Syv,
I actually play quite a few instruments being I'm an instrumental music teacher in the public schools. I'm fluent on all the wind and percussion instruments - I play percussion the best since that's what I studied since 4th grade. How long have you played trumpet?

All kinds of percussion instruments. I'll need an audition tape. I played guitar/bass in several touring/bar bands for several years. Been out of it since my family came along. Working on a "Rock Opera" currently. Yes. I am serious.

Drums. Started on concert drums in 5th grade, but I'm exclusively on my drum kit now. The 'lectronic set is cool cuz of all the different instruments, but there are still some things you can only play on a real set.

I can play Moonlight Sonata on Piano, Sweet Dreams on Guitar, Wipeout on Drums, and I'm getting ready to try out Banjo. I played keyboards and some drums in a band when I was a teenager. We called ourselves "Fallen Angels" and we we're the ****, or at least we played like it.
I played Trumpet for band during my senior year and attempted to learn violin, but I didn't want to fiddle with it too much, :)
As I said the next attempt will be the Banjo cause I wanna be like my heroes and I've already learned welding (well Tac)

Once saw a parade with a marching band. The band had radios on their shoulders all playing the same stuff. Classic moment.
I play a bit of guitar. Nothing special due to inconsistant practice. We have a piano, but that's played by the wife and daughter.

Actually, I just started this year in 6th grade band. I am pretty good at it for a beginner if I do say so myself.
I had to write a peice of music that was 4 measures long, so I thought that was too short. I wrote it with 128th notes all the way through and made it really slow. It was still four measures. And then the next day the teacher says it has to go along with a different piece and can be more than 4 measures. UGH!

Heh, I find this topic kind of Ironic, considering that about 3 hours ago I just finished playing at my last highschool concert. As for instruments, I've played Double Bass since third grade(about 9 years) and Bassoon since 5th(about 7) I must sayit was pretty fun having a solo for the bassoon be included for my highschool concert finale O-o. I also took up electric bass for a bit, but found that I hate the threts or whatever you call em. >.>.

NWO, I saw the triangle and cowbell and it made me think of a couple SNL sketches. The Martin Short one playing Ed Grimly, and the Will Ferrell one as the cowbell player for Blue Oyster Cult.

Frets. And they have fretless basses in no short supply. Just gotta know where to find 'em.
I play guitar primarily... my 3 babies are my Epiphone Les Paul Standard, my Fender American Deluxe Strat, and my Fender something or other acoustic. I've played for about 9 years now... going on 10 on my 18th birthday in December. I don't know a lot of theory or anything, but my playing experience and familiarity with the notes and the touch of the fretboard make up for it in most cases.
I also play drums, just kits, but have never taken lessons so I'm pretty much freelance. I can hold beats very well and have a few rock/hardcore beats up my sleeve (including a wicked fast double bass speed [compare to As I Lay Dying - 94 Hours), but as far as complicated or advanced techniques go I'm pretty much on empty. I do have enough skill to play in the church band though, and have a lot of fun doing it.

Started on drums at age 5. Played percussion all through school, toured Europe in 1982 with US Collegiate Wind Bands. Played a fair amount in church and project studio work (nothing major - just demos and jingles)
Started guitar at age 12. Played in several summer stock orchestra pits (Jesus Christ Superstar, Bye Bye Birdie, Grease, etc) and played lead guitar in several local Top Forty bands (how I worked my way through college). Probably my main instrument.
Started bass guitar in eighth grade. Also played a lot of orchestra pit and studio and church.
Oddly enough the instrument I probably play more than anything else now a days is keyboards! I lead worship mostly from keys.

Stick with it Syv - I teach 5-8th graders and once they get to 7th grade band they take off with their playing and enjoy it all more. Looks like from reading the replies to your post there are a lot of drummers here. That's interesting to me (being a drummer myself).

I played an old-style sling drum (made by the Wicked Tinkers guy (http://www.wickedtinkers.com/)) in the Scottish Guild and accompanied bagpipes on quite a few occasions.
They are hard to accompany, since much of the pipe playing isn;t to an exact beat - it sways all over the place, time-wise. But for marches, they sound great together.

