Looooove the battlefield locations! Nice find whoever discovered the map!
Think we'll see a battle in Haukeland someday?
Crumland's shape looks like Mexico.
And the Southeast territories...unexplored? Somebody get the Kyries of Lewis and Clark out there

Does it say Thaelink tundra? And Haukeland is far in the map, as Volcarren and Tundra, new terrain awaiting? And even more. What hide those unnamed lands to the east?

ha. a spelling error on the map :)
yep, it should be Thaelenk, not Thaelink.
btw, Thaelenk is an anagram for Kathleen.

It also lists Nastralund instead of Nostralund. Jeez, you think the illustrator and/or editor could have at least checked the packages for the correct spellings ... Of course, that is how Thormun spelled it also ...

September 7th, 2006, 06:02 PM
That's awesome. More flavor for the fan-fic, at the very least.
"Thaelink" isn't the only misspelling. They use "it's" instead of "its" in the upper text about the castle. sigh...
Can I apply for the job of Hasbro's proofreader?

For large prints, cleaning up this image would be a crazy task. The compression noise throughout the image is pretty awful. And to increase the image size, both in dimension and resolution, would make the image so blurry, that which is close to unreadable now would be COMPLETELY unreadable. One would be better off remaking the map from scratch, rather than to attempt to make these wallpaper sized images printworthy.

actually, the booster pack from wave 3 says "Heroes of Nostralund". but any other time it is referenced on battlefield background text it is spelled Nastralund. the description for Forsaken Waters and Wolf Swamp Road both say it with an "a".

Just think of it as an evolution of the language. For example, in Olde English, "the King" used to be "se cyeuning" or something that sounds like that. Pretty big jump, anyway. I wouldn't criticize them too much. It wasn't until the past 300 years or so that we finally standardized many spellings of English words.

Looks like we'll be seeing some swamp expansions too. A few swamp locations are listed in the top right. Did they mention at Gen Con that there's going to be undead coming out before too long? I thought I saw some pics but I'm too lazy now to find them again.

I thought I saw some pics but I'm too lazy now to find them again. Before too long? There already is an Undead unit: Sudema :P
But yes, there are Zombie/Ghoul'ish figures and Ghosts/Spectres/Wraiths/Whatever figures too.
As for Swamp Terrain... I hope it's just a lot of Terrain Features, rather than terrain pieces... Like... trees, vines, bushes, etc instead of "swamp" tiles :P
Snarky comments and hopes for swamps aside, it's pretty cool that they released the map of Valhalla. Now if we could just get some more background on some of the completely missing characters... like Thora and Mallidon. Not to mention some general background on each race/culture... *sighs*

I've got one print done that is 28"x40". The images and map itself aren't bad at this size. The text is what the real problem is. If I was good at photoshop I would simply sharpen up that text and go with it. Looking at it from across the room at this size is great. I'm going to go ahead with a 56"x80" size and see what that does to the map and illustrations. The text of course will be even worse. Surely there is a way to get rid of the old text manually and place some sharper text in its place. What's your assessment CA?

Oooh, I just posted this in the 'Dream software' thread, but this has me itching to make a map repository program, that allows people to tag their maps to the map of valhalla!
You have a kickin volcano map, Add its pushpin to Volcarren.
you have an awesome pirates cove map? stick it to that island.
You looking for a sweet Ice map? start browsing the pushpins in the tundra.
I'm very interested in getting a cleaned up big version, so people could zoom in and brows the map up close .. very cool

Sharpen does not work, first thing I did. As hextr1p mentioned the compression noise is just too great and sharpen actually worsens it. I have tried unsuccessfully to Smart Blur/Sharpen but it helps only minorly. The best idea is to actually replace the text, now I am off to find the correct font(s).

Okay, here is what I did:
Auto adjust levels: this does WONDERS for the contrast and colors. Generally, you're to stay away from the 'auto' features, but in this case, it turns out.
I then manually adjusted the levels to help bring the black out more, as well as some of the burned or worn tones and textures, while still keeping the legibility of the map intact.
Bumped up the image size to 80" x 64" and the res to 150. I tried to make it 300dpi, but that would have pushed the file size to over a gig!
Smart blur: Radius=15, Threshold=20, Quality=Medium, Mode=Normal. This helps a little bit with the enlarged compression noise. However, the smaller text is still very close to unreadable. With this file, there is nothing you can do about that except replace the text manually, first clearing the area with the clone stamp or healing brush.
This image is smaller, of course, but you can see the visual changes regardless...

Wow. That looks awesome. It looks so much more dynamic than the Hasbro edition.

I still say that we campaign Hasbro:Heroscape for the raw image before they filtered and sized it for the desktop!

The majority of the text is done in a font called Pelican (this is the same font used in Thormun's Journal). Some of the capitalized words are a different font.

