In celebration of Marvel's 70th birthday and because I'm curious, who is your favorite superhero and why? Mine is Spider-Man. The first memory I have of getting a superhero comic is when my dad brought home The Amazing Spider-Man #76 for me because I was sick with the mumps. He brought me others that day and even before that time I had gotten some, but the first one I can remember clearly is that one. I've been collecting ever since. Thanks Dad.

I don't read comics or anything, but Batman has always been my favorite. Joker's my favorite villain, too. (I liked him before Dark Knight, in case anyone was wondering... :p)

Cool. Villain wise for me it would have to be Kang the Conqueror. I like the idea of a leader/general that can pluck different soldiers and creatures out of different periods of time and space to use as his personal army. (That sounds like a good idea for some kind of board game.)

Oh, Villain is easy for me. Easily 2 of the most complex baddies ever (when written properly).
Magneto - When wrote correctly is easily the deepest and most sympathetic bad guy in the Marvel universe.
Doctor Doom - Again, only when written correctly, is just a force of nature. Completely truthful, a ruler of a nation, and a man of his word (just make sure you listen to his words carefully :) )
How can you not root for a bad guy who once took over the world, eliminated poverty, war, and decided to let the good guys win because there was no challenge anymore.

Doomsday; he was the first one I saw beat up Superman and ruin that image of the "perfect hero" that was invincible. (I'm not into comics, so there may have been others before him that beat up Superman.)
As for heroes, I prefer the X-men as a grouping, with all their coolness, but humanity mixed in, to bring them back down to earth.

I've never been into non-comic strip comics too much, but I've always been a fan of the Silver Surfer, then Iron Man. (Before the movies).
Other than that, I've always like Ignatz Mouse (I consider him a comic hero because he layed the basis for many modern day cartoons). Okay, Hijacking over, sorry, back to superheroes!

Demon in a Bottle, love that and Iron Wars (Was that what it was called, 2 of them but only the first is any good) are among my favorite Iron Man runs.

Indeed - I'll take my superhero's flawed, thank you very much.
Single biggest reason I cannot stand to read 90% of DC's comics growing up. They were all just too good at everything. Probably also why I hated Batman comics but love "The Dark Knight Returns".

Yeah, as a kid I read everything, but on some level even then I knew that Marvel as a whole was better at humanizing their characters . Even though as a child I didn't know what to call it.

Heroes: Superman(Liked him ever since I saw Superman I and II. Oh yeah, and I liked Tom Welling's portrayal of the character in Smallville).
Batman(Liked him in Batman: TAS, Batman Begins and Dark Knight.).
Captain America(I like my patriotic superheroes!)
And finally Spider-Man.
Villains:
Joker (I like psychotic villains!)
Killer Croc (I just like this guy.)
Two-Face (See above)
Doc Doom (What's not to love about an egomaniacal supervillain?)
Green Goblin (See Joker)

Mister Miracle (Scott Free) of Jack Kirby's Fourth World quatralogy, actually released by DC (but who at this point cares). He is considered to be the most autobiographical of Kirby's many wonderful characters, and his relationship to his girl friend/wife Big Barda is supposedly based on JK's with his own wife Roz.
Others: Hal Jordan (there can be only one GL). Hawkman and Hawkwoman, the first married couple. The Fantastic Four (esp. Reed) and the X-Men (esp. Scott).
And of course:
Cross the Rainbow Bridge to Asgard
Where the booming heavens roar
You'll behold with breathless wonder
The god of thunder
Mighty Thor!

I'm really into comics, DC in particular. Favorite superhero is Plastic Man... Basically if Mr. Fantastic could shapeshift too, and had Jim Carrey's personality. Really funny stuff.
Favorite villain? I can't decide between Deathstroke the Terminator and Darkseid.

I read comics pretty much just in the 80's. I never got into DC. I think it is for pretty much the same reasons others have said. Superman was just too perfect to be interesting. I really got into Marvel stuff. I liked X-men, and the New Mutants a lot. I'm almost embarrassed to say that I really was into Power Pack. A big reason is that right when I started reading comics, Power Pack 1 came out and I was about the same age and mostly had the same interests as Alex Power/Gee. My favorite of that title, however, was Jack Power/Mass Master. He was just cool. Cool for a kid anyway. My favorite characters with mass appeal were Colossus with Wolverine coming in second.
Now I have to say that my favorite is Batman. Dark Knight Returns is a great book. I really dig Batman: Year One as well.
For villain I would have to go with Magneto. The whole Xavier/Magneto thing is a nice backdrop for stories. Two sides with similar goals, but conflicting approaches. Top it off with the leaders being old friends.

Magneto is the best villain simply because you can easily understand his reasoning. He's an extremist, but of the "Never again, no matter what" mold.
Few other villains are so relatable as him - That understanding can also make him far more terrifying and realistic.

My favorite fictional character (let alone super-hero) is, hands down, Spider-Man. For me, "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" are the greatest words Stan Lee ever wrote and right up there with "Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You" as far as words to live by go. *
As for villains, my favorite is Doctor Doom for his complexity. Yeah, on the surface he may look like just another guy who wants to rule the world, but his own people adore him and he really loves his mommy, so much so that he once went to Hell to retrieve her soul. Who among us can say that? ;)
* For the record, I'm not a Christian. If I were to subscribe to any religion, it would be Spider-Manity.

