There has been a lot of talk about Gencon 2009. With the economy in a slump and folks losing jobs, I can't think lof a better way to get our minds off of the real world troubles than an incredible 4 day weekend of Heroscaping, gaming , eating, and drinking with friends.

So we are on folks! That's right! You heard it.

There will be some awesome Heroscape events at Gencon this year and surprises as well. So sign up, get your badge and hotel arrangements, and keep an eye here for details as they evolve.

Does this mean they have been submitted already or are they still in the planning stages?

I saw event submission opened yesterday and wasn't sure how soon the Heroscape events are normally submitted.

Glad to hear that Heroscape will be at GenCon again. I got the opportunity to go last year and it was a blast. Now I just have to convince the wife to let me go again this year!

It's never too early to think about Gencon! Now, he might bemoan Gencon's new registration system, but don't let him get you off on a tangent.

I'm excited for GC. The logistics will be a little tough for me this year, but I'll make it. Hopefully Elstree doesn't have some ridiculous job thing stop him this year

There were so many people there for the events last year, it was crazy. I look forward to seeing all that excitement about Heroscape again.

Where is it this year??? Is it at the same place as last year??? Also could someone give me a round about price of how much it costs???

It sounds interesting, and I might consider trying to get there.

It is held in Indianapolis, Indiana, same as last year. Badge price is usually about $65 for a 4-day pass, if you pre-order. At the door price is usually $10 higher. You will also have to figure in the cost of travel arrangements to get there, and lodging for the duration of the event.

I have had the pleasure of attending for the last 2 years, and I'm very much looking forward to coming back and playing some great 'Scape with you guys again this year. :D

You will need a badge as well as the individual event tickets. If I remember correctly, you couldn't even get into the hall the Heroscape games were being played in without a badge.

Onacara

The 4 day pass only gets you in the building...each and every event has its own entry fee depending on what it is. You can either register for events (recommended) or buy generic tickets (usually worth $1.50 or $2.00 each) and then get into an event that has an opening using the number of generics equal to the event cost.

But it's not too early to go and create your new account on the GC page. They have pushed the reg date back and wiped out all of your old info. (What a pain in the A S S !) I had to fax them copies of my old account so they could apply the credit to this years badge.

My dad and I plan on showing once again this year, and every year coming after this as long as Heroscape tournaments are there. We'll also try to sign up (plane tickets, hotel, registrations, etc.) within the next couple months so we're ready in advance. Like last year, we'll also sign up for as many Heroscape tournaments as we can fit in. I will also bring my camera and now that I know I can take more than 50 pictures (200, about ) I'll make sure to take lots for memories and all here that could not attend. And, for Christmas, I recieved a very nice Kodak Zi6 video camera that I still have to practice and test out. After I got that, I made a youtube account, so any videos I take at GenCon 09' I'll post em' up and share them here. I look foward to seeing you all again in 09', and hopefully with new wave 9 figures to include in the tournaments! :) :gencon:

I like Onacara's idea (from this post (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?p=652048#post652048)) where we rent an RV and pick everyone up on the way.

Though my water heater decided to die over the weekend and destroy part of my basement, so any unrealistic plan of me doing this went right out the window with that. :(

Norkov, I offered a ride last year to anyone who wanted to go, but there were no takers. I'll probably be driving again this year, too.

As Cavalier noted, we've got a pretty good and varied group in Central Arkansas and would love, when the weather allows, to expand to the southern part of the state.

Can't wait for this!! GB, are there going to be any new events or ones being taken out, because now would be the perfect play-testing time. Also, when we went last year, I was rather disappointed to not see the giant map. Is there any news on how that situation will be sorted out this year?

From my experience I'll try to answer your questions. I'll bet the events, and maps (maybe even glyph pools, etc.), will most likely be different than the previous year. I say this only because every GenCon Heroscape event selection is different from the previous one, as is the maps and glyph pools, and they may add some or include previous ones. But, I do believe that last year's had the best aspects (events, maps, glyph pools, etc.) yet so I'd expect this year to be more similar to the previous. I hope they will keep General Wars, Main Tournament (Obviously they will), Heat Of Battle, and some kind of other normal tournament like Win-A-Wave. So I'd expect some changes for Heroscape events and aspects but there's a good chance it will be similar to last year's greatness.

