I have fish, well I had more until I got Snuggles. Snuggles is a Big 5 inch Mean Ass goldfish.
I had 6 small goldfish, 11 feeders, 2 minows and one I can't find the identity of. Then My boss bought a new house and decided to take out the pond in the back. Since he didn't have time last winter he waited until spring. Well guess what, he found Snuggles, and that fish was in real bad shape, he was near death and covered in funguss. I had no choice but to put him in the 20 galon with my feeders, minows and Flats (unknown fish) until I got the new tank. He was only going to have to stay in there for about 2 days until I got my check and could get him his own tank. Well in 2 days he ate (didn't eat the entire fish just the tails) 10 feeders and 4 goldfish. I moved the rest of the goldfish into the new tank and left him to the 20 gallon with Flat, the 2 minows and the last feeder. He hasn't killed anymore but things could change.

Until recently I had a border collie named Keira. She was hit by a car and we had to put her down a week ago however, so currently I am without a pet. But we always have a dog around so, as soon as my three year old is over the loss, I would love to go find another.

Well the number of pets we have is in flux right now. A month ago, we had 4 cats and 2 dogs. Our 13 year old cat has disappeared for the last month and it is looking like he isn't coming back. Last Friday, our 12 year old cat got stuck at the top of the garage door. This is evidently more common than you'd think. They fall asleep on top of the garage door when it is open and when you go to leave, they panic and get caught by the door. My wife didn't see the cat hanging there and when I opened the door 3 hours later, she fell to the concrete (cat not wife). She was given an optimistic diagnosis of 50-50. She has stablized over the weekend and is doing better except she still can't use one of her back legs. She makes an attempt to stand about once a day with limited success.

Do you every get those two confused? :P
We have three cats, all American shorthair mixes. The blondies have some siamese blood, as evidenced by their noise.
Earned name: Boopsie
Mother of house, considers herself a short human, very acculturated, understands language and tone.
Brown and white standard tabby striping
Female 15 years old
Original name: Sheba
Common aliases: Boo, Booboo, Bulbonic Plague, Rotundity, Der Katt, Flopsy
Earned name: LO.LA (short for loudspeaker landslide)
Pine brown (mixed orange tabby and siamese) striped tabby
Cute smaller cat, likes nesting, runs round wildly (used to run on stairs, so that's how she got landslide), ex-feral but has learned to trust us and frequent visitors.
Female 7 years old
Original name: Aspen
Common aliases: Low, pest, very small creature, cuuuuuute
Earned name: Sawyer
Pine brown (mixed orange tabby and siamese) striped tabby
Handsome, likes to lay on other cats or people in beds, cowardly, often antisocial but loves to pose. Ex-feral so he hides under the bed for everyone but our closest friends. Not terribly bright but a good hunter.
Male 7 years old
Original name: Nugget
Common aliases: Nuggo, the Slug, Doofus, Whosanidiot, Handsome

We had a cat, but we sent it out to Gibberish's collection a few years ago. Ex-feral runt of a litter that lived under our garden shed. Really pretty black cat with white belly, paws, and chin. Named him Watson because he was the first to "figure out" that we were nice people. Actually, we enticed him with McDonalds' chicken nuggets at first. The rest of the litter died horribly gruesome deaths or ran away, but Watson is 7 years old and really happy and healthy. Guess he was the smart one ;)

Yup skynight, i reefer...After working in the pet industry for 10 years i figured i should have the best. Though my tank is only 6 months old to the reef so its looks NOTHING like what you have going on. We have been adding about 100 in live stuff a month, Just got our halides two weeks ago. But we plan to have it looking exactly like yours, then we gonna go frag crazy and start having the tank pay for itself.

