View Full Version : Heroscape App

Firstly, I apologize if this is the wrong forum. It doesn't really fit with any of the other topics, but it is not off topic.
I am good at coding in HTML and am just starting to learn java. I have some software that allows you to create an iPhone/iPod Touch app in HTML and then add things to make it work with the iPhone/iPod Touch. I thought it would be cool to have a resource with Heroscape information, even when internet is not available.
I would like to know if people are interested in this. Also would I be able to use direct references to Heroscape if 1. I put the thing about it being WOTC's property. 2. If it is a free app in the app store.
And if you are interested in this please tell me what you would like to see in the app.
Update: After a very long delay... I got the website up!
Go to: http://hsapp.tk/
Check it out!
This is "beta testing" before I release the app iPhone/iPod Touch
Post any, bugs, issues, things you want to see added, things you would like removed, ideas, questions, or comments here.
Update: The app is in Beta testing for Jailbroken devices.
If you would like to try the app out, PM me. I will give you the download link. Post any, bugs, issues, things you want to see added, things you would like removed, ideas, questions, or comments here.

This is one of the best ideas I've seen in a long time! Definitely do this!
Some thing I may suggest to put in the app--
A complete list of the rules,
A complete list of units--with cost,
A complete list of the Glyphs and they're effects,
and, if you could do it,
A few map instructions for common BoV maps like Turret Rocks, Embattled Fen, and Highways and Dieways.
Whether you can or can't fit all of this into an app, I'd still say that any kind of resource for HeroScape in the app store is brilliant! Most definitely, +rep!

Sounds like a good idea to me!
There are a lot of rules and unit stat resources on BoardGameGeek. I would think if it were not appropriate to publicize that information BGG would not allow those sorts of things to be uploaded - at least not for very long. So, I think you're okay.

Sounds cool HiTech126!
I am always interested in the probabilities in heroscape. You could include sisypus' tables (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=16263), and/or some functions from the probability calculator (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=25738). The calculator is in python, but you could easily re-write it in java or whatever.
Another idea is an army builder. Let the user say how many points, then let them choose the units from a list, and the app keeps track of the points.

Ok thanks for the ideas. I have ran into a little problem with the software I was using, so I will probably not get it done by NHSD which had been my goal. I still fully plan on doing this, but it may take a little longer than expected. In the meantime continue to post things you would like to see included

Basically everything that has been posted is great! These are all great ideas, and whether we can get it by NHSD or not is no problem (at least not for me). Just having the opportunity to have it at all is awesome.

I think an app like this (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/downloads.php?do=file&id=1333) would be nice.

(Just a suggestion, of course)

I'm excited. I have been searching the app store hoping that someone would have made some kind of heroscape app but to no avail. Now I have something to look forward too.
My only suggestion, keep it simple.
Maybe start with an army builder and collection tracker of some kind. Maybe add a favorite maps sort of thing later.

If you can browse the internet on your iPhone, isn't this about the only "app" that you need: http://heroscape.glasq.com/home.xhtml

It could be, but because this is an app it will be offline, quicker, and hopefully have more resources.

It is a great idea.
Things I'd like to see in order of importance to me:
A read out of each card. (Maybe in a playing card fashion because it would fit and look nicer.)
The Probability Calculator (posted before)
A way to save armies that you've thought of.
These (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=8390) (with permission of course).
Maybe a way to roll HS dice in the app? It would save some table space sometimes. I'd use it when I build a map on the floor.
An in app mmorpg with over 1000 quests. (start programming :p)

Of course you can use by charts. It is the next logical step from a laminated 8.5X11
I mentioned in this (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=27269) thread that I would love to see a dice roller. I have one in excel, but it only works on palm pilots that we have at work.

ProtoFury
October 16th, 2009, 05:04 AM
I just want to see this done. Even if it was simply a dice roller with synergy charts, it would be cool to have nonetheless. Just make sure you implement the copyright tagline for Hasbro, so's you can't get yourself sued. (Although with a free app, I'm not sure if that could even happen. Better safe than sorry, I suppose.)
And I may be wrong fells, but it looks like an overwhelming public outcry for the futuristc-style display. ;)

Ok my current list of features is the following:
Army cards- shows a trading card form of all cards listed by General
Synergy charts- thanks to Ryougabot
Probability charts- with the owners permission
rules- full set of rules for all sets
Glyphs- list of all glyphs and all there information
Maps- Building steps with some of the most popular maps
I also plan on contacting someone with an army builder and a dice roller to ask for a form of it to integrate into the app.

Is there a free dice rolling app on the app store currently? If it is free you might be able to approach the guy and ask for the code for the dice roller.
About the army builder, what did you have in mind? Like, select units from a list and it adds them and their point values up for you?

BoV maps, definitely. Would it be possible for you to make a kind of template so that we could just kind of do the work for you, then you just copy and paste?
That way we could potentially get loads of maps without having you do tons of work. Of course, you probably have file size in mind, so we limit it to like one map suggestion per person?

