This post lists the couple of main topics that need to be discussed
1) Location
2) Maps to Use
3) Misc. (Reinforcemnts, Whole Card ALS, etc.)
LOCATION ISSUES:
There is an issue over the location of the tournament. The higher our numbers the better the prizes support for NHSD (which means we really need to hold one tournament on October 17th at one location if we want it for an "official" NHSD).
So below are the pros and cons. I need to know your preference if you have one and if one of the locations makes it impossible for you to attend.
Cool Stuff Games:
Pros:
Centrally located in the state, has the space, has side-items to entertain for those not playing in semi-final or final (video games, movies) and sells soda and snacks.
Cons:
Doesn't have the map-building materials on-hand, video games and movies might prove a distraction, doesn't regularly run HS at the store.
Questions:
Can any setup be performed the night before?
Armada Games:
Pros:
Has the space, regularly holds HS game days/nights, has the materials to build at least half of the needed maps to run the tournament so setup could begin the night before by Torog and Zealot.
Cons:
Distance - this is a longer drive for anyone on the East Coast of up to 1.5 hours extra.
Questions:
Do they have available snacks, any restrictions of any kind?
We are a big state and the discussions of having Florida Frenzy x.0 move around the state as well as having separate North / South tourneys (the gang in South Florida holds a tournament after NHSD but that doesn't garner them prize support from WoTC) might be time to start up again once we get through this year's NHSD.
My last note on this: We've always had trouble with getting people and materials together to build a lot of maps in the last year with Necro leaving to northern pastures... So a major need is to either have materials available from the store or to make sure people coming have materials and can get to the store to build maps in time before round 1 begins. Please consider this when discussing as it is a hurdle for us.
MAPS:
They've got some great maps for GenCon and I know most of you are probably not going, so I'd like to look at the GenCon maps to make our selections from. I'd like us to pick 5 maps so that if we have 3 - 4 of each map we can host easily 30 to 40 players:
Please pick 6 maps and then from all the picks we'll take the 5 that were selected the most.

MISC:
ALS Change from Fractional to Whole-Card
1) ALS is only used as a Tie-Breaker when Wins/SOS are identical
2) We have only needed to use ALS to break a tie once in 2 years and that was for 13th and 14th place...
3) Fractional Scoring has been difficult without a chart or calculator and has always taken upwards of 5 - 10 minutes extra for people to do (one of the factors that slows us down greatly at tournaments)
4) Hasbro uses whole card scoring at GenCon, which is the precursor and sets the tone for NHSD, unit rankings, etc.
Unless I hear a big grumble from the community I think we'll see a much smoother tournament with simply using whole card scoring since it has so little impact on the players' rankings in the last two years. So if you hate it let me know, if you love it let me know, if you don't care... don't let me know. ;)
Q: What is ALS?
A: ALS is Absolute Losing Score. If you lose the match, you count up the points from all your opponent's cards that you destroyed. So if your opponent has Jotun and you destroy him, 225 points are added to your ALS for that match.
Q: What is Whole Card Scoring?
A: Whole-Card scoring means you ignore any cards that are not completely destroyed (you must destroy all 3 Krav Maga Agents to get the 100 ALS points, you must completely destroy Kaemon Awa to get the 120 ALS points). Only killing some of the squad or partially wounding the hero means you don't get the points for the card.
Q: If my Airborne Elite or Rechets of Bogdan dont' make it onto the board, do they count as destroyed for ALS?
A: If you win the match your opponent doesn't get the points for them since you didn't need to even use them. If you lose the match the winner automatically gets 500 (575 for semi-final and final) points regardless of what you put on the board or not.
Q: If I destroy my opponents entire army do I list ALS?
A: No - the scoring system automatically gives you a 500 ALS for having destroyed his entire army (575 for semi-final and final) regardless of the actual number of points he has in his army.
Q: If my army is less than 500 points and my opponent destroys my entire army, how many kill points does he get?
A: 500, that's the allowable point total and how Hasbro totals it. But again, ALS really only matters to the loser of the match.
Reinforcements (the twist)
We are going to add in reinforcement this year like they are doing for the GenCon Championship. When you list your army you will list the 500 points that make up your army and then you will list the 75 points that make up your reinforcements (and you don't have to tell anyone else). During the Semi-final (5th swiss for remaining players) you get to break out the additional 75 points.
Q: What if my base army is 495 points? Can I have 80 points of reinforcements? If base is 450 can I have 125 points of reinforcements?
A: Yes - Your base army cannot exceed 500 points and with reinforcements it cannot exceed 575 points. And you cannot exceed 24 hexes worth of figures to meet start zones no matter what.
Q: Do I have to announce my entire army
A: You must list your base army on your tournament sheet and a separate card will be given to you to put your reinforcements on.
Q: Can I swap figures between my base army and reinforcements between tournament rounds?
A: No - the reinforcments are added to your base army during the Semi-Final (5th Swiss for remaining players) and Final Rounds.
Number of Matches?
You'll note we are doing both swiss rounds and a semi-final and final. GenCon (which is the biggest of the tourneys each year) only does this for the Championship and does it over two days. For us to do this timely and allow travel time for our competitors we are doing 4 swiss and the 5th swiss will be for remaining players during the semi-final to determine final placement for prize selection.
4 Swiss rounds is more than enough to determine semi-finalists. Assuming we have upwards of 40 players we will have the following undefeated numbers at the end of each round:
End of Round 1 = 20 undefeated players
End of Round 2 = 10 undefeated players
End of Round 3 = 05 undefeated players
End of Round 4 = 02 - 03 undefeated players

This looks great, himsati. I'll see if I can make it up.
One note on ALS, I'm not positive (I can check if you like), but I think that at our last tourney Blue Dane and I tied for 4th place (in both Wins and SOS), with about 30-50 points being the difference between him advancing to the semi-finals and me being knocked out of contention.
Nonetheless, I concur that partial points are a pain and that Hasbro, Gencon, and many major tourneys have stick with whole card scoring. Here is ollie's work (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=26029) on different tourneys and their structures, fwiw.
I think the changes you are making are excellent. Again, I hope I can make this work; we'll see...

