So my buddy BWS2K and I made the trek from New Hampshire to South Shore Boston for the Heroscapers throwdown. It was awesome to meet people face to face that I really only know by avatars (Jim looks exactly like his avatar in real life. It's creepy.) Thanks Pilgrim and OPrime for putting this on. It is kind of a hike for us, but we would like to try it again sometime.

My army was happily named Clifford and his Big Red Army. It was made up of the following:
Brunak
Crixus
Raelin
Marro Warriors
Me-Burq-Sa

I drafted this particular army for a couple of reasons.
1) Common squads are teh sux. Actually, I wanted to see if I could create a tournament worthy army using all uniques. The first iteration of the army had Johnny "Shotgun" Sullivan in the place of the Marros, making it an all hero army, but at the last minute the Marros took his spot (he is still sulking in the back of the Heroscape box).
2) Braxis. I expected to see Braxis a lot at the tourney. I didn't see her once. If she was there, she would have eaten through a squad heavy army. My army was relitively immune to that.
3) anti Big-Nasty armies. Charos and the like. Brunak and Crixus should be able to double team and take down any big nasty out there. My final game they did double team charos and take him down taking only a couple wounds in return. This was a big point swing.
4) Weenie Hordes. Brunak is the anti weenie figure, and I'm surprised that he doesn't get played more often. Vipers can't penetrate his thick hide (especially with Raelin guarding his back) and Blood Hungry can kill tons of orcs, vipers, agents, whatever happens to be standing next to him.
5) Anti-Range. Brunak and Crixus soak a ton of damage. It is impossible to shoot them down before they get to where they are going. Brunak never failed to earn his points back in a game, except for the incident with the Sentinels in game #2, where he was eliminated by some atrociously bad rolling, and didn't have any markers on him anyways.

The Games
The tourney was set up into 4 games, with a final match if it came down to it (it didn't). It was swiss style on random maps (if there was a method to determining what map you set up on, I didn't see it).

Battle 1
Beauties and the Beasties
The first battle I played was against curseyoukhan on map J (I don't have the picture yet). His army was made up of 2 Gorillinator squads, as well as the Krav Maga and the Nikita Agents. The map was flatish, with a gentle sloping hill in the center probably about 4 high. On the outskirts were two roads with towers breaking up LOS. The apes were going to be a problem, but Brunak could munch through them with Blood Hungry, negating their Tough ability. My standard first turn play I used throughout the entire tourney, with marker 1 going on Raelin 2 Brunak and 3 Me-Burq-Sa. Khan had the first marker on the Nakita Agents and the rest on the Gorillas. Raelin moved up to the close side of the hill, giving cover to the general advance. Brunak carried Crixus up the center and started swatting monkeys (or possibly only one. I don't remember exactly). The monkeys and Agents swarmed in, taking shots at Brunak and eventually finding Raelin behind him, doing two wounds to Raelin. Me-Burq-Sa moved up the side and failed to paralyze or kill anyone. The monkeys take evasive action, running all over the board, meaning I'm going to have to chase them all down.

At the end of the first round I'm feeling pretty good. I have two wounds on Raelin, but other than that I have good board position and Brunak is two moves away from getting in his start zone and attacking the Krav who haven't moved yet.

Round 2 was ugly, with more Monkey deaths and me chasing around fast moving shooting figures. This round was confusing to play and impossible to explain, so suffice to say that the round ended with two monkeys on my flanks, me having taken out a couple Nikita agents and Crixus taking out a monkey. Brunak and Crixus are starting to accumulate wounds, but if I win initiative and can get Brunak into the start zone to Blood Hungry the Krav Maga, the game could swing decisively in my favor.

Round 3-4 starts with me losing initiative. More chasing. Crixus and Brunak finally corner the last Nikita and Krav on this two space hill and fail to kill them. Me-Burq-Sa, of course, fails two more paralyzing attempts and dies to the monkeys. The Marro move out.

Round 5: Death count: All the agents and 4 of 6 Gorillas on his side. Everyone but three Marros on my side. 2 gorillas against 3 Marro. Of course, his gorillas have height. Dispite all odds, the Marro kill off a single gorilla before dying, making me lose my first battle but scoring 370 of 400 points. Khan wins and goes on to kill everyone else also. The game ended with 4 minutes left on the clock.

Thoughts
I actually kinda like my army. I'm still not a fan of the gorillas, but Khan played them well. I'm happy with my tactics, and Khan played flawlessly, so I'm content with the loss. At this point I'm regretting not taking Johnny, because he could have easily killed the last two gorillas with the shotgun special, and probably won me this game.

MVP: Brunak. He was moving all over and killed well over his points (at 30 points a gorilla and agent, it wasn't hard for him). He would have had even more _and maybe won the game) if we had won that key initiative roll... drat.

