NHSD will come to Maryland this year!!
The Date: Oct. 17th 2009
The Time: 1:00 pm start time. Check in at 12:30.
The Place: Renaissance Games
2315 A-6 Belair Rd.
Fallston, Md. 21047
(Same place as the other Maryland tournies.)
Format: To honor Heroscape on NHSD, we will actually have two formats.
Format 1: Heat of Battle: Create a 450 point force. (No Marvel) We will use the heat of battle rules, for those not familar with them feel free to ask. I'm not posting them because most of us know them. If you don't, ask here, or pm me. Remember there still will be a 24 space starting restriction.
Format 2: General Wars: Create a 500 point force. (No Marvel) All units must follow the same general. 24 space start zone. Standard scape rules apply.
How it will work: We will play a 5 round tourny. Rounds 1 and 3 will be General wars. Rounds 2 and 4 will be heat of battle. Before round 5 a die will be rolled to determine which format will be used for the 5th round.
If you want to bring the same army for both thats fine. Bear in mind the points difference between the formats and the fact that all units must be from the same general for format 2.
This will be the second event in the Eastern Pa/ Maryland scapers 3 event series. I would link this to that but Im no good with computers. As such, we are asking for a $5.00 entry fee which will go towards the prize pool for the main event at the end of our series.
Of course prize donations are always welcome for this event. Bruce, owner of Renaissance Games will be working his sales reps to try to get some support for this event as well.
As always, help with maps would be appreciated. Maps are TBD at this point.
I must limit this to 24 players. While we will have a good amount of space, but I wouldn't want to have to turn anyone away. As soon as you know you can make it let me know so I can reserve your spot.
Really looking forward to this!!

I really hope I can make this, but I think my daughter's birthday party will have to take precedence. Maybe I can convince the wife to move it to Sunday? :ponder:

Your going to be having quite a lot of trouble getting participates as Onacara's NHSD is going to be the 17th as well!
I suspect most will be going to that one.

I don't think it will be that big of a deal. Most of the regular Maryland crew sticks solely to the Maryland events anyway. Also, I would imagine that Onacara's event will be in the far Northeast area and therefore drawing from a different pool of players. The overlap won't be too bad.

Well, anyone having a NHSD will be on the 17th. As Tom said, most of Maryland and lower PA crew will come to mine, so I don't forsee a problem. We have very little overlap between our groups. Taeblewalker being the main one and I imagine he'll go to Ona's as its closer for him.

Already got the party switched to Sunday! The only problem is my wife now has something else she wants me to do on Saturday. I just gotta wait and see how this plays out. Are you going to make this one Arcus or will you just be helping me with practice Scape again ?

This one is a good possibility for me, but I'll need some reminding as it gets closer so I can request off (I know you'll keep me posted). Working as a bartender can definitely hamper weekend activities, but the money is good so I can't complain.
I will definitely be up for some practicing whenever you are. I'd also like to run my little Aquilla side project by you so you can help me flesh them out before I send them to Truth.

Last time I checked Connecticut (or rhode Island? I haven't really been following NHSD stuff) is kind of far away from Maryland. I don't see much overlap.

There's also some crazy guy willing to drive from Maryland up to Boston and Saratoga isn't there? You should get him to organise the event, declare the start time to be 4am, load the participants into the back of a transit and drive them all up here. I think that's the best option all round. ;)

This is from the GenCon 09 tournament rules. You can find the thread here (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=24382&highlight=heat+battle).
Bring a pre-drafted 450 point Heroscape (no Marvel) army that does not exceed 24 hexes. There are no starting zones; players will take turns placing one card's worth of units anywhere on the battlefield except on glyphs until all figures are placed.

MMM!...In Heat of Battle, all pieces from every card you have are automatically placed at the beginning of the game? Does that include those with abilities preventing them from normally automatically landing on the battlefield or the like (such as the Retchets)?

Yes they do, and they still count toward your 24 starting spaces even though they don't start on the board.

Here is the list of the maps from the first post that people are bringing so far. The 4 in the middle still need volunteers to bring them.
Maps:
Ticalla Sunrise - by Spidysox
Badru Valley - by Spidysox
Flash fire - by Jackall
Ruins of Pine tree marsh - by Jackall
Sidewinder
Highways and dieways
Ticalla stronghold (Rednax's maps)
Hide and seek (Gamebear's maps)
Ratcatcher (Gamebear's maps) - by Tom
High Point 2 (Tom's maps) - by Tom
Map of doom (Clancampbell's maps) - by Clancampbell
Map of joy (Clancampbell's maps) - by Clancampbell
More than likely there will be no food or snacks provided. Also, it is worth mentioning that Reniassance Games does not allow outside food or drink in the store. They do sell their own drinks and snacks though.
If I had to guess, I would expect the event to be over no earlier than 6:30 pm. That is assuming 1 hour rounds (Clancampbell will have to confirm this) and a quick awards ceremony.

