Happy Independence day to everyone around the world! If the 4th Mass. hadn't kicked the 10th Foot out of our country, what little freedoms many of you enjoy today would not be possible, so I figure it's kind of a world Independence day (how Americentric of me, eh). What better way to celebrate the 4th of July than with a custom contest?

Hopefully people aren't too burned out from the "unofficial" promo contest to participate in this one. In my custom-making, I've acquired several duplicates of figures, so I figured I'd have a contest and let you win some of my customs!

Rules:
1. One entry per person
2. Can be any custom you want that hasn't been in a contest before.
3. Custom must include a bio (see Judging, below).

Judging:
Judging will be in two phases: Bio and Card.

Bio: I (being a writer) will judge each bio and give it a score from 1-10. I will post each person's bio and score so if you don't want your score to be seen by others, don't enter the contest. I will judge each bio on grammar, word usage and how well your bio clarifies the figure's abilities (if they need to be) and how well the bio ties your figure(s) into the existing HS universe.

Card: I will post a poll and the general public will vote on which card they like the best. Your score in this phase will be based on the percentage of votes that you get multiplies by 2. So if you get 100% of the votes, you get 20 points (10x2) for this phase, 80%, 16 points, etc. with fractions rounded to the nearest whole number.

These two scores will be combined for the final score and determine the winners. The top five will receive prizes of their choice.

Note: This method of scoring will place slightly more emphasis on the bio, so make sure they're good!

Deadline:
You can post ideas and discuss them here for two weeks. PM me your final bio and card by Friday, July 17th! I plan to make the poll thread by July 20th. The poll will be open for 10 days and then the contest will end. Winners will be announced and scores posted by July 31st! Any questions? Then get customizing!

Couple things:

Should entries be posted or PMed?

Also, is there any kind of word goal to shoot for? It seems like it would be a good idea. How will you judge between a well written 100 words and a well written page?

When you say bio, do you mean more the the heroscape bios, which are more like a short descriptive story, or do you mean an actual biography, the characters history and stuff?

Are you sure you haven't slanted the contest to much towards the bio? Each bio has a potential for 10 points, while all the customs have 10 points between them. With only 15 or so entries, I don't see anyone getting more than 2-3 points tops on the poll.

Quoting myself. Insanity beckons...
When I say bio I mean Heroscape bio. The same bios you see in the Books of Heroscape. A Blurb or paragraph will suffice. Please don't write me a book, you'll be marked down for it.
I have slanted it a bit towards the bio. That was on purpose. 'Course I see your point. Perhaps I could double your card scores to make up for it?

It hasn't been updated in a while, but there is a list of most of the official powers, and their wordings. Flying is under movement abilities. Cut, paste, and you have all the rules. Makes it easy to get all the common powers.

They can be. But, no, I don't automatically consider them a mistake.

How about Mineatrons for the name. I know it isn't the best name,but at least you have a name for them.

Also,you don't have a point value. 130 sounds right,should be higher though. Because thats 7 defence if they are mines and deal 1 wound if they die. How about 1 additional defence and if you make that change,how about 110-120 points.

^If you're naming these guys after the mine, then it's Claymore (with a 'y'). Also, you should specify whether all Claymores have to change into mines at the same time or whether they can choose to do so individually, and mark them in some way so people know that they're mines (put a wound counter on their base, for example).

It was decision day at the Aubrien Archer camp in Feylund's capital. Every student was nervous, but the Lach-nar triplets felt that they had nothing to worry about. For they had proven themselves to be quite accomplished archers and very accurate shots. The voice of the Headmaster sounded across all of the grounds while his booming voice said. "What a beautiful day in Feylund. Today, some of you will move on to join the elite..... THE AUBRIEN ARCHERS!". An applause rose from the crowd as the headmaster continued, "Sadly, not all of you here today can become one of them. We will only be accepting a couple of you." A silence in the crowd allowed the headmaster to continue "And so, here are the ones to be admitted:". He paused, the Lach-nar triplets expected to hear all of their names called ,for they had been praised for their excellent marksmanship in their village. The names went, and none of the Lach-nar triplets were called.

