View Full Version : New Traveling Drake. Drake on Drake.

EDIT by funrun: Show us where your Drake has traveled! For those not familiar with the concept of "Traveling Drake":
NEW RULES with the release of SotM all new photos, as of 8/28/07, must have some "Drake on Drake" action.
1. Take Sgt. Drakes and a camera with you wherever you go.
2. Snap Drakes' photo, preferably in front of some scenic or recognizable landmark, but even in your office could be interesting. . . see page 4.
3. Post Drake's photo and caption here.
Note that a Traveling Drakes doesn't necessarily have to be a Vacationing Drakes. Members here live all over the world—it would be cool to see Drake in the cities where we live, which for others would be like going on vacation!

Well just an update on Drake. He fits great in a carry on, but when it comes to being photogenic well....
A HS figure is not going to show up in a picture. I think one of our artist here will need to create a Drake ala "Flat Stanley"
Anyone care to volunteer?[/b]

Why not use a macro lens, or simply a better camera angle? It's easy to photgraph small toys if you get the right angle. Trying to put yourself and Drake into the photo is where you might hit trouble.

I took some great close ups last year @ GenCon with the same camera. The closeups were great but when using the Macro the background is out of focus. Who is to say if I took a pis of Drake in my backyard or Central Park. You can't tell.

(Side tangent)
To be honest I haven't been on the "hunt" for these. I was @ my Wally World last weekend and I the shelf was full of Orms and RTTFF. I am afraid that WW is using the same SKU# for the new packs so they will not replenish until those are gone. Come to think of it I haven't heard of ANYONE finding these in stores yet. Kind of odd don't you think?
(Now back to the Drake Thread :P )

Drake did indeed have a splendid time in Guatemala. He climbed temples in Tikal, spent a week by the pool in Guatemala city and went for a horseback ride in the jungle at Antigua. In fact, he has the wear marks on his rear to verify it! There are photos, however, he really isn't very photogenic, as previously noted. Where he's clear, the background is blurry; where the background's good, he's tiny. Oh, well. He had fun anyway, and while we were there, we picked up a little Heroscaper to bring home to the US.

I got tired of waiting for pictures of this mythical Traveling Drake, so I decided to do my own. Any time I go somewhere worth taking a picture of, I'll try to remember to bring my spare Drake. Here he is from our mountain cabin in the Sierra foothills.

No that is fine.
I had issues with mine. Most of the ones I took in Central Park or outside the Dakota were to hard to see. I did get a few good one's at the Top of Rock.

I went to the Boundary Waters this summer, but forgot Drake :( So I'll have to remember to bring him on my next trip--might do some traveling for Christmas. We'll see.

Sgt. Drake was in Seattle in August. He intended to use his grapple gun to get to the top of the Space Needle. That would be the best vantage point in town to spot Utgar scum, after all. However, he underestimated the height of the Space Needle (it's WAY more than 25 levels up) and had to dish out the 14 bucks to ride the elevator like everybody else.

I liked most of that artistic flair and humor that went into those designs....
I really liked the mug - I just wished the punchline had been the alternate one that was suggested immediately after the mug design got posted (I forget what it was.... but it seemed a funnier strip when tweaked).

True. I had actually planned to tweak the strip, and even design others in the same single comic panel style, but with other characters. However, those ideas got shut down when .NET got shut down.

Yup! I couldn't go last year due to work, but the company hired another artist (finally) and I already requested it off.
If they say "Hey we need you here" again in 2007, I'll tell them what to do with their job and go work for someone else....that is, after GenCon, :D

Hmm - hadnt thought anything about that... When I say famous, I dont just mean Craig or Rob, etc etc - I mean Hollywood type of famous. I reckon that would be an impossible task!
For example:
"Wow! Its Brad Pitt! Excuse me, Mr Pitt, can I take your photo? Could you hold this little army man for me please?"
or
"Hey! Its Pamela Anderson! Can I get your picture? Can I just put this little army man imbetween here...." ***SLAP*** "Ow.... my face hurts.." :-(

No snow at our cabin, but a few thousand feet change in elevation (the drive up to the snowpark) made all the difference in the world. It snowed the whole time we played. Great for building snowmen, using the snowball maker, and snow/sand brick maker!

EDIT by funrun: Show us where your Drake has traveled! For those not familiar with the concept of "Traveling Drake":
1. Take Sgt. Drake and a camera with you wherever you go.
2. Snap Drake's photo, preferably in front of some scenic or recognizable landmark, but even in your office could be interesting. . . see page 4.
3. Post Drake's photo and caption here.
Note that a Traveling Drake doesn't necessarily have to be a Vacationing Drake. Members here live all over the world—it would be cool to see Drake in the cities where we live, which for others would be like going on vacation!