As for the huge WotC Heroscape display and booth, it looks more promising than last year because a set (wave 9) is coming out close to August (GenCon).

After saying that I'm more and more excited for GC 09'. :D

GC ROCKS - man did I have a blast, I just hope I can make it back this year now that I hve the lay of the land, and know what to expect - it would make it way way better -

Plus I would actually play test stuff this year ( getting 5th in the nat. is not bad for no real playtesting I figure ).

But to be honest I think it might be tough for me this year, we are just finishing up a new house and we are in debt for the first time in our lives.

I have even told myself to get a nicer bag for my armies ( but not sure I can pull that off ) -

Oh yea And I promise to try harder not to steal Raelin this year.

We used an old camara bag we had to carry the figures. It is padded, had a shoulder strap -- worked great. We put individual armies in ziplock bags (made it easier for sorting the different armies between mine and my sons). We put the cards in an old CD case (the thicker ones not the thin ones) -- it protects the cards and fit in the side pocket of the camera case.

You cannot sleep in the convention center...they will throw you out. We witnessed it first hand last year.

I missed this -- I'm sure my imagination is making this out to be funnier that it really was.

Just your armies for the games you are playing in (no side-boarding) and your dice/wounds/order markers. No need for terrain of any sorts. I bring all of my stuff to the hotel, but only my guys I need to the convention hall. Don't want them stolen or having to carry them.

Between my dad and I, we just lug around 1 (fairly small sized) suit case and then anything we buy or win. It includes our armies for the 4 days, about 7 each, and anything else for Heroscape tournaments and we also bring snacks and drinks. Cliff Bars, Granola Bars, Crackers, Trail Mix, anything like that is great for snacking, then we bring Water, Vitamin Water, and Propel as well. A main trick for GenCon is not to spend your money on food there, spend it on gaming and any accessories you want that they sell their. Just bring enough food from home to last you throughout the day and eat a good, late (about 8:00) dinner when you get back to the hotel.

My Dad basically payed for our trip, hotel, etc., my grandma and mom gave me money for food, and I brought my money for gaming and products sold at GenCon. All in all I think it was close to like $1,000 for us in total, but we had to pay $20 for a taxi there and back to our hotel. Maybe it was a lot less, or a little more, I have no idea. But just keep in mind that you have to have money for plane tickets, hotel, and food aside from tournaments and personal bought items (products they sell).

To GB,

I hope that with the addition of the Battlefields of Marvel, there could be perhaps a second Marvel event At GenCon. Last year only there was only one (Marvel Power of One), so perhaps with the renewed interest in Marvel a second event could be added.

Respectfully with hope,

I am heading out FOR SURE from Cincinnati and likely bringing the wife and kids.

As for places to sleep, a hotel is 100 bucks and in summertime it's pretty decent weather in Indy, so rent a car for 60$ a day and sleep in it. Drive to any YMCA and get a shower for 2$ a day. Back when I was a student I lived in my car for 6 months and it worked out really well - gotta love YMCA.

So, for those who are on TIGHT budget constraints, there's your answer. Rent a car, drive out, live in the car and if you have to drop a deuce, just park in the McDonald's parking lot and toss one down, then hop back in the car and sleep.

Great link GaryLASQ! Interesting that the totals of Heroscape events went from 6 to 9 to 17!

Also to ET86, I definitly hope there will be too. I can just see so many players playing on that amazing bridge by peterparkerh.

To SuperflyTNT, that could definitly work except for that there would probably be three of us going and I wouldn't make that decision the adult driving us would (still under 16 :frustrated: )!

Hate to burst your guys' bubbles but I don't think you'll see more than 1 Marvel event. I could be wrong, but unless Marvel Wave 1 comes out there is nothing to promote the figures. Hopefully it does (I really can't say my predicition of it on if it will or not, it's been so long and so little word about it so it's leaning towards the drop side but I can't tell) and we could play another second marvel event, or at least one good Marvel figures allowed event (if Marvel wave 1 comes out).

We set up once and tear down once. We will not be rebuilding maps for each event or for each day. The maps chosen will be for all of the events, for all of the days. If a map isn’t suitable for all of the events, it will not be chosen.

Understand, that putting on multiple events each day for all 4 days is not easy. The preparation and time required all along the way is taxing. We like to enjoy our Gencon, too.

