Massacre in Michigan

2nd Annual Nation HeroScape Day Tournament in Michigan
Date: National Heroscape Day (October 18th, 2008)
Location: Fun 4 All Comics and Games in Ypsilanti, MI (the normal place)
Time: Set up begins at 11:45 am. The tournament will start as close to 1:00 pm as possible.
Cost: $5 (you may bring a HeroScape related prize instead - ask if you are not sure)

Format: Swiss-Style Tournament lasting from 3-5 rounds depending on the number of entries. 8 or less = 3 rounds, 9-16 = 4 rounds, 17-32 = 5 rounds. The more people that show up, the longer the tournament will be. There will be no "final".

We will use Hasbro rules for scoring (full points for Heroes and Squads) for simplicity. Any obvious attempt at turtling or stalling (as determined by me since I don't like anybody and therefore would not be biased in any way shape or form :runaway: ) will result in an automatic loss.

Rounds will last approximately 50 minutes and a 15 minute warning will be given.

Scoring:
3 "skulls" for a total destruction win
2 "skulls" for victory with 400-799 points destroyed
2 "skulls" for a loss with 600+ points destroyed
1 "skull" for a victory with less than 400 points destroyed
1 "skull" for a loss with 400+ points destroyed.

Army: Each player will bring a pre-constructed 800 point army including all materials needed to play the game (dice, order markers, wound markers, etc.) No Marvel figures are allowed. The army must fit within the standard 24-hex starting zone of each map.

Special Rules: Map Specified Static Glyphs will be used. For maps where random glyphs are called for we will use +2 move and +8 initiative.

Selected Maps:

Embattled Fen by GameBear
Requires one Swarm of the Marro Master Set and one Castle set.

Where in Michigan I'm in the South Bend Area in IN?

Ok fellow Michiganders (and anyone else who is interseted), I am going to break down and finally post about National Heroscape Day. I was considering not hosting a tournament this year and travelling to Cleveland, OH, but with all of the hooplah surrounding the event this year, I will consider hosting/planning.

I need to gauge the interest level of having a tournament in MI, at the usual place, Fun 4 All Comics and games, in Ann Arbor. It still seems to be the most equitable place to have a tourney in terms of driving time/distance for the majority of people that usually come.

Please answer the poll question ASAP so I can make a decision.
Technically it is in Ypsilanti.

Hey would you guys be interested in coming down to Northern IN. In the South Bend Area. We need some more interest. It shouldn't be too far of a drive probably closer than cleveland at least. Just follow the link in my sig.

I'm definately in this year! But if no interest in shown, I understand going to another event...maybe i could tag along....

I just sent out an email. I will plan on doing this since I will be hunted down and killed if I don't (I wonder who that was, Ron).

Let's get as many people as possible to play. Hopefully there is enough time to convince those casual players we know to come out and play.

I'm in - along with my son. I'd definitely prefer a touney in MI, but I'd consider driving to OH if its no more than a couple of hours drive.

Wow 800 points and 24 hex limit? Is there any clarification to that?

Wow 800 points and 24 hex limit? Is there any clarification to that?
Sure. You can use up to 800 points and 24 hexes. More points allows more expesive figures. More expensive figures means more heroes and expensive common squads. This will hopefully lead to more HeroScape games as opposed to SquadScape games.

Plus I hope someone brings the four expensive dragons + Isamu. ;)

Alright thanks damja. Hopefully I will be able to make it.

By Mapquest it is a 2 hour 41 minute drive from where I am. And I cannot yet drive. So I doubt I would be able to make it. Probably just stick with the game day/ tournament in South Bend.

Sorry for the double post.

Wow! 800 points in 24 spaces is sure going to change things. I don't think I've ever built an army with that many points in that few spaces. So we'll probably see lots of high-cost heroes, which means we'll see lots of hero-killers (DED anyone?). This should be a lot of fun.

Do you have a link to "East Pond"? I'm familiar with the other maps, but I don't think I've ever heard of that one.

I will try my best to attend if it's at Fun 4 All in Ypsi.

FYI: I just stopped in there the other day and they have a few sets from Waves 7 and 8 for $12.99 a piece, a couple of RttFF for $19.99 each, a Ticalla Jungle for $19.99, and a couple of the large hero sets - Orm's Return and the Aquilla's Alliance for $26.99 each.

Question: do we bring our own terrain, or is that provided?

We bring our terrain. I usually bring 2-3 maps and others chip in too. As we solidify our numbers I will ask people to volunteer to bring in a map or two.

I changed one of the maps. When i put together East POnd I didn't like it as much. I really want to include a Jungle Map so we will go with the BoV map Ticalla Sunrise. I played on this map at GenCon and it was verry solid.

Anyone else planning on coming?

Should be able to firm it up to 100% in the next week or so...

800 points? 24 spaces?

Fascinating.

I live in Michigan and this would be fun, but the truth is, I'm just a teenager, and yeah the third choice in that poll shows a lot of wisdom.

So... that probably isn't happening for me. Sorry.

Oh- and I don't have Ticalla Jungle or Swarm of the Marro. I don't believe I have the recourses to acquire them either.

I would be happy just buying Raknar's Vision, and... well not Orm's Return, just Charos.

Fun 4 All has willingly agreed to allow us geeky nerds (aka "gnerds") to use their facilities for National HeroScape Day without any arm-twisting or palm-greasing required. Let's make sure we thank them on the way in and out of there.

I will start organizing my gear to see how many maps I can put together and let people know what we still need. I would like two copies of each map available to use.

If anyone would be willing to download the "Tournament Director" software to their laptop and let me use that, it would be greatly appreciated.

Let me know.

Thanks

Onacara... Most of us are more north or east of detroit, you will be south of detroit... however I believe pikachu is right in that area.

Anyone up for practice games at BlueDragon? With 800pnts and 24 spaces our armies are likely going to need some test runs... I have atleast 3 build concepts I wish to try out. As for when... when ever the most people can get together.

GromBloodboy
September 24th, 2008, 04:18 PM
Possibly, it depends on my arrival time.

I do have a friend that will be coming as of now, and untill further notice, so add another to the list.

Another thing I wanted to add, with the absence if the glyphs, I have noticed that me and my friends test runs on Embattled Fen and been bland. There is a lack of a urgency to control a certain area, so I just hold back the whole army and let a few go and remove most of the enemy force. I have played on Ticalla Sunrise and Turret Rocks at Gencon and can see that this is also not just possible but likely to happen that someone just holds back.So I don't know if this is possible, but maybe we could allow the use of glyphs.

Thanks!

Blue Dragon is on Mound Road just north of M-59/Hall Rd. It's a pretty nice game store (but they don't carry HS) with a lot of space for open gaming.

I'd love to get together at Blue Dragon, but time is going to be a real problem. I'll try to find a day or 2 that I can play and post it here later.

The problem is that glyphs can severely unbalance the game. Your point is well taken though. I will think on how to encourage more aggressive play.

GromBloodboy
September 26th, 2008, 06:26 AM
What if we take +1 defense,+1 common,+1 unique. We ,mix them up and set them out as map standard. We could add some more glyphs too, like the lucky 20 glyph.

GameBear
September 26th, 2008, 04:47 PM
Just an observation on the glyph discussion: the three maps mentioned - Embattled Fen, Turret Rocks, and Ticalla Sunrise - all indicate specific glyphs. Embattled Fen and Turret Rocks have both seen extensive play using their respective glyphs (Wannok, Astrid); Ticalla Sunrise has been played more often using random glyphs, but the limited feedback on the specified glyphs has been positive.

Using the specified glyphs eliminates the problem of random glyphs affecting the balance of the map. I do not have any suggestions for Hot Heights or Road Rampage, but at least for the other three this is a potential solution. Regardless of what is decided, I hope the maps work out; thanks for considering my maps for the tournament.

Something to consider, for sure. I love your maps. Keep 'em coming. Maybe static glyphs would work better on all of the maps....I'll consider it.

