Anyone in the Northeast area want to chip in and rent an RV and drive to GenCon next year? We can get a whole bunch of people in it and play games the entire trip coming and going.

I'm in the Northeast area (MA), but my dad will probably just fly us out there again in 09'. But it will be cool to meet more from MA, like I just meet you Onacara! (+rep :) )

Man! That's such a great idea that I'd be tempted to drive up there just so I can ride in a gaming RV with you guys to GC!!!

You guys can stay in that RV campground 7 miles South of Downtown. They've got internet and everything. You guys can take a car or bus to the convention too.

Its a big Indy campsite that caters to the Racing fans there and their RVs

You guys do that and Ill thrown in some $$$ to camp at your guys site!

Any chance your route takes you through Texas?

We would have to make it the BEST 9 DAYS OF GAMING but it would be worth it.

Yes, jump on the giant tour bus to GenCon as it makes it's way around the entire country picking up Heroscapers along the way! A 30 day journey to gather gamers and have fun, screw work and school and bills that you need to pay. Go to GenCon instead! :p

Obviously, a lot can change between now and then, but I'd probably be interested in this. It really depends on what's going on nearer to that time.

Lets just make it the best 60 days of gaming and swing by Costa Rica and pick me up :)

Very Cool Idea, Now that is sweet.

The campground sounds great, I was 7 miles away by the airport, so I figure we lost 40 minutes of gaming a day, not so bad for a 1/2 price hotel, of course add parking and gas and it is still a better deal for me, but next year I hope to be able to get in a hotel next to the convention center - being a morning person it would be cool to go to the open game room at 6 AM.

The RV would be just for the trip there and back..I couldn't live in it with a bunch of guys for too long either. When you think about what airfare costs it comes out to be alot cheaper and a hell of alot more fun to be able to drive and play at the same time.

Have you considered trains? I don't know how much room you'd have, but you don't have to drive.

Can you drink in an RV? Aren't there laws against something like that?

Would the rental come with a driver? Just thinking that not too many of us have experience driving something that big.

As long as the driver isnt drinking or you arent throwing empties out the window there isnt a problem.

Perhaps if we have enough guys we can hire a driver too. :p

You could rent a rock tour bus with driver..... We could paint HeroScape on the side and replace the hood ornament with a Taelord figure.... Toss out Nakita packs at the larger towns as we drive through, do shots of inverted 1 hexers filled with tequilla, build a megamap on the roof, and blast "The Immigrant Song" over the outside loudspeakers!

No laws against that .... there even has been a federal judgement that states it is acceptable ( obviously not for the driver, but the rest in the vehicle are not penalized ).

Do you have any information on that campground? I called the Chamber of Commerence and they were of no help. I have been thinking about motorhomeing to Indy as well ... sure wish we could park out side the event center.

That would be way cool if you could park outside the convention center, or in the stadium parking lot.
None of the parking garages I saw was tall enough to get a bigol RV in them.

Great idea I tell you.

Hendal thinking if he could get picked up in Ohio?

Yea, I’ve though about traveling to Indy this way for some time. I know we can get a full size map set up on the dinette table and one on the large flat dash ( it’s like an 8” table). We could also get a “ Fire Isle “ size map put on the pullout table between the TT chairs in the living room. If we were to get creative we could also put a full size map between the twin beds in the back. Not too bad we could hold an 8-man tourney on the way to Indy.

And for the price of approx one airline ticket you could haul nine or so heroscapers to Indy. Of course it would take another three hundred some dollar plane ticket to fill the tanks to get back home as you would also be running the generator ( for the A/C, frig, ect).

If we could get secured parking for RVs next to or near the event center I think that is the way to go. Last year I did contact the convenstion center and the chamber .... both with no luck. If someone does get some into on this let me know. I'm interested, we could end up with all our wagons circled and have a little HS annex in the parking lot.

Don't they tail-gate out side of the Colts game?

Dennys

The convention center itself has to have an underground dock area large enough for box trucks to get in and out, usually with associated parking. All you'd need is for someone inside to snag a parking permit.

Maybe we could use the cargo space to "store the maps".:ponder:

I can see it now, 10 buses coming from all over the United states to converge on GC - you may start something here, I love the Idea coming from Canton over to GC - I know swninja would be in and a few of my boys, with Cleveland driving down, we could pass through columbus. It is only a 5 hour drive, but that is 4 or 5 games easily, OK 5 1/2 in the RV.

The great thing I see - if you could actually get 4 boards set up you could hold mini tourneys of the same kind at GC ( capture raelin, heat of the battle, etc. ) and really get some serious practice in right before.

Very sound idea, down to parking it seems

These might help some:

Indianapolis area camping (http://www.indymotorspeedway.com/500camp.htm#indy)

Scroll down to Central Indiana (http://www.rv-clubs.us/indiana_rv_campgrounds.html#Central)

Also, some Wal-Marts allow RVs to park overnight in their parking lot.

Unfortunately, none of these RV camps are near the convention center, so you would have to have alternate transportation back and forth to the convention center. Or I guess, you could drive in and park on a surface lot each day. There are some south of the convention center (don't know the cost for an RV) and there is always the zoo parking lot (1/4 to 1/2 mile walk) that would be $5/day.

Thanks Retlaw. I know in my case I would only be interested if I could park nearby the convention center.... that would be great!

Walmart is very friendly to campers that just park overnight... However I'm not so sure about parking there evey night.

You can park at Wall Mart as long as you want, they know you will come in and buy stuff, so why not,

Any chance you are going to pull this off this year?

Actually, it is now the best 5 days in gaming. If you got the newsletter, you will see that they are having an open Wednesday gaming for the early birds. More gaming to go around for everyone!

Its cheaper to drive and pay $100 for parking than taking a train, at least from detroit it is...

I had a 32 foot motor home, but we just got rid of it a while back, so cannot offer to drive :)
Regardless to how big it was, 4 or 5 people was kind of cramped in it...

if it is just for the ride, rent a bus ;) or buy a $500 bus from surplus.

What do the camp grounds charge in the area? I'll sleep in my pickup, with cap... if its cheaper then parking and a hotel.

Really trying to go this year, but just cannot get a job to pay for it, cannot even afford the event fees... had my hopes up with the last two... but blah...

EDIT And I see someone resurrected an old thread ;)

Since I am bringing Kathy along with me, I doubt she'd want to stay anywhere but a nice hotel in walking distance from the Con and the Ram. ;)