The last thing I am going to do or ask any of my volunteers to do, is spend their precious GenCon time tearing down 15 maps on a Friday night to have 15 new maps for a Marvel event the next day.

Lastly, we had 50 slots open for the Marvel event last year. It was only half full. All others events sold out. It is hard to argue with facts and the facts show that the Marvel event was the least popular. That said, we still have plans to include a Marvel event but two does not seem probable.

The last thing I am going to do or ask any of my volunteers to do, is spend their precious GenCon time tearing down 15 maps on a Friday night to have 15 new maps for a Marvel event the next day.

pit8, no one is trying to poop on things. We have to make decisions about what the majority of people will play. It looks like we will be running the events ourselves and as such the last thing we can afford is to have a half empty event. We are only in it to break even and if we offer reasonable prices but then the event does not sell out, we are losing our own money.

I gave up my seat at the Marvel Event to be a judge on Saturday morning. Taebelwalker took my seat and faired pretty well I think.

The Marvel Event also may not have drawn people who anticipated that they would be in the Championship Day 2 and didnt want to buy tickets to an event they hoped they would not be able to play in.

In which case, it was wide open for walk up and generics, but we had hardly any takers. In fact, we waited a good bit and started rather late to see if we had more potential sign up. It didn't happen.

The Marvel event will not be opposite the Day 2 of the Championship, so maybe that will help.

Maybe, but we posted every week prior to the event that there were still spots available and we pointed it out on Thursday and Friday that space was available in that event. And every person who walked up and asked about events we indicated that the Marvel event had space available. I felt like a pimp. I was begging people to join me in that event. It didn’t happen.

In contrast, the prior year's Slugfest was opposite Day 2 championship. That event sold out before the con started.

It may be a bit late, since the events were submitted (Knew I should of been keeping up with the thread)... but I would like to see an event similar to what I have been working on for the latest MI game day. a "Build & Battle" event.

WOTC does not have to supply the terrain for this one, since players will be bringing their own... so empty tables is all that is needed.

This means only people with spare room to bring terrain with them will want to play, only a few peices of terrain need to be brought though, unless you go overkill on your map.

Or maybe it could be the LAST event, and a few people that fly in could take turns picking from the terrain/battlefields that are setup on the tables.

I have been changing the rules concept a lot the last few days, in preperation for the next MI game day, but I like the current version.

It obviously needs a little work to be converted into a gencon friendly event. The gencon specific rules could obviously be less Amy and Battlefield points to keep the size down.

I certainly concede that that game was decided by the placement of the attack glyph rather than the skill of the competitors. By the way, thanks for putting closer to me!

My dad and I are set for badges. :D. Now we need our plane tickets and hotel registrations and we're set.

By the way, do you all have any specific hotel suggestions? Last year we stayed at the Radisson and the year before some where close to the Radisson. They were both really nice in all, but it killed into our money that we had to pay for a $20 taxi from there to GenCon and $20 back each and every day, for both years. They were closer to the airport than to GenCon. I was hoping this year we could plan way ahead (which we're starting) on a hotel so it can be closer to the convention center than to the airport, then we'd only have to pay like a $20 taxi there from the airport when we arrive and one when we leave Indy, oppose to 2 each day. So what are some good hotels right near the convention center, or do you all get hotels approx. 8 miles away and pay for an expensive taxi each day?

Cleon - we where by the airport last year and drove the back way instead of the highway ( my friends car and he was driving ) so it was 25 minutes, and then we paid 20 to park for the day. We always got there early and parked right across the street - so we could go to the car and get stuff.

This year I was an hour and half past the sign in time for hotels, and I got the Hampton .2 miles away ( nothing connected to the convention center was left )- so I am happy about that, will see how it goes, I am thinking that is min. 4 more hours of gaming for me, but maybe upto 6 ( not having to wait on my friend , just get up shower and head out ). I am paying $110/night, last year I paid $90/night so it is a way better deal not driving and paying the $20 for parking ( not sure how I am getting there yet, but someone will have a car and I know the hotel charges for cars ).

Who know next year I may just get a room adjacent to the convention center - but I am happy with a room and a ticket for now. I just now need to start playing more Heroscpe

bunjee
February 19th, 2009, 08:56 AM
As of my search today, the closest hotel that is part of the block with available rooms for a party of 2 is 8 miles away from the convention center.