I may end up changing the time to a little bit later to actually start the tournament. I will let you know if I need to change it.

In terms of terrain I will be bringing at least enough building materials to make Ebattled Fen, Ticalla Sunrise, and Turret Rocks. I likely also have material to bring Hot Heights and Road Rampage which I will check next weekend or so.

So I will need people to bring one more copy of each map if possible.

Ok. I've made a decision on the issue of glyphs.

We will use the static glyphs asked for on the three maps that have them (Ticalla Jungle, Ebattled Fen, Turret Rocks).

On the other two the glyphs will be +2 Move and +8 Initiative. Nothing random, nothing left to chance.

I'm getting excited, I hope everyone else is too.

Sorry, I just saw this - I get on here a lot less since they blocked the site from work. I guess its too late for BD now.

Damja - did you get a laptop with the Tournament Director software lined up? If not, I may be able to help.

I'm in the same boat as most others here as far as armies go. I have several ideas, but I haven't tested anything yet. Building for 800/24 is odd - most of my theoryscape armies have hit the starting zone limit before the point limit. It really takes a different way of approaching an army build.

MI_Tiger - don't go out of your way with the TD. I have been able to manage for over a year without it, I think I can handle it.

Just to get you guys thinking about it, I am going to bring back the 3-2-1 scoring system.

3 "skulls" for a total destruction win
2 "skulls" for victory with 400-799 points destroyed

Hot Heights has been built and is ready to go! This is going to be such a great stress reliever. Perfect timing for NHSD.
I too am waffling over a couple of armies. Elves, robots, or aliens. What a game.

Quick question, this being my first tournament and all:

Do we bring ONE army to play for all of the games, or can we bring several armies and play different ones each game?

If bringing several armies is just not something that is done, even though it could be done, let me know too.

EDIT: Ah, the first post in this thread says bring A army. I will bring one then. If this is wrong (or right) let me know. Thanks again!

That is right, you play one army all tournament long.

Well, we're packing the car and I still have no idea what army I'm going to play. My son is taking my original idea, so I'm left scrambling. I'm hoping for some sudden inspiration during the drive. :)

Good luck to all.

Casey and I just got back from the tournament and we had a great time. I just threw together an army when I got there, and did pretty well. I have new-found respect for the Knight of Weston - they're slow, but they're tough.

It was great seeing the regular players again and meeting new faces like Sokol and DrRansom. And congratulations to Darth_Ryan who won it all.

Damja - you did a great job as usual putting this together. Thanks for all your hard work. When's the next one? ;)

It was an excellent tournament, and your KoW Weston army gave me my favorite and most suspensful game I have played.

I have already put that custom lava into my maps to see how it looks. So far, it is flaming ruins till I make some rules about adjacency for it.

That was an excellent tournament damja, thanks for running it.

Thanks guys, but honestly the organizational part is easy. I'm just glad you all came out and had a good time.

If everyone could do me a favor though, I would appreciate it. A couple of deathreavers walked away after the tournament. If you could just check your stuff to see if it happened to end up with yours ZBX and I would appreciate it.

As far as the next tournament I will likely put one together around the winter holidays. It will be thematic, but will likely be closer to the "normal" army size than this one.

Thanks again and don't forget to thank :truth: and :gb:

I guess I will post about the Jotun vs Drake event in my last game with waycoolsuperdude... it was such a dominant part of that game I hardly remember the rest of that game, so I will just report this part of the game.

After killing most of his army... with zelrig vs commons :)... I was hopeing for a clean sweep, I almost had all his figs dead and still had all mine alive. Then his drake grappled up on top of the lava hill at the end of a round.

The next round he placed 3 turn markers on drake (I expected it to be 1 2 3), I won initiative, and where I got cocky and said "This is going to tick you off"... and moved my jotun adjacent to his drake, now eye to eye with jotun on the tall hill. I rolled for throw... got a 14, threw drake in the molten lava... he rolls and survives... Drake grapples back to the same space he was, and does 3 wounds on jotun. I roll for throw again, and again throw Drake in the lava... he rolls and survives again.... and again grapples back to the hill, doing another 4 points of damage to jotun, who is now dead at 7 wounds...... of corse I had my third order marker on Jotun. Drake then kills off a few 10th regiment in the next rounds... and the game ends on time.

