View Full Version : If you had to recommend 1 GenCon Tourney...

For someone who plays casually (army theme over all 'A list' units), and wants to have a good time playing with folks who are NOT overly competitive (fun over winning), what GenCon2009 tourney would you recommend playing in? Would you recommend playing at GenCon? I'll be there all 4 days so any options are open.

Thanks gang,

If you're still there on Sunday, Unique Hero might be a good fit. It was probably the most laid back event that I played last year. (However, I think it's single elimination this year, so it might be a bad idea). There's also a Marvel-allowed event on Friday night.

My personal favorite event from last year was Heat of the Battle. Instead of normal starting zones, each player takes turn placing their army cards anywhere on the map. You see some really unconventional builds.* Pretty much anything but the Krav are potentially very good if you build your army right.

*I went 4-1 last year with this:
4x Roman Legionnaires 200
Me-Burq-Sa 250
Ne-Gok-Sa 340
Johnny "Shotgun" Sullivan 405
Isamu 415
Otonashi 425
1x Dumutef Guard 450 (24 hexes, 10 cards)

And I know that at least one of the guys in the top 2 played a bunch of Samurai, even including the Kozuke. I thought HoB was by far the most fun tourney that I played.

I have to agree that Heat of Battle is the most fun. Especiallywhen your opponent targets his own figure for a shotgun blast to try and kill your units that have him surrounded only to cause damage to only his figure and none of yours

Here's my battle report (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showpost.php?p=649943&postcount=13) from HoB. Complete with some very fun moments, including the one Onacara mentioned.

Since you state you prefer themed armies, I would recommend the "General Wars" or "War of the Worlds" events. These are both Swiss style, so you are sure to get 5 games (important if only playing in one event), and they fit the themed armies better.

Smack Down is an option if you have fun in a normal tournament environment, which I do. It's a little less competative than the Championship. As for fun special ones, I suggest Heat Of Battle, General Wars, and War Of The Worlds (haven't played this one yet - new event - but it sounds overly cool).

Hey I remember that army.. (Up for a rematch this year ;) )

Thanks for the ideas so far gang. Nice to get a bit more information on the games beyond the descriptions. I'll have to figure out what guys I want to play and then fit them to the format. Should be fun. Here's hoping that WotC comes through with a promo again this year. Skahen has been a blast to play (when i don;t get her killed on the first turn).

Jexik, read your report. 4-1. Way to represent for us Illinoisans!

I'd just chime in (late) that I really enjoy Heat of the Battle too.

Thanks all for the input. I eventually went with the General Wars because I like the constraints of having to make an army from a single general. Cool theme opportunities and it really forces me to draw from a fraction of the HS figure pool.

I really wanted to go with the Heat of Battle but my wife and I like to keep the first day open for hitting the main floor, partaking as many demos as we can, and buying things before the stock runs out. Saturday just seemed to be perfect for a 5 hour stint of HS.

I look forward to meeting some of my fellow HSers and rolling heaping fistfulls of dice.

C',mon August, where are you...:poke:
