View Full Version : Glacier Bases

I was thinking about glueing the glaciers to the ice tiles that make up their base. Does anyone else use the glacier bases as just ice tiles?

Also, I find it very frustrating to have to hold onto the bases when transporting them. It would probably be easier to glue the bases down.

Feedback would be nice

I'm considering doing the same on one set of tundra. I have 4 and I don't see myself using that many ice tiles. I suggest waiting and only glue them when the pegs snap off.

That is what I'm going to do, though I'm going to try and prevent them from breaking the best I can.

Although the glaciers don't nest together as I assumed they would, you can sort of save a bit of space by putting the smaller ones inside the larger ones. Gluing the bottoms on would prohibit the little bit of storage space saving that one can currently manage.

That being said, has anyone else noticed that the single glaciers don't fet well on the base. The larger ones work great, but the single hex glacier bases seemed to not fit well on top of other hexes, and the glacier itself wobbles/falls off easily. This is true for all three of my expansion sets.

Sounds like they need to do a little work on the molds for making the parts.

I have not gotten them yet, so I can't say for sure.

What about using the solid 2nd edition water tiles instead of ice tiles? I don't have the tundra set yet, but from what I've seen the ice tiles are nicer than the solid water tiles. If the water tiles will do the same trick, I say do it. It saves the ice tiles for use as ice, but still keeps the glaciers functional.

there are small "holes" that the ice "plugs" into, you would have to drill this out. I think the pegs might break off at some point, I would say just be carefull with it. I whenever I get it :( will just store the ice in its own space.

Drilling it would be esy enough just use the ice as a template and decide your bit diameter. This si actually a good idea, and when I am going to consider.

I think I'll just do the one set as the pegs come off and keep it seperated. I don't care for the look of the solid blue under the glaciers. Just my opinion.

I've been thinking about this issue for a year now, and I think I'm ready to comment. I oppose the gluing of glacier bases.

Actually, gluing and using some of the snow tiles as the base might not be a bad idea...

hmmm, got me thinking now.

care to explain why? we just got the glaciers a few weeks ago and i'd like to know why you have your view.

by the way... nice thread resurrection!

I think gluing the bases to the glaciers reduces the thing I love the most about HS--Flexibility.

Unglued, you can use the bases for large ice fields and such.

Oh, and tsukifu, this is the kind of thread necromancy I like to see; a furthering of the discussion (not a pointless post).

Yeah, I was actually mostly making a joke, because somebody was on a necromantical tear yesterday, bringing back a bunch of year-old threads just sort of willy-nilly.

However, I did (way back when I first got the glaciers) have that glacier gluing urge and I'm glad I didn't. Huge, open ice fields are cool, even if you have those unsightly little holes here and there.

Plus, in the end I ended up taking half my glaciers (2 sets out of 4) and painting them sort of a khaki color, like sand. Bases, too. We use them as rocks now and they look pretty sweet. Just seemed like a shame to only have those huge LOS blockers when you wanted a winter theme.

That actually sounds like a good idea. Have any pictures?

Since this thread is back from the dead...

I've been thinking about this quite a bit recently. I think at some point in the future I will get another set of water tiles and glue them together in the proper numbers and placement, and then drill them for use as glacier bases. Then it's just a matter of painting the bases the proper color.

I've also been thinking of something I mentioned in another thread. That idea is to get some of the stuff you can use to coat tool handles and make glacier covers and/or molds. Then I can have rock mountains, lava mountains, etc. with bases that I can use as well as the glaciers. I just need to remember to buy some of the stuff.

Most of the time I use the biggest glacier as a storage device for hexes (mostly water and ice tiles) that are excess to the map. I put them underneath/inside the glacier so that I wont misplace it. Well this only works for me because I only have a very few hex count. But if I had 2-3 master sets then I'd be having a formal storage box of cabinet for the excess tiles.