Overcome with anger, they betrayed the Aubrien Archers and went to seek their revenge. One day, while the triplets were laying down to rest in the middle of a remote forest, a white light came to them. When the light ceased, they saw the General Utgar, staring back at them.

He was the epitome of evil and swore that he would help the Lach-nar triplets get their revenge upon the elves of Feylund. While on Valhalla, the Lach-nar triplets soon became the Lach-nar Elves and perfected their marksmanship past even the standards of the Aubrien Archers. Their name is now the most feared among the elves of Ullar.

Looks nice! One question: Is Rain of Arrows identical to the Roman Archers' Arrow Volley? If so, I'd probably just call it arrow volley and use the text from that power on the card. But that's just me...

If he's a Wolf hero, why not a darklord? It definitely wouldn't break the WoB to be able to bond with him. Maybe make Hunter's Howl "After revealing an order marker on Kiroset..." and make him a Darklord.

If he's a Wolf hero, why not a darklord? It definitely wouldn't break the WoB to be able to bond with him. Maybe make Hunter's Howl "After revealing an order marker on Kiroset..." and make him a Darklord.

Well, Darklords appear to be more Werewolfy by nature, and I thought a normal Wolf Hero would be cool. So I made him a Hunter, as it fits him more, and having the Wolves bonding with him gave them too much mobility when I tested it. I considered it though.

Kiroset charged through the line of Elven Warriors. Letting out a bloodthirsty howl, he tears into the foe, opening up a long gash in his side. Suddenly, wolves begin to pour from the forest surrounding the Elven Caravan, as they responded to Kiroset's Howl. As they charged through, Kiroset became more dangerous, working in unison with his fellow Hunters. Then, suddenly, the carnage ended, and Kiroset approached the central cart, the one that was supposed to hold the Dire Stone. Instantly, a horn sounded, and Elven Warrior charged from the surrounding Forest, Chardris with them. Chardris sent a Fireball at Kiroset, but he was gone, vanished from Feylund.

Bio:
Woled Peltbeard family was killed by a wolf war party on a clear full moon night when he was just 5 years old. He wandered Feylund alone for 8 years and had to learn how to hunt and survive without any support,otherwise he would die. He had never liked to be with others until he met Migol Ironwill of Burning Forge. Migol taught him a lot about hunting and surviving by hiself. Migol even showed him how to make weapons and armor so Woled could hunt even better and survive battles.

One night Woled was sleeping in a rock building he had built with Migol and a couple of others. Migol and the other dwarves were guarding a huge cave, in it lived huge Mountain Trolls that loved war and revenge,but had been held in the cave for thousands of years by the Dwarves of Burning Forge. The trolls attacked taking any dwarf in their way out. Migol and his dwarves couldn't hold them and had to fight. Woled was disturbed in his sleep by battle cries and clinging of armor. Woled got up and grabbed his special axe that Migol had given him. He ran to the exit of the building. He couldn't belive his eyes. Migol was no were in sight along with his dwarf followers. Woled ran out into the open not knowing what was going on. Then he closed his eyes and screamed giving his position away to the near by wolves that were tracking elves. He reopened them and he faced wolves searchign for elves that had a mission to do. Before he could react he was surrounded by 21 Wolves of Badru and 2 huge wolves that seamed to be the leaders which were known as darklords. He didn't know what to do. The wolves attacked,but before the wolves made contact a bright yellow light surrounded him and he vanished.