Saw your reef tank very nice.
Got a few questions for you if you have some time
How old is that tank?
And how long have you been into salt?
I personaly have had 10 years proffesional experiance in the FRESH water side of things as i was a sales rep to Wal-mart for Tropical fish.
My salt experiance is limited so its been touch and go so far. Which leads to my final questions... can you answer some salt questions :P

I was into fresh for three years and salt for about four now. I have read massive amounts of info on the subject. Any questions you have I will do my best to answer. Keeping a reef is not easy and requires alot of understanding of natural ecosystems. I will help any way I can. I call my fish tanks Rod TV. It kinda helps keep me passive a bit.

Long and mostly failed pet history.
Current survivors are Sally the Cat (11 years old - and is responsible for the death of another pet (a love bird, no-one saw that coming  ) and departure of 2 other cats), Swiper the ferret (2 yrs, in the past has escaped through an unmanned patio slider and sampled the ways of the world for 5 days, before reappearing in the basement window well after being given up for dead), and Boots the ferret (1 yr, in the past has tunnelled under the basement and disappeared for 4 days)

I read you post and I have to laugh, even though it's tragic for any pet to get out and not be found right away, it just reminds me of when I was a kid. My dad had a ferret, Skipper. Once she got out in the neighborhood and returned all on her own 2 weeks later, and another time, She spent a few days inside the lining of one of my dad's jackets. My mom, my sister and I were suppossed to go over to his apartment to feed her and his cat, Thumper, while he was out of town. Whenever we came in, we couldn't find her. We finally got really worried and searched the ENTIRE apartment. Apparently, she climbed up into the closet and ate threw the pocket, crawled into the liner, and then couldn't get out. Those little critters are sneaky!

Those little critters are sneaky!
I have long been a proponent of the cat being the best pet, but I think our ferrets have won me over. The first one was originally named the Fonz, but after determining that he was a she, my wife didn't approve of my name change to Bea Arthur Fonzarelli, so due to our daughter's delight with Dora and the ferret's typical thieving behaviors (her stash was (is to a degree) our boxspring, in which she would store packages of ramen noodles and Christmas presents lifted from under the tree) she became 'Swiper.' They definitely earn their keep around the house by entertaining.

Not the quickest of response time at play here, but yeah, ferrets' teeth are pretty sharp. Similar to a cat's but more needle like. It is of fair importance to have a well-behaved ferret :)

I don't have the name of it handy, but there's a de-stinkifying solution that we put in their water (plus they had the main offending gland removed - I think all 'commercially' raised ferrets have this done) - still need to attend to that litter everyday - and the smell is manageable.
On an unrelated topic, friends don't seem to come vist us that often anymore...

Well for those of you who did read about pets..
Lost my old man (cat) last week. I had him for 11 years. His age was someplace between 16 and 20 depending on who I listen too.
The vet said that he was the oldest cat he ever had in his office, the oldest one was 12.5, and it was his.
Now, I know I have odd pets. But I was able to watch my dead cat really mess with the vets mind.
I took him in to be put down (We think his liver failed), so we go into the little room (yes I have been with all my pets when they are put down). The vet comes in and we look him over and give him the final shot.
For those of you that have never seen this stuff work, it is really, really quick. Normally, the animal will make one sound, usually a choke sound as they shut down. Now I know that my cats have really bad reactions to meds, but this one was well over the top.
He gets his shot. Then he Meows'. Not a little sound a good strong Meow. Then he did it again. Now the vet freaks out and starts listening for a hear beat, in case something went wrong. As he is listening, he meows again. The vet is really gone now. Really this cant be happening, there is no heartbeat, he is not here. I'm sorry that you are seeing this, I have never (Meow) heard of this happening before. (Touches cat’s eye, no response). Meow, I am so sorry, I don't know what to say, he is not here (Nurse has gone white) Meow.
Total, 8 Meows, lasting appx 15 seconds.
I guess he really wanted to make sure I knew he was leaving.
Now I have 6 left. I have to take the next oldest in for a check up in about 3 weeks. She is 14.