Battle 2
Wait, can we kill Sentinels?
My second battle was against Chad (I don't remember who he is on this site) and his Flying Sentinel Army of Doom (FSAoD). His army was made up of 2 squads of sentinels, a 4th Mass and Drake. Looking over my army, I realize that I have no real counter for the Sentinels. My only real chance is to tie them up with Brunak and Crixus and hope Me-Burq-Sa starts rolling more paralyzes (spoiler: he doesn't). At this point, I don't expect to win, so for points I task the Marros with ambushing and killing the 4th Mass and hopefully Drake for points while Brunak and Crixus are taking 3 attack dice hits.

The map was really poor for me. The start zones were clear and there was a small hill near each start zone. The entire middle of the map was a huge area of snow and ice and glaciers, with the ice costing 2 moves to go through. Due to the ice and snow, the whole middle of the board was impossible to cross with a double spaced figure. Looks like I'm going on the defensive...

Round 1: I make my way over to my hill, with Raelin taking the top with Brunak and Crixus taking their holding spots in front of her. Me-Burq-Sa moves up behind everyone, realizes he can't and goes back to where he started from (2 wasted moves. :( ) Chad moves out the 4th Mass towards his hill, and the second two moves are on the sentinels, who fly over to engage my guys. The Marros spring their trap and kill off two 4th Mass after their move, giving them no chance to retaliate. Sweet!

Round 2-3: I'm feeling reasonably confident. My Marro with height should be able to kill off remaining two the 4th Mass pretty easily, and hopefully Brunak and Co will hold long enough to get a couple Sentinels down. Chad places all his markers on the Sentinels, and will have them on for the rest of the game. I'm pretty happy, since I'm positioned so the Sentinels (with their move of 4) can't fly far enough to get to Raelin without becoming engaged with Brunak and Crixus. So they are stuck hitting the 9 def Brunak and the 5 def Crixus. The Sentinels fly in, and proceed to utterly destroy the line. The Marros kill the remaining two 4th Mass, but Brunak rolling 9 defense falls in 4 attacks to Sentinels (on the last roll I rolled 10 defense, with 9 blanks!) Crixus manages to take out a Sentinel before falling. Me-Burq -Sa moved up in the back and failed to paralyse and kill anything (sensing a trend yet?). The single Sentinel flys up and swings at Me-burq-Sa doing three wounds and eliminating him in a single attack! (I think he died of embarassment) Raelin falls to further attacks. Losses for the Sentinels after killing 330 points of my figures? 2.

Round 4-end: The Marros are the last ones alive. They had the idea of getting to the start zone and jumping Drake (who had no markers the entire game) for some quick points. Well, the main battle line fell in a single round and the mop up lasted another round, so they never got around to commencing that attack. The Marros go into "operation annoyance" where they scatter and generally become a pain for slowish melee figures to chase down. But due to all the snow and ice, the Marros are hunted down and killed to a man (alien). But not before killing... 2 Sentinels! The 50 point squad with 2 attack killed as many of the super defense Sentinels as did the rest of the army. Geez. I died pretty quick, and had about 15 minutes to walk around and see how others were doing.

Thoughts: I had no real counter to the Sentinels. I still had decent odds of if not winning at least coming close if it wasn't for Brunak falling to 4 attacks while rolling 9 and 10 defense dice. It was like DW9000 problems 3 times in a row. Also, losing Me-Burq-Sa to the first attack was a major blow since that was the only figure that really stood a chance. I chalk up another loss and only score 217 points.

MVP: The Marro Warriors. They accounted for all the 4th Mass (70 points) and two Sentinels (73 points), which was about 2/3 of the total points I scored in the round.

Battle 3
Battle in the Improbability Field
My third battle was against Oprime himself and his crazy "I don't want to die" army. He played the Ninjas of the North Wind, a set of Microcorp, Agent Carr and Crixus. The board was probably my favorite one that I played on. It was a road down the middle of two hills, with a single hex stream near each of the starting zones, which will play a vitally important role later on.

This game had the strangest die rolls I have ever seen. It wasn't the attack and defense dice in the beginning, but our d20s took the challenge seriously and started doing some really strange things. Of the 5 or 6 initiative rolls, 4 of them were within 1 of each other. Plus, he rolled a 20 to beat my 19, and a 2 to beat my 1. It was bizarre. Plus, the Stealth Armor and Disappear rolls he made were incredible.

Round 1: Raelin started and flew up ontp the hill next and Brunak came up the center. Oprime sent in the ninjas and the Microcorp in, and took some shots which didn't do too much. Me-Burq-Sa moved up and took a shot, which a ninja invis'd away.

