I watch a lot of TV, when I say a lot, I mean...A LOT. Probably too much TV. There are a lot of good shows returning this fall as well as new shows that look to have some promise. What show are you most looking forward to (that is of course if you watch TV)?
Here is the list of all the shows I will be trying to watch this Fall.
New Shows
Standoff 5-Sep
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip 18-Sep
Jericho 20-Sep
Kidnapped 20-Sep
Shark 21-Sep
Heroes 25-Sep
20 Good Years 4-Oct
The Nine 4-Oct
Returning Shows
Bones 30-Aug
House 5-Sep
Survivor 14-Sep
Amazing Race 17-Sep
How I met your Mother 18-Sep
Two and a Half Men 18-Sep
Criminal Minds 20-Sep
CSI 21-Sep
My Name is Earl 21-Sep
The Office 21-Sep
Numb3rs 22-Sep
Lost 4-Oct
BattleStar Galactica 10-Oct
Not on the list are Theif and Scrubs, I need to find out if those are coming back and when.
I am most looking forwar to Battlestar Galactica and after just having watched the Pilot I am looking forward to Heroes as well.
Are there any other shows I should know about? :D

Nether, have you seen the "real" "Office"?
* comic book store guy voice*
"Funniest Show Ever"
*End voice*
I dop like the "new", Carrel "Office", but your kidding yourself if you think it's gonna be around much longer.
NBC won't be able to hold Carrel much longer.
Take it to the bank.
I watch a lot of Football.
So I have to keep it to Lost, BSG, and whatever HBO comedy is running at the time.

For the new series this Fall, I am looking forward to "Heroes". As for the returning series, it has already started, "Prison Break". Followed closely by "Lost" and "BattleStar Galactica". Although my current favorite series has already gone on its Fall hiatus until February, "Monk".

The Office first and foremost, though I will also be watching Lost and Survivor probably, and I'm pretty stoked for Heroes.
You need to see the rest of the British office Nether. The uncomfortableness is taken to a whole new level in season two, and the christmas party is a great way to end a show.

If you've missed Vanished, nether, you should check it out. It's the latest in the 24 line and I'm lovin' it. My wife and I could not stand the slow pace of Prison Break and gave up on it, but Vanished has been awesome.
BSG is the one that I'm most looking forward to, hands down. The Caprica show might be worth a look. I also see that Sci Fi is developing another show that Richard Hatch developed, The Great War of Magellan, see the trailer here (http://www.greatwarofmagellan.com/). I saw an early pilot for this in 2001 and it looked like it had potential. I was also blessed to have seen the pilot he made for his vision of a continuation of the original BSG, which would have been awesome!!!
Monk is a constant favorite in my house along w/24. I noticed that you didn't list Desperate Housewives, my own personal guilty little pleasure. We're all hooked on Lost.
I'm anxious to see Heroes. I'd love to see more Who Wants to Be a Superhero and I guess that The Shield is winding down (my other personal fav).
Oh and one more, I'm totally hooked on Blade. This is my favorite show right now.

Wow, 180° the other direction from you on this one ninthdoc. I found the "Let's have the FBI find a mysterious 'symbol' tattoo on the dead kidnapper and lets let the FBI find out it was put there after the kidnapper died 30 minutes ago." Way too contrived (the producers wanted a Lost clone sooo bad) for my tastes.
I admit Prison Break is indeed a rip off of the 24 "Perils of Pauline" formula, but I never (repeat that for emphasis), never found it to have a slow pace - The very first episode Michael gets a toe cut off with garden shears. I like this show because the violence doesn't pull puches and there are consequences to that violence. I breath of fresh air from the A-Team type violence forced down our throarts during the 70-90s where bullets flew everywhere and no one ever got hurt ... Yeah, great lesson for kids ... Ooops, sorry, I got caught in a wrong tangent there ...

I watched Supernatural, which actually got much better towards the end of its first season as it drifted from its previous "Monster of the Week" formula to a more continuos story arc theme. However, I am really surprised that it would return but not Invasion or Surface, both were much more involved storylines. How exactly they are bringing this back is a question as the brothers and their father were shot, stabbed and demon scratched. Rushing towards a far away hospital, they are blind sided by a demon driven 18 wheeler which flattened the car!

