View Full Version : Units Going to GenCon

August 5th, 2008, 12:08 PM
I'm certainly not going to reveal my GenCon armies (I'm in some Damnation Alley events, the main tournament, and Heat of the Battle), and I don't want you too either. But, if you are going to Gencon and are not (as I am not) taking your whole collection to Indianapolis, which units are you trucking up there (not necessarily that you will play everyone you cart around)?

I'm taking:

Mimring
Zelrig
Shades of Bleakwood
10th Regiment of Foot
Deathreavers
Eldgrim
Marro Stingers
Isamu
Sentinels of Jandar

...and that's about it. Lots of possibilities, there, of course; but only nine different units.

So, I challenge you...who are you packing?

Last night I tried to pack ther whole collection and realized that I was being ridiculous. (It all fits but the bag is stuffed and there is no room for goodies to come back.

I will probably bring enough to make 2 armies for each event I am in but do not see it being anymore than fits in the Spider Box.

I got it at Walmart...it was $45. It looks like the one I had the picture for, but the one I have is bigger and the Plano boxes go in the other way. It holds 6 full size Plano's in it. It is great for Gamedays and tournaments.

Cover Fire: All figures that you haven't played in over a year because they simply don't compete well (i.e. Roman Archers) gain a +6 attack and +7 defense when you jangle your Agent Skahen figure in your opponent's face and scream "Cover Fire, Bee-Otch!"

The skinny is that I have a travel case that is always stocked with the extra uniques I have. So I am just adding the additional uniques and commons I want to have at my disposal. Also, I plan on doing after hours gaming and pick up games too. I don't want to be married to a restricted set of armies I can play. Trust me, the armies I am considering playing have been posted in various other threads.

I am really struggling with that this year(still!). Last year I was very confident with the army I was brining to the main event. This year, I got nothing! I keep finding the same scissors and rock that you keep finding. :(

I'm sure you realize that there is no perfect army. We all drive ourselves crazy thinking that we'll come up with one (which is also ironically what makes the game so damned enjoyable). There's competitive ones and not-so competitive ones, but no perfect one.

What I've decided is that I just have to go with the units I enjoy playing. That way, win or lose, I'll have fun!

Oh, and this means I'll be bringing all of my shades, my old-school elves, most of my dragons, orcs, all of ROTV, snipers, and yes -- even Dund (no joking). I'll probably bring everything, but I'll be double checking for these.

I am bringing my whole collection a well I think. I can't seem to come up with an army I like for the Championship event. Like the Rev., I keep going in circles around a variety of armies and I can't seem to settle. The one I have enjoyed the most lately is the kind of army likely to receive eye rolls and groans (a very obvious, annoying, all A+ type figures that people don't like to play against.) Admittedly it is not the perfect army, not a big win army, but a very difficult army to beet.

I still don't have much of a clue. I've helped other people come up with their armies, but I've only got my Jumpstart and Battle over Cursed Lands armies 100% finalized. I'm down to about 2-3 choices in all of the other events though.

Don't worry so much about that in the championship. I doubt you'll see much eye rolling. A+ units will see much play in the championship. At the ticket price for this event, you will mostly have very competitive minded folks who understand the A+ units and how to beat them as well.

With all the units I am taking to gencon, I got my fist real chance to effectively use my travel case for figure and cards, here are some pics.

My Travelscape case:

Easy carrying.

yes, it is a make up or beauty case :-|

http://www.heroscapers.com/community/gallery/files/4/8/gencon_case_3.jpg
Trays pull out to large lower area. Trays can hold 25-30 small or medium figures each or more. The top trays have compartment bottoms from a standard size hobby box sitting in them

http://www.heroscapers.com/community/gallery/files/4/8/ample_storage_below.jpg
The lower area holds many items, including large and huge figures. The trays are deep enough to hold small hobby boxes for markers and dice. MBS fits nicely in the tray.

http://www.heroscapers.com/community/gallery/files/4/8/cards_in_card_box.jpg
This resurfaced cell phone box, holds all the cards.

http://www.heroscapers.com/community/gallery/files/4/8/small_hobby_box_fits_in_side.jpg
Another standard size hobby box for more small and medium figures.

Meticulous compact storage; just my speed. I like this case so much I am thinking of getting another.
