View Full Version : New Terrain in Booster Packs

With Wave 5 booster sets being released with snow terrain, I was wondering what types of terrain Heroscapers would actually prefer.

I'm pretty sure that snow is being included with wave 5 boosters because it's cheaper to make (no multi-colors), but I hope that the people at Hasbro were actually thinking about us, the customers.

While I'm sure most people will choose either Road or Water tiles, I think that Ice or Lava would be good as well. Anything to mix it up a little.

I was going to add "Additional Tree" or "Additional Glacier" to the poll, but those aren't really terrain types. And I can't see Hasbro ever including something like that with the boosters.

well, since lava was exclusive, we'll probably never see it in small expansions. I'd like to see ice, water and road/wall walk pieces or even battlements.

I also think the should start including glyphs or other minor additions to the game such as additional flags for the castles, or new door designs, or something

Definitely water and ice, you can't have enough of these!!!

i'd definately say water 100% if it was sparkly. I have 3 ms worth of sparklies, and don't wanna go back to mixed.

Ladders is what I want most. I've got two castle packs so far, but there just don't seem to be enough ladders to go around...

But since it's not an option, I'm voting road/wall walk. ^_^

Standard terrain - uh, no.

Snow - I like that Wave 5 is snow, but I really would rather have more TT sets. Not that I'm complaining; I like it better than the regular three.

Ice - I like this idea. Complements Wave 5.

Water - *cough* sparkly *cough* Give me sparkly water or stop teasing me.

Lava/Molten Lava - I hardly use the 2 VW I have. If I "needed" more for maps, I'd just go empty some shelf space for TRU.

Road Tiles - I would say only if it is Wall Walk tiles. They're just more useful. That said, there are an aweful lot of them in one set. It used to be difficult to make a decent road with 1 RttFF, but the stuff you don't use for the tops of walls (and other castle related building projects) is pretty substantial IMO. If/when I have 2-3 sets, I won't be needing an more road tiles (with the exception of the 5 hex road tile, but that wouldn't fit in a booster).

Ladders is what I want most. I've got two castle packs so far, but there just don't seem to be enough ladders to go around...

But since it's not an option, I'm voting road/wall walk. ^_^

That's what I want!

EDIT: More trees would be good as well, but I think the marketing lady kind of shot that down. :grumble:

Can never have enough water, but I'd hope that they would use the sparkly kind, though that would be unlikely since the newer master sets come with the crappy kind.

Thor

The pieces I find myself often running out of when I build a map are molten lava. The 2 and 1 hex pieces in particular. I usually have plenty of 7-hex molten lava and regular lava pieces left though. I definetly don't need anymore Obsidian Guards either, so buying an over priced VW set isn't really ideal just for the 1 and 2 hex pieces.

I have plenty of snow and ice after buying 10 sets of TT and many multiples of the wave 5 commons. The same goes for roads after all the RttFF and now Castles I have picked up. Finally there is the regular terrain, which came in the MS and in waves 1-4. Got plenty of that too, including the water. It's been a long time since I have ever found myself running out of any of these pieces.

And keep in mind with water, if they did ever include it in an expansion it most certainly would be the crappy solid stuff. I don't see them all the sudden changing back to sparkly water after they changed to the solid water to save on cost. Not only that, I don't see water being released in expansions because so many people either have sparkly or solid. If they offered water in an expansion they would be forcing you to get either sparkly, or most likely solid when you purchase the new stuff. For those who have the kind not offered in the expansion it would suck. While you can mix the two, it doesn't look near as good imo. Having a few extra solid water tiles in a collection made up of all sparkly, or vis versa, isn't very useful in my eyes.

i'm glad wave 5 has snow. whenever i build with the Tundra set i get annoyed by the 21 ice tiles. too much ice when compared to snow for this set, imo.

i went with Road.

with the castle sets out, Road Tiles become more in need for in and around the castle.

