View Full Version : 30 Days

My clock says 30 days so many hours until the doors open at 10 AM. That’s close enough for me….
For that one fraction of a second, you were open to options you had never considered. That is the exploration that awaits you... not playing Scape for 96 straight hours and gathering LARPer Funk... but charting the unknown possibilities of gaming.
30 Days until the Best Four Days in Gaming.
If you are lucky enough to be going, consider the following. Look beyond the Halls of Valhalla. Take the time to EMBRACE this living beast that is GenCon. Even if for one brief moment consider all the other possibilities of gaming existence. You never know what undiscovered gem is waiting for you to discover it. Revel is the diversity of the Geek, the Dweebe, the social introvert, and the main stream cooperate sell out. (Even the Booth Babes and Girls in chain mail if you must) This is a time and a place where ALL are welcomed and respected. Become one with the masses. Thrive off its energy and give your own to help it grow. What ever the reason you are going whether it is to do battle and lay waste to your enemies and walk away as the grand champion or pick up the latest game…..no matter win or lose or new game in hand or not……….ENJOY IT! This only happens once a year. Before you know it four days will be gone in the blink of an eye or a roll of a die. Savor each waking moment.
Please take to heart the above, and annual :gencon: , comments. Scape won’t be around forever. It’s a “gateway” game designed to get you into the hobby. Take the time to do just that.
Most importantly what ever you do HAVE FUN doing it. Stay up too late, only get 4 hours of sleep a night, and get together in “Meat Space” with your virtual friends. And for everyone’s sake SHOWER every day.
Game ON!

It never fails when I sit down for lunch or a snack that a hydrophobic troglodyte will sure enough sit down at the table next to me.

I agree with it all Hahn - I am looking forward to exploring the place this year and not just scape, vendors hall , and game library.
Although that is still my main focus. I am not ready to dress up just yet, but I was thinking I should have a camera?

Um, Jim, the picture you posted was seriously flawed. The point of aim was about 10 inches too high.
I, for one, am soaking up all the 'scape I can, and with the exception of the "Main Event" I am playing every last one I can. There's plenty of time to Game-it-Up with bro's and ho's after hours, and the less time I spend on the floor, the less currency that will flood from my wallet.
And you, Sir Hahn, are going to be in drunken stupor with me for the entire time. :-D

Your mom's a gateway game.
I say this after I just bought a ton of other board games in the last two weeks. I intend to play an absurd amount of Heroscape tournaments and play other games as well over the 4 days.

Well, here's a few ways (one of which I am planning...)
1. 20-oz Dasani or Aquafina bottle
1/3 Sprite
2/3 Vodka2. 20-oz Mountain Dew Bottle
1/4 Midori
1/4 Sweet and Sour Mixer
1/8 Marachino Cherry or Grenadine
3/8 Squirt Soda, or 7-Up SodaThe first may get you busted, but the second looks and smells exactly (almost, at least) like Mountain Dew.

So are the demo tables at each booth or is there a place all demos are held? Also can someone explain the open gaming thing? You can check out games with your badge I think I read somewhere but cant seem to find any details.
Drumline (and anyone else interested): Im signed up for 3 HS events HoB, Capture the Flag, Main Event, and I plan on at least watching Day 2 of the main event if I dont make it. So other than that my schedule is completely open and Id be more than happy to try out some games with you or anyone else.

Your first year going? Deer in the head lights. There is so much going on you can't see it all. Just walk around and make notes for next year.
Most game companies try and have demo areas. FFG being the biggest and the best of the lot.
Open Gaming? Not sure but maybe you are referring to the Ballroom 500 game area. For 1 generic tix you can check a game out of the huge game library and play it on an open table.

Gen Con Indy Mobile works great off-line. Search the events you’re interested in and go. Attendees will also be able to “mark” events as favorites and tell their friends about events they are attending. The application will also feature integration with Facebook and Twitter, popular social networking sites and maps of all the venues. hey Stub - The vendors hall is huge, so many companies doing demo´s - just a great time.
The libray is a generic ticket ( $2 ) per game to take out and play, but for $20 you get a unlimited Number of games the whole weekend, so if you big into the board games that is your ticket I tell you. Over 300 games, maybe 400 there for you to try, plus just hanging out there asking to get in on a game is very easy.
My3rd year, but the first was way to long ago in Mil., so this is my 2nd and I want to say I have my GC legs under me, but I am still going to be in owe since last year it was just HS and the vendors hall, this year I am checking it all out!

water works - played as a kid so more for old memories

Truth and others that have tried it say it's like a miniatures game put into a card game, and from the looks of things it has similar aspects to Heroscape. If launch sets are available this GenCon I'll absolutely check it out and get it. I love the fact it isn't a random buy, like Heroscape, as in you know what you're getting and each pack is always the same.

Yeah I saw that you won, congrats. A unique army too. It will take a while to come up with a definate army for the main event; at least longer than it will for the others. This is the third year that I've had them mail mine and I've never had a problem. They arrived last week (maybe the week before) -- my badge, my son's badge, and the event tickets all were there and correct.

