View Full Version : Marvel figs as promos?

How 'bout this for an idea, tough-guys? They could release the 10 reinforcements figs as promos at next years gen con. I mean, they wouldn't have to do a huge production run and even though I can't go to GenCon it would at least get them in circulation. Maybe I'd get a few at NHSD or get lucky on ebay...At the very least, the stats would be available and we could make custom figs...okay, I'm desperate...very, very desperate...:|

Good idea. Maybe just one or two figures for teasers and to get people hooked on Marvelscape, then release the expansion sets later. Because Many collectors would go crazy if they had to go get 10 very expensive figures if they don't make it to gencon.

Yeah, I was thinkiong maybe 5 of the 10 next year and then the other 5 the year after that. I mean, from my understanding people can pick up one promo per day plus one for each tournament they're in. Mind, you, if they actually get released I don't suggest making them promos. This is just an alternate plan in case they never do get released...

You know that very few people on this forum will want to wait 2 years for the 10 Marvel figures to come out as exclusives at GenCon.

It's better then them not being released at all.

I understand that. I would rather they be released as exclusives then not at all as well. I just think that it would cause a lot of people to be disappointed. I think it would be great to release Marvel figures as promos. I think that if the already announced reinforcement figures were released as promos that people would see it as Wizards of the Coast abandoning the reinforcement set. This would in turn lead to more doomsayers. We already have enough of those in my opinion. I think they should release some other figures as promos. It would show that Wizards of the Coast would not be abandoning MarvelScape and would as already mentioned bring Marvel fans to the game. I think it would need to be a more obscure hero because if they released say, Wolverine, he would be fetching a lot more money than I, for one, could afford.

We are saying if it is confirmed they are not being released that we want them as promos.

They cannot pay for the licensing selling the stuff which is why they haven't released it for sale yet so they are going to pay for it by giving it away????
BRILLIANT!!!!!

All right then, Onacara has spoken and that's it.
I guess the only way to get Marvel promos is to wait for Marvelscape to finally get some expansions and people playing it.

I support Marvelscape having a promotional figure. But having 10 at once just can't happen. They'd run out so fast at GC, trying to give 10 to everyone. And if they instead randomly hand each person 1 of the 10 few people would ever get all 10. They'd go high in price as well. 1 exclusive on ebay is average of $40, multiply that by 10 and you're spending $400 on a 10 figure set. WotC also wouldn't waste their time, or Hasbro for that matter, designing 10 different cards just for it to be a briefly produced exclusive set. I respect your creative thinking, but Reinforcements Arrive should only come out as a wave, as planned.

Yeah I see them doing repaints of core figs (Black Suit Spiderman, US Agent Captain America, Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet, Red Hulk, Grey Hulk, and various repaints of Iron man...) but I would love to see these figs even as mail away exclusives.

Marvel didnt sell well and it has 1000X more of a fanbase than Transformers so why would they do that?
Star Wars Scape is the one everyone wants but the licensing is not cheap either.
Cleon
December 6th, 2008, 04:37 PM
If they must have another scape any time soon, I wish it will be Lord Of The Rings scape, but I'd rather them continue with Marvelscape (and obviously with Heroscape as well) and not make another 'scape'.

Star wars licensing costs a fortune. (George Lucas gots bills to pay). So I doubt we'll ever see star wars 'scape and thats just fine with me.
I would like new stuff for classic 'scape and the next wave of marvel. I picked up the marvel set just to try it out. I like it, I still feel like its a stand alone game, but thats for a different thread. Anyhow, after the initial coolness wore off, it has been collecting dust. If they ever release the next set I'll buy it.
I do have to say, releasing it in promo form would be bad. The re-sale on e-bay would be crazy and prices would be way high. Not to mention only people with lots of money would ever get them all. Someone mentioned mail order, I'd be in to that. Perhaps after an initial surge, WOTC would see its profitability.

December 9th, 2008, 05:17 PM
That mail order thing might actually work. See, for any of you who play Dungeons and Dragons in the Living Campaigns, you recieve points everytime you play in a game. These points must be accumlated and 3 times a year they mail out a set of cards to everyone with 20 points and the remaining points carry over to the next mail shipping. We could set it up by having when ever you played in a tourney you got points. If it was at Gencon or at NHSD, then you would get the points that you would get normally multiplied. Once you get enough points they will mail you a character. That way people would be rewarded to play and buy more by getting a special guy. And it makes it avaible to anyone. This might be something that WotC should think about, if they ever come to this site again.

Uh dude Lucas sold the toy licensing rights to Kenner aka Hasbro. It wouldn't cost HAS that much extra to produce a SW Scape.
From the history of this deal.
"The Star Wars toy license has an intriguing history. In 1977, Lucas granted Kenner the exclusive rights to produce Star Wars toys in perpetuity for $100,000 per year."

Hahn I believe that was only for the actual action figure line but I will take your word on it since you know more about this kind of stuff than most.

I do not see in there the post where he told us that if WalMart wasn;t going to carry it that they would not be able to release it...but he did tell us that too.
Look...I like Paul as much as the next guy and he was very insightful and generous to us...but at the end of the day he is an empty suit a talking head etc etc. His job is to talk up the game and not instill fear in the client base. While I will say that I am sure most of the things he told us were true...I am sure creative word use was utilized in other areas....and do believe that he wanted all of those things to happen wether he had any control over them or not.
What would all of you have done if he came on and said..."look I like the game and we will try and get more stuff out but we are really concerning ourselves with MTG and our other stuff right now and if it hapopens it happen"?

I am hoping for wave 9-10 and Marvel in 09 because then Revdyer said he'd pay me $40.

That's $40 you'll never see.
Don't believe me....tomorrow pick up the phone and call WotC HQ n Seattle. Ask to speak to the Mkt Dir or any of the designers on the Scape team. Tell me what they say.

If not GC exclusives, then how about this: you put a single Marvel unit into the regular 'Scape expansion sets, i.e. "Snipers and Vipers and The Thing," or "Samurai and Cowboys and Super Skrull."
If you really wanted to mix it up, you could randomly select which Marvel unit it is, so that people are encouraged buy multiples. If you wanted to upset the fans, but make potentially make even more money, you could put that randomly-selected Marvel unit in a black box, so you've kind semi-blind purchase.
For the record, I really don't want blind purchase for the general game, but I'd take just about anything to at least get Marvel Wave 1 to market.

Ok so all of those people who only want to play MarvelScape then have to pay $12 for 1 figure they are going to use

And also the people that have enough of that pack that they put it in. It would also be wicked expensive to re-do all of the packs that would include one.
Just releasing it as a 2-expansion pack wave is fine. I really like the idea of it, just paying approx. $25 for each Marvel wave. And having a hero pack and a villian pack is cool, with easy title-ing.

I agree, Marvelscape would sell better if they had some common units. Some commons that come to mind:
-Skrulls (squads)
-Sentinels (heroes)
-Cops/Police (squads)
I still think it will sell if only all uniques; I'd still buy multiples because I love to collect anything scape.