We have 4 cats and two + hamsters.
Cats:
SamIam (or Bubba) is around 12 and black with a white tipped tail. He gets surgery on Thur  Hopefully all will be fine
Emma (or Mermalacious Cornpone) is around 8 and is your basic tabby type.
Hufflepuff (or simply Puff) is 3 and a yellow cream colored striped lardass of a cat.
Actually all are a bit overweight, Puff being the worst. All are adopted from no-kill shelters. We also have a calico we are fostering now (current name Laura which she had when we picked her up and she doesn't answer to it) which may get a home soon. If she goes we will foster a new cat.
Hamsters, we started with two, a female named Myst and male named Riven. This led to 7 new hamsters, one of which we kept...the runt who Riven took a liking to taking care of since he needed help. Right when we took the other 6 to the pet store for credit, Myst had 5 new babies, all of whom are doing well and are a week and a half from going to the pet store and finding new homes.
Myst and Riven are seperated no...momma needs a break from the action, dada is sad. Hopefully Runt is male, otherwise I have a bad feeling about the family closeness thing.

I used to have Hamsters, and mice. Since I got the first ones, about 8 years ago, I have had about 10 hampsters, and 3 mice. I did give most of them a name, but never used it after the first day or 2, they just don't seem to respond to names.
The cats have for the most part, enjoyed it when I get a new hampster (after the others have died), It is like Kitty TV for them. They go crazy for the first few days trying to play (ok, catch and eat) them for the first couple weeks, then it is back to normal. but they will stop now and then to try to play with them again.
and to any who are here today, happy 4th.

The best thing about my cats and the hamsters is when we put the little rodents in the exercise ball and put them on the floor with the cats. Its the closest they get to them and they go wild. We have trained the cats not to bat the ball around anymore. I figured it was a good thing since hamster brains probably cant take that kind of abuse.

We have:
1)A really fat, short, 6 year old Puggle named Annie. (Favorite pet...she's so much fun to pick on! :D)
2)A really mischevious Calico kitten(A few months old) name, who guessed it? Cali.
3) Normally, 10 Chickens of whom we do not name. Right now we don't have any because of the current status of the economy, but we're probably going to get some more in the Spring, assuming things are still reasonable at that point.
4) A Beta Fish named...I forget.
The kitten's story is actually very interesting. We were walking one of the many railroad tracks right by our house(I love the country) and were walking past a farm. So this kitten(Not our Cali) waltzes up and starts following us. We went back to shoo it, and out came 2 more. So, just then, the owner comes by and says, "You can keep them if you want!" So my little sister is like...oh my GAWSH we NEED its.
So we pick the only obvious female of the group and take her home, right? Not that simple. As we walk with our Cali, the other two cats come up behind us. They walked over a mile back to our house with us. We felt so bad, but we couldn't keep them all so we brought the other two back to the farm. And so we have been brought the ever-problematic Calico Kitten.

Cat = Luigi (I hate cats)
Hamster = Molly (I have a 6 year old)

This is the first dog I've ever owned and I am amazed at how close one can feel to an animal. Gilbert's best trick is his ability to give a high five. If I ever get a video of it, I will post it here.

What the heck. I'll post too.
We have 2 dogs: a 13 year old beagle/springer spaniel cross, Patches (he's white with big black spots all over), who, up until very recently, had a major weight problem. My dad spoiled him rotten. We took up camping, he got alot of exercise, and now he's down to 30 lbs., and the vets say he's got a good 3-6 years left in the tank. The other dog is the newest member of the family; an almost 1 year old Shih Tzu, Teddy, who's parents were both tiny, so he won't be bigger than 4 lbs., and has a recessive gene that keeps his hair short (short for a Shih Tzu, that is). He has a fiery personality, and tries to boss Patch around. Patch doesn't put up with the squirt. Teddy knows who's in charge.
We also have 2 chinchillas, which I haven't seen anyone mention yet. Trust me: get hand-raised ones, from a private breeder. They are excellent pets, and they don't smell. They're named Hammy and Mater (from some movies), and both are very well-behaved, enough where I watch TV with them sleeping in my lap.