What is in that southern area? A secret layer for a new general?
-sigh- It is probably just a bunch of unhabitable jungle.
I noticed two other intersting things about this map:
1. There is no south pole. That means this is just the northern hemisphere. (It might even be just one quarter of vahalla.) There is enough room for several more continents to fit in Valhalla.
2. Not only are boats needed to get to haukeland, they are neede to get to the tundra too! That means Jandar already has boats that can transport troops artic seas. Longboats anyone? Craig already mentioned this as the boats they will most likely make, in the interview with Buddy Lee. I can definatly see these coming in the future. (Maybe with some dregull warriors too. ) :D

However, I do have to put a disclaimer out there. As I mentioned before, I can only do so much to this map to make it print worthy. Especially at the size you're looking for. The image was already highly compressed in its JPEG format, so the details will be really blurry. As I mentioned, I'll clean up the text as best I can. You may be able to get away with resetting the type and photoshopping the old type out. If you'd like I could give you a hand, I think making a higher res file would be a great thing for the site. Besides I was planning on working this out for larger scale anyway to put on my game table, :)
It also looks like she used a Zaph style font for all of the type and if that's true matching fonts wouldn't be that hard at all.

since this map has a mile marker, I was wondering how many hexes across a mile would be. I think you could base it from one of the guns used in the game. i don't know anything about guns so i can't identify any of them to figure out what the range would be.

OMG A MAP A MAP!! FINALLY!
I am disappointed in everyone who knows me personally and didn't tell me about this the moment they found out.
It's gorgeous! :drool::lol:
I was wondering when you'd be commenting, and what you'd be commenting.

Awesome. That way I'll have your address to send you a giant copy of it. :)
Very cool.
But don't be expecting clean lines and pristine detail in other areas of the map.
Just so you're aware...
I look forward to seeing this done :D
Would'nt it be cool if they made separate maps for each region for more detail?

I can tell you this allskulls, the map looks awesome when you hang it up at half size (28x40).
And there are software programs out there that will let you get detailed maps of regions of a larger map - in fact I work with one every day for a living. The problem lies in the fact that there is no "real" detail to get. I suppose I could make a map that would feature all of the outlines of the land masses, but printed on a white sheet of paper that wouldn't look very good.
I suspect that either Hasbro or one of our resident artists will have to supply us with that. Perhaps we will finally get to see some of the other generals that way.

Well I'm not sure what Hextr1p wants to do but I'm going to go ahead and set up the text just in case he wants to apply it into his work. I think this would be a fun type of colaborative effort for the creative folk here, :)
It will also be easier for me to finish up a drawing of Utgar now that I can see what he is really meant to look like, :D

The Airborne Elite use Tommys (Thompsons) but making out it's range is not the way to get the horizontal scale. It's better to make out how much an average joe can move in a round, and a round is... Nice, you cant make the scale ;)

Yeah, any help is appreciated. So do as you will.
Eventually, I think it would be cool to have printable maps available in standard sizes like 8.5x11, 11x17, maybe 12x18, etc. The larger format maps might have to be a special kind of thing, as finding a host for such large files could be a pain.

Not if you have a Roland SP300 but I think I'm one of the few here with access to stuff like that, :)

I've got an HP5000ps plotter. It's pretty nice, but not many can afford the $15,000 price tag. :P

I would guess that if I had to apply a scale I would say the hexes represent 8' of distance. So a mile would be 660 hexes.

I'd love to have a six color like that. My CMYK still does great though it's a #!@$ of alot better than the Roland CAMM1 that I was using (ancient tech).
Are you working with a 30inch or larger?

Umm, did anyone notice that Jandar has a frickin FLOATING CASTLE!
and the only way to get to it is in a boat via his aquaduct(?)! and then the water falls off his little castle island.
WAY COOL!
or is it Utgars castle? hehehehehe

If you are talking to me, the HP5K is a 60" format double spool plotter. And the six colors are definitely nice. Though to replace all six ink colors costs $1200. Heck the printheads cost $900 to replace. And then there's the infinite amount of paper of varying sizes, types, and qualities.
I know a guy that works in another shop in a different county than mine that has a plotter that will print on canvas. I want to see if he would be willing to print this on canvas for me. I think that would look super awesome.

Yeah, but if their range is true to the weapon then they would be several hundred feet tall. My mind prefers peeshooter guns over gigantic humans.

If the hexes represent true distance and we assume that Sgt. Drake is 6 feet tall then I'd say that each hex is about 8 feet across.
If the Airborne Elites' rifles range represent true distance then 8 hexes would represent at least half a mile.
So the guns are either shooting 64' or the Airborne Elite are really really really tall.

What is the dimensions of an HS Hex?

considering the map really doesn't advance our understanding of Hex scale, I think scale issues were hashed out pretty good in the above thread.

Now, back to talking about that floating castle! I mane, it looks like you have to ride an antigravity moat to get there! In a viking ship! or maybe a pirate ship! And it looks like there are kyries flying all around the castle, perhaps demon kyries. looks a lot like Utgar's evil castle of antigrav rivers from the sea, help aloft with mystical japanses lodestones that he swiped from his buddy Einar, no doubt.

It's Jandar's castle (from the text next to the picture), the Fortress of the Archkyrie, and it is on shear cliffs. That is a raod with bridges going up to the castle.

oh, thats sorta a bummer.
It does have some pretty cool gothic architecture though.
Is it supposed to be in the middle of the sea, or is it hanging out like alaska, and just put there because the mapmakers couldn't find anywhere else to put it? If it is, do we know where it is actually located?
I'm pretty sure Jandar's castle wasn't released as the castle scenario

Could be out at sea, might be high in the mountains or in the Thealenk Tundra. Those shear cliffs could be made of ice.
The castle senario is the west barbican at Idona Castle. Looks like that is in Nostralund.