And everyone just thought this thread was dead...
I've been playing saxophone for 20 years now. I like my Bari the best, but I've been forced to play my Alto quite a bit over the past few years. Up until I made the plunge and moved to VA, I've been teaching private lessons for elem-high school each year for the past 13 years. I did that as my sole job for the first 5 years after I had graduated - had 120 students a week at the end before I went into the dark side of "real jobs" (worst mistake I ever made). I've always kept a dozen or two a week since then just because I love it so much. I've been teaching my son for the past few years. He's always been small for his age, so even the curved soprano I got him still seems to swallow him up two years later (he's nine now).
Although I've been considering it for QUITE some time now, I am officially on the brink of getting one of these:
http://www.eppelsheim.com/tubax_bb.php?lang=en
(I also play flute and clarinet due to the college requirement I had to double on other instruments to get my music degree - I've kept up with them ever since, but there are definitely secondary instruments based on my minimal abilities on them).

If you couldn't tell by my name I play drums. I'm a great marching snare player although I'd rather play cymbals. I turned my Highschool drumline into a miniature Santa Clara Vanguard with all the visuals I came up with. Then the captain made me lead snare and while that was cool I LOVED cymbals and all the cool things you can do alot better than snare. I play alot of set. I play in my church and have won the past two local battle of the bands. I like it cuz when I was 10 my band director told me I'd never amoun tot anything as far as drumming goes and now everyone older than me who's heard me play say that I have more raw talent than anyone they've ever met. I'm not amazing yet, but one day I hope to make it somewhere. Moral of the story is "Don't listen to your marching band captain or your band director because they both suck and have no idea what's going on!" I'm also getting ready to take bagpipe lessons!

I played trumpet in Jr. high as well as bass, susaphone, and baratone.
A week ago my sons and I started taking music lessons together. One son is learning guitar (10 years old), the other two (9 and 6) are learning fiddle with me. At this point, I can play "Mary had a little lamb", "Twinkle twinkle little star", and "Soldier's Joy". I play them badly but I can play them.

Various types of guitars and bass guitars, ukulele, lap steel, a little banjo, accordion, trumpet, drums, musical saw, didgeridoo, jaw harp, and I sing. I also played the gong in a gamelan ensemble in college, and I try to do tuvan throat singing but I'm not that great at it. I can also mess around with synths a bit as I know a fair share of audio theory but my piano skills are so-so.
Lately I've been heavily into p sych rock and garage rock and have been running an acoustic guitar through a fuzz pedal as my primary instrument. I also want to incorporate an influence from barrel organs, probably using musical saw, accordion, and trombone/baritone/euphonium.

One side effect of playing didgeridoo is that you know circular breathing, and thus can do such wonderous things as continuously blowing bubbles through a straw for an infinite amount of time. This, of course, being a skill that earns you many great rewards of various & diverse sorts throughout the course of your life.

I don't feel like looking so:
Started on drums and percussion age 6
Started guitar and bass guitar around age 12
Played trumpet for a bit but never got any good.
I can play violin a bit, but definitely very well
I've developed decent keyboard skills by neccessity over the years
I sing
And, I am one of a handful of people who have played a Harpejji (http://www.marcodi.com/home.html), of which there are only nine in the world.
I grew up playing music. My dad played in a band and I played my first paying job when I was in fifth grade. I made $26 (this was 1975) and I thought I was rich. Played school bands, garage bands, then club bands, wedding bands, orchestra pit, project studio work, and lots of church music (both traditional and modern). My job in college and grad school was playing top-40.
I think my sig still has a link to some songs I've recorded a while back. That's me doing everything, though not all at once.

So Samson is a good brand? Cool! I bought it for recording vocals. Yeah, it's ideal for podcast but Iv'e got nothing to podcast. I wanted to buy a better model (24bit model) but C01U is very cheap for a condenser mic. What's available here are an analog condenser mic--costing P16,000 to P22,000 (that's about $350-500) and you need to get a mixer too hook it to your pc--and a C01U USB mic--that's merely P3,800 + P1700 for the spidershock stand ($80 + $36). The latter is the better choice for me.
"Tops and cheap" is correct.

