View Full Version : Sam Raimi to direct Warcraft movie!

I've been worrying ever since I heard that a WoW movie was in the works. Dungeons & Dragons and Dragonlance were pretty bad, and I couldn't see how a Warcraft movie would be any different. Then comes the news that Sam Raimi will be directing a live action Warcraft movie (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2009/07/22/sam-raimi-for-a-world-of-warcraft-movie-a-big-mistake-or-the-game-adaptation-weve-been-waiting-for/). With enough freedom, Sam Raimi could possibly pull off a decent movie.

I'd still be pretty wary. The Dungeon Siege movie was terrible (except for Burt Wreynolds). The second DnD movie was OK, but still not very good.
I'm really not sure if a decent movie can be made from a video game while keeping it's spirit. (Well, iirc Doom Wasn't bad . . . .)

I'm with you, Gulp. I had heard rumors of a World of Warcraft movie but assumed it would be sub-par. Now that my man, Sam Raimi, is on board, we might have a blockbuster on our hands. I'm actually pretty excited about it, now.

Doom wasn't very good, either. For video games made into movies I think you have to go with Resident Evil as the gold standard.

The original Tomb Raider was pretty good.
Who can forget this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4f/Supermariobros.jpg).
Also, can you imagine if the Wing Commander movie featured Mark Hammil?

Tomb Raider is with Eragon in my personal Hall of Shame - I fell asleep during both movies.
As for Warcraft... I'm happy with Raimi as a director, but I think it'll need a good scriptwriter to really make it work.

There was a thing on slashdot some time ago asking if video games would ever be considered legitimate art by mainstream consumers. I made a comment saying that I thought it would take a critically acclaimed movie based on a video game. IF the script is good then I could see that getting a little closer.

The origional Mortal Combat and Silent Hill are probably my favorite video game movies.
Resident Evil 1 is third.
Super Mario Brothers is probably the worst, followed by Street Fighter.

Blasphemy! While Super Mario Bros wasn't a great movie (if it's even a good movie is debatable), it's a fun comedy-adventure movie, with decent special effects. I own this one of DvD, and I still find it very watchable.

It is just that my Opinion is WoW is a bad game, so they can't possibly make a good movie out of it. What will the movie be about? Lame quests like "kill twelve of these, then 6 higher levels of these"? Oh, it will be about waiting 2 hours to go on a raid! Or even going on a raid. Yeh, nothing good there.

IMO, WoW's backstory is one of the greatest backstories I've seen in ANY online game(Including Guild Wars).
~Gorthan313, who fails to see why anybody would make a movie about killing X number of X creature.....And hopes that OY! IH doesn't take this as a criticism....

I read the backstory for WoW back when I played it, and I will say it is pretty solid, and at least has the potential of being a good movie.
I would say though, that that is only if they stick to the backstory. If they wander into the stuff that is in-game, I am more doubtful of the movie's potential.

Spoken like someone who has never played any of the Warcraft games (excepting the first, it had no story).
Any video game movie pretty much fails however when they try to make the game into the movie, instead of keeping the spirit of the story and making that the movie.

Don't forget to add someone that also loves Guild Wars story a lot better.

When I speak of Warcraft's story, I am not only speaking of WoW.
Guild Wars does have overall better presentation of story, but every single MMO is going to be totally shamed by Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO that Bioware is doing.
Now, how about a Mass Effect movie?

Actually, I own Warcraft 3, and I finally realized what you meant. The story is pretty good. I understand how all the races got where they were in WoW.

Yeah WOW had a good story (Warcraft 3) that they managed to ^%#& up in WoW pretty badly. So how much are you willing to bet we get either
A.) A character with a chainsaw hand
or
B.) A Bruce Campbell cameo

It's Raimi - the answer is, of course, B.

Agreed on the Eragon part.
I'm glad Raimi is in charge... Now if only they would cast Alan Rickman as the bad guy...

Ahh now Eragon it burns us precious it burns us. Eragon has got to be one of the worst anything to film movies ever. It killed my like of Eragon. Hopefully Warcraft the film will be good, Heres hoping the Dark Tower films will be passable at least.

Whoa! Crazy talk!
Warcraft has one of the richest storylines in the history of gaming, if not THE richest. We're talking about a franchise that's over 15 years old, that's spanned several great games full of rich details. Movies are usually about a story, not about sitting down and playing the game on the computer, so I think you'll be safe there.
That the movie will be good, if done well, is a no-brainer in my opinion. Although I was rather hoping for something that was all computer graphics, if they do the live action one right, it will do well.
And Aldin, my buddy Oog nominated you for SotW and rightly so, but to FALL ASLEEP watching Angelina in Tomb Raider 1? You are a special case my friend!

I am not a fan of any video game movies. I thought the 1st Resident Evil movie was ok, but the sequels were awful. I still don't think I'd watch the first one again. Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, Doom, they just suck, and that dude who said he OWNS SMB on dvd, way to be the only guy to buy that!
If I could think of more to bash I'd write them down, but thankfully, I have forgotten.
I just wish these movies could be more story driven over gratuitous action and violence. It's like these dudes are so bored by the script they are about to shoot that they have to throw in random explosions and robots to spice it up. Just abandon the project. If you the director thinks that it is boring, so do we.
And that Uwe Boll "character", don't even get me started on that idiot. That dude made movies that were supposed to fail due to crazy insurance scams/laws in Germany, and then he DEFENDS himself like he's got integrity? Come on dude, we know you suck, YOU know you suck, even DOGS know you suck, just admit it and get it over with.
WoW can be good based on one fact. The game doesn't put one particular hero in charge of saving the world. They can make this movie about almost anything, and that is a good thing. No tired character back story, no "loved" characters that people will be disappointed with, just a script set in the "World of Warcraft".
It's brilliant really.
Also, I'll probably never watch it. Who knows.

WoW may have you doing a lot of quests, but the story in end-game raiding is superb. Sam Raimi has just left a bad taste in my mouth after producing Grudge 1,2 and 3, directing Drag me to Hell, and directing Spiderman 3. I mean, Evil Dead was beyond fantastic and next to Phantasm is the greatest horror series ever, but I dunno if he can tackle Illidan...
