MegaSilver’s Half-Map Contest
I had gotten the idea to for this contest when my brother and I were ready to play Heroscape and we couldn’t decide who would build the map. So we came up with the idea that we could both create the map at the same time by us building one side of the map each, then combining them. What we came up with was a very awesome battlefield, and we did the very same thing to several more battlefields.
I wanted to introduce this half-map idea to the Heroscapers community, and I thought the best way for it to gain attention would to run a contest.
Thanks to Lordraidor for allowing me to do this contest!
So, here it is, my Half-Map contest!
Entry Information
Due Date: 11-15-09 (May Change)
Winners: 2, one by me and one by poll.
Prizes: $25 gift card to WGHs.com (http://www.wargamersheadquarters.com/category/1-heroscape/) for both.
1 Entry Per PersonSubmission Rules
Must be a VirtualScape, .pdf. file.
Must have a VirtualScape picture somewhere, whether on your entry post or on the file itself, preferably both.
On the download section page of your half-map, in the information section, you must have the following sentence in some form or another or it will not be entered: This is a half-map. A half-map can only be use with another half-map. Both half-maps must be connected together at the designated connector zones, as close the center of the connector zones as possible, to be used. If the zones are not of the same side of the hex (corner or side of hex), then place them together as close a possible.
4. Your map must now be able to connect to one of the examples below, but not both. This is for simplicity only.
Must have 3 zones on the half-map:
400-600 point, 24-hex starting zone.
1,000 point, 48-hex starting zone (use 24-hex starting zone in conjunction).
Connector Zone (must have at least two conjoined connector zones)
Make sure to label which color represents which zone.Map Guidelines
Sets: What may be used:1 RotV or 1 SotM
Combine at most three of the following, with only one of each used:
1 RttFF, 1 FotA, 1 TT, 1 VW, 1 TJ
Connector Zones: At least two connector zones must be adjacent to each other. I would prefer you have enough to connect the entire side of the map together, instead of at a narrow point(s), that way your map is easier to play on, but if you can pull off a nice map with the restrictions, then it is fine with me. (To explain more, What I mean is each dot of the zone. You know the starting zones dots that show where each figures starts? Each spot is shown with a dot. Well, for the connector zones, you should have at least two of those dots adjacent to each other.)
Partiality: I will admit right now that I am partial to maps that mix two terrain types together than those found in nature. For example, mixing lava, swamp, and snow together. But I am not partial to castle-heavy maps. I don’t mind a few castle maps (I would actually like to see some), but if everyone has one I will most likely drone them all out. However, if you are using the castle set for reason (build a mountain, i.e., then I will be fine with several. The same could go to lava/snow/swamp mixes also, but I am not sure. Look at what everyone else has done, and try not to emulate too closely.
Design: I don’t care how it is designed, basically. It only has to look nice, and be fairly playable. There is not a restriction on the size of shape of the connector zones, so long most figures can move across them.Contest Checklist
This is what I am going to be looking for on your half-maps and what you need to make sure you cover.
Uniqueness: The stranger and more unique your half-map is, the more I’ll like it. Mixing sets will earn you more points. But be weary of others doing it, too. Normal-looking maps are fine, too, but I like seeing twist in map design.
Using Appropriate Sets: Do not have more than one of each set. You don’t have to have to use one of each; in fact you don’t have to use any, other than a master set.
Having All Three Zones: On your map you must have all three zones labeled and color coded.
Have Sentence: On the download page you must have the following sentences in some form or anther:This is a half-map. A half-map can only be use with another half-map. Both half-maps must be connected together at the designated connector zones, as close the center of the connector zones as possible, to be used. If the zones are not of the same side of the hex (corner or side of hex), then place them together as close a possible.
This is necessary so that someone will not try to use the map alone, since it wouldn’t function properly.
Once the contest is over, I will take all of the entrants’ maps and more them to The Half-Map Thread. There other half-maps can be created and added, and later on we can have a nice map thread! (maybe like the BoV and BoM threads?) We’ll have to wait and see. So, enter your half-map and let this contest begin!
If you have any questions or comments, post them here!

I think I will try this.
wouldn't some maps come out to be extremely unfair? It seems like one person would build a 30-story castle, and another would build the plains of flatness.
Also, how many entries per person?