I sing and play piano, guitar (electric, acoustic, bass and classical), french horn, bassoon, drums and the bugle. The latter isn't very useful outside reenacting circles, but it's a great way to wake my kids up when they won't roll out of the rack! We needed a praise band at our church, and didn't have anyone immediately ready, so I taught the entire band how to play.

Yeah Samson is a entry level product that gets the job done well. The Samson CO2's are the condenser over heads I was referring to that came with the drum kit. Matter of fact, a couple of CO2's, whatever the Samson base drum mic is and a couple of Sure SM57's are all I think anyone would need for a drum kit. If you start to want higher quality at only a little bit more money, check out R0de. I stand by the quality of R0de mics over just about anything. They are a step up in money though but the cheapest of the awesome mics in my opinion.
Peace.

I play lots of instruments! Lets see if I can list them all... Piano, trumpet, guitar, drum set, bass, recorder, djimbe, didgeridoo, violin (sort of) , and the ocarina on the legend of zelda games! But my passion is writing music. I just got accepted as a music composition student at the University of Northern Colorado and I'm so excited! If anyone needs music for something, I'm your man!
I'd like to hear some of your stuff! I do a little writing myself (Still a novice though), and am always glad to see other people doing it also!
Ok so here are some links to some of my music:

I've been playing drums for a year or two now (and I'm not to bad at it, if I do say so myself). My kit's cymbals suck though (I'm getting a new ride and a new crash as soon as I can afford them). The songs I can play and have played are;
"Beast and the Harlot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysY_hQnQUa4)"- Avenged Sevenfold
"Blood and Thunder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHNG0W6JIJ0)"- Mastodon (except for that weird guitar+drum solo)
"BYOB (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcXSi0OJZi4)"- System of a Down
"Chop Suey! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdRd3k4CIAg)"- System of a Down
"Give It All (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLyL0RUM-2A)"- Rise Against
"Last Resort"- Papa Roach (wasn't able to find a fully censored version)
"Prayer of the Refugee (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8iJtSNETMU)"- Rise Against
"Sweet Child O' Mine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-AYAv0IoWI)"- Guns N' Roses (had to learn it for something the school was doing)
"Waking the Demon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKSBlTzSTyc)"- Bullet for My Valentine (I prefer the screaming version, but that version wasn't censored)
"You're Gonna Go Far Kid"- The Offspring (I know, nothing special; the verses are so easy my 10-year-old brother with no musical talent whatsoever can play them. I also was unable to find a censored version)
Also, yes, I know "Beast and the Harlot" and "Waking the Demon" have double bass. I do not, but I can hit the bass pedal fast enough to make it sound decent (although nothing beats a good machinegun double bass). I also have a friend who knows some guitar, so we just need to find a bassist and vocalist.

Little update:
After getting my guitar strung, I've been working at it daily. I can now play the main melody to "Seven Nation Army" (the White Stripes), "Solute your Solution" (the Raconteurs) and the intro to "Sweet Child O' Mine" (Guns N Roses).
Obviously I can't do the solos to any of these songs because both Jack White and Slash are AMAZING guitarists. They just have an easy riff here and there that I learned. Really, there isn't much more to "Seven Nation Army" that that riff, so I pretty much know it. "Solute your Solution" has some amazingly difficult synth parts, and the solo is unrepeatable. Jack White just free stlyes for his solos, so I doubt even he could play it again.
Anyway, that's what I've been doing. I also learned how to play "The Sound of Settling" (Death Cab for Cutie) but it turns out I was using the wrong tab, and It's not the same.

I play guitar and piano. (And by Piano, I mean actually PIANO and keyboards) I've been playing piano for about 7 years, and guitar for 2. (Though I strongly favor guitar)
I own an electric piano and a Casio WK - 8000 keyboard. In the way of guitars, I own a Hagstrom acoustic, Gibson Maestro Les Paul, and Spectrum SG standard.
songs I've been playing:
Piano: Let it be, Hey Jude - The Beatles
Viva La Vida - Coldplay
Guitar: Time of Your life, Know Your enemy - Green Day
In and out of love, You give love a bad name - Bon Jovi
Anyone think we should start a "What song are you playing" thread?