I can do either as long as we have the available time for setup and the materials between the store and players...
Himsati's Map Votes:
Sentinel
Slash and Burn
Just Passing Thru
Derelict
Fire Isles
Sidewinder
I feel that looking at this combination of maps doesn't force us to rely heavily on a specific expansion set to where we need 10 copies of an expansion no one has to make the maps.
Thoughts on Misc:
Obviously you know my thoughts already since I created the thread on this. Most of this is to try and match up with what WoTC does for their official tourneys for the purposes of time, ease of play for participants, prize support (just in case), etc.

I've seen Ollie's work and actually used it to do final summaries against several other threads concerning the tournament scoring, what they are doing at GenCon, etc. And even as you noted, when you had to use ALS its not like you managed to tie in ALS as well. It seems pretty rare that even with whole cards that a full tie in Wins, SoS and ALS all occur at the end of a particular match.

I knew you had seen ollie's work; I thought perhaps some of the other members might not have. And, yes, I have never seen a tie in all three categories.
I had never used partial scoring until we had a tourney here and it was just kind of assumed to be the tourney standard. Now that I see that it isn't actually the standard, I have to admit that I am considering going back to whole card scoring.
I love the idea of incorporating the GenCon maps and reinforcements model. Very fun choices.

Heh, others come to the site to procrastinate, but I produce "work". I'll pass that along to my boss. ;)
I wanted to throw the main argument for fractional scoring in for consideration: I agree that it does not make a big difference for tournament standings, however it does make a big difference when deciding games that have gone to time. Fractional scoring advocates (of which I am one) claim that it gives both a more accurate estimate of which player would go on to win and does less to distort the game prior to time being called (in terms of making moves you might not otherwise have done if you were playing as if the game was to be completed). Your arguments of convenience and officialness may well still trump these, I just wanted to be sure you had the most powerful reasons for fractional scoring in mind when rejecting it.
And while I'm gatecrashing anyway, is there any interest in setting up a Florida NERV region? (See the link in my signature for more details.)

I think the fact that Cool Stuff Games is a HeroScapers site sponsor is an additional "plus," along with having tons of HeroScape in stock. They also seem willing to host regular game nights if anyone in the area wanted that. So they get my vote for the National HeroScape Day, while we could do Tampa for other competitions, like FF 3.5.
On the tournament structure:
-If you want to do reinforcements, the point value should be lower, and not start at 500. Perhaps we can have 425 armies, and then 75 points of reinforcements?
-I like whole card scoring. However, your example of the Airborne Elite is unclear. What happens if "time" is called, and they have not dropped?
-That brings me to how to call time. I have always had a big problem with stopping in the middle of the round. I say that 5 minutes before the end of the round, we simply say "last round" and play a complete round from there.
-For Strength of Schedule (SoS) boosts, how about:
(+2) if no Marvel (but allow Marvel)
(+1) if no more than 3 identical common squads
(-1) Q9
(-1) Raelin (RotV)
(-1) each squad of the A+ commons after the first squad
The last part means one squad of 4th Mass takes no penalty, but 4 squads get (-3)
Next, I like the glyph suggestions, but how can we play the Kelda (Healer) one unless it is face up? We could play them face up to start (that works for me).
I have always hated the 24 hex limit (not that I ever exceed it), so I would prefer to play no limit and that the player must add hexes to the back of the start zone to accommodate all their figures.
Lastly, I'll have to think about the maps, but I prefer to have at least one designed by one of the attendees. And I really don't know if we'll be getting more than 30 people -- I expect there to be around 24. You can put me down as being one of those 24.
-----
Edit: I see nothing wrong with having a Florida rating system like the NERV, but 1) we need a good name and 2) we need to have more tournaments.

Hello Florida Scapers,
Location:
I would like to cast my vote for Armada Games as our location this year for a several reasons. The number 1 reason for me is their "opened" stock of Heroscape which we would be allowed to use for set up. Armada Games has somewhere around 8+ ROTV master sets as well as numerous RTTFF and VW expansion sets that we would be able to use to supply our terrain need for the tournament. I've worked the Heroscape display table for them before at conventions and I didn't have to use ANY of my own collection to build some large show maps to teach people on. This is my single biggest reason for pushing Armada since it would allow Rennix, Torog, and Myself to set up ALL the maps for this year's tournament the night before thereby expediting the registration process the next day.
My second reason for supporting Armada for the location this year is the table size. I have no doubts about the number of tables available to us at Cool Stuff games but their tables look roughly the same size as the ones at Sci-Fi games which always felt a little cramped to me. I will have to get the exact measurements from the guys at Armada but they have 6 custom built tables each of which can hold up to 3 large Heroscape boards with room for cards and figures to spare. These 6 custom tables are in addition to their numerous regular size tables like the ones at Cool Stuff.
My third reason for wanting to hold the tournament at Armada is the Heroscape and other gaming products they have in stock. Armada has 4 full sets of both Wave 1 and Wave 9, numerous random boosters from Wave 7 and 8, Castle sets, Master sets, Forgotten Forrest, as well as Orms Return.
The "other" gaming products I was referring to is their "in store" demo games. Armada has a bookshelf, filled with board games, card games, and miniature games that are free use inside the store. So anyone waiting around for the tournament to start, end, or isn't participating but wants to have some fun trying new games for free would have multiple choices available to them.
My last reason for wanting to hold the tournament at Armada is the store's hours of operation. Officially, Armada games opens at Noon and closes at Midnight; HOWEVER, the guys at Armada have told me repeatedly that they would be willing to open earlier for special events (we'd pretty much have dibs on the whole store that day, reserved for tournament, etc...) in addition to the fact that they usually stay open well after 1 in the morning on Saturday Night which would give people LOTS of time for casual play after the tournament, Heroscape, or otherwise (demo games I mentioned).
Oy, that was a long post. Definitely put me on the list for participating in this year's tournament. (I have to try to keep my title ) and I will post my choices/input on the maps, glyphs, etc... in a later post.
One final note, I definitely like the 500pt with 75pt reinforcement idea simply because 500pts is a solid army build (very common) and the reinforcements will only even matter during the semi-final and final rounds so the first 4 Swiss rounds will be completely unaffected. (it won't slow us down any until the last rounds anyway).
Sincerely,
~Zealot

As location choice goes, I would immediately say Cool Stuff Games. However, that does seem a bit selfish since the main reason is that it will shave 3 hours off of my total driving time. I'll think about it.

