View Full Version : Madison, WI NHSD event
Queenmojo
September 21st, 2009, 11:02 AM
When:
October 17th from Noon to 5pm-ish. I'll be there around 11ish to start set up.
Where:
Misty Mountain
4672 Cottage Grove Road
Madison, WI 53716
608-441-0312
http://www.mistymountaingames.com/madison/?page_id=4 (http://www.mistymountaingames.com/madison/?page_id=4)
Format:
5 round swiss tournament. Rounds will be 50 minutes of kill-em all.
Armies:
600 point armies with the "Jotun rule" for Marvel, meaning that Venom, Spiderman, Red Skull, and Captain America are legal. Just to mix things up a little bit, let's say your army has to include units from at least 3 different generals, Marvel will count as a general. 24 hex starting zones, repaints are fine, if they are of exclusives make sure you bring a printed out card.
What to Bring:
Your army, dice, wound markers, and order markers. There will also be a $5 dollar entry fee to cover prize costs or you can just bring a prize for the prize table. Please let me know ahead of time if you are going to bring a prize, I hope to have something for everyone and need to know how much to get.
Maps:
Highways and Dieways (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/downloads.php?do=file&id=234)
Fire Isles (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/downloads.php?do=file&id=241)
Ticalla Sunrise (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/downloads.php?do=file&id=606)
Depending on how big this gets, I'm going to need help with maps. I will bring 2x Highways and Dieways, 1x Fire Isles, and 2x Ticalla Sunrise. Let me know if you will be able to help.
Glyphs:
There will be two glyphs for each map:
Erland (Summoning) and Dagmar (Initiative +8 ) for Highways and Dieways
Astrid (Attack +1) and Valda (Move +2) for Fire Isles
Ulaniva (Unique Attack +1) and Wannok (Wound) for Ticalla Sunrise
Glyphs will be placed where shown on the maps, however they will be placed randomly. So Ulaniva and Wannok on Ticalla Sunrise may be flip flopped and not what is shown on the map. Glyphs will be flipped or just placed face up before play begins.
Scoring:
Your score will be determined by adding your remaining points to the points of units you destroyed of your opponents. Whole card scoring and not figure specific; if any 4 10th Reg die that counts as a card.
Example: You have remaining 175 points worth of figures and destroyed 595 points worth of your opponents figures, your score would be 770.
Prizes:
Skull Mountain (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=27009&page=4) by Krusni
$25 HouseMouse gift certificate
3x Agent Skahen
SoTM Master Set
RoTV Master Set
Snipers and Vipers
Grut Orcs
The IX Roman Legion
Heroes of Bleakwoode
4x Braves and Brawlers
4x Dwarves and Repulsors
4x Dividers and Defenders
4x Heroes of the Moon
2x $15 Misty Mountain gift certificates
Since at this point there are more prizes than there are attendees, prizes will be claimed one at a time according to your placement. Then after everyone gets one pick, the process will repeat for a second prize until all prizes are claimed. That's right, I don't want to take any of this stuff home! It's all for you guys. I know some of us already have extensive Heroscape collections, if you do not want to take a second pick in order to let someone lower in placement get a second pick, I would not be offended. Thanks Yodaking for reminding me to add this.
Dice Rolling Etiquette
Not to be a stickler about this, but I just wanted to set some rules so we are all on the same page what to do if a dice falls on the floor and what not. Dice that fall on the floor, land on the map, or are stacked after rolling will cause a complete re-roll of all combat dice for the action that the dice were being rolled for. I would advise bringing a container or tower to roll in, the tables are really bouncy at Misty Mountain, however there is a lot of rolling space so I am not going to require it.
Pictures
I will have a camera at the event to take pictures. If I do not end up playing I will take pictures of the event. If I do end up playing, I will take pictures when I can, but I will leave my camera on a table when I am playing, feel free to grab it and snap a few pictures if your game gets over early. Also feel free to bring your own camera and snap your own pictures, I just ask that you post some of them when the tournament is over, to try to promote this.
Attendance:
I'm going to cap this at 24 (probably ambitious) but I don't want this to get too carried away.

I'm almost positive I can make it, but it's kinda hard to look ahead for my school schedule. If I do make it, I'd probably bring one or two people, also.

Thanks, you shouldn't feel any pressure to try to scrape something together, it looks like we will have plenty of maps based on what Harlax and Krusni have offered to bring. Thanks for the offer though :)
Lord Pyre: I'll put you +1 for now, since you seem pretty sure you can make it. Let me know if this is not cool.