Ahhhh I love this thread, but we need more photos! I updated the first post of this thread with the following. I think the last line is most important. I hope this gets us seeing more Traveling Drakes soon. . . !
Well, I posted a San Francisco trip, but only got Taelord's response(thanks Tae!).

Sgt Drake apparently has turn in his Jeep, Humvee, and Blackhawk for the army’s most dependable carrier – FPT ( Four Paw Transportation ). The dog that is in the photo does have ties to the 101st Airborne; His master brings him up to us from From Campbell ,KY for us to dog sit while he is deployed.

No exotic locations here, but I thought I might rep my home town a little by giving Sgt. Drake a tour of Tyler, TX. First stop, Bergfeld Park.
Spot Drake?

This city park sits in the heart of the "Azalea District", an area of historic homes and brick streets. Nearly every home's yard in this area is planted with azalea bushes and dogwood trees which bloom this time of year. This is a BIG tourist draw for the city. Here is pics of two homes across the street from the park. (No Drake).

Drake at the park fountain. Notice the hex's in the back.
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p198/grubbyknubbkins/DSC01267.jpg
The fountain is hex shaped as well. I hold fond memories as a child playing in the fountain during the summer. The fountain was dry for nearly twenty years, but flows again. I had to shoot this photo between the waves of kids playing in the water.
Next stop, the University of Texas at Tyler, my Alma Mater.

The UTT campus is beautiful, set in the wooded environment typical of East Texas. In the center of the campus is two large ponds. Behold the Turtle King.

Drake, meet the King.

I love these photos! Drake on a dog. . . Drake in hex shaped fountains. The last set was perfect—got some Drake in iconic places, scenic places, and hiding places. I found him in all the photos, but it was tough! I like the challenge. The flowers are gorgeous too, seems like a very quaint town.

Nice pics all around but j-Bird's makes me nostalgic. I used to through a paper route in the Azalea District many years ago. The white house go the paper, the yellow one didn't. It would have been nifty to have had Drake scaling the fence at the Mansiel Mansion (spelling?). Hopefully I can make it out to see the azaleas this year. If so maybe I can drop by Caldwell Zoo and get some Drake pics there.

The Sapper family is going to take a trip to the Arctic Circle sometime in the near future and yes Drake will be there with us. I am sure it will be a first for him.
As far as all the mail going to North Pole, I am not sure, but the whole town has a Christmas theme to it. Street names like Santa Claus Lane, candy cane street lights, etc.

Being form FL myself, I agree that it is cold but you do get used to it. People are running around wearing shorts and t-shirts and it is between 30 and 40 right now. And just think a week ago it was -10 to -20.

Today was the first really perfect spring day we've had, 78 and not a cloud in the blue skies, so I took Drake with me on a roadtrip through southeastern Ohio.
In the green space at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, Drake stakes out a spot from which to observe the bikini-clad sunbathing sorority girls. (Sorry, I put so much focus on Drake that you can't see the bikini girls laying in the grass under the white monument :P.)
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10083/normal_bikinis.jpg
Here's the scoop on what makes Ohio University extra special. And I wasn't joking about the bikini girls. . . I just noticed there's one visible in this photo :).
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10083/OU_historicalMarker.jpg
Drake surveys the river that runs through beautiful Yocatangee Park in historic Chillicothe, Ohio. Luckily, the pink flowering trees were all still in bloom.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10083/normal_park_Drake.jpg
The park was so expansive and picture-perfect that I spotted three bridal parties wandering around with their photographers. What a picturesque fairy-tale bridge this is!
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10083/normal_bridal.jpg
Drake also surveyed the historic buildings of downtown Chillicothe.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10083/normal_downtown_Drake.jpg
Not too far from Chillicothe, Drake reads about the 2000-yr. old Seip Indian Burial Mounds (largest one seen in background) and about Hopewell Indian houses (support pole diagram of house is right illustration, some reconstructed cut poles where the house stood can be seen in the untended grass oval area behind the sign.)
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10083/SeipMound_marker.jpg
Drake says "I don't follow signs" as he sits atop a low-level mound to get a better view of the larger Indian burial mound in the background.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10083/Earthworks.jpg
Leaving the Seip Mound information building, I tried to put Drake guarding my car for some of these photos, but those ones didn't turn out quite as sweet as this one, so I had to post this one instead :D. (No Photoshop was used in the making of this photo, except license plate ;).)