Actually, having worked in a detention center setting for 3 years in my past, I found the plot, story, and situations in Prison Break to be droll, ridiculous, and irritating. As for the "violence doesn't pull puches" I found this to be more contrived and purely for shock value. If you want a good prison show, check out Oz.
This is not to say that I can't be guilty of watching a show that is utterly for shock value and having no basis in reality. I mentioned The Shield earlier, too. ;) I find The Shield to be cathartic, but Prison Break bored me and put me to sleep so many times, I lost count. http://aetos.it.teithe.gr/~argoul/a/smiley_f/sleeping/sleep012.gif

Returning - Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Prison Break (probably in that order; BTW, AFAIK the first series of PB seemed a bit slow in parts because it was *supposed* to run for 13 episodes - when it did really well in previews and the first couple of weeks, they very quickly took the decision to extend it).
New -
Heroes, of course.
Smith looked interesting in the opening 5 minutes - I'll have to watch the whole thing.
Justice is an interesting show, too - sort of CSI meets legal drama. I find Victor Garber very watchable. He almost smiles in this, too.
I suspect that standoff will get very old, very fast.

Never, ever expect to be entertained by a show based on what you actually do for a living. Trust me on that one - my occupation crops up in more than it's fair share of TV dramas, and we have to fight off huge crowds of applicants every year as a result - and face bitter disappointment from the ones that make it through the admissions/training, once they realise it's not like it is on TV. I'll bet this goes for just about any occupation that gets featured on telly. And the corollory is that they can't get away with making a series about working in a widget factory and make it look glamourous, exciting, well-paid - the audience *knows* that the work is none of those things, and starts chanting "bull****" before the pilot is over.
"Next week on "Police Procedural Drama", the junior partner of the patrol gets to wash the vomit out of the squad car while the older one drinks instant coffee and fills in paperwork". Do not expect this kind of honesty any time soon. Modern TV is about selling a myth as much as the A Team ever were - it's just a more sophisticated package these days, with no more basis in reality. And don't get me started on "reality" shows. They're not real either. The good ones are just an extreme sort of gameshow (a genre which has been present on telly for as long as organised programming); the bad ones are as false as any soap.

Okay, now I mostly agree with this but not entirely. Most people know my job, but I can honestly say that there are police shows that I like, either for their closeness to accuracy or their sheer cathartic fantasy. Here are short lists of each by category (in no particular order). We'll call it ninthdoc's Guide to Police Dramas.
Close to realism:
Homicide: Life on the Street
NYPD Blue
The Wire
Oz
High Incident
Robbery Homicide Division (very sad this one left so soon)
Law and Order: SVU
Law and Order: Criminal Intent
Cathartic fantasy:
The Shield
High Incident
The Wire
Cold Case
Miami Vice (still like this show)
Ones that should be obliterated from existance:
Everything ever created that is related to CSI (I hate all these w/a passion!)
Cop Rock
Ryan Caulfield: Year One (OMFG, make it stop!)
You may notice that I mentioned some in both "like" categories. This is b/c the duplicates may have some major fantasy elements, but have some very valuable realistic points as well.

OK, perhaps I was OTT when I used the word "entertained" - I can get a laugh out of Deed as much as the next man. But Deed, Kavanagh and the rest close to reality? Not a chance. And Justice *definately* falls into the catagory of cathartic fantasy. Maybe things are very different in the States, but I couldn't see a single point in the first two eps I've watched that rang any sort of a bell with how we do things over here.

Im looking forward to more of "The Wire" and "Prison Break".
The Wire I genuinely enjoy, and Prison Break is entertaining.
Also the finale to Deadwood next year, and the continuation of the the Sopranos after xmas.
As for the US Office... People watch it and enjoy it without having seen the UK version? Blasphemy! Its on BBC America all the time!
I enjoy seeing all the HBO regulars turning up in different shows. I actually only started watching Oz a couple of weeks ago, and found members of the Sopranos and the Wire in the first season already...

That made me realize that there's been no mention of Curb Your Enthusiasm - due to the next season not starting until, possibly, February. This one gets my vote for funniest show ever.
Currently savoring season 5 on DVD. No HBO, so thank you God for series season releases on DVD (just got to relive "The Tick" as well, amazing!)

We powered through season 1 and 2 in about a week or so after hearing it was a good show from some friends. We were not disappointed. Its a great show.
I was however a little disappointed by the Season 3 opener though. It didn't have nearly as much excitement or tension as I would have expected from a season opener.