I'm pretty sure ollie was talking about making a Florida Region in the NERV system. I think Ohio has done the same thing. It makes a Florida leaderboard in addition to adding our scores to the national board. It's not a different rating system.

3 hours? You going in circles or something? Even if you drive to Orlando then to Tampa it would only add about 1.5 hours not 3. Recheck your math?

If you take I-4, the distance between Cool Stuff and Armada is 90 minutes. I think Mr Migraine and others coming from the east (or north) will essentially have to pass Cool Stuff to get to Armada. Hence 90 minutes extra both ways, or an extra 3 hours.
Zealot, you make a strong case for Armada, but we need to allow Cool Stuff to try and match it. Cool Stuff does support the game, just no one is usually in the area to play.
Whatever is decided, I think we should say that wherever this tournament is, the next one will be at the other place. Fair enough?

We should at least give them a chance. Heck, they might even try to out-do Armada if supplies become the deciding factor.

That sounds fair enough. Like the Superbowl, but a board game. We should at least go to our Site Sponsor once. They seem pretty interested; it would be pretty cheesy to completely blow them off. :|

Yes, you have it described accurately here Mr Migraine. We currently have three regions: Northeast, Ohio (OVAH) and Michigan (MPH).
It's probably best to think of it as a local system operating within a national framework. Each area uses exactly the same system but comparing ratings across regions is relatively meaningless unless there are inter-region games played regularly. GenCon will at least start us on that path. Ideally, there will be a local system maintained by someone based in Florida (volunteers?) and the regional lists will be merged periodically by me into the main list (link in signature; update coming this week that will include the Michigan region for the first time).
It's not an arduous job at all for the volunteer as long as they have access to a spreadsheet program (I use Excel). KCU Master 2007 and Damja both got everything up and running smoothly just by working from the templates I sent them.

Location:
Lots of good points by everyone, but what I'd like to see is some direct communication between myself and the two stores. Cool Stuff hasn't shown an interest in actually having me contact them and Armada has not returned my contact e-mail as of yet. That is a point I'd give in Sci-Fi City's favor is that Troy always promptly returned any contact and did at least show a casual interest in dealing with myself (and with Necro before me) in offering a place to play.
I'd like to know if Cool Stuff has sets that can be used as building materials, what hours are they willing to open up early and/or close late, etc. I'd like to actually hear from both locations, those who are their main players and contacts please have them reach me at rickdon@invisiblewar.com.
I'm going to send off a couple of PM's in the next day or so to get people over here onto the thread to discuss so we can get a real good feel for who can make which location. That coupled with (hopefully) some contact from these stores so I can get a good comparison would be nice.
And finally, if we can get this settled soon enough we can help set up some carpools to help everyone get to the tournament for those that have some issues with the distance and cost for gas and such.
Scoring:
Absolutely hear you Ollie on the issue over when time is called and had definitely considered that. But I'm noticing it is just not an issue at places like GenCon with 32, 40 and 80 person tournaments. Weighing that against difficulties players wind up having (I've had to go recalculate for players more than a few times in the last few big tournaments we've had ), etc... If we were doing an elimination-style tournament I'd use fractional scoring since losing means you are out and any ties at all just are extremely problematic in that kind of tourney.
NERV:
Great idea we should join in. My suggestion is that we get FF3.0 off the ground and running and hold those results and then work on setting up a North and South area of Florida with a key person to coordinate in each (due to size of state) with a nice set of key locations available and those two could then work together to submit up the results and we'd have a North and South Florida Frenzy x.0 and x.5 each year plus individual tourneys in-between. Not saying right now I'd be running either long-term but just my suggestion.
Structure:
Looking to the future, with FF3.0 we really have set the precedent for the "Florida" Championship or if we divide and do North and South, state-regional champs. I'd like to keep this as close to how WotC/Heroscapers.com runs (especially at events like GenCon which is basically the North American Championship as it were) as possible; even though we most likely will never be part of a DCI-type structure, being part of something like NERV and following what is basically a standard format that keeps in line with how the truly epic events are being run. This is why (since we haven't actually done 500 in a while as it is) I have put forth the 500 point and then the 75 point reinforcements. Right now the Gen Con championship stands a good chance of going over 600 points for the reinforcement rounds.

If we were doing an elimination-style tournament I'd use fractional scoring since losing means you are out and any ties at all just are extremely problematic in that kind of tourney.
That's cool. There are arguments each way, I just wanted to put the issues out there.
How many games are played between players from the north and the south? That's the key point when determining whether it should be one region or two. If there are a handful of players that attend both some "northern" and some "southern" events, that's probably enough to make it more efficient to be a single region; if it's rare for anyone from one half to play anyone from the other, then two regions makes more sense. It would be possible to have one region with two organisers, one responsible for the north and one for the south, presuming you could coordinate the sharing of information.
Anyway, I'll keep an eye on the thread and I'm very willing to help out in any way I can---I'm excited to have the NERV spreading. For example, if anyone wants to look through the spreadsheets to get a feel for what's involved, then PM me your email address and I'll send you a copy of the northeast ones.

So far only a handful of players have played in both North and South tourneys. I've tried to make it up to Orlando before, but something always comes up. Players down here have been going up north less and less, I think, though if I can finally get up there, I may bring more players with me. I think how much players are willing to travel for games is still a bit up in the air as locations and patterns are changing a bit.
Ollie, we have our big tourney down here this Saturday. If you want to send me your templates and such, I'd be happy to begin experimenting with them. Then, we can see how many players end up able to do NHSD up north and feel things out from there.

Great! Just PM me your email address. Also, it's possible to backdate to include earlier tournaments. The catch is that you need the head-to-head information for all the games and not just the standings or the number of wins and losses. But, even if you're unsure about whether you want to adopt the NERV, it might be worth saving that information until you make a decision.