Mine arrived in the mail a couple weeks ago too. This is my third year attending GenCon, we've always purchased the tickets to arrive in the mail, and they've has always been successful.

I think what Hahn is getting at is that even if they don't screw your badge/tickets up you now run the risk of forgetting to pack them or losing them before or while in transit.

And Why Is That, oh MASTER OF ALL THINGS GENCONIOUS? Do I really want to have to stand in line?
Stand in line? hell last year I walked up around 10 AM , showed my ID and got my stuff.
No say you're a real douche bag and you leave your stuff at home. I mean you just go to the help booth and they give you a replacement badge.....WRONG! You're SOL. and you have to pay full cost, $75, to get a badge.

The will call and walk up sale windows are actually very quick and efficient provided you know what you want before you get to the front of the line.

I'm wearing mine, (in a plastic bag for showers), around my neck until Gencon. I figure if I'm going to fit in, I'd better have some unnaturally bad Gamer Funk since I'm naturally "oh so fresh and so clean-clean".

Do IDs need to be up to date? For example my license has expired but with moving I have not had the chance to get a new one. Do I need to put this at the top of my to do list or is an expired license going to be ok?

I "assume" that you have a will call tix?
This sounds like something that could be better answered by :gencon: staff, I've never had this issue. You better call them first thing Monday as they leave the office for :gencon: on Wednesday.

A picture ID is no less a picture ID simply because it's expired.

I think if I am reading his original question right is hey my ID still has my old addy of 101 Main street, but when I bought the will call ticket it I used my current addy of 202 Elm to buy the ticket. That's where i think he would run into an issue.

I know once I went to the bank to cash a check and I used an expired ID and they wouldn't accept it. I thought it was BS but that was the way it was. I'd get a new ID just to be safe

Technically, an expired ID is no longer a valid ID because, well, it has expired. The legal period that the ID is valid is from the date of issuance to the expiration date.

Well, I'm already in Indy (well technically 15 miles west of downtown, but close enough). In 7 days I'll be loading up the van to take the terrain for all the maps downtown. Any one want to come out to Plainfield and help carry boxes, boxes, and more boxes up a flight of stairs? ;) I'll have to make sure I get my son to help bring them up Tuesday night.
Let's just hope the basement doesn't flood between now and then -- it came close yesterday; some areas in central and southern Indiana had over 7 inches of rain. Our power was out for 4 hours, but the little portable generator kept the sump pump running.

I'm afraid that we'll be lucky if we make it out that way by very late Tuesday - we will most likely be staying over in Ohio, a few hours drive from Indy Tuesday night. But I will most likely be in town in time to help set up for the tourney!

I drove through downtown Indy today and saw they are already putting up the Welcome Gamers flags.
Checked the weather forecast, too. Right now Thursday looks like it will be the hottest day at 83.

83 sounds great. I had been told that it was usually hot and humid there, even though 83 is a bit hot for me, it's not too unbearable, even if it is humid. I well be there around noon on Wedsnday, so I probably could help with some setups, however it's also my first time attending and I want to really get settled in above all. Also was hoping for a game of Arkham horror Wednsday night, still if someone picks me up at the airport around 12:30 I could help with the setup until the others arrive for Arkham horror. I think otherwise my ride from the airport won't be there till later and I'll either have to wait for him or pay a cab or something.

I haven't worked out all the details with Rychean, but I'll probably be heading downtown between 2:00p and 2:30p on Wednesday (I think setup is starting around 3:00p). I'll be driving right by the airport, so may be able to give you a ride then -- but I'll be going straight to the convention center -- not any hotels.
Also, if anyone is staying at one of the hotels out at the airport (i.e., ones in Plainfield or on Ronald Reagon/Ameriplex Parkway), I can provide rides to and from downtown. Of course you would be on my schedule -- which is more of the early to bed and early to rise; yet I'm still not healthy, wealthy, or wise? ;)

Where exactly did you want to set up Arkham Horror? I think Kathy and I might be down for that, as long as we give priority to setting up Heroscape.

Well, that won't up to me, I don't have Arkham Horror, I've just been talking to several people that are interested in playing it and Wendsday night and Sunday night are about the only times that would be possible. I know Drumline(numbers) was going to bring it and I think the expansion to, but we don't have a for sure about playing that one yet. Both people I'm sharing a room with are interested so our hotel is a possibility, although we are closer to the airport than the convention hall. I don't really care where we play as long as I can get back to my room that night and as many people as want to play get the chance. I'd gladly dedicate to setting up just to play it. Most likely what I will do is since setup isn't until 3 I will go to my room first and unpack and coordinate from there, I'm pretty sure I will have no problem being at the set up at 3.
On a side note, there has been alot of talk about drinking on here. I don't drink but have no problem being a driver for those that are. I don't want to just sit around Applebee's doing nothing while others are drinking though. I came to play games.