I would have posted these yesterday, but the signal my wireless card was picking up where I stopped was so slow that I just gave up on it. Come to think about it, it is pretty bad all over the west, but talk about bad, try even getting signal for a cell call out of Yellowstone!
I tell ya! What good is all that pristine wilderness if you can’t call out and tell someone about it? I don’t think there was a cell tower within thirty miles of the place!
And just try and find a place to turn a seventy foot long semi around. Ha! It ain’t gonna happen!
More cell towers and pavement are not the only things that Yellowstone could use though. Yellowstone has almost all of the official types of Herpscape terrain. There are mountain with snow and ice, rock, sand, grass, pine trees, roads, and bridges! Heck there are even volcanic calderas, and “volcanically” heated hot springs that are said to have therapeutic properties (well springs.) The only official types of terrain that might be missing are ruins and a castle. Mimring felt right at home.
So if someone is planning a “Live action roll playing” version of Heroscape, I think Yellowstone is the place to hold it!
Now you have my assessment of Yellowstone. It needs cell towers, (one per mountain peak should do it) more pavement for large vehicle traffic, some ruins, and at least one castle.

It's totally awesome to see Drake invade the Philippines! Do they sell HS over there? That sandwich on a hamburger bun definitely doesn't look like anything we eat in the US. What is it?

Yep! We have a surplus of wave 5 here also as you guys get flooded with Nakitas. However the distribution sucks here. We even asked favors from our friends in the US to buy us some HS stuff and ship it here.

My favorite photo even though my thumb is in it. Drake kickin back with a local New Orleans microbrew and a totally awesome Nigerian hat that I picked up at Jazz Fest.
Sorry, Drake was AWOL at Jazz Fest so I didn't get any photos there. He was also nowhere to be seen when one of my buddies almost got shot in an attempted mugging two blocks from Harrahs. Never a hero around when you need one...
BTW, thanks again funrun for helping me out with posting the photos.

Man, I lived four years in New Orleans during college. Those photos bring back memories. I loved that city like I've loved no other. I don't mean I loved living there--I mean I really loved the city. I still do, though I hear since the huricane it's not quite the same place it used to be. It breaks my heart to think about it.

I hope the photos brought a mix of good and not just meloncholy memories, elstree. I've taken several trips to the Big Easy, including waaaay before Katrina, coincidentally just prior to Katrina, not too long after Katrina, and just recently with a bit of time for reconstruction under its belt, where I stayed at the apartment of a friend who goes to Tulane. She shared my opinion that New Orleans is a very special and unforgettable city that has always been an uneasy mix of culture, music, and history alongside an undercurrent of violence and misfortune that shaped it just as much as its steadfast populace did.

I haven't taken a Drake photo yet but i did see a poster near my town about a Chinese circus. The funny thing was was the guy on the poster look like an real life Einar Imperium Soldier! I swear it - he didn't have the wings or mask though but he was even holding two swords! I will try and take a pic sometime soonish and post a thread on it.

Here is Drake at the Oakland Coliseum last night.
It was the Oakland Atheletics playing the San Francisco Giants!
The As won the game!
Bonds had no home runs this game. I wanted my son to see a homer, but it didn't happen.
My whole family was there. We rented a skybox for my parents' 50th Annivserary celebration - Whoot!
Sorry Drake is washed out. Couldn't get it to work correctly.

Sgt. Drake accompanied us on our annual trip to Waterton Park in Alberta. Waterton Park is along the Alberta - Montana border and connects to Glacier park in Montana. Together the two parks are called the "International Peace Park". It is a wonderful place and is relatively quiet with not near as many tourists as other parks. We have done a lot of camping, hiking, and biking in the region over the years. With all of the travelling I have done, this remains one of my favourite spots. It is about an eight hour drive from where I live. Most times I am meeting my sibling(s) for a family gathering and a celebration of one of the truly wondrous spots on our planet. All of these pictures are taken from a place called the bear's hump. It is a short hike but it is very steep. It has a great view of the surrounding town, camp area, and the famous Prince of Wales Hotel.
Picture One: WindBlown Drake This is a very windy place and Drake can be seen at the left edge of the picture about a fifth of the way up. A gust caught him just as I set up the picture. Thank goodness he did not fall all the way down, that would have been a two attack dice roll :) The town of Waterton along with the camping sites can be seen as well as Waterton Lake. Looking down the lake you see the USA part of the park as the International border bisects the lake.

Bixby, back in 2002, I was fortunate enough to spend a week in Glacier Natl. Park with my family. Quite an amazing place.
I made an 11-mile hike to visit Grinnell Glacier.
Saw some Grizzly bears too. Thanks to the bears' presence in the park, it was the absolute most tense-filled hiking I've ever done - especially while carrying a 2-year old on my back!
It appears Waterton Park is just as fantastic.
Great pictures. I'd love to get back to Montana and Glacier someday and hopefully make my way to Waterton.