I asked off work, I just need to check school now. This is for sure the date, then? No chance of changing?
And if you need, I can probably take a Fire Isles and Ticalla Sunrise. I don't like lugging the pieces around, but I could if you're still short.
And this is a Saturday? I thought it was a Sunday, like last year! That'll work better, since I don't have to find a replacement organist at church again. :p

Is there anything I should know about bringing a spectator outside of no table talk and such?

Played a practice game this evening on one of the tourney maps, and my friend and I had a question about LOS in the "competitive" setting of the NHSD event.
When we play, we assume 360 visibility from the target point shown on a unit's card... thus, facing is only important in so far as it might slightly adjust your hit-zone cross-section from certain directions. I seem to recall though that some folks play with units being required to actually face in the direction they are sighting. (Turn your back to someone, and you can't attack them.)
Is there any global guideline for line of sight that we'll be using on gameday?

Okay, so we just barely made prize support and Rychean has been contacted, so things are looking good there. I just don't know what we will get yet.
I've been away for the past couple days (professors always seem to schedule exams for the same days), so I just updated the attendance for the past few days. Let me know if I messed something up.
I'll be bringing a spectator, maybe a +1 if we get some practice in. But there's still a chance work will keep me from this event though.

I have no problem with spectators as long as they are courteous to those playing. The more the merrier :)

As per the advanced FAQ (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=432) assume 360 visibility for single spaced figures, facing does not matter. However facing does matter for double spaced figures, but remember you are able to flip double spaced figures anytime during their movement. Also remeber that during your turn you are able to perform in hex adjusments on any or all of your figures. I hope this answered your question. I will have a copy of the advanced FAQ on hand and will be willing to help with any rules disputes that come up.

We generally don't wear name tags. This event will be small enough that everyone's name should circulate. We will generally use our screen names for determining who plays who, like: Krusni will play Scapemaster on Fire Isles or something like that.

We did sign up for prize support, it was just after the last update was made to the first post of the prize support thread. According to Rychean, it's supposed to be sent out today. I have not gotten any information about what we will get yet, hopefully later today, but I did get confirmation that we will get prize support.

I have not heard from Rychean the contents of our prize support from Heroscapers. The prizes I purchased for this event are listed in the first post of the thread.
As for what to expect the day of the tournament. I will have score sheets for you to fill in with your army details and to keep track of your wins and losses as the tournament progresses. For the first round you will be paired up against a random opponent and play one game lasting 50 minutes or unitl one player has no figures remaining, whichever comes first. After this you will be paired up with an opponent who has a similar win/loss record as you and you will play. This will continue for a total of 5 matches. Then the overall records will be determined and prizes will be selected accordingly.

That would be very helpful. I am glad you are willing bring so much terrain.
That would put us at 9 total maps, for 18 people...Krusni could you bring 1 of each map? That would give us enough for 24, just in case we have some walkins.
Also are glyphs going to be an issue for you guys? I know we had trouble in the past, so I tried to really limit the glyphs this time. Let me know if they will be and I will print some off.
Thank you so much both of you. I know it is a burden to bring so much terrain, but this event wouldn't be possible without you. I really appreciate it.

Okay, I got pm about prize support from Rychean and it looks like we'll be getting:
2 sets of wave 9
3x Agent Skahen
$25 gift certificate from HouseMouse
Which is awesome, we'll have a ton of stuff on the prize table (lots of wave 9). I'm also going to pick up a couple $15 gift cards from Misty Mountain for the table, just as a little thank you to them for letting us play there. I'll update the first post with this info.

Agent Skahen is a promotional figure released in 2008 for special events. She is a repaint of one of the Nakita Agents. She is named after the forum member Bunjee.
You can find her army card here: http://www.heroscapers.com/community/gallery/files/2/agentskahen_664200_original.jpg
Oh, I guess I should mention this:
I can bring parts for 1 Ticalla Sunrise and 1 of EITHER Highways/Dieways OR Fire Isles.
Two quick questions:
#1: In the event of a loss, does the loser still get X points for the amount of points he killed?
#2: Given the lack of HS events, does the 'use 3 generals' rule need to be used? I'm fine with it either way. After all, I have a whole set of Wave 9 here that I haven't used at all yet.
One Final note:

Thanks to a timely CSI delivery, I can definitely bring one copy of Highways and Dieways.
Thanks for the offer, but it looks like we should have maps taken care of.
Yes, we have prize support! Also, me and Scapemaster got a friend to come with us, please add him to the list.
Great!
Oh, I guess I should mention this:
I can bring parts for 1 Ticalla Sunrise and 1 of EITHER Highways/Dieways OR Fire Isles.
Thanks for the offer on the maps, but it looks like between what Krusni and Harlax are willing to bring, we should be covered.
#1: In the event of a loss, does the loser still get X points for the amount of points he killed?
Yes. You would mark a loss and then however many you points you got. Example: When time is called, you have 120 points worth of figures remaining and your opponent has 210 points remaining. You would have 510 points for that match (assuming your opponent started with 600 points 600-210=390+120=510)<- the math is not meant to insult your intelligence, I just wanted to be clear
#2: Given the lack of HS events, does the 'use 3 generals' rule need to be used? I'm fine with it either way. After all, I have a whole set of Wave 9 here that I haven't used at all yet.
Yes, I wanted to force a little variety in army making decisions without being overly bearing with limitations to your army. I feel this is more than fair and considering the past two tournaments in Madison focused on armies from the same general, that focusing on multi-general armies was a good direction to go.
One Final note:
With 20 small expansions, 2 Master sets, 3 gift cards, some custom terrain AND 3 skahen... Woah. Everyone's getting something.
I'm really happy about this. I didn't want anyone to walk away empty handed.

Alrighty then.
I've been tossing around some army ideas.
In reality, how common are Q9/10, Deathreavers, and Glads/Blasts these days?
Given how I see a lot of them on the competitive armies board I'm considering fielding 2 squads of Repulsors.
Would it be worth it?

Given just a bit of effort the three general rule hardly pinches at all. Now if you added something like a minimum of 75 points for each general that would pinch (not advocating a change at this point, believe me!).
As for the reavers, there were some very effective counter armies at Gen Con that did not contain a single Repulser.

Exactly my intent, just make you think a little, but not be overbearing with limitations.

I like the rules for army building.
I had to undergo a slightly different thinking process. What kind of builds does this eliminate or hinder? What known strong builds does this leave left? What would be the best against those builds? Does that fit within the boundaries? Procede into normal criteria.
I liked what I picked out, but I'm hoping it gets through the mail here by tomarrow so I have time to practice with it. I suspose as long as it's here for Saturday I'll be ok.

Heh, TurtleKing was tossing around the idea for buying Zombies for a while, but when NHSD came around, he HAD to have them, so technically, he ordered the "for" the tournament.
On a related note, these before-mentioned zombies were ordered Satruday night TWO WEEKS ago. The confirmed date of arrival is supposed to be this Friday. I just hope the USPS (no, not UPS) can deliver according to schedule for ONCE. :pray:

Two other thoughts. We had a lot of younger players today. I juniors bracket might be good next time.
There were a lot of young players. Personally I'd like a junior's bracket because I'm not a kid person and some don't seem to be quite up to playing in tournaments. Your child probably can play you well, but I'd don't really think a kid under 10 can handle playing a stranger. I don't like to give reminders, count the number of dice they roll, and have line of sight disputes I can't win. I could call over a parent or the TD, but I don't want people to judge me or hurt the kid's feelings. I'm going for a serious game and I think some of the kids I played/observed aren't well-versed enough or are too worried about winning vs. having an honest, fair, and fun game. I think a juniors bracket with an adult helping out would help them become better players, and keep our games more straightforward.
One thing I wouldn't mind is playing a parent and child. If your kid really likes to play, play as a team. Let them pick out the army, you place the OM's, let them take the turns for their favorite unit, you take the turns for the rest- something like that.
More of a tangent than I wanted to go on, but that was the one part of my experience that kind of mellowed it for me.

About the juniors bracket, this was largely my fault. I was under the impression that a lot of younger players were going to be attending and meant to suggest dividing into two different brackets at the start of the tournament, but we got behind and it slipped my mind.
Yeah and 600 points was a bit much, just trying to make the Marvel figures a little more playable, hence the Captain America being everywhere, I guess.
Lastly, I did a little bit of digging on the mindshackle question and posted a thread about it (no response yet) and from what I've found the decision made for counting points remaining would be to add the mindshackled figure to your remaining points. So Jesusfreak13 should have had 180 pts remaining for that game and however many points for the previous game. However in this scoring format that does make for a double point swing (aka 360 points in the Q9 case), so in future tournaments I will not use this scoring format to prevent this from happening again.
ElvenEnvy
October 18th, 2009, 01:07 AM
That Q9 Mindshackle Points case doesn't really have a good answer it's almost like the 2000 election. Popular vote or electorals? Trying to find a consensus among us was probably the best thing to do as said election was decided by the Supreme Court.
This kind of thing happens everywhere at every level.
Krusni
October 18th, 2009, 01:13 AM
I still feel that this isn't that hard of a dilema to figure out. Score goes as this, points of units remaining(180 for q9). then points for units destroyed(q9 is still alive, not destroyed). Therefore you gain 180 for remaining figures and that is it. If you and your opponent had a 600 point army to start in the end it would be 780 and 420. The back fire to mindshackle would then be that you control that figure and they become part of your army. Therefore if the person who originally had that figure proceeds to destroy it after it has been mindshackled they would get the points for destroying it. but that may just be another debate
Krusni

Then again the backfire thing only works if once you control the figure it is actually considered part of your army. I am not sure on this, so i may be very wrong. Might not be much of a back fire since itstill washes out points from you remaining army since you origianlly had the figure.

