Received word today that DCI will not be in place in time to sanction NHSD.
Sanctioning update – The development team will not have to set up sanctioning for your events in time for NHSD.
I still will push them to get it done but realistically later this fall.

So our efforts to kick off national rankings with NHSD failed and not for our lack of trying. As seems to be the case lately, our appetite for support and validation meets with positive words, but flimsy action. For my part, I deeply apologize for leading so many of you on with the notion that we would be launching a new era of competitive HS with WOTC and NHSD.

I think I speak for all of us when I say that we appreciate your efforts and there is no need for you to apologize.

Like I said, sanctioning isn't all that special anyway. We can live without it believe me.

Grunge really went above and beyond trying to make this a reality in time. Sadly, it was all for naught.
This is very frustrating for everyone involved; I can only imagine how frustrating it is for everyone else.
However, don't let this diminish our excitement over NHSD. I know we're going to have just as much fun up in New England, and I hope around the country as well!

R~You're probably right, but game stores use DCI and will be more confident in HS if they realize that it is legit.

DCI National Rankings is kind of like the prizes at the tourney .... they are nice ( kind of like the icing on the cake ) the real prize is playing the game and meeting new people and old friends.
My own feeling DCI rankings could or may even have a negitive impact as I would hate to have our tourneys lean toward more competitive (cut throat ) style of play -vs- the more friendly atmosphere we currently have enjoyed.
Just my 2 cents

Hopefully we can get the legitimizing upside when it gets put in place without the win-at-all-costs downside.

Yeah, I dunno if it's even a good thing. A friendly battle without the win-at-all-costs mentality makes a great outing.

Sanctioning would have been nice... But for me, it's the game and other players that really matter. Thanks for everything you guys do.

It'll come in time. The work that you and truth have done over the last couple years certainly doesn't go unnoticed here, that's for sure. I hope eventually WotC will wake up and realize how awesome this game system is, and do what they can to make it profitable.*
I'm still really looking forward to the 18th.
*All they need to do is make D&D 5th edition and the minis game use a variant of the Heroscape rules. Or at the very least change D&D to be on a hex-based grid. I'm just sayin'.

Cheer! Cheer! I second this with " no apology" needed. You have done more then your fair share along with others to kick this off and get it started. We all love the game and sure a "ranking" system would be great but it won't make or break us . For me I play just for the love of the game and the comroddery that seems to follow such things. So to all those involved and most of all GB "THANKS " and don't give up the good fight. I believe in time that thing will come around and go our way. But most important just keep gaming!!;)

QFT. I'm not looking forward to the prospect of things like stinger denial as a standard tactic.
I know I don't speak for everyone here, but I was greatly disappointed by WotC's handling of the GenCon tourneys and so I'm pleased to hear they won't have an official presence in this. NHSD has flourished as a fan-sponsored and fan-run event and I'd prefer it stayed this way.

I have no doubt that this turn of events, if it could even be described as a "turn", will have no impact on the 18th....everyone will have just as much fun regardless - no need for apologies at all.

Personally I wish WotC would develop a better system than DCI for their miniature games, I think DCI has a lot of flaws. It works for Magic okay because there are jillions of magic players worldwide but for a smaller player base it just fails to show anything other than people who get to play the most.

I really do not care either way...We all enjoy being a bit competative but for the most part we all like to have fun.
I walked through the Magic tournament section several times and most of them did not look like they were having fun and isnt that what a game is all about?

Precisely Ona!
If they get DCI up great, if not, great. Either way I am going to play the game and have fun!
Also, thanks GBob for all the work you are doing for us!

I think Ollie's NERV ranking system is all we need. Just need a bit more 'mixing' and eventually the scores will reach across the country (you can only get a NERV score by 1st playing someone who has one).

That is pretty much my feeling as well, DCI would more than likely have strict rules about setup, maps, army construction, that sort of thing and I like to keep it more loose in my tournaments. As fun as it would be to have the bragging rights of seeing how I rank among everyone, it really isnt necessary. But thanks for all the effort you have put in here GB.

Yes, they were a somber bunch. I think the miniatures games in general were more social (Star Wars Minis, WoW minis). The card gamers were very serious. What was that all about?

My personal opinion on this is that if we want WOTC to continue to support NEW Heroscape product we need sanctioned play and all the evils mentioned here that may come from it. The game has been dropped by Target, scaled back at TRU and Walmart (many don't even carry it anymore) and WoTC is leaning more toward small scale operations. IF the game stores out there don't see it as viable, they won't carry it. If there is no customer demand, then there will be no need to make new stuff.
And as long as events like Dr. Weirdscaper's HUGE FORTRESS thing down here in Austin go with a two-person attendance we are in real danger of not getting new units to play with.

That's just one example of a bad turnout, look at all the attendees for NHSD, which truth said himself was the biggest to date.
Further, there was a small tourney held at Marlboro College in Vemont this past Sunday (yes a Sunday, not the easiest day to get attendance for anything), in a very small, out of the way, in the boonies town (no offense to those VTs here).
The last tourney they held back in February of 07 I beleive they had only 10 people in the tourney, most of which were on campus or from the immediate surrouding area. Fast forward to this past Sunday, and the attendace doubled this year with players coming from as far as southern Mass and Connecticut, to upstate NY.
Like your example, mine is only one, but there are similar stories (to mine) out of Florida, Houston, Chicago, Iowa, Ohio, and several more I have failed to mention.

Actually our (Tree Town Open - Iowa) attendence was down from the year before when we had 60. However we still had 48 show up and I was not disappointed in that attendence even though we had planned and was ready for more (up to 80). I have every reason to expect we will have at least 60 next year and most likely more.
This game is too good to have it fade-a-way.

How's the tourney scene up in Dallas? :) That's where I'll be going coming up.