Like Nether, I also watch far too much TV. It's a habit that started in college, where I would tape everything and watch it during late night drafting sessions.
Here's what I watch right now:
Sunday:
-SIMPSONS (it waxes and wanes, but is still a hoot)
-FAMILY GUY (so glad they brought this back on the air)
-THE AMAZING RACE (best game show on tv...I call it a game show instead of a reality show because there's so little focus on the personal baggage of the contestants....it's all about the game and is like a travelogue on speed)
Monday:
-STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP (the premiere was one of the best written tv episodes I've seen in years....hopefully they can keep it up....whip smart and great quality)
-PRISON BREAK (LOVE this show, because of the very reasons Ninth doesn't....the hyper-stylized unreality is very entertaining I think, plus I have a huge TV-star-crush on the actress that plays Sarah Tankrede, the former prison doctor)
Tuesday:
-HOUSE (wacky medical cases are always cool....my buddy won't watch this because he says it reminds him too much of med school homework. My second TV-star-crush is on the actress that plays one of House's students..I forget the character's name)
-SMITH (just watched the first episode....will stick around for the second before I make up my mind)
Wednesday:
-LOST (so long as they stick to the plan of ending this before the five-year mark, this show could achieve true TV greatness I think)
-BONES (bizarre in the extreme....the show is almost a spoof of CSI type shows....wacky hijinks abound. You want a random ZZ Top cameo? You've got it! You want bizarro sci-fi hologram machines? You got it! The show is weird weird weird, yet somehow still a procedural. Worth checking out from time to time at least.)
Thursday:
-SURVIVOR (one of the only reality shows I enjoy....fun locations, wacky competitons, and the best groups of contestants of any reality show out there)
-THE OFFICE (I like the American one better than the British one, although both are excellent....so sue me...American one has done more episodes than the Brits did, and took the storylines new places....plus I like the American supporting cast better, even though Steve Carrell is not quite as good as Ricky Gervais)
-MY NAME IS EARL (redneck trash, but surprisingly smart and fun redneck trash)
-CSI (I get a kick out of the wacky crimes on this show, and enjoy it sometimes....it's not a VCR show for me though...I feel the same way about all the CSIs...original is the best, then Miami, and NY isn't that good, but I'll watch it if I have nothing else to do and just feel like kicking back, or if I'm over at my family's house visiting (which I do a lot because I'm single and they live fairly close by)....the parents are big fans of all the CSI shows.)
Friday:
-BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (it's often a toss-up for me which I like better....this, 24, or Prison Break. All three are must-watch. Great sci-fi show that I hope does well for years to come....looking forward to the Caprica spin-off.)
Monday through Thursday, if I'm at home between 11 and Midnight or 1 and 2am, I'll watch the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. A great hour of tv there. Sometimes I watch Conan O Brian, although I usually tune out after his opening sketches and don't watch whatever guest he has on. I watch SNL sometimes, if they have a good host, but probably won't watch this season much unless Tina Fey comes back on. Amy Poehler rocks, but she can't hold down Weekend Update on her own. I'm such a Tina Fey fan that even though 30 Rock looks like it will suck, I'll watch the first episode or two just to see what it's all about. I also watch Price is Right while I eat lunch, if I'm at home. Ditto for any cooking show with Rachel Ray or Giatta DeLaurentis or that involved Iron Chef battles. Attack of the Show and X-Play are my final TV pleasures I think, but I rarely get to catch them as G4 doesn't run them when I'm able to watch anymore, and they're certainly not worth taping.
Other shows I watch that aren't on right now:
-24 (looking forward to Jack busting out of Chinese prison)
-AMERICAN IDOL (yeah, I know, it's ridiculous, but I love watching the audition episodes at least, just to see the really bad folks that think they have a shot....everyone says Simon is cruel but he's really not compared to most auditions I've worked)
-ROCKSTAR (far better than American Idol, I actually watch every episode of this and love it. more talented contestants, better music, and more leeway for the singers to do whatever they want with arrangements and performances....including original songs...the worst part about the show is Brooke Burke...she's hot, but a horrible MC for this show. I would have gone with someone with more personality)
-FUTURAMA (it's coming back! until then I need to settle for re-runs on Cartoon Network)
-DOG BITES MAN (a perfect lead-in to the Daily Show...hopefully it's coming back on the air)
-LIFE ON MARS (bizarre BBC cop show about a man transported back to the early 70s....or is he? a great sense of humor and some fun 70's style car chases...too bad they follow the British model of only making a speck of episodes each year...lord knows when it's coming back)
-EXTRAS (Ricky Gervais's show about hollywood extra work....funny and surreal, but like Life on Mars they only amke about three episodes at at time it seems)
-ROME (first season was fantastic....hopefully a budget increase for year two will allow us to actually see some of the cool battles and grand events that were just hinted at the first time around)
-BLADE (first episode sucked, but the second and third eps picked up and it became pretty cool...I'm eager to see what the second season brings)
-CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM (I rarely watch this, but when I do I love it....I just never bother to tape it for some reason)
-ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT (the best live-action comedy since Seinfeld, and possibly better than Seinfeld....sadly it can only be watched in re-runs on G4 because Fox executives blow goats)
-SOUTH PARK (sometimes they're just vulgar for the sake of vulgarity, which turns me off, but this show is smarter than most people give it credit for)
-MEDIUM (I think this has been cancelled, but I'm not sure....it's a cool show that doesn't get it's due.)
-THE APPRENTICE (I watch this with my dad sometimes, mostly to see the really foolish mistakes some people make....honestly, I have no business experience but I could manage a company better than most of these chumps.)
So yeah....I watch a lot of TV. But my schedule kind of allows for it. I tape tons of things and then really stretch out my viewing of them. Sometimes I can be six or seven weeks behind on a particular show.

