bug :
- No more than wave 1 (in next release you will be able to add all card)
- When you finish to play this is better to quit and relaunch application before to create nother game (some stability problems)
- Some params of some army card are wrong
- No capability to display or remove glyph.
- I will need to change dedicated server code so sometime connection will not work (but currently game continu to work because dedicated server is used only for connection)
- No help for moving distance (in next release)

now, some explanation (in my bad english) to play online :
.Two players or more can play together online with virtualscape if they are connected to internet (you can also play alone).
.One player need to create the game and the other just need to join the game.

1) *** Create a game *** :
- Load the map (as usually with virtualscape) then select menu item Play/Create a game.
- Enter your name, ip address (address of your router if you got one. in this case you can connect to http://www.whatismyip.com to get your ip) (in case of router, you need to make a redirection of TCP of your port 1399 by defaut to your computer)
- Enter the game name (not use now), the language (just an information for them which want connect to your game)
- Select game mode
- Enter point number (in basic mode this is the number of army card and in expert mode, this is the point to get army card)
- Enter max player
- Enter welcome message
- Enter port
- Then click create the game
- Waiting for other connected players and then click start game
2) *** Join a game *** :
- Select menu item Play/Join a game
- Enter your name, select the game in the list then click Join the game
- Waiting than the creator launch the game.

- select army in the window. (if no window appear this is because your opponent choose an army)
- When all the army are choose for everyone use icone to make your action.

a) Clic place figure icone to place a figure of one of your army. then select army in new window then select a position on the map.
b) Clic remove figure to remove a figure from the map then clic on the figure on the map. (use when you get no more life point for exemple)
c) Clic move figure to move a figure then clic on figure on the map then select new position of the figure. (you can use wheel mouse to rotate figure)
d) Clic attack to make an attack then select attack figure then select defense figures. When all defense figure are selected use next action.
e) Clic attack dice to launch dice then select number of attack dice (you can force result but opponent will know that you force result)
f) Clic defense dice to defend from an attack then select number of defense dice (you can force result but opponent will know that you force result)
g) use 20 faces die to get a number from 1 to 20.
h) use next turn button to remove all attack or defense dice and say to your aopponent that this is his turn to play.
i) use contextual menu item on army card to set marker, set life point, show markers or reset marker for next turn.

I will let you discover other button (use escape to go to the end of a replay).

Have fun and of course as usually don't forget to give me feedback (don't forget that this is a beta)

PS : for them wich want create a game, don't forget to forward protocol TCP on port 1399 (by default) on your router if you get it. to do that, see your router manual or a specialist :-) (but not me because I tried to do that with one of you during several hours without success. Sorry)

Use 1399 like Zzzzz said. ;)

If you have a router, though, you will need to set up a static LAN IP and set it to port forward it to your computer instead of something else.

EDIT: This snazzy website (http://portforward.com/) can help you with that.

Connection problems were the issue I was having with him earlier. I could connect to Zzzzz just fine, he couldn't connect to me. If you have similar problems, just wait it out, he said that he knew how to fix it, it would just take a bit more coding on his part.

What he's done so far is remarkable, so I'm fine with waiting a little longer. ;)

You need to unzip and then run the exe from the extract directory.

Well, I recently downloaded (not to mention extracted) the newest version of VS, and I'm having the same exact issue. The moment I press the "Join a game" button, it instantly brings up a window saying that the program has stopped. I'd also like to mention that my computer runs on Windows Vista, in case it might be part of the problem.

I hope this can be fixed, I've been looking forward to trying this out for quite a while.

I run Vista too, and haven't had any problems. Zzzzz also has said to close the program and restart if you want to play a new game.

How do you select a map

You need to open a map that you've built.

Have not downloaded yet, but Zzzz, once you get the bugs out, send this to Truth. I bet that you could make this big. He will probaly put this on the homepage, and then you will have a massive base for it.

Also, when I tried to download the English version, it came out in French.

I don't know about which bug you are speaking ? If this is for texture of wave 1, I don't know when this will be fix.
If you get french version perhap's this is because you don't unzip file on a directory and run from this directory (perhap's that you run it directly from zip file).

Would probably not be the best idea since I'm not sure this 'playing Heroscape online for free' is completely kosher.

It's fine, it just threw us off a bit!

And is there any way to open up the Wave 1 figures for the online play? I know that they don't have textures yet, but it would be helpful to have commons so we could proxy figures and hold more effective games online. But, RotV limitations are challenging and fun, too. ;)

(Also, unless I'm mistaken, it appears that Tornak from the Wave 1 heroes pack is missing from the list of figures that can be placed on the map. If it's in-progres stuff, never mind.)

In next release, you will be able to add figure that you want (just need a picture and fill a text file) so you will be able to create the wave 1 and other. But Figure will be displayed as a flat picture in the 3D view always in front of you if you turn around (this is call bilboarding).
I know that some figure of wave 1 are missing. This is because I was unable to read file of that figure. I don't know why.
I don't know when a new release will be available because I'm very busy.
The Virtualscape online is not use by scapers (I don't know if this is because it's too hard to open a port, bad application or unuseful feature) so I give some efforts to another project now but I continu to create new release (just take more time).

One thing I want in the next release is both players being able to draft and place alternating turns. If this is allaready implemented, I must have missed it on the match by myself.
How I managed to fix the firewall issue, was to click on one of those icons in the bar with the windows(sorry that if I am not being to clear)

I had a board loaded, I created a game, and put in my own IP address, and kept the port at 1399. I waited for my friend to log on and join my game, but when he did I could not see him in my list of connected players. and all he saw was a blue screen, and the same thing happened when i tried to join his game. How have you guys gotten around this problem?

This seems like if your port (1399) was not open (on your router and on your firewall if you got it).

Hey, great start to the online game! I'll have to get someone else to download and playtest though.

Hey, I know it's half a self-promotion, but I made a spreadsheet of all the special powers by type (thread (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=28689)& download (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/downloads.php?do=file&id=2040)). One of the reasons I created this was thinking if you programmed special powers into a computer-based game like VirtualScape, instead of hard-coding all the powers, it would be better if you could have some sort of table of powers where you would only have to code for each type, and then as long as there was not a new TYPE of power (which there is a couple in each wave), you would not need to update code, only update the table. I know my spreadsheet is not complete for this task, but it is a start.

Random question, but I don't suppose that perhaps there should be a feature added for "linking" multiple VS maps together in such a way that they all can be printed to one PDF document (one after another)? It'd be really nice to be able to do that for making dungeons, because your dungeon build instructions would end up looking like the build instructions in the back of the D&D set's rulebook, all in one convenient file. Just a thought.

I'm hoping to create a new way to play HeroScape online with 3D maps. I'd really like to be able to import all the virtualscape maps into my game, but the files are all binary and messy. Doesn't anyone know if they could possibly let me know how to convert them or can someone get in touch with the original VirtualScape guy to see if he can clue me in? That would be awesome!

Yes, I've made a Virtualscape exporter, so I've got the file format decoded and can write some documentation for you. There are actually several formats depending on the version of Virtualscape used, but they're all reasonable similar.

I'm also working on my own online way to play Heroscape. I kind of paused for a while after StayOutOfTrees announced his effort, but since that has stalled a bit, I'm back at it--maybe we should team up!