"Welcome Woled Peltbeard." A female annouced. He looked up at a beautiful,dark skinned,woman with black hair and white wings that stood in a crowd of other men with wings. "Am I dead?" Woled asked as he looked at all the yellow suited people. "Not likely Woled. You are on Valhalla. A world that has been torn in two by the evil Valkyrie general Utgar and his minions. We need your help,because this war that can spread to every world that is known. There is many other things oh Valhalla from your home world. Wolves being one of them. Your friend Migol Ironwill is in the castle,exploring. Now here is my question. Will you follow me,Aquilla,Valkyrie of the Jungle and join to stop Utgar?" Aquilla asked. "Yes I do. I still have unfinished business with wolves and I will make them pay for what they did to me and my familiy." Woled looked down at his axe. Memories of his family shot through him in waves of pain. Bio
Jack was the only son of a lumberjack. His family lived in a dense old forest, isolated from the rest of the world for the most part of the year. The only contact they had with others was when Jack and his Father went sown the river to sell the logs.

One winter night the log where they lived was attacked by a gang of bandits, searching for food and shelter from the snow. Jack hid in the cavity between the floor and the ground, listening in horror to the tortured screams above. Three days after the bandits left, and Jack was truly alone.

So Jack grew alone, dreaming of revenge, but the solitude, his blinding rage and the harshness of the environment drove him to insanity, transforming him in a blood thirsty man who killed every moving thing he saw.

On the day that Jack was about to be killed by an enraged she-bear, he was whisked away to Valhalla. Utgar had great hopes for Jack and invited him to fight under his banner. Buy Jack fought his way out of Utgar's domain, and now he is alone again. Jack now still fights for himself, not discerning friends from foes on his mad rampage....

If I'm understanding your question correctly, Grot is from Feylund and the Battle Ball customs are from Alpha Prime (fairly obvious if you look them up on my custom thread). If I'm not understanding you correctly, please clarify your question.

Sure! Your intent was clear. But, being HS a US exclusive game (well, from Wave 3 to now, at least) and being the majority of 'scapers americans, i have nothing against a "english-speaking" only contest: to me is fine.

So, yes, I think it would be fair to have someone translate your bio into English (as long as they're not an English professor or a published novelist(as if I could verify that)). I figure it's fair as a non-English speaker will be somewhat at the mercy of their translator...
Just to be really clear: i'm asking about a "revision" of what i'm writing in english, not about a translation from italian. Dunno if this change something.
Also, i agree with what shadow_111 said, even if a "competition" about english grammar between me and a native english speaker it is not fair also (IMO).

So, given these two last point, i'm waiting for a confirmation about what you said, or for a "no-go". Think at it without worries: i don't want to "ruin the game" with my very personal "problem". Many centuries before the elves of Feylund had found refuge among the Wayland trees at the base of the mountain Llomvar, the commanding centaur champion, Ashra, crafted a powerful magic artifact, the Dire Stone, and lead the remnants of the elven nation to a decisive victory over the forces of the Darklord Aapep.

With the safety of the fledgling elven survivors assured, Ashra parted ways; gifting the Dire Stone and prophesying to return at the time of the elves' greatest need.

In memory of Ashra's heroic endeavors, the city was named after him and an epigraph was carved into the base of the largest of the Waylan trees in the center of the elven city. The inscription foretells of a time when the greatest of Feylund's heroes would return to repel the tides of darkness.

Long have the elves weathered their enemies' barbs, waiting for the triumphant return of their majestic city's namesake but now with the strange disappearance of The Nine, many have began to wonder if the promise of Ashra's return has been taken from them as well...

Then when Zelrig became king of the land he banished Jatez to the water because of his blue scales and because he didn’t want a challenger to his throne. What Zelrig did not realize was that Jatez grew stronger and faster when he was in the water. Now 50 years later Jatez has come seeking revenge. He now flies to his brother’s capital city seeking to wage war... a war that may never end.

I was planning on entering another custom, but then I realized I have no idea what his backstory is, so the bio would be no good. I also didn't have time to finish my Super custom. Therefore, I am submitting one of my favorite (and simplest) customs, Morgan CIPHER!

He started the TNT review process, but it died before it finished. I've never entered him in a contest before, so if Ashra works, this guy should be fine.