I'm thinking based on how the players interact we would most likely be one region with two people coordinating the sharing of information over to the main registry. Simply because of the length of Florida and the driving distances only the NHSD and semi-annual tournament have people driving from the South up into the Orlando area. Otherwise it is pretty rare that people from the North and South mix it up on a regular basis or even a semi-regular basis. But there is that "we are Florida" thing that we tend to have going that kind of holds us all together still (we are the Florida family!).

Alright im back. This tourney is gonna be a fun one. I hope i make this one.
I don't mind which location the tourney is at because i live near orlando and don't mind the extra 90 minutes.
Florida NERV sounds cool. Can we use the results form previous tourneys in it? (if anyone has the records or if they are in old posts)
Reinforcements sound awesome. It will really require a good army choice going into the tournament. One question, if you have two common squads in your base army and another of the same common squad in your reinforcements do you still get penalized? (yes maybe?)
Time to start thinking which maps to choose. Ill probably play test a few and pick my favs soon.
One more question. I don't know if this has been answered in a previous post but isn't it against the rules to have a face down glyph of kelda? Because squad figures are not allowed to pass over it or land on it so hasbro made that rule.

We always turn the glyphs face up after the first initiative roll. Glyphs are meant to be tactical advantages not random events (a very loose paraphrase here of GBob, if I remember correctly).
The glyphs himsati has chosen are the same pool that GenCon is using and I think it is a great choice. A very subtle way to make uniques and heroes a bit more valuable. (I've seen a lot of games one and lost simply because of the Common Attack glyph.)
Anyhow, I can check, but I'm fairly sure it was Grungebob who suggested that glyphs are primarily meant to be face up, fwiw.

That is correct, one of the changes to tournament format for use with these is that before the first initiative is rolled (but after all setup and order markers are placed) the glyphs are turned right-side up; and yes this appears to be designed to make the first round very dynamic. Depending on which glyphs show up in which locations, players may suddenly start recalculating moves on the fly to see if they can use their existing order marker setup to get to a glyph or now ignore a glyph they were intending to reach originally.
I'm going to get some verification on how glyphs like Kelda are used in comparison to how the tourney rules have been run at least by us in the past.
EDIT - UPDATE 07/30/2009
Having chatted a few PM's to R˙chean the way he handles it at Gen Con (and in fact any tournament he runs) is to Set your armies, flip up the glyphs, then set order markers. So that is how we'll do it... all glyphs will be face-up and known before you set order markers for the first round.
Technically as he reminded me there is no set rules for that for a tournament, but since that seems to be the majority method chosen and is used for the Gen Con tournaments...

The tables are four by eight totalling six also, they have six or more comparable to what we've been using. The secondary tables maybe a little larger to Sci Fi's.

In order to be completely fair I have sent the following e-mail to both stores at the same time and will follow up with a phone call on Tuesday. I decided I wanted to put all questions in writing and send them the exact same questions to as to make sure that I didn't skip anything in a casual phone call to them this weekend. Here is what I've asked them...
---------------------
Good afternoon,
Both of your stores have (through individual players at heroscapers.com that have contacted me) shown an interest in hosting tournaments for Heroscape for our Florida player’s organization. As the tournament organizer for both the National Heroscape Day as well as the spring main tournament, I’d like to see if you might be able to answer some questions for me. I’ve been told that at least one of you may have attempted to contact me via e-mail but I haven’t received anything. If you would, go ahead and copy your reply to rickdon@aol.com and also to donr@pbso.org in order to assure that I receive your response. What I’d be most interested in doing (and what the Florida player’s organization seems to be in favor of) is having one of you host our fall tournament on October 17th and the other host our spring tournament (usually held in mid-late April – date to be set). We are currently looking to leave our current hosting FLGS in Orlando “Sci-Fi City”. Though they have always been gracious and accommodating with space, the store’s involvement in the tournament and their support of Heroscape itself has always been negligible; it is my hope to find one or two locations that are more “into” teaming with the Florida player’s organization for future tournaments.
So a few questions if I might:
1) Is your location available to host our tournament on October 17th for upwards of 32 players plus tournament organization space (usually 1 table)?
2) What are the size of your standard tables?
Most maps once built are typically in the range of 2’ x 3’, with a some slightly larger and once in a while slightly smaller. Then add in space for laying out player materials and rolling dice (or for dice towers) and normally a 30” x 72” table will hold one map, occasionally two maps.
3) We normally arrive at 9:30AM to start building maps, players begin arriving around 10:00AM, tournament typically starts at 11:00AM and I try to have us wrapped and breaking down the majority of the maps before 7:00PM (though a few players tend to stay a little later for casual gaming with some of the remaining maps). Is this a schedule you can accommodate?
4) Materials: Do you have available Heroscape sets that maps can be built from, or will we be required to bring all the materials? If you do, can you let me know roughly what you have available to build with.
5) Store Rules: Does your location have any specific rules, regulations, etc. that we should be aware of? For example, Sci-Fi City has X-Box systems and even when not in use no one may sit in those chairs; I am thinking of rules concerning outside food and drink, minors and rules concerning being accompanied by a parent, etc.
6) Prize Support: Do you engage in any form of prize support for your hosted tournaments? If so what kind (product giveaway, store certificates [physical/online], etc.)?
7) Snacks/Drinks: As many gaming stores carry a small variety of drinks and snacks (typically vending machines), do you also do this?
8 ) Parking: What is your parking situation like
9) Construction: Is there any construction (specifically road construction) taking place around your store or slated to begin taking place during the proposed time of the tournament?
10) Dining: Do you have any area restaurants/fast food locations within short walking distance of your location?
I thank you again in advance for your kind responses,
Sincerely,
Rick Don (Himsati)

Since folks might be missing the bold title above this line.. yes this is Armada's answers to my e-mail.... 8)
1 – Yes we have enough table space to accommodate that many players.
2 – Our standard tables are 4’x8’, we have 6 of those, which will be able to hold 2 maps side by side enough space to layout all game materials and roll dice. We have a few other regular tables that can be used for tournament management.
3 – Those times are not a problem
4 – Our store has roughly 10 Master Set 1, a couple Master Set 2, and a few of the other large box expansions open for use.
5 – Outside food and drink are welcome, provided the players clean up after themselves. We are a kid friendly store and keep an eye on the other players to make sure the language doesn’t get out of hand.
6 – We can always come to an arrangement on prizes, but generally anything with any sort of entry fee we do prize support with, whether it be store credit or product.
7 – We have chips, cookies, candy, ice cream and bottled water in the store for reasonable prices.
8 – There is enough parking in the plaza where we are to accommodate more than enough people
9 – There is not currently any major construction around our store.
10 – In the plaza we are in is a Cuban Restaurant, carry out Pizza, Thai food, a Dairy Queen and Pizza Hut within 5 minutes walking distance.

