Yes yes, y'all!

I'm still floating on a cloud after seeing one of hip-hop's all-time classic acts last night, De La Soul. They were fantastic, and the opening act, Lyrics Born, a homie of mine, was just as good, if not better. To make it even sweeter, we got in free! Did you realize that De La is doing a 20th Anniversary re-release of their seminal debut, '3 Feet High & Rising'? 20 years... Amazing. Plus, they have a new record out in April. It got me wondering how many of my fellow 'Scapers love the hip-hop.

I'm no hater, I love all types of music [Rock, Soul, Jazz, Country, Blues, Folk, Classical, Funk, R&B, oldies, etc etc etc]. I'm not trying to start any arguments about what is and isn't 'real' hip-hop, or 'hip-hop vs rap', I just wanna feel the love...

So if you love hip-hop, let me hear you scream!!!

Just for the record, some [but not all] of my favorite hip-hop acts, in no particular order, include:

Kneehighs [representin' the 619]
Lyrics Born
Pigeon John
Blackalicious
MF Doom
Jurassic 5
Mos Def
Talib Kweli
De La Soul
A Tribe Called Quest
Beastie Boys
DJ Shadow
Public Enemy
Outkast
Del tha Funkee Homosapien
Kool Keith [only sometimes, but especailly as Doc Oc or Black Elvis]
etc
etc

I'm sure there are many many more that I'm just not thinking of at the moment, but I'm sure you all will remind me!

Lyrics Born is one of my all time favs, but you forgot Del tha Funkee Homosapien!

You have a great list here! I remember when 3 feet high and rising came out, has it seriously been 20 years?

My friends brother bought it and we would listen to it in secret in the basment, good times.

I really think that Lyrics born is doing a great job keeping good modern Hip Hop alive, him and Quannum making great records gives me hope! Now he just needs a Duet with Mike Patton, another Bay area favorite of mine, and all will be well!

Yes, it really has been 20 years since 3 Feet... 1989. I din't even realize it myself until they mentioned it at the show. That record seems to bring back good memories for lots of folks. BTW, Del has been added to my list. Man, where would Gorillaz be now if it wasn't for his prescence on that first album? Rhythm, you have it or you don't, that's a fallacy!

LB is indeed doing everything he can to keep hip-hop fresh [yes, all meanings of the word] and exciting. His last album [Everywhere At Once] was his most diverse yet, with lots of rock, funk, soul, and of course hip-hop goodness to spare. His live shows are truly amazing... no DJ for him; he has a keyboard player, guitar, bass, drums and of course his lovely wife Joyo Velarde doing soulful vocals with him. Great stuff, you must see him if he rolls through your town.

An LB duet with Mike Patton would be great, and I think i read something [on this very board] about Faith No More reuniting [EDIT: I just checked, and Mr. Danson started that thread!], so at least he's still active. If this ever does happen, it'll probably be at some Bay Area show... Mike Patton will come out on stage and do a song or two with LB to everyones surprise. We'll read about it later, but Ted Danson will have the satisfaction of knowing he called it!

Quannum does put out some great records. I especially recommend General Elektriks's first one, Cliquety Kliqk. It's just one French guy doing everything, but it's a fantastic record and features appearances by Lateef the Truth Speaker and others. I just found out that he has a new record out now, which I must go out and buy. LB is also now on the ANTI record label, the same label that Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Tom Waits call home.

Good stuff!

Anyone listen to Immotal Technique?

Not yet, but if you're suggesting it based on the other groups on my list, I will be checking it out soon for sure!

Thanks for the recommendation.

Huge Wu-Tang fan here. I've listened to others over the years but I've been listening to Wu-Tang for a long time on a consistent basis.

Wu-Tang isn't my favorite, but I do like them and have tons of respect for them; they are indeed real hiphop! They are my brother's all-time favorite, so I've heard a bunch of their stuff. ODB was always my favorite, and you can't go wrong with their hilarious appearances on the Chapelle Show either.