December 3rd, 2009, 03:15 PM
I think the best would be by General. When I think of Syvarris, the first thing I think of is Ullar, not S. Then within the General organization, alphabetical organization.
Also, as far as the order of generals go, I would probably say Jandar, Utgar, Einar, Ullar, Vydar, Aquilla. Not exactly sure why, it just sounds appropriate.

That would be sort of cool as when selecting which general a "Color wheel" could pop up, and you simply select which one you would like to view.
Too bad Vydar isn't orange (it would look bad with robots/agents, but then at least we'd have all the colors.)

But, since it is technically MS3, and the DnD waves will be numbered 11 and 12, you could probably just continue and put them in as you woul with any other units.

I think you just add the DnD stuff in with everything else. Maybe you can flag them as being from the DnD collection?
Is the card info in a database? It could be nice if one wanted to search for all tricky personalities, or small height figures, squads with champion bonding, etc. and then click thru the cards that match.

The easy way is to go to zamzar.com (http://www.zamzar.com/). The site allows you to convert pdf files to bmp, jpg, png, and most other image file types. I'm not sure if this matters but each page in the document is a separate image.

For a dice rolling application I wonder if you couldn't just code in a random image generation type thing, instanced as many times as the amount of dice you're rolling. I am not much of a programmer but I recall random number generation being very simple, so if you could have it produce an image based on which random number is generated from 1-6 (have one blank, two shields, three skulls) and just repeat this instance as many times as the amount of dice needed, I couldn't see it being too awful complicated.
I wish I had an Iphone so I could try this app out when it's finished!

Hey, I know it's half a self-promotion, but I made a spreadsheet of all the special powers by type (thread (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=28689)& download (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/downloads.php?do=file&id=2040)). One of the reasons I created this was thinking if you programmed special powers into a computer-based game like VirtualScape, instead of hard-coding all the powers, it would be better if you could have some sort of table of powers where you would only have to code for each type, and then as long as there was not a new TYPE of power (which there is a couple in each wave), you would not need to update code, only update the table. I know my spreadsheet is not complete for this task, but it is a start.
As for your app, whatever you decide it to do, it should have a Hersoscape feel - maybe different color themes for each general if your that ambitions. Any work you put in making an iPhone app will be appreciated though.

First off, I wanna say +rep for all your work. I am very interested in getting such an app. I would even be willing to pay a buck or two for it.
A couple suggestions are:
- Make it possible for future update. You don't have to throw every feature into the first version. Use a marketing strategy like Pocket God or Doodle Jump and update every few weeks with a new feature.
- Make sure the Card images are zoomable. It would stink to have an iPod app, where all the images were too large to read the fonts on.
- Dice rolling should be a fairly simple coding thing, because my friend has just started learning to code and has done that already. Basically just make it choose a number between 1-6 and assign each number a symbol (i.e. 1 blank, 2 shields and 3 skulls) And then make a separate section where it chooses just any number between 1-20. (But I am not really into coding so I don't know how hard that would be.)

Ok finally got some news about the app. My life's been really hectic lately but I found some time to work on the app.
Bad News:
Jay Cain was creating the dice roller for me but do to some legal advisement from Mythacle he can not release it to me to use.
Ok this is really bad news and will take a minute to explain. I designed the app I HTML/CSS and used a packager to convert it to Objective-C for me. I was able to create a developer account on apple but when I went to upload the app it said you have to buy a $100 1-year developer's license to publish apps. Even free ones. So I am looking at having someone with a developer's License already upload it for me. I don't have the extra cash to buy one right this minute but I might could soon but I would have to make the app paid if I did. Will upload the app as a website until I can publish it as an app.
Good News:
The app is done
I can upload it as a website for now

The Allies seemed a little messed up. I thought it was everybody on Utgar, but this says Einar and Jandar vs Ullar and Aquilla vs Utgar and Vydar.
The Dumutef Guard isn't in the correct alphabetical order.
Any reason the Fortress Door is with Jandar?
On the maps, it would be advantageous to put the requirements somewhere where you don't have to load each map to see them - prehaps in the title?
Overall, AWESOME! So excited for this to debut.

The only thing I could think of adding would be seperate sections for DnD and Marvel. But, for the initial release, just Classic is fine. I would be much happier with an earlier release date and Marvel and DnD as updates, than a release date pushed back by a few weeks but containing everything.
Another thing that would be cool would be a link to this site, however you would probably need truth's permission for that.
EDIT: I just hought of something else. Maybe an option to organize each card by price?

I was thinking of adding a "useful sites" section, I can't imagine why truth would have a problem with free advertising, though I'll make sure to ask first.
Since D&D scape is classic scape as I understand it I was just going to mix that in with the rest. I don't have plans for marvel scape but if it is badly wanted I will add it later on.