You pretty much re-iterated the point that I was trying to make. BTW, the best cop shows most often have retired cops on staff as consultants. The best of the best go on to become excutive producers (re: Bill Clark, NYPD Blue, who BTW supplied the vast majority of material for that show).
So I guess that cops making shows that are closer to the real deal are pretty awful. You have only to look at NYPD Blue's 11 Seasons and... How many Emmy's was that again? ;)

How many Emmy's was that again? ;)
ninthdoc just pwned me!
WTF?
You're agreeing with me and claim to have pwned me by agreeing? I don't get it.
My point was that if cops just made shows about being cops, they wouldn't be cops anymore....see? They'd be ex-cops that were now TV producers/writers. That's all.
By the way, putting up fake quotes for someone, even in jest as this clearly was, is completely not cool.

You're not serious, even you identified it as being in jest. :wtf:
If you're going to take offense to something so silly as that, I'm going to follow you around and do it every single time you make a double-post to a thread.
Gimme a break!

I'm not offended by it, but I just don't like seeing it done, even as a joke. It's not a big deal though.
I think ninthdoc has found like the one thing on these forums that can actually bug me. :-)

The great part about working in entertainment is that we know our own industry, so we tend to fictionalize it pretty accurately. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip is awesome.
I agree JCB231 about Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, my wife and I just watched it after Tivo'ing it. Really, really good. Fast paced, lots of little side stories introduced to be developed later and incredible humor with perfect delivery.
I didn't know what to expect, but my wife and I liked West Wing, so we checked it out and have now season passed it. Love it, love it![/i]

About Studio 60, I am looking forward to watching it this season. The first episode was really good and I am hoping it keeps me interested. I have always liked Matthew Perry's work.

It's been so long since I recorded anything on a VCR, can you season pass shows on those things?

True Dat :(
All I can say is thank God for Tivo. We can season pass Justice League and Dora The Explorer for the kids and have them handy anytime, as well as record our shows. Time management is key. We can watch a Tivo'd hour long show in 45 min. Thus we can squeeze in four shows for the same time as if watching three shows as they air.

There was a quote from a new show this season that I heard on a radio comercial. It sounded like the voice of Ray's brother on Everyone Loves Raymond.
It went something like this: "Marriage is just the time spent between fun and dying" or something to that effect.

I saw the first season of the British Office. Never got around to watching the second.
Did you like the original "Office"? If so, you need to watch all of it and especially the Christmas Special for the whole wrap-up and conclusion.
One of the best shows ever.

Sorry, my apologies. I've been away so long, and there's so much reading to catch up on ... I get lazy sometimes.
'Tis good to be back. My parole officer says I'm allowed to play HS again, good, huh?