Tom has it about right. About 6:30 or so for an end time.
Also, as Tom pointed out, Rennissance games does not allow outside food or drink in their store. They do have sodas and some snacks available for purchase. There is a Burger King, a pizza shop and a diner all very close by so if you wanted to get in a little early and have lunch before the tourny you could. I would suggest doing that, because once we get started there will not be time to break for a meal.
Also you have stated "us" in your above post. Are you bringing someone with you? Its ok if you are, just let me know so I can reserve a spot for them as well.

Nah we don't need to give him mis-information, all we need to do is make his armies for him. I already picked out his general wars army.

Arcus and I managed to get together last night for some Scape. We played a couple of games on Ratcatcher (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/downloads.php?do=file&id=1838) and I think I can safely say we were both unimpressed. It took forever to move anybody up to the top level of the map. We spent the first two ROUNDS just moving figures up to the elevation without any attacks. Once we got there, the area is so crowded with Jungle pieces and the two walls, I was constantly knocking things over.
Has anybody else had a bad experience with the way this map plays? Maybe we could consider a different map if other people are having similar problems? That being said, I will still bring it if other people want to give it a go. Just hope you don't play on it with non-flyers!

I didn't so much mind the height (shooters could easily engage figures by the second order marker), but either remove the tall grass (I'd leave the one palm) or the walls from the center of the field and open it up a bit. The center is just too much of a choke point.

I did not relize the map was that high. Perhaps another is in order then. Any suggestions Tom?
I am not totally against Ratcatcher, especially after two plays. Hopefully somebody else can give it a try and offer some feedback. Let's keep it on the list for now.
If I were going to replace it though I would suggest maybe Healing Waters (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/downloads.php?do=file&id=1462) or Dvalin's Furnace (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/downloads.php?do=file&id=1389). They look cool.

Wk4c, you and your crew have been added to the list!
Talked to Mike, (Manager of Renniasance Games), and after that I've bumped the attendance limit to 26, which has been promptly filled. I'm honored to have so many wanting to attend my event, most from out of state.
While I would love to blow the roof off and have tons of guests, the space is prohibative. At this point we have 26 confirmed players for the event and sadly I have to declare entry locked at this point. I'm sorry to anyone who had wanted to come and could not commit. That being said, if plans change and you can not make it, please let me know asap so I can offer your spot to someone else.
Maps. I still need help with maps. I thank those that have already offered. If you can bring a map, please do so. The list is in the OP.
Thank you all, I'm looking forward to NHSD, this should be a blast!

I have a question about the "Heat of Battle" rules. In placing figures on the board, do their special powers come into play after they are placed. For example, if the Nakita Agents are placed and then others are placed next to them, do they get to roll for Engagement Strike?

Here is an interesting post on the subject of Heat of Battle. You can find the thread here (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=24842&highlight=Heat+Battle+event). Here (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showpost.php?p=830991&postcount=9) is a link to the particular post below. I am not sure if these are the rules Clancampbell wants to use so we should wait for confirmation from him.

The rules are
d20 roll - high goes first.
High roll chooses who goes first.

Tip - If you want to be the last person to place units on the board in an attempt to have board control before the game begins, play more army cards than they are. When they run our of cards you continue placing all your remaining pieces.
Depending on the map and the location and amount of high ground, I might choose to place my pieces first in order to secure a key location instead of worrying about who places last. It really depends a lot on what my opponent is bringing to the table as well. If my opponent has all Marro Drones then I really need to focus on high ground and not placing last unless I have some key ranged units that I don't want engaged at the start.
FYI:
Another ruling on this event from two years ago was that if you have Nakita Agents and your opponent places a unit next to them during the 'placement' stage, you do get to take the engagement strike roll.

Man I am so glad to see this fill up so quick. Clan, just so you know, Lil Miss Spidy and Lil Miss Pete could easily be dropped from the event to make room for more "serious" players. It will not hurt them at all. So if you have others that would like to play who are likely to be a better match in the event, do not be afraid to drop them from the event.