water would be my second choice. but damn it! it wouldn't be sparklies. :(

I think random terrain would open a can of worms we might not want opened. One of the numerous things I like about HS is how nothing is random. You know exactly what you're getting in a pack, so if they were able to keep the darn shelves stocked it would be a snap to complete your collection. I'd be afrad that if they started packaging terrain randomly, there'd end up being rarity classes and all the icky crap that collectible games have to deal with. I could see everybody trying to find the packs with trees or extra castle pieces. What's next after that? Rare glyphs? "Man, I can't believe you managed to get a Black Lotus glyph!" etc. I know slippery slope arguments are bogus, but I really don't want to see HS head that direction in any way, shape, or form. Just my :2cents:

One thing I wouldn't mind though: Randomzied Sculpts for each common squad. Think about it, you still know what you are getting, but there will be a little more variety in the sculpts. No mechanical difference between the randomized sculpts, they just look different. Just an idea

madmanmuzik
September 6th, 2006, 02:33 AM
Hmm. Well, just look at the Favorite Squad Sculpts threads. You can see that certain sculpts are just plain liked more. I guess it wouldn't really make that much of a difference, though, as long as they don't make certain sculpts rare. Like I said, slippery slope arguments are bogus. It seems to me that that might be more trouble than it's worth for Hasbro, since they'd have to make more sculpts than actually came in a squad. I prefer it how it is, but I wouldn't be up in arms if they did that, though. ^_^

The master molds for the sculpts we do get are unbelievably expensive. We're lucky that we get four different Blastatrons rather than four of the same one.

Hence why we are getting two identicle squads of zombies in wave 6 instead of two different squads of zombies in the booster. It would have been the perfect oppourtunity to offer two different versions of the same squad, but alas, no.

Personally I would hate to see random sculpts in expansion boosters, even more so then terrain. I really like some sculpts more then I like others and would hate buying an expansion and getting the "crappy" sculpts. Not only that, what if you bought an expansion and it had 2 identicle sculpts? Or worse yet, three identicle sculpts? Really they couldn't make the squads random unless they ran this risk. This of course would upset customers, I'm sure.

They could make different versions of each expansion booster which all had a different squad scupt, but again that would cost a TON of Hasbro's part for all the extra molds they would have to make. Not only that, it wouldn't necessarily be more profitable. For us die hards it would be great, but for others they would choose their favorite squad sculpt in a pack and only buy that one, leaving the others to rot and cost Hasbro a lot of money. Personally I think the way they are doing things now is terrific.

And like markwars said, at least squads don't have only one sculpt to make them up.

The problem with that is a bush would require an entirely new sculpt and cost Hasbro much more then simply repacking existing terrain. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea, but throwing in a new bush sculpt would be just as expensive for Hasbro as throwing in an extra figure in each booster.

I still say lava. We got snow in wave 5 so why not show lava a little love and give us some more of it? I know it's an exclusive, but 20 dollars for the set is rediculous. Plus I don't want anymore 7-hex molten lava or Obsidian Guards. I'd love to see lava and molten lava pieces in wave 6.

I think water is a precious commodity in HS, but I bought a water booster from House of Mouse and I gotta say that I almost always have enough water for my boards. One thing I'm sick of is Lava. I've got two lava sets, but I find that I can't do much with lava. I can make the lava lake or the lava river, but I just can't mix it in with much else. I usually end up just using it as a base for hills and valleys.
The lava is constraining. You have to keep in mind that it is just like unusuable terrain for 95% of your units. Even the lava rock is just terrain that you can go over, but would never chance a die roll on, so I find lava is a waste of time. Plus, you'd never put it near snow or water, because that just looks dumb, so I never end up using all my molten lava rock stuff unless it is to build something else.

It's true though. I had one lava battle at the last Tourney and would not have won the battle if I hadn't climbed my blast onto a lava rock to get height. The little guy rolled 3 skulls (one for his kamekazi buddy) attacking Nilfy. Nilfy rolled no shields and was put to rest because of that lucky shot. If I didn't have the noots to risk molten rock death, I would have lost horribly. (my Q9 was taken out of the picture by Nilfy far sooner than it should have been).