In the year 2209, the world was a jumble of warring factions. When an agent named Morgan, one of the top mechanics and programmers in his army, had his arms mangled in a firefight, he was brought back to his base in critical condition. Scientists, experimenting with a new technology and racing against the clock to save his life, grafted metal arms onto his shoulders, adding large shoulder plates to protect his head and modifying his DNA to strengthen him, enabling him to carry the increased weight. Thus, Earth's first Cyborg was born.

Morgan CIPHER, (Cybernetic Individual Programmed for Hazardous Exploration and Repair) spends hours tinkering with his own metal arms, constantly updating them. His years building things is paying off now, enabling him to use scrap metal to repair himself and other metal beings, such as robots and other cyborgs, and now, in Valhalla, Soulborgs.

Since Zelrig is Einar, I don't see a reason for them to be enemies. Mimring maybe, but not Zelrig.

For better or for worse, here's mine: Calamity Sue!
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Everybody seems to be posting their work here as well as PM-ing it to B.I.V. So I'll do the same.

Calamity was designed to make the cowboys more playable. She does not pack a lot of punch and as such may not pose a big threat to the enemy. But while she’s happily taking potshots, the lawmen can move into position (height, glyphs).
She only has 1 life and with 2 defense she’s not very sturdy. Yet taking her out can be a perilous task. The lawmen don’t take too kindly to strangers harassing their filly and Calamity herself has a nasty surprise up her sleeve for the first bad guy who gets too close for comfort.

I'm not completely happy about the bio. The basis is OK I think, but it really needs more structural continuity. Unfortunately, with the deadline breathing down my neck, I don't have the time to work out the flaws. So this will have to do. I apologize if it's too long.

The moment the creature burst from the foliage in a flurry of claws and fur I knew I was in trouble, big trouble. And, as usual, I only had myself to blame. I could have listened to the little voice in the back of my head, the little voice that had been telling me all along how very sensible it would have been for me to turn back and do as I had been told to do. I could have done that, I understood the concept of being sensible. It was just that I have never been any good at making it work in practice. In fact I had been so bad at making it work that by the time I reached my teens I had stopped trying altogether. Other girls were good at being sensible. They became school teachers and house wives. I had learned to play cards and handle a gun. Sensible girls drank tea, not moonshine. There had been times when I felt sorry for the sensible girls. I didn’t reckon they had much fun and adventure in their lives. They’d never get to search for gold or hunt bear. Then again, they probably also did not get nicknamed Calamity. They would have managed to stay out of trouble. They would just have followed Einar’s orders.

The Valkyrie’s instructions had been clear enough. Anything out of the ordinary was to be reported immediately. The tracks I had discovered this morning absolutely qualified, no two ways about that. The prints were fresh, canine by the look of them, but larger and deeper than any coyote trail I had seen back home. I was willing to bet my bottom dollar these weren’t coyote. And whatever they were -I was voting for big and dangerous- they weren’t ours. I was ninety-nine percent pretty sure of that. Einar employed no such beings. Not that we didn’t have any weirdoes in our ranks, we did, the big green fellow with the bulging eyeball for instance, or the dragon. But neither of them would leave such marks. And to the best of my knowledge the rest of us were human, even the oriental warriors with the big attitude. When I first met them I had briefly tried to teach them the fine art of five-card-stud but they were lousy poker players and I was always afraid they might run off and go kill themselves when I put down a flush against their pair of jacks. Sure, they could move like the wind and I had seen them cut the wings of a fly in mid air with their long blades, but I felt very strongly that they spent all too much time drinking tea and reciting poetry. And no matter how well they handle a knife, I just don’t dig guys, who can’t play cards and put on an act like sensible girls. Call me prejudiced. Not that I got on any better with the others, I didn’t. Take those big bronzed fighters with muscles like cables. They were less buckled up and much more down to earth than the Samurai. But when I had tried to raise their interest in a few rounds of texas-hold-them-all they had carefully explained to me what a gladiator’s idea of ‘a good game’ was and I had not bothered asking again. Yeah, I’d really been fitting in, not. I was used to being the odd one out and I didn’t lose any sleep over it but it had made me wonder what in blazes name had gotten into the Valkyrie when he picked me.