While vicious looking, this is actually what he does when you tell him to "smile". He'll also do it when he thinks you are mad at him, to try to get out of trouble. Very weird, but I guess it is common in border collie mixes (he is a border collie / German Sheppard mix. We rescued him.
Hard to believe this is the same dog:

Here is my second dog, Jersey. She only gets one picture because she doesn't smile. She is from a puppy mill, so very nervous around people not in our family. She is also a border collie / German Sheppard mix.

Thanks! I can usually get him to look at the camera by saying 'somebody is here!' or 'frisbee!'. He's very smart, and has already learned these words, plus his regular 'sit, stay, down' commands:
You want to play frisbee/ball, do you want to go hunting, squirrels!, deer in the field, are you hungry/thirsty, you want to go outside, and a few others. :) He is beyond all doubt the best dog I've ever seen or had. :D

 You have never met my dogs...:p
Cute dog word recognition tid bit: Whenever I ask my son if he fed the dogs, both dogs jump up and run to the kitchen then look back to see if he is coming.
Also, there is a lady who had trained a border collie to recognize forty different toys by name to prove that dogs have far superior voice command recognition than previously thought. She lays out forty completely different toys. Calls them out by name and has the dog retrieve them and put them in the basket. The dog got all toys by name correctly!

This is one of my two dogs. She's about 9(!) years old now. We got her as a rescue dog 7 years ago. The first day we brought her home she was so afraid of the indoors due to being raised on a ranch that she refused to go inside and spent hours outside. She's come a long from then and I'm reminded of it everytime she smiles.

Reminds me of an old saying:
"A dog will look at you and think: You feed me, you shelter me, you pet me, you love me. You must be God.
A cat will look at you and think: You feed me, you shelter me, you pet me, you love me. I must be God."

So, does anyone here take their dogs hunting? I never take my Border Collie bird hunting, but he loves to chase after chipmunks and squirrels. So far he's been able to chase down 5 chipmunks, 1 squirrel, and 1 rabbit. A good tally for a dog. ;)

My two labs are a breeding pair.
The male (Hanky Panky or hank for short) is 110 lbs and from a prestigous line of show dogs. He is very cool and mellow but protective of the yard, my truck and the family. He will talk to you and tell you how he is feeling with different growls barks and woofs. He knows how big he is and uses his weight very well when wrestling. He's just a pretty boy. ;)
The female (Honey Bunns or Honey) is a pointing lab which is mainly upland game like Dove, Quail, Chukkar (Hungarian Partridge), Sage and Pine Grouse and the like. She is an intense competitor with the strongest drive I have ever seen in a dog. Her whole body shakes with anticipation and when you turn her loose she will hunt with 110 percent energy all day long. She's a tremendous leaper and has no fear. She will leap off of cliffs and into the water f she thinks it will benefit her. We always make sure the cliffs and water are free of obstruction before she does jump plus she wears a vest to keep her from getting impaled. A very smart dog, she requires almost no training. She knows exactly what hand signals mean right off. I've never had a better hunting dog.
The two dogs are in love also. They play very well together lying on their backs and smacking each other with their paws and gently nibbling one another like one would eat corn.
They also play the stereo typical husband and wife role as well. Hank will go out and bark at some thing then Honey will become annoyed, trot out to the back yard and bark at him. If she wants him to sit down she'll bite his Achilles. Honey always is tugging on Hanks neck to try and steer him in the direction she wants but when Hank has had enough he'll smack her with his right paw and hold her down for a bit just to let her know where her auhority ends.
Can you tell I love my dogs? They're a big part of my life. If you have not read "where the Red Fern Grows" then you should check it out. The bond the two hounds share in that book is what I imagine my two labs have. Best dogs I have ever owned.

My dog is a jumper too, We went to a large creek, and there was this bluff leading to 6 feet of water. Me and my brother and my dog simon, all jumped in at the same time. You can't do that with a cat, and like you said J4J, the dog really just becomes part of your life, and you can really connect with them.
