Okay, I did not want to post anything official until I got a location secured. I know there are probably FLGS in Bloomington and Springfield who might be accomodating, but I found nothing in Champaign-Urbana. If I am running it, it needs to be very close to me.
Mahomet Area Community Center in Mahomet IL is a great place for this event. It has plenty of free parking, Free Wi-Fi access, tables and chairs for approximately 30-40 people. Mahomet is about 10 min West of Champaign-Urbana and Route 47 and Route 150 literally pass right through the town. It has a decent number of good places to eat, including two pizza places, a McDonalds, An Arby's, Subway, and a fantastic Mexican Restauraunt called Los Zarappas. It also has two very delicious Chinese Restaurants.
The Tourney will be 12-4:30 on October 19th. You could come into town early to eat. Food is welcome in the Community Center as well, but nothing will be served. Bring your own drinks (no alcohol :) permitted -- hey, it's a Sunday!). I will need a small entrance fee to cover the overhead on the building. $4 per person should allow me extra funds to buy some additional prizes. I will be offering at least one of my own Skahens.
I've gotten some feedback on the specifics of the tourney. I'm liking 540 points. I would like to allow Marvel Figs, but I've gotten mixed reactions. Let me know what you think! I would like to add something to make it different and encourage a greater variety of units -- perhaps something like every army needs to include something off Spider Poison's Ratings list with a D+ or lower. Please give some input here or PM me. I plan on using some of the maps from GenCon '08, but I will need a volunteer or two to come a little ealry to set up boards. I can only set up 3-4 of my own. We'll need 6-8 total. Thanks, I hope this works for everyone. Let me know here if you have any change in plans or if you have gotten more players. Please avoid mixing Marvel with core Heroscape. The official tourney rules should be released soon and the mixing of the two will not be part of the initial sanctioned line-up.

Everything sounds great so far! Keep up the good work.
As far as the Marvel controversy (and I am a little biased), my vote stands with allowing it until the games are officially separated. In all reality, I doubt that many people will have success with Marvel anyway or even choose an army including Marvel characters. Just because it forces a different style of play from the "norm" it not a reason to exclude them. Either way I am happy to be able to play in a tourny.

Marvel kills the synergy of classic, with the one exception of Captain America. Besides it's National Heroscape Day not National Marvel/Heroscape Day

Dilemma solved! Marvel is out.
And by the way, precise directions will eventually be PM'd to all of those who have already agreed to attend. Just give me some more time.

Although I like Marvel (and wish there were more of them), it probably would be best to leave them out of NHSD tournies. Regarding maps - I have 3 MS I can build from if you need.
I like the idea of a quirk in every army. Where do I find that grading list again?
Other quirks:
each army must include :
one winged non-dragon/
one dragon/
one figure from each general (- Mr. WooHoo)/
one figure from each grade level (ABCD&F)/
all large or huge figures/

Your ideas are cool. I was thinking of having at least one unit in each army from the D+, D, D-, or F list just to force experienced players to get more creative and to encourage units typically not seen in tournaments. If experienced players are forced to build their army around Dund or Acolahr, I think it would make the tournament interesting. I don't want to exclude players without a large variety of figures though, so I'm not sure its the best idea. I'm looking for input.
P.S. I really like the one from each Grade level idea, but that's a bit restrictive. It sure would make the army choices unusual, though.

I agree with you 100% on the way Marvel fits into the game. I know there are a few quirks, but in my experience, all Marvel armies do not stand up to all HS armies, and mixing the two just makes the game more interesting; however, if GB says "NO" because the tournament rules will not include Marvel, then I'm cutting it out. I want the tournament to be as official as possible.

I didn't mean to build an army with just 5 heroes/squads, but rather have your 540 point army but each grade level must be represented. Minus the "plus and minus" grades - just straight A,B,C,D & F.

Or combine the D & F grade into one since there are so few.

Thanks for at least listening to my ideas. I understand the desire to stay within the official bounds.
I do like the "D" or "F" class idea. It will certainly shake things up and help us noobs to not get destroyed so easily. I say go for it!

I understood you correctly. I like the idea, but I think it would really turn some players off to have to pick from each of the 5 categories. It would make some synergies really hard to develop. Most of us have a core of units we like to build from, and I think it would keep quite a few units from even being considered. Commons/undead for instance would really be hard to build on. Knights would be very hard to use and Templar simply impossible. Soulborg armies would be challenging to build. All Marro armies would be out! Even the elves would not be an option. I wanted to come up with something that would get more variety in tournament armies, and I'm not sure that would achieve it. Right now, no guidelines are official. I'm just wanting some input, so keep it coming!
That being said, I would go to your tournament if that were the guidelines, because it would be challenging; but as an organizer, I am worried about turning too many people off. My numbers right now are pretty good and I want to keep it that way.
Thanks, Briaka! I really look forward to seeing you play at the tourney!

Here are a couple other ideas if you want to mix things up. One would be to restrict armies to a single general (or at least offer a small bonus to those who do.) Another is to limit the number of multiples of a common squad (to say, 3).
Whatever you decide, you can count on my presence there (barring some catastrophe, etc.). I'm looking forward to it!

I'm in Peoria and was thinking about running an event out here. If your event was in the Bloomington-Normal area, I'd definitely show up. Depending on how things shake up out here, there is a decent chance I'll be there anyway, so, please, keep me in the loop. If anyone is closer to Peoria and interested, drop me a PM.
If I were going to run a tournament with restrictions, these are the first two that I would consider:
1) The B List Tournament (no figures ranked in the A-, A, or A+ range allowed)
2) Faction Pure (your army must be from a single general and prizes would be awarded for the top player of each general)
Also, I agree with the decision to disallow Marvel.

One more thought: You should look through the member list and PM anyone that has a location listed in Central Illinois just to generate interest. Necroblade did that for the Florida Frenzy last year, and I think it helped a lot in getting the word out.

Just a suggestion, one of the rules we have used before is that a certain % of your army must be from the newest wave. Like 50% of your point value must come from wave 8, this is just how we try and break out of the same old armies that we are used to and like playing.

Okay, I sent out a PM to everyone in Illinois that wasn't listed as a Chicago resident. I mentioned the possibility of an event in Peoria on October 18 and included this link to this thread for the event on October 19. I can't make Sunday, so it looks like I'll either have to put something together or go without participating this year.

Yes, Vydar, I got your PM and appreciate very much you referencing this thread. Thank you. It might be much more convenient for others such as JetJake to attend in Peoria rather than near Champaign-Urbana. Also Saturday might be more convenient than Sunday. Just keep some info on this thread if you are changing plans. Thanks again.

My goal is just to have a casual play get together at a local gaming store. I don't have time to organize a full tournament right now. I posted another thread just as a place holder for now. I'm about to leave town on business, but when I get back I will update it further.

I hate to do this to you but I think I'll have to agree with jetjake. After further consideration, October 19th would not be a good day. Kind of a 'bad luck/superstitious' day for my dad. Maybe a different day/month in the future. I would be interested if I have the time off to get away.

Hmm...I hope I'm not killing the tournament that playa1 is organizing. I'd love to drive out and play in the tournament, but I just can't do Sunday.
For those interested in prizes, I think the Sunday tournament will have a Skahen prize sent to it. I don't think Peoria Casual Play will be supported at all.

The Rumors of the Tournament's demise have been greatly exaggerated. While we lost a number of attendees to the Peoria gig, we will still be holding a tournament of at least 10. I will do another PM round to provide further confirmation and will update accordingly. I will be provide names at this time.
