Hello, I just saw the 1982 horror film, "The Thing", and boy, it sure was scary. Grisly effects, an interesting story, and one screwed up monster made this a Sci-fi horror winner. Anyone remember it?

Rep + too you for enjoying a great movie, I feel that many people over look this movie but the one's who see it know what scary is all about, and that is 82 I feel if he re-made that movie it would be something to talk about. The Thing is in my top 3 horror Sci-Fi.

Don't give them any ideas! It was already a remake, and a very good one. I think the 1982 version is just fine the way it is.

Exactly; it was a remake of "the thing from another world", a 1951 film.
The thing is...... just one twisted, screwed up monster. I pity the dogs, man- that was a nightmare inducing scene........

I never saw the movie (I'm kind of a scary movie wimp) but I came a cross the novella it was based on at a garage sale a while back. Who goes there? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Goes_There%3F) was a really good read, especially when you consider how old it is (1938 ) If you've got a chance you can actually read it online here (http://www.outpost31.com/books/who.txt)

It was rumored after filming that Rob Bottin, the effects designer for The Thing placed himself in a hospital for exhaustion as well as the fact he was unable to get the images of creations out of his dreams (he had worked 7 days a week for nearly a year and a half on the film's effects) ...

You heard the rumor right, Malechi. It says in the bonus features of the Thing collector's addition documentury ("Terror takes shape", and it's 80 minutes long- almost as long as the film!!!!) that he actually lived in the Back lot for about a year. And yes, he did go to the hospital in the end.

The Thing is one of my favorite horror movies.

The ice and snow look way better than many shows that were made years and years later. If you force yourself to look at the effects as effects, you can kind of tell what kind of contraptions/tricks are being used, but the story, acting, and creatures mesh so well you don't really worry about that if you're just watching along. Pretty faithful to "Who Goes There," too.

Watching movies like The Thing-- where serious grownups make a plan to act against the threat and carry it out-- completely spoils horror movies centered around idiotic high school or college kids who just run around waiting to be picked off. Great movie.

(Also, it has Keith David, a really good character actor. So some bonus points there.)

The difference in this film is that
A) they're out in the middle of no where, with no chance of salvation.
and
B) Since the 'thing' has no true form, it's nigh impossible to kill it.

Both these points make this my favorite horror movie (not to mention that all the monsters look like they came out of a VERY bored person's mind [only a bored person would think to make a human into a gigantic worm-thing with a dog in its intestine]).:p

It's a horror masterpiece by the horror Master Mind John Carpenter. It's one of my favorite movies of all time.