On the other hand, If I had fitted in I might have been warming my bones at the camp fire this morning and not been out hiking in the hills in which case I would not have stumbled upon those prints. The prints were bad news. I would also not have seen that the tracks were heading for the wellspring, which meant more bad news. The wellsprings were important. I knew the wellsprings were important. Of course I knew. Everybody knew. If it had not been for the wellsprings, none of us would have been here in the first place. We would have been stone dead, all of us. For me it would have ended back at that poker table. Sure, I had been aware that the guy was a bad loser and I already had him figured as a “Smith& Wesson beats four aces” kind of guy. So when he had drawn on me I had been ready for him. The little derringer I had been holding under the table, while notoriously inaccurate at a distance was quite effective at this short range and the son of a ***** had been dead before his gun even left the holster. Which would have been the end of the tale if there hadn’t been two sons of bitches, the second one being the brother of the guy I’d just put down. I had not seen him, on account of the fact that he had been lurking in the back of the saloon. I also had not been sitting with my back towards the wall, a buffalo sized mistake. Not the live and learn kind of mistake, more the kind where you learn but don’t live. That bullet had my name on it and the only reason I wasn’t pushing up daisies was that the one who calls himself Einar had saved my hide.

I really should have been a grateful girl, making a bee line for the camp and report those prints. Instead I had been tracking them. It wasn’t really disobeying orders, I had told myself. It was just wanting to find out more about what we were dealing with first. The little voice in the back of my head had only asked whom I thought I was fooling. Well it wasn’t me, not really. I was hunting big game, that’s what I was doing, and enjoying every minute of it.

And now I had one of the creatures standing I front of me, twenty stone of muscle, claws and teeth. Guess that meant the hunt was officially over. I’d found them and knew what I had been hunting for all day. I had never seen Anubian Wolves before, but I’d heard the stories, and I knew the beast for what it was the moment I saw it. Mystery solved. That was the good news. The bad news was of course that technically it had found me. Call a spade a spade, I had been waylaid and ambushed like a greenhorn. They must have known I’d been on their tail, but how? Suddenly it dawned on me, the wind had shifted and I hadn’t even noticed. Hooray for Calamity Sue, the famous tracker. I could kick myself, but there seemed little point in doing so. If only half of what I’d heard about Anubians was true I was about to have my ass handed to me on a platter anyway. I’d heard how fast these monsters were. I was going over my options and coming up empty handed.

Still, if I was going down I’d be going down fighting. I feigned to the left and went for my gun. The beast launched itself forward and slashed out. That would have been my chest if I’d been standing still. Jumping Jehosapath, how could anything be so fast? As it was the claw cut my arm. It hurt like hell and I felt the half drawn gun slip from my grasp. Bugger! I still had the derringer in my booth, but it wasn’t going to do me any good. I was toast and I knew it. The Anubian knew too. I could see the triumphant glare in its yellow eyes. I prayed the end would be quick but I wasn’t betting on it, I heard Anubians like to play with their food.