The convention happens in late February or early March. I have tried in previous years but haven't gotten many people. Maybe this year we will get lucky. Dude,
I just graduated USF Tampa this last May. Congrats. What is your area of study?
The St. Pete Campus is a little more specialized and you might have to drive to the Tampa campus for certain classes. Thats what ended up happening with my fiance. She did her entire Freshman year at the St. Pete campus but because of an excessive number of classes having to be taken at the Tampa campus and her mom changing jobs she ended up transferring to the Tampa campus. Worked out great for me since I didn't have to drive to St. Pete every week and only get to see my fiance (girlfriend at the time) once a week on Friday.
In any event, I hope Coolstuff gets back to Himsati soon so we can have an official vote. The guys at Armada keep asking me for updates on everyone's decision (they like to schedule things far enough in advance that they can inform their regulars about the tables being reserved that day)
They are also pushing really hard to build their store's Heroscape player base. They all love the game and stock a lot of it but me, Torog, and Rennix are the only guys I've seen buying it. They want to build interest for Heroscape in the area. 8)

Sorry Syvaris, but you've got to choose from these:

Nah, he's just being nozy. ;)
How dare NecroBlade butt into our thread? It's not like he started Florida Frenzy or anything like that!
I know, right? What a jerk.

Hi all, I'm a friend of Boondocksaint and 1Mmirg and reside in Naples, FL. My wife and I attend the tournaments 1Mmirg organizes in Ft. Lauderdale and we'd really like to make the trip north for NHSD this year. We also have friends in Tampa we could spend the weekend with, so my vote would be for the Tampa location.
I'll keep checking back to see which location will be hosting this year and I'll let you know when we're 100% certain we can make it. Hope to see you all on October 17th!

UPDATES:
A decision on location will be made this upcoming week.
As for maps, the maps listed in this thread are the maps for the GenCon tournament picked by the main Heroscapers staff. As has been happening over the last few years, we pick more official maps for the HS Day and then we tend to do player-created and slightly more experimental maps for the Spring tourney. Remember that we've been at this point before where we only had 6 weeks left and started talking about people submitting their own maps and such... it didn't work out very well due to the time constraints on getting everyone "on the same page" as it were. So as the tournament organizer, we are going to stick with the maps in post #2 of this thread. You are all welcome to throw anything and everything at the spring tourney, and I'd love to see if someone else has any ideas for a cool theme for it, etc.

Hey im not on much but I got to talk to Zealot and heard the news so i had to get on and voice my opinon.
Location: Tampa Armada Games for a few reasons:
1. Location from I-75 is a 5min drive at the most making it easy to find.
2. Staff at Armada is super friendly and supportive (have been known to play HS with us and let ppl stay to play till like 2am, not kicking us out like Sci-fi city did when it was closeing time)
3. Tables, these things are masive and really nice to play on, even have a cubby shelf which i use as my grave yard.
4. Plenty of stuff we can use to set up with (boards figures... me and Zeolot did a MetroCon just with a few of their pieces and had enough for like 20 armies and 4 huge maps)
5. As for the food question 5star pizza is right next store and lenny's cafe. Lenny's has great cubans but closes at 7 But, 5star pizza is open till 2am.
6.Really nice selection for buying... i get all mine from them and it's very nicly priced.
As for maps i like the maps from pass tourney's: T sunrise, Highways and Dieways, however Fire Isle might be nice too (love to see some jutons), Invasion, commonground and slash and burn would be my others.

Okay gang,
The location for the tournament is going to be Armada Games, I'm going to send them the final heads-up later today. I'll try to work something out with Cool Stuff Games for our spring tournament still.
Now, we need to start making determinations on the maps... Combing back through the thread here is how the maps stand so far:
# votes - Map Name
2 - Sentinel
3 - Slash and Burn
2 - Just Passing Thru
3 - Derelict
3 - Fire Isles
3 - Sidewinder
3 - Highways and Dieways
3 - Common Ground
1 - Fossil
1 - Ticalla Sunrise
People that voted so far:

Syvarris - I am truly sorry but for this tournament we are picking from the maps used at GenCon. When the spring tournament comes I will be more than happy to open the floor to any and all suggestions for maps from all over, including any self-designed ones. But especially at this point with the contention over the location slowing us down, we need to move forward on map selection quickly. My apologies.

I have no preference of map on which we play. Shall we get a final vote on maps within a week or two?
In regards to the map set-up lets keep in mind Armada has no lava or jungle sets in their collection. It shouldn't be a problem we have always gotten by regardless.
So the sooner we know how many and which maps the better. I know Zealot has at least two Volcarren sets. I have one and Rennix may have another.

karl with a k
September 11th, 2009, 05:56 PM
Strength of Schedule
Rate depends on how hard the people were that you played (hardness judged by record)
A+ are the figured that are rated as too good, you get less SOS if you have em.

Slight correction here, Armada DOES have Lava sets. I have 1 but I think that Armada has enough since we only have potential for 1 Lava related map anyway.

You'll be bringing one army, plus reinforcements to be added to it.