Can you show an example of this? It is confusing me. If you put two zones adjacent, wouldn't it be just one zone. Then you'd still need a second zone, which when you put it adjacent it becomes one zone again. Catch 22?

Sorry, 1 entry per person.
Well, those that build unfair ones will most likely not win. Do what you feel is fair.

What I mean is each dot of the zone. You know the starting zones dots that show where each figures starts? Each spot is shown with a dot. Well, for the connector zones, you should have at least two of those dots adjacent to each other.
For example, say this is your starting zone, and each dot shows where to place your figures:
............
............
At the other end of your map, the connector zones can form a straight line:
...........
Or, if you allow your map to have sections jut out, at least two have to be adjacent to each other so that a double-space figure can stand there:
___ _
..
Does that answer your question? Glad to have explained.

When I first started playing HeroScape, this was exactly how my friend Paul and I would play. I would take all my terrain to his house and we would each build a half a map.
It can be estremely unfair - but wicked fun at the same time. We would also play that that you could place your figures anywhere within your half of the map. We knew nothing about multiple commons or symmetric maps, and we each only had the RotV master set and one or two blister packs.
I remember building a perch for Syvarris out of the one hex pieces that was about 12 hexes high. I placed him there to start. Sniper indeed.
Kudos for the contest and the memories.
Good luck.

I actually already have my maps finished. :P
I think they turned out nicely. Of course, half of the 48 hex start zone is on the highest height on the board, but at least part of it is lava field and the rest of the 48 hexes are on Level 1 and 0.
Should have a low graphics cell phone picture of it by tomorrow...
Edit: Nevermind. Just figured out what the 48 hexes was for... This is what I get for reading it half-asleep last night... :p

Well, I know that I have very little time to make maps on my own, and I assumed it may be the same for others. Plus, many people here may what to playtest thier maps to give them a better chance to win. So it seems alright to me to allow plenty of time to run the contest. (It will also take me three weeks to get the money together for the winners.)
So, no need for the criticism unless it is a positive one and has a meaning.;) Unless of course you are trying to make a joke of it, and it backfired in your face.;)

Let me get this straight. A few questions here. Sorry if it seems repetitive.
You can have the connector zones anywhere on the map?
Connector zones do not have to be continuous?
There is no limit on how many connector zones you have?
Connector zones to not have to be in a straight line?
Connector zones can circle the map if we want them too?
Connector zones have to be marked with a different color start zone dot?
Do we have to use a 24 hex tile as the normal start zone?
What do you mean by (use 24-hex starting zone in conjunction) refering to the 48 hex 1000pt start zone?
Are you allowing split start zones?

Let me get this straight. A few questions here. Sorry if it seems repetitive.
First off, thanks for the questions. Apparently I didn't make myself clear.
You can have the connector zones anywhere on the map?
Yes and no. It has to be on the side of the map, to show where to connect the maps together. I cannot be anywhere. For this contest, it needs to be set up like most start zones-- on one side only.
Connector zones do not have to be continuous?
Only if the side of the map you are wanting the connector zone is straight. If it juts out anywhere on that side, the farthest side(s) will be the connector zones.
There is no limit on how many connector zones you have?
No, use as many as it takes to cover the side of the map you choose.
Connector zones to not have to be in a straight line?
No, not if the side of the map is not straight, then the farthest out is the connector zone.
Connector zones can circle the map if we want them too?
Never, at least for the contest. Only one side can be your connector zone.
Connector zones have to be marked with a different color start zone dot?
Dots, not dot. But yes, so that someone does not confuse them with the start zone.
Do we have to use a 24 hex tile as the normal start zone?
Yes, like any map.
What do you mean by (use 24-hex starting zone in conjunction) refering to the 48 hex 1000pt start zone?
Example would be best here: Say your 24-hex start zone is green. To represent your 48-hex start zone, make another 24-hex start zone next to the green, except red. The 48-hex zone is the green and red zone together.
Are you allowing split start zones?
Yeah, I guess so. But have them close to one another, not far apart.
I hope that answers your questions.