I appreciate this, from both you and Pete. Right now, it seems we will be ok. I won't drop anyone who has already confirmed, and it seems like we have all our regulars and a few extra too. The closest thing I came to that is Migol, 4x Dwarves, Isumi Samurai for HotB. And Migol, 5x Dwarves, 1x Spiders (Mattheus Macebius'(SP?) Gen-Con GW army) for GW.
If I could have gone I would have played Q9, 4x Romans, Me-Berq-Sa, Isamu, Otonashi for HotB. And 4x 4th Mass, 2x Sentenals for GW.

Ok, so that fills out our map selections. 5 days away, we have 27 people registered, which will break my previous attendance record of 25.
If anyone has any questions please ask, either here or pm me. Please be sure you understand both formats, and the rules and army build restrictions that go along with each.
Please try to be on time. I understand, that many of you are coming from out of state, and even most of our in state players are still about an hour away. Still, I'd like to start on time, so that we can be certain to get all 5 rounds in, and the awards at the end. Getting all our long distance travlers back home at a semi-resonable hour helps too.
We've made the list of NHSD's that will recive support from WOTC. From what I'm being told is the support will be sent today, along with PM's of what is being sent. I'll post, after I recive my confirmation PM. We should all take time to thank Rychen for his efforts and hard work on this front.
I'm really looking forward to this event, as I hope all of you are as well.

Okay, I read GrungeBob's clarification on the Nakitas in the Heat of Battle and it sounds like (pending ClanCampbell's confirmation) they do get to roll d20 if the opponent places adjacent to them. I guess this also applies to Arkmer? But it is Clan's call. Clan?
What about the Omicron Repulsers? If you place them next to Soulborgs, do you get to roll d20 to attack? It is "after you move" according to GB's ruling.
I am fine either way, but would like to know the ruling before we play.
I can bring some terrain with me in case you run short a map at the last minute. I have at least one of everything, so consider me a floater. Or if you want to, you can assign me a map.

Ok, rulings on Nakita's and Arkamer.
Yes you can roll for engagement strike when a unit is placed next to them. However if you place them next to your oppenents figure you can not roll. Hope that makes sense. I was going to rule no, but that would make those figures worthless, basically.
As far as repulsors and the like, if its an after you move power, than you can not roll for it when placing figures.
Thanks for your offer Shaugville, I think we're good for maps, but extra peices can't hurt.

If that is how Clan decides to go then Arkmer would definitely get the engagement strike if someone were to place a small/medium figure next to him during the initial placement.
What about the Omicron Repulsers? If you place them next to Soulborgs, do you get to roll d20 to attack? It is "after you move" according to GB's ruling.
I am fine either way, but would like to know the ruling before we play.
If I had to decide on the Repulsors, I would say that they don't get their D20 attack if you place them next to other soulborgs during placement. Their power doesn't activate unless you place an order marker on them. On the other hand, figures with engagement strike don't require the order marker to activate the power. In a standard placement game you don't roll for adjacent soulborgs in your own start zone until you put the order marker onto the Repulsors. :2cents:.
Also, we still need a ruling on if high roller places first or if they get to choose who places first.

Well, tomorrow is NHSD, and it is also Diwali, (Indian holiday-festival of the lights) so that is what I will be doing while you guys are 'Scaping. :D
No, seriously, have a good time, and I wish you good luck with your armies. For those of you that have no armies (yet), Sensei of Samurai and I are posting our armies, just for fun.
My General Wars army:
4x Stingers = 300
Cyprien Esenwein = 450
Sonya Esenwein = 495
(although, for some reason, I could have sworn I had 5x Stingers... )
My HoB army:
4x Zombies of Morindan
Isamu
Marcu Esenwein
Major Q9
Sensei of Samurai's General Wars army:
Actually, he didn't come up with an army for General Wars.
Sensei of Samurai's HoB army:
He had a few selections, but the most recent was:
3x Obsidian Guards
Warden 816
Izumi Samurai
Well, as I said, enjoy yourselves, and I hope to see you all at Vitm's Allentown tourney!

What a great day and another successful NHSD in the books. Thanks for everything Don!!!
PS. I still have your archers safely tucked away in their baggie. I completely forgot to give them back and I'm sorry. I'll have them for you by the next tournament.

Thanks, Don! Our first tournament was wonderful and we had a super time! (We will not talk about the results).
For all those who participated, a Heroscaper's Blessing:
May your attack dice always be skulls, may your defense dice always be shields and when you roll the d20, may it always land 20 - unless you are rolling against me."