I think some army using either the 4th mass or the 10th reg, plus some melee would work. If you have the cash to pick up the wave 1 hero pack and 2 packs of romans you could have
Marcus
2X 10th reg
2X romans melee
Airborne Elite
Something to fill the spaces(Krav maybe)
I can lone you a set of Romans if you pick up the rest (as long as I get them back).
This army would be pretty good, of course I am no army making genius so make of it what you will.

Reinforcement question... I didn't see this asked yet, but my apologies if I missed it. Say I bring an army with 3 common squads to gain the SOS bonus. Then say I do well enough to advance to the semi-finals and bring in my 75 points of reinforcements. If my reinforcements are another common squad and bring my total to 4 of the same common squad, do I then lose the SOS bonus or would it not even matter at that point?

The SoS (Strength of Schedule) penalty is sort of unique to our tournaments in Florida, so it is whatever we (or more specifically, himsati) decides. I would guess that your position to see if you make the semifinals would not be affected by your reinforcements since they did not help you get there, but probably your final placing, and choice of prize, would be affected.
Kinda stupid question, Can my forces move through friendlies? Such as in the opening rounds can my farther back units move through those in front?
Yes, as long as they are not engaged with an opponent's figure.
Put me down as attending, possibly with my brother.

Sentinel
Just Passing Through
Common Ground
Slash and Burn
Fossil

Okay - Lots of fun questions in the last day or so....
KARL (Karl)
If you want the crazy man who does the wierd themes putting your army together I'll be happy to. I'll only be playing if we have an odd number of people, so the person getting the bye in a round doesn't sit around with nothing to do. I'm just going to run the tournament this time around. And if you will need a ride let us know, we have a lot of people that live in the area and I'm certain someone can swing by to get you and give you a lift there and back.
REINFORCEMENTS (rudyvalentine)
Any figures in your reinforcements will not be used during the first four main qualifying rounds, so they will not impact your SOS. However, as BurnyFlame has mentioned, if we do have some kind of oddball tie for 3rd and 4th place then the "adjusted" SOS would be used to break it if needed.
Personally I allow the remaining two players to play a game during the final to determine 3rd and 4th place while the other two play the final round for 1st and 2nd. So far no one has used the option, but I keep it there.
TERRAIN NEEDS (randomskyfears)
We'll know if we need people to bring terrain once the final map votes are done and Zealot and Torog have time to check with Armada one last time on a full available terrain count between themselves and the store.
RUNNING OVER YOUR FRIENDS (Syvaris)
As BurnyFlame has already mentioned you can move thru UN-engaged friendly units.
SIR GILBERT (BurnyFlame)
Added to list of A+ Units.
A+ Single Common Squad (BurnyFlame)
Having read through the threads on the A+ common squads, even one will impose the penalty. Having read thru their discussion threads and spider_poison's comments, the decision to make a unit A+ is based on the cost vs. effectiveness (plus synergy, etc.) of a single unit. The fact that they are so overly effective for the points is why everyone takes multiple units. For example there are a few units that are considered A+ by spider if you took multiple squads, but since the basis is on a single squad they have not made the A+ grade. An example would be the Knights of Weston that has long been in contention for A+ rating and has even had a few April Fool's Jokes done with them in the rating threads. And since it appears Jexik is not going to be reversing those criteria, I'm going to have let the penalty stand even for one squad.
Now, if the A+ category continues to expand and include more figures to where we approach having 10 figures in the category, there is more than enough to select from to make a lot of diverse armies (so we don't see the same 4 or 5 units all the time) and I think the SOS penalty should be dropped altogether at that point.

The final list of maps are:
Derelict, Highways and Dieways, Common Ground, Sentinel and Slash and Burn.
There were some ties for 4th and 5th place but in the end I looked at the clear top 3 and decided the following to break the tie and keep the maps diverse:
Just Passing Thru - We already have map using RTFF that are slightly similar
Fire Isles - We've used this map twice in the last two years already
Ticalla Sunrise - Has also been used before, is a fairly large map and Sentinel (which uses a mix of RTFF and SOTM) is already making use of a hive already.I'll edit the main post and list the maps. Zealot and Torog, looking at the maps, how many of what can we build to get the most out of Armada's tournament stock? Look at having to possibly build 3 of each map (I know that means we'll probably have to lug some RTFF because Highways and Sentinel both require it and Highways requires quite a bit of trees).

I have one of each set I'd be willing to bring.
(Note: All RotV and SotM are flocked via Grishnahk's tutorial, and Lava Field is flocked (though not painted) with a nice, shiny black rock gravel I found in Washington for a few bucks this summer. However, flocking tends to come loose quite a bit... I was kinda low on the varnish. I could probably pick up another can of varnish before the event if needed, but if you want me to either bring it as is or not bring it at all instead, just let me know.)

We could probably do some music at the event as long as we don't blast it and upset other customers at the store. I'll have my laptop as well to run the tourney with so sure why not, we can play some bits of music here and there.

I have Lord of the Rings the Complete Recordings (it's about 5gbs) and that music is just plain awasome. I also have the soundtracks to most of the Star Wars films (except EpII which had terrible music IMO). I also have alot of heavy instrumental symphony music that I use for D&D games. It's all great and sets a very nice mood.

I'd personally be fine with any music as long as...
1. We don't play any heavy metal or rap. Hate rap, and I just find metal too noisy. (I can live with metal, but I'd prefer little to none.)
2. It sounds good. Not too worried about this one, doubt anyone would bring crappy music ^_~
3. We have enough to not be playing the same few songs on loop over and over and over all day...
Syvaris
September 23rd, 2009, 04:50 PM
We would definitely have enough. The complete Lord of the Rings recordings is on the order of about 12 hours, and all of it is completely epic. For my two sense I would love to have more of this kind of music. No rock, rap, heavy metal, country, basically stuff without lyrics.

Yeah. My band actually plays a few pieces from the original LotR symphony (which came out many years before the movie), so I think I can get a picture. I'm perfectly fine with that; I actually think that would be pretty epic, so I am for it all the way ^_^

Because I am not on the west coast that often, I was thinking about trying to see some attractions during the FF3 weekend. How close is Armada to Busch Gardens? Any other places worth seeing?
I just checked and apparently Busch Gardens is having Howl-O-Scream that Saturday night. http://www.buschgardens.com/bgt2/Explore/Events.aspx (http://www.buschgardens.com/bgt2/Explore/Events.aspx)
Perhaps we could get a 'Scapers group going there after the tournament? Sounds like fun (although it is not for little kids).