Now, that said, there are hotels in Indianapolis that aren't part of the block, but you may not be up to the prices. If you uncheck the box about available hotels, you can see the full list of hotels that are part of the block so you can contact ones that aren't.

Good luck all, I'm still a little shocked at the fast sell out of rooms. Either it isn't a lot of rooms, or it is a lot more people than I'd thought.

Correction, the hotel site doesn't list all the hotels it originally did, even if you don't mark the available hotels. I made a note of them, I'll see if I can get a list together.

My place is easy to spot Clicky, (http://pixdaus.com/pics/Dg2UFlAiDH3XJe8wiu.jpg) :joke: and I've got lots of room, so it wouldn't bother me to have company... but the wife might be a different story.:headshake:

She tolerates the game because she sees the fun we have playing, but I have tried several times to get her to play a game with us and she won't.

I know all of us build our HS volunteer time around the events that we want to play in so we need that info first. Of course, we can always use extra hands at set up and take down. Is there any word from WotC employees or any running the Heroscape booth on Heroscape displays similar to GenCon 2005-2007, meaning better than last year's attempt? I know 2008 WotC were mainly focusing on new Magic and D&D Miniatures and didn't want that much distraction, and that's understandable as long as there's some support I guess (and tournaments :) ). But any word yet on this year, if WotC has told if they're not focusing on Heroscape or not?

I think they will do better displays/support than last year since sells are doing good and Wave 9 is coming this summer.

As normal will Wave 9 be aloud in the events? I am pretty sure this is a yes since people were playing the exclusive in the first event last year. But man I wish we had more info on wave nine then so we can plan.

There is usually this down time between ticket/hotel purchase and Event registration opens April 19th. The list of events submitted by the March 20th deadline is expected to be out a week earlier, hopefully it will actually release sometime on Friday or Saturday to give people some weekend planning time.

In past years any Official units have been allowed in tournaments as long as they were available as a promo giveaway or for sale in retail channels.

I'll leave it to GrungeBob to explain the hierarchy of the event running.

You do need to register in advance for the events. I am not sure the date the events go live at the Gen Con website (http://gencon.com/2009/indy/pm/events/default.aspx), but it should be very soon.

You will not be able to participate in all the events. It simply isn't possible because we have some events running at the same time. Also, in the past the Gen Con website did not allow the same user to sign up for 2 events happening at the same time. So not only is it no physically possible, it isn’t even an option. ;-)

Each day they will be a "BIG" event, one of our popular tried and true events: General Wars, Heat of Battle, and the Championship. Those events will be run unopposed, if you will, but the other, lesser events will be running at the same time as another lesser event, so for the smaller events you will have to choose.

Last year, the Pastimes events did not come out in the initial event registration list but came out a few weeks later; this may well be the case again this year. We have been working with them on some of the logistics and they do have all the information needed. They have already submitted our events along with their entire catalog of events. I would prefer to wait until the events are actually posted or until I have confirmation that they will be posted as submitted, before we list them out. All of this should happen soon.

Gen Con, the annual convention for gamers and fans of science fiction and fantasy, has agreed to return to Indianapolis through at least 2015.

According to a statement today from the Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association, Gen Con organizers signed a five-year contract extension for 2011 through 2015. The convention has been held here since 2003.

“Expansion of the Indiana Convention Center and future increases in our Downtown hotel inventory were crucial components in achieving this extension,” association President and CEO Don Welsh said in the statement.

Gen Con is one of the city’s largest conventions. It typically generates about $26.9 million in visitor spending over four days.

Attendees include tens of thousands of hobby gamers and science fiction fans from all over the Midwest. Many of them are known for donning wild, elaborate costumes and staying up all night to play card and table games with friends and strangers.

This year, Gen Con runs from Aug. 13-16, and will occupy the Indiana Convention Center and meeting space in surrounding Downtown hotels.

Future conventions are set for Aug. 5-8, 2010; Aug. 4-7, 2011; Aug. 16-19, 2012; Aug. 15-18, 2013; Aug. 14-17, 2014; and July 30 to Aug. 2, 2015.

Gen Con will get access to the expanded Indiana Convention Center starting in 2011.