Sorry for reviving this thread, but I really wanted to discuss some of what I'm currently playing.
I've played the piano for 4 and a half years now.
The most recent songs I've learned how to play are Pirates of the Caribbean: He's a Pirate, Canon in D, Don't Stop Believing, the Pink Panther, and Linus and Lucy (Charlie Brown). I've also been playing a lot of random music that I've learned from the internet or by using my ear and musical theory. For example, I've learned some Michael Jackson songs, the Sweet Child O'Mine guitar intro, and a lot of other stuff.
I've also been playing the cello for 2 and a half years. In orchestra class, we've learned how to play Pirates of the Caribbean, and some more music.
Recently, I've been composing some music of mine as well using a software called Finale Notepad (http://www.finalemusic.com/notepad/).
Overall, I really enjoy music, and I'm curious who else here plays music.
Also, arp12, I think you and I are the only cellists on this site.

Composing is great! It starts out kinda slow, but with practice is becomes a lot easier!
Notepad used to be free, and now they're charging for it, which I don't like... But I bought Allegro in 2007, and it's pretty great. Cost about $70, though!

So many Gibson fans...Tis a pity!;) I play a Yamaha right now, although I am looking at a Jackson DK2M, or an American Stratocaster. As far as songs pretty much any ramones song.
Don't tread on me, from whom the bells toll, seek and destroy, sanitarium. However I cannot do the solos yet.
As far as other music, Misery business-Paramore, helicopter-Bloc Party, obstacle one-interpol, and some others I can't comprehend.

I'm pretty smart when it comes to musical theory (I understand chord progressions, key signatures, flat sevenths, etc.) Maybe I'll PM you a copy of me piece once it's done. I'm well aware of your music, LordPyre. Would you mind giving me a PDF file of some of your music. I've always loved looking at music, and seeing how the notes all fit together.

I play guitar and used to sing/guitar in a little punk rock band. I took lessons for classical guitar as well. The last time I studied with a teacher was to try to learn the "Travis style" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpI-7OphrWI) picking. Very difficult for me, but it's one of the more rewarding styles of guitar playing.
I currently play a bunch of weird instruments in my comedy act, including: using a library card to play my corduroy pants, air guitar on a real guitar, rubbing the mic against the guitar bag, etc.

Piano is a great instrument. You can play just about anything on piano. You can play classical, jazz, pop - heck, I've even been know to play a guitar solo on the piano.
Don't get me wrong - I love all the instruments, but when someone says "just piano" I have to pop in say something.

That site will teach you plenty of chords to play. They only leave out power chords, which are basically the foundation that rock guitar is built upon. You can put a power chord anywhere on the neck, and it still sounds good.
A power chord shape is this: Index finger:Any fret on the E or A strings Ring finger: One string up, two frets up. Pinky finger: two strings up, two frets up. It's a really simple chord that is used in A LOT of songs.
Also, you might want to check out www.911tabs.com (http://www.911tabs.com) because it offers tablitures to basically any song you can think of. I pretty much learned how to play just from learning song from that site, and then practicing them until they were easy.

Okay, just a quick question, answers are greatly appreciated.
Is it bad to strum the bass guitar with your thumb? I heard it was so I started learning the other way, with your wrist above and your fingers coming down perpendicular to the strings.

A lot of people use picks, so I can't see how bad it would be.

There isn't really a 'wrong' way to do it. I pluck with my fingers. Well, I don't really pluck, I kind of thwack. I like the sound of the strings smacking against the fretboard. I don't do that all the time though. Sometimes I thwack closer to the bridge so there is less smacking against the fretboard. Most of the time I thwack right above the pick-ups. Sometimes I thwack right above the end of the fretboard to get a sound similar to Geezer Butler.
If you are going to slap-and-pop, striking the lower strings with the side of your thumb and then pulling the higher strings with your first and second finger is the standard.