I still won, but so close to a sweep :).

Also, I found my einar D20... so my collection is safe and still complete :)

Yeah.. total success. Thanks to all for a great event. My kid had fun rolling the dice for everyone. Special thanks to Damja for the bulk of the organization.

Can't wait to do it again!

..the bad news is that I have to take a test that day and so I might be running late and unable to participate in the tourney itself. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up. I will let you know more when I find out what time the test is.

LIES all LIES! :) Thanks for giving me my first tournament Defeat anyway.. stupid Krav Maga.. I mean, Well done mate!

Hey everyone, well it was another successful tournament. I had a fantastic time and it was great meeting all the new players and catching up with everyone else. Thanks again Damja for putting this together. Can't wait until the Winter event.

And Doc, don't be mad at the Krav just because they totally kicked your AE's butts. Too bad last turn neither of us could reach the other. All in all an awesome tourney!

Damja, thanks again for all of your efforts to organize this tournament (and all the others!) My last game with Draconious was the best. Even though I still lost, the smackdown on Jotun, Thorian style rocked! Drac and I have faced off in almost every tournament and I think we are about even in wins and losses. Always a good battle. I'm just glad there were witnesses. Many thanks to ZBeeblebrox for letting me borrow the Amazing D20 of Hot Lava Death Avoidance.
It was also really great to see all the familiar faces and especially the new folks. I hope to lose to every one of you some day!

I don't mind admitting to whomever was wondering, it was my fault. As soon as I got home and noticed the rats had hitched a ride with my brits. I PM'd the involved parties that same hour to fix it.

I just want to add, I am really impessed with the kindness and good sportsmanship of everyone that I encountered at the tourney. You are all a really gracious group of people as far as rules and common courtesy are concerned. I learned allot form playing with you all and hope to maintain that high standard of gentlemen-ly playing. :)

Cheers.

Express Your Interest in the "Michigan Scapers" thread
HERE (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?p=913041#post913041)

"(DARN HACKERS...)

Okay, so here's what I said before:

So far, there doesn't seem to be a tournament going in Michigan for NHSD. I just got through Grant Clark's section in HS Codex 11 about "Missions: The New Tournament," and got inspired.

How about a Missions-based Tournament in Lapeer?

Here's what I can do to set this up:

I can provide a venue: my barn! (Not an animal barn...a PARTY BARN!)
I can provide lunch for a modest group of players.
I can provide nearly all terrain for maps (except lava ones...need those brought)
I can promise very cool Missions that will test your strategic abilities...beyond army selection!
I can provide my phone number so you can call and make sure you wouldn't be coming to some creep's house.
Did I mention lunch?

Damja's giving me tips on organizing/hosting, so you'll be spared no expense...

But I gotta know what the interest level is, so I know whether to go forward with this.

And would this be technically for October 17 (Sat) or 18 (Sun)???

Lapeer, by the way, is halfway (east/west) between Flint and Imlay City, 1 hour north of Detroit, 45 min. northwest of Sterling Heights, and about 2 hours east of Grand Rapids."

Would making it a free event
make a difference at all?

Just looking to provide a service,
and myself a creative outlet.
I understand if this isn't a
good time to do one.

Perhaps later, as far as next spring,
would bode better... idea's open.

I've seen this thread multiple times, but was too lazy to post in it I suppose. :p

Wow, now that I think about it, I've never played a game of Heroscape above 600 points. At 800 points with a 24 space starting zone limit, this ought to be a blast playing all the crazy armies people will think up.

Count me in, for better or worse! Reserve a spot for my uncle, for he might come.

Looked at my calendar and am all clear. I just have to hitch a ride out there, either from my reluctant mom or someone else. If I do come, I will provide the lava maps. I will let you know about my chance of coming soon.