I think the answer collectively arrived at (points for the mind-slave only once -- but the win to the player with a figure left) was entirely reasonable.

so in future tournaments I will not use this scoring format to prevent this from happening again.
The system used at GenCon employs a "strength of schedule" calculation as a tie breaker. You are rewarded for playing opponets who play well in other games. The disadvantage of that system is if you play someone who drops out at a later point, you are screwed. That happened to me at GenCon.
The disadvantage of the system we used is that you are rewarded for playing weak opponents and punished for playing strong oppenents. The other disadvantage is that it punishes armies who rely on attrition. The advantage is it is simple to manage.
I think our decision on the mindshackle issue was entirely reasonable. I don't know that I would make a change just because of something that is likely to be a one time occurence.

I'll look into strength of schedule scoring and think about for the future. I like the idea of being rewarded for playing stonger players and some of my favorite armies rely on attrition ;)
Speaking of the future, me and my sister were talking on the way home about what to do about scheduling another event. I would be more than willing to organize another tournament, this was a lot of fun. However I doubt I will be able to afford to fill a prize table for sometime, especially without prize support. So how does it sound if the entry fee is a prize for the prize table? Just to give a timeframe, the earliest I will be able to schedule another event would be late January/early February. School has to come first until grad school applications go out in January.
Otherwise if you're itching for another tournament, it looks Jexik is planning something in the Chicago area for Nov. 21st (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=26847). Jexik is a really cool guy and I'm planning on heading down there. I've got to take some study breaks ;)

One example of a strength of schedule scoring I know is to combine the records of your opponents and use that as the tiebreaker.
Example using my play this weekend:
I would have had my 2-3 record and a SoS record of 17-8. (4-1 from Harlax, 8-2 from playing Chris twice, 3-2 from Nukatha, and 2-3 from Laurel.)
You still need a good way to calculate points, so you can determine the winner of matches that go to time. Plus the possibilities out there that people may tie records and SoS records.
It probably would be a good idea to look more into scoring varients and see if anything jumps out as a good idea to you.

Turtleking: But I DID take out Cyprien and Raelin, something that apparently not all of your opponents can claim.
My friend ( Jacob H.) gave me the Brave/Brawler pack that he won. Full Steamroller baby!!!
I also grabbed the dwarves/repulsors on the second go-around of prizes (last common squad left on the table!). I probably don't need 'em, but the robots and dwarves are just.. awesome.
Also, There was ONE Snipers/Vipers pack on the store shelves at Misty. I bought that one. Just a great day.

I think the turn his Migol killed Cap, Cap had both height and Raelin. Essentially it was a deathwalker roll vs. Migol boosted by Finn with his Deadly Strike.

Then why did you kill Finn? (I did too, which is why he killed Cyprien.)
Wouldn't Migol have three attack, against nine defense? That just stinks, especially if that caused you to lose...
ElvenEnvy
October 18th, 2009, 09:35 PM
I actually made a concious choice not to kill Finn, Migol got the adjacency boost that I completely spaced on to get the three dice. While having Cap summon Migol to take care of him right away seemed like a good idea, getting him spaces away from Finn was not a good idea. In hindsight Raelin would have been the better choice to summon, but hindsights always 20/20.
Migol had two skulls with his deadly strike making four and I couldn't match or excede it with his nine that turn. I don't know if it caused me to loose, but an extra turn or two with the Cap couldn't have hurt my chances.

Don't forget, that was my original plan, to drop Migol on the glyph, then summon Raelin, at which point I would have 3 deadly attack due to Finn's Aura. If you had summoned her instead of Migol, I would have tried to kill her in my next turn.

Not my Raelin, your Raelin. With any luck Cap could have gotten rid of her in 2 turns. The glyph would have been gone, Migol would have had to have walked over possibly roadblocked by Cap or Raelin, I would have already had points on the board, I could have used shield throw on Raelin, Migol, and Finn rather than wasting excess skulls from Cap's normal attack on One Shield Defense.
If Cap hadn't done so well against Laurel's Migol, I would have done it and some of these positive things might have happened. Then again if Cap whiffed on Raelin you would have had defensive support for your guys the rest of the game gratis.

I note that there was only one army with Cap in the top 3.
There were three Cap armies in the top half of the standings and six in the bottom half.