“Gen Con has been good for Indianapolis and Indianapolis has been great for Gen Con,” said Adrian Swartout, CEO of Seattle-based Gen Con LLC. “Our attendees love the city.”

The event descriptions are also good; the revisions that GromBloodboy already made in that thread are accurate to how I expect them to come out when Pastimes events are posted. Our events will be transferred from heroscapers.com to whatever name Pastimes uses for their events. Man they're going fast! We're set, fortunately. We each have 4-day passes and we're trying to get them pre-sent so that we have them in our hands before GenCon arrives like the last two years (it works out a lot better that way in my opinion). And we each signed up for:

Thursday: Heat Of Battle, Smack Down.
Friday: Championship Day 1, Lightweight.
Saturday: War Of The Worlds (if not day 2), General Wars.
Sunday: Big Ol' Monster Battle.

As said elsewhere we'll help for tear-down on Sunday.

All we need now besides armies/preparations are plane tickets and hotel rooms.

I plan on bringing my camera and video camera to take many pics and vids!

:excited:

Nope, We plan to spend the non-Heroscape game time walking the main floor, maybe playing a few demo games, chatting with people, etc. My son and I had a blast last year just talking with the game reps in the main hall. Yeah, I know the game reps are paid to make you "feel good" and spend time with you, but my son still liked the way they treated him and took time for his questions, etc.

I'll have my camera too. I'll try to post pictures on the site each night (depending on when I get home). I hadn't thought about bringing the movie camera... maybe.

Nothing wrong with working the hall, that's the best part of :gencon:

I have some late afternoon Colosseum and Small World. Maybe an early AM Power Grid and Alhambra too.

I've cut my personal schedule down to Heat of the Battle, the Championship, and volunteering. I think I'll enjoy that more, being able to spend more time with people, new friends and old. (OK, so I'm the "old.")

Man they're going fast!

Good news to me. Every year I have brief moments of anxiety concerning the events selling well. Looks like that won't be much of a problem again this year.

Thursday: Heat Of Battle, Smack Down.
Friday: Championship Day 1, Lightweight.
Saturday: War Of The Worlds (if not day 2), General Wars.
Sunday: Big Ol' Monster Battle.

Perhaps we will meet in battle this year, I am registered for the exact same events minus Heat of Battle, which I am running. (had to defend my BoM title)

I had been having quite the opposite feelings. (i.e. checking Gencon.com one day to realize all the events were sold out.)

Good thing I wasn't doing my homework today and instead was on Heroscapers to catch the info on the tickets being on sale. :p

I'm up for a practice game or two outside of events if you wanna play more, Rev. :)

I'm up for it, I've always wanted to play ya. Maybe this will be the year? :)

There are a lot of cool events this year, and I'm really looking forward to all of mine. I like the idea of just another competative normal tournament so I chose Smack Down over Capture The Flag. I've been waiting for an event like Lightweight since '07 so that was an easy choice over Mixed Marvel, and because I don't play Marvel figures that often. War Of The Worlds sounded incredibly cool so I chose it over Dragon Wars, again (I chose General Wars over Dragon Wars last year). And The event Sunday was a tough choice, I played Big Ol' Monster Battle in '07 and Unique Hero in '08. I chose Big Ol' Monster Battle over Unique Hero mainly because Unique Hero didn't have too much strategy in my opinion, lots of just luck of dice for wins.

If you are seriously interested in going, your should purchase your pass/tickets ASAP as the event tickets will become scarce in a matter of a few days.

Get 'em while they're hot!!!!I, personally, think it is a real tribute to the people, this year and in past years, who have worked so hard to make the HeroScape "brand" a desired ticket purchase. You and GB and all the other people who have labored for this deserve our appreciation and congratulations.

I got my ticket for the championship, so that's in the bag. People might as well save their money and start signing up for the other events.

Looks like adding to the cart takes the number off the "spots left". there was 9 left for lightweight, I put two in the cart, and now there's 7. I am really surprised at how fast it's filling up.

Not really. It's Day #3 of registration, and you cannot check out yet because of the Credit Card SNAFU. If they don't fix it soon a lot of tix that are in baskets will go back into the available bucket.

There's a workaround for the desperate, do what I do: Every night, after your cart expires go back in and add them back in.

Update at 2:02PM

THE CREDIT CARD ISSUE HAS BEEN FIXED on the RUBI system.