I doubt I'd go, though. I'd love to, but convincing my parents to drive me to the tourney to play with a bunch of people I've never met face-to-face was hard enough. Convincing them to go with those same strangers to Busch Gardens at night , and at Howl-O-Scream, no less, is a whole 'nother story. :P
Edit: Just for clarification, I've been there before, but that was with a group of friends. I'm not really very confident about my parents allowing me to go with a bunch of people I've never met in person... :P

I have a question about the prizes, who gets them? Those who get into the semi-final, those who get into the final, or only the final winner?

Everyone gets at least one prize. 1st place gets first pick, then 2nd and so forth.. Once we've gone through the entire group, we start back at 1st place again. I do usually reserve one particular prize for 1st place out of the prize table so that first place gets at least two prizes, possibly two.
Oh yeah, we owe a trophy to last year's winnner that Oncara made, he can't make one this year, but he's sending out the trophy for last year's winner.

Oh, sorry about that Himsati, I've been busy with getting my car fixed and moving into a new apartment in the same week :p.
Running the number of needed maps with the terrain that Armada, Me, Torog, and Rennix have; we have enough terrain for 3 of each map listed. So as far as I can tell, we don't need anyone else to bring anything...
If people still want to bring stuff to build their own maps for recreational play thats fine, but we should have enough for the tourney's needs.
As long as we don't have a surprise "Final" map or anything that I don't already know about. Torog, Rennix, and I will be building all the maps the night before so we can just start registration as soon as everyone gets there...

I'm fairly certain we don't have a definitive "attending" or "prize" list right now. In that light, I would like to recommend/remind people to bring their own armies as well as any terrian they see fit to bring (convenience or whatever else) in the event that we have numerous suprise entries in the tournament and we need to build more maps (we currently have enough official space for 30 contestants but there is no telling what the exact number of people will be at this point).

I still have some questions:
1. I like whole card scoring and ALS. However, your example of the Airborne Elite & Rechets is unclear. What happens if "time" is called, and they have not dropped, and you have more points than your opponent if they are included, and less if they are not?
2. That brings me to how to call time. I have always had a big problem with stopping in the middle of the round. I say that 5 minutes before the end of the round, we simply say "last round" and play a complete round from there.
Also:
3. How do ties get scored?
4. Can we have additional time for the semi-finals, and no time-limit for the finals?
5. What else does Armada have there?
6. Who is staying after for extra games?
7. Does anyone have extra figures available to borrow? (maybe not for me, but in general)

1. I believe it is that if they have not dropped they don't count as being killed and they don't count towards your alive points. (im not sure though)
2. I'm not sure how the round time works but I like your idea.
3. Ties I believe are just counted as ties. lets say 3 wins 2 loses and a tie it would be like your record is 3-2-1 Although ties are very unlikly to happen.
4. Additional time would probably be allowed if we are ahead of schedual, if not then obviously we dont want to be locked in to armada.
5. I havnt been there but as far as I know its your average hobby shop, all kinds of games and stuff and they have terrain that we are using i think.
6. I cant answer for everyone so who knows.
7. I think a lot of people have extra figs. Himsati is allowing me to use his given I come and Syv said he would be willing to let me use some.

1) The rules concerning Airborne Elite and Rechets are still the same as they have been at every tournament. If they didn't make it on the board they simply aren't counted in any ALS score, it would not affect your ALS in any way.
Example: Time is called and you killed off 250 points worth of your opponent's cards and he killed off 300 of yours. If the Airbone haven't dropped, you still only killed off 250 points of your opponent's army. If the Airbone have dropped, ... you didn't kill them so you still only killed off 250 points of your opponent's army. Your ALS is 250 either way.
2) This is an issue that still circulates and gets discussed and has pros and cons on both sides. The best explanation given to me many years ago during CCG tournaments when I was tasked with learning how to run them is that some people can play multiple rounds in x minutes and some people still can't finish a single round in x minutes. Plus with our rounds, 5 minutes is about 10% of the game's time and stalling tactics can come into play. When time is called the current turn is finished and we end, that's the standard method for doing it to remain as fair as possible to everyone and not encourage any form of stalling, colluding, rushing thru and making mistakes, etc.
3) If there is an absolute tie (Wins, SOS, ALS are all exactly identical) then we have a complete tie, which is not an issue during the four swiss rounds. The only time this could be an issue is if two people tie 100% for the 4th spot in the semi-final (a tie for say the third spot would just be chosen as the 3rd and 4th members in the semi-final so no problem there). If there happens to be an absolute tie for the 4th spot then I have the unenviable task of breaking it. I will look at total number of A+ units, whether or not dropped units were used, etc. in order to make a fair decision. Fortunately the odds of 2 players out of 20 - 30 people, having completely identical scores after 4 swiss rounds with 500 points armies are ... exceedingly low (less than 5%).
4) Semi-finals no, finals can get extra time yes (but the final has always finished faster than all the other rounds so far). But I'm not going unlimited as we are not doing a 4-hour final or something insane like that. But the final can go over the 50-minute mark since I can get all the rest of the rankings done during the final and be ready to award prizes as soon as the final is over. The remaining players are only counted against each other during the last round and it doesn't affect SOS from semi-final and final players.
5) I'm not sure what you mean by that question? Do you mean other activities going on that day, other things to do in the store, surrounding stuff? I'm certain Zealot or Torog can help answer this since they are frequent visitors there.
6) I am staying for a little while to do a game or two.. and sure I'll bring my Marvel Sup3rS0n1c!

