I don't know if anyone here is interested, but I just found out that there is a movie scheduled to come out in 2007 called Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twighlight.
Here's a link:
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0825245/
I was doing a search on Keifer Sutherland for my oldest daughter and in his bio it had this Dragonlance movie as something that he's working on now, his voice anyway.
I read the Dragonlance books a very long time ago and enjoyed them. Hopefully this animated movie is done well.

I use to love the dragonlance books......and always thought that they would make a great movie....at least up too test of the twins.
But....the dungeons and dragons movie that came out a while back was probably the worst movie of all time, and anything that comes out now in the fantasy setting will be held to the standards that Peter Jackson set with the LOTR trilogy.
Would still like to see em made though.

Lucy Lawless is also helping out with the voice acting. Though on her blog, she says she pulled off the voice by sounding like Xena.
But hey, whatever works, right? Heh...

I talked to a few old D&D veterans that watched the D&D movie and loved it. They all said something to the effect of, "But I played D&D, so I understood it". I was sitting there thinking, "I played D&D, and the movie still sucked". I was watching it thinking that they slapped a ton of CGI test stuff of D&D favorite critters together and a horrible excuse for a story. The story didn't even fit with the D&D setting IIRC.
Drangonlance will hopefully be good. I can't say it will blow as bad as the D&D movie because it actually has a good story it is based on. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Funny I've been thinking for a while that I need to reread the series.

It says its being directed by the guy who directed Ultimate Avengers 2. Has anyone seen that yet? Once upon a time I was a crazy Dragonlance fan. Stopped paying attention when the age of mortals came along though.
Interestingly Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman just released another chronicle. Part of a new trilogy: the lost chronicles. Stuff about the companions that wasn't in the original Chronicles.

Sorry, but you need to find yourself a new gaming group. Absolutely no one that has played D&D with any real interest would even consider that movie anything other than the waste of celluloid it is!

I never gamed with these guys. I would have a hard time in any group with that kind of thinking. Actually, I haven't gamed since I graduated from high school (91). I was really spoiled with my group back then. We had a load of fun, but I made appearances in other groups that SUCKED (they never saw me again). If I ever could find a good gaming group, I might join, but I haven't talked to anyone in the area that even piqued my interest in gaming again.

Has anybody seen any design sketches?
I really hope they stay true to Elmore's cover work.

LOL! Hilarious.
And yeah that first DnD movie was horrible. I never actually saw it but I remember looking at the site before the movie came out and thinking: what the h*** are they thinking? I still remember one of their exclamatory comments:
Well you know how in Star Wars Princess Amidala does... well our princess gets to ride a dragon!
Its a bad sign when they try to compare their movie to the Phantom Menace! Maybe if they had said our princess is hotter but unfortunately she wasn't.
I did get to see a few clips from the movie later when it was on TV. It was bad enough that I changed the channel although I am a huge fantasy buff. They really should have had adults for the movie rather than kids and made it serious instead of hokey. What a disaster.

DnD the movie was on TV? I imagined that would only be on the smaller, local, usually unaffiliated channels that play the really crappy movies at like 2 AM on weekends. There sure are some winners on at that time of night. DnD would be a match made in heaven.

I actually thought both movies caught the spirit of a D&D Quest rather well (The first more so than the second).
The first one was, IMHO, an interesting romp. The second was a bad acting, cinimatography, and effects.

I can appreciate that aspect of it as well. The thing that bothered me perhaps the most was that there seemed to be a bigger priority on getting as many shots in of critters from the D&D universe than there was on story and even accuracy. There was this whole magic and non-magic worlds and never the twain shall meet. I'm like  did I play D&D wrong having a mage in our group? I would have preffered a good story that was true to the game than being able to see a beholder on screen.

No problem. I was reading an interview with the screenplay writer and he was talking about how they are going for more of an adult audience with this movie. He said he wrote into the script Tanis' background of his mother's rape and said he described the deaths of humans and monsters in gory detail in the screenplay. He doesn't think all of it will make it in the movie, but he thinks enough would make it in to challenge for a PG-13 rating (but it will probably be PG).

Regarding the rating, I just got the Ultimate Avengers 2 animated movie and it has a PG-13 rating, so hopefully the Dragonlance People can do the same. After all, there are enough animated movies for young children, there should be some for teens and adults as well. Besides, they can always have a PG rated version as an option on a DVD release so that younger children can watch it too.

I enjoyed the original Dragonlance trilogy and the Twins trilogy as a kid but the stories got tedious after that.
Just watched the Dragonlance toon. It was good and much better than the D&D live action movies. It felt rushed at some points but they had to go through an entire book in under 90 minutes. The film captured the essence of the first book extremely well. Hopefully it will sell enough to get the other two shows made.

I got a chance to check it out last night.
At first I cringed at the opening music selection, but after the "dragonlance" title I started to get into it.
LilNewbie, I had the same feeling; that the story was rushed, just touching slightly on key scenes in the book.
They made a few adjusments from the book, in a few events, added some things here and there.
Im not sure I really cared for it overall. It was fun to get a visual representation of key elements of the story; Tahkisis, Paladine, the Characters, The Inn of the Last Home...and all that stuff...Not sure I cared for the voice over work though.
They mixed animation styles as well, the simplistic animation style of something akin to the old GI Joe cartoons, with the more 3-D rendered effects of the dragons and the draconians. Wierd mesh.
I think the story would be served better in a live action setting, where the movie could be longer, and the story could be fleshed out more. Just my opinion.

That is what I noticed in the trailer. It is hard to make 3D rendered animation and 2D animation mesh well. The 3D looked really antiquated in the trailer too.
I'll watch it because I remember the books fondly (although the second trilogy was more fun than the first).
Even if it sucks, it still has to be better than that D&D atrocity with Marlon Wayans. That would have been a good one for Joel and the robots to tear up on MST3K.

I agree. The books are not great literature, but they are great action yarns and they have very memorable characters. The books always seemed very cinematic to me (those gorgeous covers to each book really get your imagination going) and I think they would make great live action films. At least they are high fantasy with characters you can believe as heroes unlike this current crop of kiddie centered fantasy movies that have come out since LOTR.

Almost exactly how I felt. I read your post before seeing it, and I could see exactly what you meant. That opening was really bad. The 2D/3D stuff was too much of a contrast for my taste.
My opinion is that it felt like a feature length version of the old Dungeons and Dragons cartoon. I didn't really care for it. It was nice to see the story, but it looked and felt like it was a little too low budget. There's the part of me that wants to see the rest of the trilogy, but there is another part of me that wants them to scrap it and revisit it when they can do a better job.
My wife had never read the book, and she thought it was pretty lame. She thought that there were too many parts ripped off and borrowed from other stories/books/movies. I think most of that is the fact that they had to squeeze too much into too little. It really hurt to rush through it. I think that may be a big problem. There aren't anywhere near enough Dragonlance fans to buy enough copies to force them to make the next two. If the people who haven't read it aren't buying into it there are problems. As it is, I'm a Dragonlance fan, and I'm glad I only rented it.

Yeah, mediocre voice acting and **** poor animation just don't mix well when it comes to bringing this book to the screen. Thing is, it really is the weakest of all of the Weis/Hickman works; they really don't hit their stride until the half-way point of Dragons of Winter Night. Disappointing.
Oh, y'know who I wish had done the animation? The team behind "The Boondocks". Can you imagine how tight those fight scenes would have been? Ohhh, my little heart quivers!
Maybe next time...