Middle Rounds: I then proceeded to kill all his figures. At least, I would have, but the Improbability field meant that he rolled the ninja dodge 4 times and the Microcorp agent stealth armor twice. So far, 6 kill shots, and no kills. Finally, a Marro gets off a one skull shot, which a ninja fails to disappear! :P but then rolls a defense. :? Crap. Raelin falls beneath a flurry of Ninja attacks and Brunak finally kills an Agent with Blood Hungry. After some more manuvering where I believe Brunak gets a ninja with Blood Hungry (which the ninja's can't avoid because its a special attack) Oprime's Crixus has moved up and engaged Brunak, who is feeling the pressure with Raelin gone. Meanwhile, the Marros are falling to ninjas, so the remaining two retreat to my stream and clone two more. The ninjas pursue through Brunak and kill one. Brunak finally gets back on his game and Blood Hungrys the remaining two ninjas to death, before being killed by Crixus (I think. I kinda lost track during this whole battle) Then the two Crixus face off. Oprime rolls 3 skulls and I whiff the defense, so Crixus is down to one wound. Meanwhile the Marros have been reduced to 1, but with some clever rolling are back to 4. Me-Burq-Sa fails another couple of Paralyzes. No surprise there.

The End Game: At the end of the game, my Crixus falls to Oprime's Crixus, and the Marros spread out, preparing to sell their lives dearly. These Marro are now 3rd generation Marro, being Marro 9, 10 and 11. The last 2 rounds see Crixus and Carr trying to kill off the 3 remaining Marro, but the same stuff that made him get all the invis and stealth armor rolls is now on my side and the three Marro hold off Carr and Crixus for two whole rounds, wounding them both almost to the point of death (1 wound left) Oprime killed two of the Marro, but the last remaining Marro holds on for the draw as time runs out. at the end of the game, Oprime had Carr and Crixus left standing with one life left apiece, and a single Microcorp Agent. It is a draw, with Oprime outscoring me 306 to 360-something.

Final Thoughts: The game was definately weird. I never failed a clone, and Oprime never failed a Ninja disappear (except once, which he blocked by rolling shields). I think that if the rolls went my way early in the game, the ninjas wouldn't have been around to kill Raelin, which would have given me the support I needed to take out Crixus and Carr. On the other hand, without the strange rolling for me at the end of the game, Oprime would have swept me as soon as Crixus fell, so I guess it evened out to making us both lose points.

MVP: The Marro Warriors. They cloned like mad, and held on at the end of the game, and scored a bunch of points with the wounds put on Crixus and Carr. At this point, I'm thinking that the Marros are some of the best end game guys to have.

Battle 4
Why don't they make these stupd doors bigger?!?

My final round of the afternoon was against Joe, who was fielding a Charos, Syvarris, Guilty and Izumi Samurai Army. The map was pretty bad for me. It was the Osgilliath that Pilgrim seems pretty fond of, which was covered in lava (good for Brunak) but full of tight corners that Brunak couldn't maneuver around. Plus, he cound't stand near the doorways on either end of the map because of the huge sword he is holding. There were two entry and exit points that he could use, and Syvarris was proving to be a pain to chase down.

Opening rounds: Raelin flies up to the towers that litter the board. she was pretty much untouchable up there, and could use the battlement points to see my figures, so they spent the entire game benefiting from her aura. Early on the samurai made the mistake of charging Me-Burq-Sa, who decided that this was his time and scored two straight paralysis kills. The Marros moved up the middle, and got no markers for the rest of the game. Brunak and Crixus ran straight at charos and engaged the beast in its own start zone.

Middle rounds: Brunak and Crixus beat on Charos, who is unable to deal any back because of Raelin's aura, and Blood Hungry being a special attack and ignoring Counterstrike. Eventually, after a lot of dice being rolled, Charos falls. The Marros and Me-burq-Sa are destroyed in the center by Syvarris.

End Rounds: with Charos out Joe is in trouble, and Brunak goes on a rampage, killing Guilty in a single attack, then moving on and whiffing one attack on Syv, but following it up with a 5 skull roll (+1 for height!) killing him in one attack. All that was left was a single samurai who had plans to run around the board until time ran out, knowing that lumbering Brunak would never catch him through the ruins, but that plan ended on the tip of Raelin's spear. I win my first and only game, scoring 400 and giving Joe 210 with 14 minutes left on the clock.

Final Thoughts: Looking back, I think the board favored me since Raelin was invincible, making Brunak also invincible. Charos took a beating, but I don't think that he did any wounds. Overall, Joe's army just wasn't prepared to deal with a high defense figure who could ignore the Counterstrike.

MVP: Brunak cleaned up, with over 300 points to his credit. He didn't take a single wound.

Wrap up: Overall I was happy with the way that I played. The loss in the second game killed my chances of placing, so I ended up somewhere in the middle around 9. It was a lot of fun, and I'll have to make the trek again some other time.

This is all from memory, so some of it is probably a little off.