Okay, cool! I'll probably have time for another game or two also, if anyone else is interested.
And I'm tempted to put a teaser up eventually...
(don't expect it to reveal much though, you'll have to come to the event to see it's epicness before I release it to the public ^_^)
But, in case I don't get around to it, here's some more worded spoilers...
-It relates heavily to Utgar, though it is primarily for Marvel play
-it can be played classic, but Marvel is preferred
-15 start spaces
-Two alternate names and forms, one for Marvel and one for classic, but only one thing is changed terrain-wise
-I will be using the classic scape version, because it looks more epic IMO
-it is not BoV or BoM compatible, though one set may be easily removed in order to allow it to be
-I plan on introducing an optional special terrain rule, involving terrain dropping...
Yeah, I was kiind of generous with them, but it's definitely easier than a pic ^_^
Also, what are you doing for start zones?

Still a few ideas:
2. I don't see any valid pros to stopping mid-round in your answer, but I have experienced many negatives. If "fairness" is what we want, than stopping mid-round can give someone one more turn than their opponent, which is not fair at all, and does encourage "stalling." I saw this happen just last tournament, and the extra attack changed a game's outcome.
If instead we say after 45 minutes:"one initiative roll and one round left" that would let everyone know exactly when the stopping point is, and they can plan accordingly. An alternative would be to say "finish the current round" if you don't want to go over 50 minutes.
3. I think you misunderstood this question, but karl with a k may have answered it. I meant for an individual game, how will ties get scored, as a win or a loss? You tie if you both destroy the same number of points, or pull a self-destruct. I only bring this up because it was a problem in other tournaments, where somehow two people who were 3-1-1 were ranked below (or the same as) players who were 3-2.
4. We can do it however you want, and I am happy to see the final be given extra time, and understand that the semi-finals have to finish on time, but can we allow an extra 10 minutes for the 5th round of people not playing in the semi-finals? I see know harm in this, as those players have nothing to do after that round, and also the extra 75 points makes for slower games which I would rather see finished. You would still have plenty of time to calculate standings, I believe.
5. I meant what other games does the store carry, but I'll wait for someone else to tell me.

2. It really doesn't come in to play much. We all just play for fun and I don't remember any stalling happening. Although I like the idea of at 45 minutes say 1 more round. Himsati is the judge though.
3. :D I still think it is so unlikely that there really ins't a reason to worry about it. If it happens then we will figure it out but no need to argue over something which porbably won't even happen.
4. If your playing in the semi-finals them what does it matter? You can take the next hour of time if you want because the finals can still go on with you......or I am reading it wrong?
5. Yea, just wait....Zealot will probably say something next time he posts.

For those of you out-of-towners I'd like to give you some landmarks to aid in finding Armada Games. After turning south on 56th Street (from Fowler Avenue) You'll travel a short distance, maybe a quarter of a mile if that. Go past the Outback, then brick apartment buildings, just past that is a tan-ish shopping center. Turn right into the shopping center and Armada is at the end closest to the laundromat. If you pass the Dairy Queen you have just passed it. It is a bit hard to see from the street.
Looking forward to seeing all the familiar faces and new ones too. Cheers.
Burny they have two large bookcases loaded with a dichotomy of games. Anything from boardgames (Starcraft etc.) to card games (munchkin etc.) to some miniature games. There's far too many for me to try and name. You'll just have to check them out and see what you're interested in.

That won't happen. A tie is a tie is a tie in terms of completely equal kills and time is called or mutual death of last card. However a 3-1-1 beats a 3-2 in the system, somebody forgot to factor ties into their Wins - SOS - ALS scoring in those tournaments. I factor them into the system.

How much extra time we can give depends on how things go, if we start running really late for some reason during the tourney I'd rather give preference to the final having it if needing it.

I was gonna say that they can have as much time since the won't be in it however SOS is factored so yea they couldn't just take a lot of time...

Hey guys,
I've been lurking on Heroscapers for a while and I stumbled upon this thread. I'm in Orlando but thinking about making a trip down to have some fun in Tampa. I do have a question about the tourney, but more along the lines of the atmosphere of it. I've been to a few TCG tourneys in the past - Magic mostly - and the atmosphere has been pretty cut-throat. Honestly, it turned me off from these types of events. I'm hoping HS tourney's aren't like that.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind being competitive and I wouldn't be looking for newbies treated with anything special... and, really... I guess what I'm trying to figure out is if it's going to be more like a bunch of friends going and having fun or a bunch of militants looking for the next lamb to slaughter. Basically, I don't mind losing (and losing big) but I don't want to drive 1.5 hours and feel like I totally wasted my time and didn't have any fun.
Also, how would one go about being put on the Florida mailing list?
Thanks in advance! -Donja

Welcome, Donja!
The tournament atmosphere is far from cut-throat, but it is very exciting. Everyone is trying to win each game of course, but most people value having fun as well. The fun factor is emphasized by placing the "restriction" on certain units, like Raelin, Q9, and the Deathreavers.
You won't find restrictions (unless made by the company) in many card game tournaments, where instead you'll find everyone brings really overpowered decks. The HeroScape point limit makes all the games more fair and fun.
As for a Florida players "list," you should check out:
http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=4343
but just follow the thread you are now reading, and look for the next central Florida tournament linked from here.
I hope to see you there!

Donja, my experience with Heroscape tournaments has always been positive. I've never left a tournament wishing I hadn't gone or feeling like I didn't have fun. I've never had the chance to play with the Tampa area group, but I've done three tournaments and several game days in South Florida and the players are the nicest people I've encountered in a competitive setting (I have no reason to doubt the same is true of the Florida Frenzy players, because it seems to be true of this entire community).
I would say you can expect some great games with helpful, friendly people.
Hope to see you there.

Donja, I started the Florida Frenzy tournaments (with much help from other members) to be at least as fun as they are competitive, and though I'm no longer down there, I trust these guys 100% to continue that tradition (everyone I played against was a blast, and I know those I didn't get to play were, too). :)
Plus, karl is my little* brother, so he BETTER behave.

Thanks for the responses. It sounds like the type of thing I'm looking for. I checked in with the wife (those of you who are married will understand ;) ) and it looks like this weekend is going to be a no-go for me. Apparently she wants me to go somewhere with these little people that live in my house and eat my food. The good news is that I do get a tax deduction from them living here.
Good luck to all of you going and may you roll skulls when you need 'em and shields when you don't.