When the gun went off, the Anubian was probably as surprised as I was. Or maybe not, it was difficult to tell because part of its head was gone. A decent caliber gun will do that you know. The beast fell down and a man emerged from behind a rock, colt still smoking in his hand. My face must have been an open book because I didn’t even have to ask the question. “When you didn’t report back the big guy sent me and a couple of lads looking. He figured you might be in need of some assistance. While you’ve been following the doggies I‘ve been following you.” He nodded in the direction of the dead wolf. “It ain’t save for a lady to be wandering alone out here.” He was obviously baiting me but I couldn’t help myself “I’m no lady.” I didn’t mean for it to sound like it did. He looked amused. “Yeah, so I heard.” Suddenly he went serious again. “These Anubians, I know them, they hunt in large groups. Our deceased friend over there didn’t travel alone. He has been left behind to take you out, but the rest of the pack moved on. They need to be stopped before they reach the wellspring. I know you’re a bit of a maverick but there’s safety in numbers. It would be best if you join forces with me and the lads on this.” “Who is me and the lads,” I asked, ignoring the maverick bit. “We used to be lawmen, but there doesn’t seem to be much law to be upheld here on Valhalla. There’s plenty of bastards to be hunted down, though. So what do you say?” I considered the offer. “I’m tempted.” I gave him a hard look. “Do you know how to play poker?” His grin went from ear to ear. ”Does a one-legged duck swim in circles?” I knew I was smiling. “Then what the hell are we waiting for, let’s go get ourselves a nice new anubian fur overcoat!”

"Hehe," panted Moltrum, as he smoothly slid his spear into the flesh of a mortally wounded human, gasping on the battlefield, "Enjoy your final moment, scum." The mezzodemon twisted his lethal weapon in the body of the unfortunate soldier. Moltrum then stood, tugged his spear from the body of his late adversary, and smirked at the kingdom of Farnel on the horizon. There had been tension between the countries of Derdiar and Farnel for years, and the mischievous miscreants in his band had decided to bring the two nations into all out war through a raid on the king of Farnel's most trusted men. All had gone as planned. In his moment of satisfaction, a voice was heard advancing over the hill to his left.
"Moltrum," the voice hissed, "there is a being who wishes to speak to you." Over the mound came the serpent Bal, his tongue savoring the scent of carnage as it flicked in and out of his lipless mouth, his sword flung over his back, still bloody from the day's slaughter.
"Do you recognize him?" inquired Moltrum.
"No," replied Bal, watching the hill nervously, "He wears a cloak and will not tell his name."
"I will meet with him," stated Moltrum, as he strutted toward the hill with Bal following. On the other side of the hill, another in his band, an orc by the name of Ran-Cad, was standing at attention, watching a cloaked stranger who stood as still as death and looked back at him with seemingly great interest. "What do you need?" asked Moltrum, as he eyed the suspicious stranger. And what a stranger he was. He was clad in a cloak with a large hood. He was tall; taller than anyone any of the raiders had ever before seen. He had large wings, resembling those of a bat, and his posture was perfect.
"I have seen your skill in combat, brethren," answered the winged stranger, "and I wish for you to come fight for me."
"We'll do no such thing!" shouted Ran-Cad, "We have wars to start, kidnappings to perform, and thrones to seize."
"I'm afraid you have no choice", chuckled the being, "Jandar must fall."
"What?" questioned bal, but he got no answer before he, Moltrum, Ran-Cad, and the stranger disappeared.

You don't automatically have LoS, it is simply not required to attack engaged figures. However, single spacers do have 360° of LoS around their head, so it will be impossible to get Sneak Attack.

Several good reasons for that actually. Like double voters, many people will vote in both polls. If you had all of the good ones in one poll the votes would be split between them. If the other poll contained all the bad ones and one not-so-bad then the not-so-bad one would beat all the good ones and it would be a landslide too. There is no fail-safe way to do this but letting as many of the semi-finalists as possible go on for one final poll is definitely the best. The B.I.V. is doing the right thing here.;)

The oxide flare sprang to life and rose quickly above the trees. That was his signal. The silent figure broke from cover like an uncoiling spring, and began to run. He crossed the hundred yards to the palisade in little more than ten seconds. His pistol rose. The lone sentry did not live to sound the alarm. He was over the wall in a single leap. He landed at a run and kept on going. A flash of steel cut the darkness and a second sentry tasted death. The camp knew of his presence now, but it would not help them. Bio score: 10. Brilliant! I'm truly sorry Ghost didn't make it into the contest. He would have been a great addition. I'm sure he'll win one somewhere along the line, though. :)