Personally, I've always been a fan of the X titles. Though going back and reading some of them now (especially the early X-Force stuff) they've lost a bit of their appeal. That being said I still like most of the characters (except for Cyclops, I can't stand that guy).
As far as specific characters go, I've always liked Multiple Man (new and old), Speedball (80's era, not the new version), Thor (though I've never really read too much of it), and there's something about the idea behind Green Arrow that I really like.
Edit: I can't beleive I forgot these guys, Conan, Kull, and to a lesser extent Ka-Zar.

Ummm, Thor isn't a Half God. He is a full God.

Doom rules when written properly. And he challenges Mephesto to battle once a year to reclaim his mother's soul.
Plus you have to give props to anyone who can beat Galaticus, steal his power, challenge the Beyonder, and steal his power.

This really tough for me. There are so many great characters Nexus, Grimjack, Syzygy Deathlock, Detective Kane, Mister X, Emanuel Santana (Scout), Reuben Flagg. My choices are decidedly not from the big two because these characters are simply better developed and more realistic than anything those two put out.
If your asking just Marvel it has to be Adam Warlock (maybe Ironman or Dr. Strange)
If it's DC then Firestorm the Nuclear Man.
I guess I like the tortured souls.

I don't have one particular favorite. I've got a lot of Comics from the 80's, so that's where my favorites would come from.
I like Spidey of course, he always was scraping for money, having girl problems, had some funny lines all the time while fighting and had some great villians to fight.
I also like Daredevil. He's just a cool hero that struggles with his lawyer ways and his hero's abilities to fight crime. He fights to protect the little guy and isn't out to save the world, just his little piece of it. I also love the way his senses work in telling what might happen by someone's heartbeat that he hears and so many other subtle indicators. I also love the acrobatic ways he moves around and fights.
Gotta love Captain America as well.
For the higher powered heroes, I like Iron Man and Thor.
Edit: I like DC's The Question as well from late 80's
Magneto and Joker are ultimate villians.
I also like the criminal couple of Absorbing Man and Titania. They crack me up.

I can't quite decide my favorite superhero. :p
Honestly though I know nothing about Marvel or DC other than the recent movies and the old Green Lantern cartoon I used to watch when I was little. I had to look up whether or not GL was DC or Marvel, I made the mistake a few time after making this name.
So... DC? Green Lantern because of my younger years. I was a cute kid running around pretending to be GL. :D
Marvel? Captain America, just looks cool.

I would have to go with
DC Hero: Green Lantern. I love the versatility of his power.
DC Villan: Muse, I really like his strange motivation for villainy
Marvel Hero: Captain America, I really like the super soldier backstory
Marvel Villain: I've always been partial to Thanos. Nothing beats ultimate power. And the Infinity Wars were just fantastic.
Wildcard Hero: V, I really like the idea of a Chaotic Good hero
Wildcard Villain: Probably have to go with Ozzy from The Watchmen. Once again, I really like the moral debates he brings up with Rorschach

In the mid to late '80's, I read nothing but G.I.Joe. By far, that was - and is -my favorite comic book of all time. But then in the early '90's, I got into all the superhero comics and I had a lot of interests.
For the big two (Marvel and DC), I would say Silver Surfer, Gambit, and Adam Warlock ranked among my favorites for Marvel, while Aquaman and Robin were it for DC.
Villian wise, nothing beat Thanos for me, especially in the Infinity Gauntlet series. 8)
Outside of the two powerhouses, I would say Spawn was probably one of my favorite heroes. Sadly, I stopped reading comics after awhile and never really saw how Spawn played out, but, initially, at least, it was a fantastic comic and easily my favorite.

Favorite villians
Juggernaut , Klaw , Ultron and Carnage
I always liked villians more which is why I enjoy the Thunderbolts so much.

Even though I prefer Marvel over DC I still have favorites for DC. Here they are:
Hero - Hawkman. I love all the different weapons he uses. And I really like it when he goes all ballistic on somebody with a mace. Plus, he's got wings! Man, that would be cool. Beating the crap out of things with a mace and having wings. I guess that's why I like the Sentinels so much (yeah, I know they use hammers, but that's close to a mace)
Villain - Ra's al Ghul. What's not to like about this guy? And when they cast David Warner on the Animated Batman for his voice that clinched it. Every time I read something with Ra's I hear Warner's voice saying it in my head. Which is cool. What isn't cool is when I hear his voice in my head and I'm not reading. That's just weird and kind of creepy.

Daredevil....hands down. I remember him getting his arm broke and then going through 3-5 issues one armed till it healed. and letsface it, Hells Kitchen was a great neiborhood for a heroe to fight for justice in.
Villians, lets see....I'll have to think on this one.

Spider-man is my favorite superhero for several of the reasons others have stated, I just like his powers and I never liked any other super-hero so much...
My favorite villain is Two-face... for several unknown reasons, he's just cooler than all the others in my mind.
I've never read any comic books at all though, I go off of movies, video games, and information I've run across on the internet.

What the hay, I'll add.
Super Heroes:
1. Bruce Wayne. Everyone thinks he's so stupid because he doesn't have a Superpower...well guess what. HE DOES! Money. :P
2. Wally West. He's got my most wanted superpower.
3. Dick Grayson. But during his Post-Robin career. I don't know why he was cooler after he left Bruce, but he just became a badass.
Super Villains:
1. Theo Adam. He gets the powers derived from ancient Egyptian gods just by saying a word. Endurance (doesn't need to eat, sleep, breath and can withstand pretty much anything), Speed (Running Speed: Mach 500), Strength, Knowledge, Power (flight, resistance to magic, etc), and Courage (resistant to Mind Control, Telepathy). He IS a god!
2. Amazo. He took down the freakin' Justice Leage. With their own powers. Bam.