June 2nd, 2010, 05:31 PM
Speaking of copyright, is the idea of SELLING an app that has heroscape rules, images, gameplay legal? Sorry for reopening up a can of worms that never got sifted through fully. As far as I am aware, VirtuualScape was the only "heroscape" software that was for sale at any time and I am not sure if they ever got slack from hasbro for it but would hate to see this app be released only to have HiTech get legal ramifications from it and it be taken down. Although, truth has the potential to make money from this site's advertisers and there are thousands of copyright violations in the gallery on this site, so I dunno...
HiTech126
June 2nd, 2010, 05:35 PM
I could be wrong, but what I think is that they would be fine with the selling of this app because all it could do is promote the buying of Heroscape. Now if I was creating an online version of the Heroscape game they might have some problems because that would discourage people from buying the game because they could play it online and save money by not buying it.

The problem with an online version of scape is that then no one would buy the figures. Why buy figures when you have a computer game that has all the same figures? The game would naturally shift to all online.

I have both good news and bad news.
The bad news is that my Hackintosh computer is no longer working. This means that I cannot publish it to the app store.
The good news is that the app is in Beta stage. It is packaged and working, but a bit slow. Unfortunately you can only use it if your iDevice is Jailbroken.
Since jailbreaking is now officially legal I would recommend anyone who is not Jailbroken should be. If you need help I have done it many times.
Anyways back to the app. The app is in Beta Phase, a bit slow and has a few issues. Once you have the app, drag it into the apps section of iTunes and sync. I will have a video showing it off soon.
If you would like to try the app out, PM me. I will give you the download link. Please let me know about any problems or features you would like added here.

What does jailbroken mean?

Jailbreaking is pretty much bypassing the sofftware to alow more freedom. Ipods software is very restricting. I still need to jailbreak mine. Just google it and you will get the stuff needed to jailbreak it.

If you have never jailbroken before, go to www.jailbreakme.com on your iDevice and slide the slider and it will jailbreak for you. This is the simplest and easiest way.

Yep that's what I did.
It works on everything but 4.0.2 Firmware so you might have to downgrade back to 4.0.
Anyway great app!
Suggestions:
A way to navigate back to home screen of the app after clicking on one of the pages.
It also appears that some of images are cut of on the sides (Maybe 2/5 of the image) and that some images are to large read so a zoom function would be greatly appreciated.
Fantastic App so far, thanks for all the work you put into this HiTech!

What I have found interesting is that it seems like most of the people who asked for the app have only became interested in it recently, and the people who were interested in it from the beginning haven't asked for it.

Meh, Ive been lurking in this thread since the beginning.
By the way, I sent the link to a few freinds who have jailbroken ipods; so far they love it!
We've been using the maps section a lot, its great looking up a pre made map on your ipod instead of printing one out from you comp.:)

I'd ask for it but I don't have an iPhone yet. When I get one this will definately be the first app I get. Good job by the way.

I would definitely get this but my iPod isn't jailbroken, and I don't want to take all the time to jailbreak it and get everything that I already have reset after jailbreaking.

Go to jailbreakme.com on your ipod.
Slide the bar that reads "slide to jailbreak"
Give it about 5 minutes.
Your ipod will be jailbroken, and you will keep all of your apps/music/ect

Oh ok, thanks. I thought that I would have to mess around with settings and such.

Yeah, the current jailbreak is dead easy, and doesn't require any messing around with stuff. It won't work if you updated to 4.0.2 though, you need to have 4.0.1 or earlier.

He would have to restore his ipod though. Allthough it wouldn't take to long to do that I don't know if it's ideal.

That's probably what I'll do, or just wait untill it becomes an official app.

There is a good chance of it becoming an offical app soon but I won't say more until I know for sure.
I am removing the Heroscape logo at the top of every page and replacing it with a better one. Any suggestions on what I should use?

A hex I guess, but why do you have to remove it? Copyright?

No not the official logo, the one at the top of every page that says heroscape. It's animated and slows the app down quite a bit.

How about a contest and a poll? Maybe get some of the big graphic designers like h3xtrip.

Assuming this is still the updated app: http://hsapp.tk/
This is going to sound harsh, so I apologize ahead of time. But I feel that instead of being nice, being honest is the best way to give feedback on something like this.
Between the animated gif logo, not using a legible type on the cards (or even just a type based version of the cards), and just porting in scans of the rulebook, this thing looks poor. Being a web designer, often times, I find that the trouble with just having programmers build apps is that the user isn't taken into consideration; instead it's built only to be purely functional. The problem with only making it functional instead of making it stellar is the same as a chef only making edible food. Yep you can eat it, but you're not going to enjoy it.
My suggestions:
1. Make it a free app (should be anyways since it doesn't do anything outside of providing you with information that you can find on this website in addition to a dice roller).
2. Then add in the actual heroscape logos/branding with a disclaimer.
3. Bring in the rules booklets with OCR, then convert to text. I'd rather scroll through text than huge images.
4. Bring in images of the actual cards, but also provide a text only version. Like above, but give people options.
Future release ideas (which might make you charge money for it, which would make you get rid of #2):
1. Have it so that you can plug in your collection and build your own maps. :)
2. Team building option so that you can plug in a point value and try to create your custom team. Would be even more awesome if it was built so that you can build your army, then just slide left and right through your cards and place markers on them to eliminate the need for cards. :)
Just my two cents as I feel that a Heroscape app would be an awesome venture for the community.