Not to be mean, but their are a few problems....
1. You are going to have to choose one to enter.;) Sorry.
2. You can only have one set of connector zones, not two. The one with the bridge would only have a dot at the farthest point. Most likely you will have to remove the bridge itself. And you will need to remove the blue zone on the lava map.
Other than that, I think it is an good entry.

MegaSilverHuh? I could only use one? Ugh. (I thought we were supposed to make two halves...)
Oh well. Just a few minor areas I need to change for the lava map to make it work.
BTW, the blue start space was to represent there was a swamp hex under the overhang. Nothing special.
Unless you were referring to the water. I probably won't remove it all, because that would make it a little less balanced in availability of terrain, but I would probably only make a one hex line around it, not the big pool.

I meant the blue connector zones on the water in the lava half-map. The section of it that leads to the normal terrain will have to be removed, since it comes down too far for the map.
I have now added a rule that your maps should connect to the examples I have posted, for simplicity.

That's a heart-warming half-map! Exactly what I am talking about! The start zones may be a little problematic, but the lava will kick them off.
Good job! +rep!

Hey MegaSilver I've been looking around and I can't seem to find a detailed explaination on how to put my map on the site. I'm not very computer savy and it would be awesome if you posted a detailed step by post on how to do it the way you want. Hopefully I'm asking a question that might (if it updates the first post) will incourage more people join the compitition.

You are allowed to hold it over my head until I pay up the prize. If you are not happy about it, PM me and we may be able to work out a deal. But please do not let this deter you from entering the contest!:)

I guess this is the first entry?? I suppose some people want to hold out until the last possible moment to avoid being copied or stealing ideas and such. Perhaps others aren't sure how to balance out half a map, but hey this is a whole new style of map design I don't think any real flaws can be offically accounted for yet. So here goes. Maybe this will spark some new ideas. I think that what this contest is about anyway right.:D
PS: I think MS wanted entries to be posted the thread to make any them official.

SuperSonic, yours is now offically second since you have posted a PDF file for me to look at the build.;) Just to let you know.
As to the download page, you forgot this:
This is a half-map. A half-map can only be use with another half-map. Both half-maps must be connected together at the designated connector zones, as close the center of the connector zones as possible, to be used. If the zones are not of the same side of the hex (corner or side of hex), then place them together as close a possible.
(Download page must have this, remember?;))
The map looks good, too, other than that. (In terms of building.)

Okay, I've made a map called "Fire Towers." It uses 1 RotV, 1 VW, 1 RttFF, and 1 FotA. I only have the Virtualscape File right now, but I'll have the PDF and picture up here by Sunday.
Here's the Vscape File: http://www.mediafire.com/?odyjunvdfno
Here's the PDF: http://www.mediafire.com/?ydoimnzjnat
http://i794.photobucket.com/albums/yy226/PFscaper/New%20Map%20Ideas/rednaxs2.jpg
The picture is slightly incorrect, as far as the 48-hex start zone goes, but the PDF and Vscape file are correct. I would get another picture, but my Virtualscape will not let me do so (I can't even view it in 3D).
The red zone marks the 24-hex start zone. The blue and red zone marks the 48-hex start zone. The green zone represents the connector zone.

To put start zone/connector zones in, click on the tab that says Start, and you can add different colored dots to the map. Label which dots apply to which part, connector or start zones.
To name it, click on Configuartion, then Map Parameters. From there, you can add the title, the quote, the author, and more. To upload, join a site like Mediafire and upload it. Also, remember to get a pic.

Haff-Ahva Mountain
http://i794.photobucket.com/albums/yy226/PFscaper/New%20Map%20Ideas/Half-Map1.jpg
PDF Instructions (http://www.mediafire.com/?diwn2ornyg2)
VirtualScape File (http://www.mediafire.com/?yqzj2w0zm4j)
Once I finally got it finished, I realized that my first version was going to have issues connecting with other maps--as in, a straight-down, four level drop once connected to the other half-map. I've smoothed it out now, for a better look when grouped up, and I like this new verion even better. Hopefully you guys feel similarly.
(I put that half-map tagline in the PDF, since I'm still waiting on that Contributor satus.)
And also, there is a glyph in the map (which you can ignore if it's not within the rules--I didn't know). You can't see it in the image because, as I realized after posting it, the glyph is completely obscured by one of the RttFF trees. It sits on a level-1 space directly in front of the height on the peak--quite vulnerable to ranged height from many angles. One also has to waste time getting through one (or two, depending on how intellgently you move your figures) water tile to get to it.
Enjoy!
And for anyone that cares about my warped sense of humor--
In case you didn't catch my little joke with the name:
Haff-Ahva Mountain = "Half of a mountain" ;)

Why thank you, kind sir.
I've been on a bilateral symmetry kick lately, I don't know why. It seems that's what I like to pump out every since I nailed down the way to make 24-hexes symmetrical by adding a 7-hex and two 1-hexes. I think, on a more subconscious level, it's also the challenge in making maps with bilateral symmetry, more than the actual maps themselves.
Nothing's ever set in stone. I quite like your submission, as well as Warlord Alpha's map. I think everybody in here's gonna have a run for their money. (Literally...)

Ok thats it so far, alot of good stuff. May the Best Map Win!
First, good idea, Darkmage! I'll update the first post to show these fellows. In a moment I will check them to see if they match qualifications.
Second, the deadline in midnight tomorrow, not tonight.;)
At first glance, they are seem good, but as I said I'm going to do a more forough (Sp?) check soon.

Really sorry to say this, but I don't believe that map is allowed for the contest. The connector zone has to be in a straight line. By adding another expansion, though, you should be able to make the connector zone straight.
Actually, it can be entered, if That Guy uses only the five farthest purple/blue zones, and leaves out the rest.
I stand corrected (I'm sitting right now, but you know what I mean). Sorry if I confused you that guy.
(I hope you know what I mean. It's the purple zones that form the most straight, but broken line.)
As my math teacher says, "All lines are straight." ;)
And thanks for the kind words Proto. They'll comfort me when I hear about you $25 purchase at WGHQ.

Hope nobody minds I figured I'd try to line up all the entries thus far. Although if this thing ends at midnight tonight that's plenty of time for more arrivals. I tried to list them in the order of appearance.

I have did a quick review of the maps. Most meet the specs.
Rednax, you forgot to tell which color zone represents what. Very important.;)
TurtleKing, your map will not let me view it. Not sure why. It says I don't have permission. Do you know why?
Other than that, specs are met. Next is to see how to help, if that's fine with everyone?
May the Best Map Win!

I lol'd
Good map either way though. I was gonna call mine something else but I decided Solitary worked because, you know, the map is sad and lonely because it needs the other half.
Hope nobody minds I figured I'd try to line up all the entries thus far.
I mind. How dare you try to make things nice and convenient? You make me sick. ;)
I mean, c'mon, seriously Darkmage, seriously?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! MY PROCRASTINATION IS INCOMPLETE! I left this until the last minute on purpose....but noooooo, you have to go and ruin it with your "extra day" nonsense....
...you and Darkmage BOTH make me sick now...
Nothing's ever set in stone. I quite like your submission, as well as Warlord Alpha's map. I think everybody in here's gonna have a run for their money. (Literally...)
Yesssss, I get recognition! Although to be honest, as soon as you entered I was like "crap, competition will be rough." And I thought that before I even looked at your map!
Part of me wants to go and make a symmetrical version of my entry. I really like the way mine came out. It even has a bunch of DLs! :grouphug:
I am debating throwing some ladders in there though. Part of me really wants to, but the other part of me doesn't want to start messing with what I have. With the jungle terrain all over the place part of me feels that the ladders won't really be necessary, but on the other hand it is still quite a climb, an unprotected climb....

Which is a nice segue into a joke I've been wanting to make on here for a while but never hav found the right place to:
If they began making androids in South Korea, could we call them Seoulborgs?

That was painful. I tried laughing and it hurt too much.

True, true. Somebody should make a connector or two for those instances, just because they would be useful to have. It would be kind of cool in a way, because it would put the two halves of the map on an angle to one another.
edit: Ok, I went and made a sample one
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/WarlordAlpha/Heroscape/connector.png
I made it out of a bunch of two-hexers here because a lot of us probably have a bunch of spare wave tiles floating around, so you could just use those to make a wedge like the one above.
